St. Athanasius Parish, Reading, MA January 14, 2018
2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time A lot of organizations require volunteer time: schools, PTAs, Scout programs, leadership training programs. Others depend on their membership to volunteer: parish, clubs, community organizations, food kitchens, theater groups, choirs, etc. Someone has to get involved if these cultural, educational and religious groups are to provide the services and programs that benefit so many people. Helping hands make for handy help. Serving others is an expression of faith and a practical expression of love. Many people say that they get so much from volunteering and helping others. It’s easy to make a difference in someone’s life and offer a bit of reassurance, help and hope. It’s a gift that comes back to us a hundred times over. Service is not limited to helping the community, but also extends to our own family and neighbors. Washing dishes or cleaning up the yard, or giving someone a ride, or sharing a meal contribute to making life easier and less of a burden. These unexpected and random acts of kindness connect us to each other and give everyone a sense of belonging. That’s a gift that lasts all year long.
