question will be tackle in a dueway. We may change our laws, but how do we change our be-havior and beliefs to that phi-losophy of sustainable? We allknow we shouldn’t be drivingthrough the red light, and yet,we still see it. We need to re-mind the community day afterday, not only explaining whatand how we are doing things, but the why of it. This requiresa lot of information and com-munication, and from my per-spective, education. Not onlytowards the new generation, which appears to already be in-stilled with an awareness”

lic is encouraged to attend thisfree lecture.

“Consciousness is rising onAruba regarding sustainabledevelopment, but I think weare not there yet,” maintainsDr. Peterson. “The messagedoesn’t always trickle down aswell as we would like; let’s behonest, the world has been dis-cussing “Sustainable Develop-ment” for over sixty years andyet there are decisions made ona global level that bewildermany of us. It is a continuouseffort; we have come a longway, but we are not there yet.Sustainable Development doesnot have an end station; therewill be no moment in timewhen a country, an island, a so-ciety can say “ok, now we aresustainable.” It is a continuouseffort, environments are con-tinually changing, and climatechange will not stop. All these

that implies regarding assets, infrastructure, education-laws,there are so many assets in-volved in sustainable develop-ment from a broad perspective. The question is not “if” thequestion is “when,” in regardsto policy actions that should betaken and when they should betaken to realize our objectives. This is, indeed a ‘big’ effort, but in these times we live in, itis no longer sufficient to justfine tune the left or right, anddo it in a fragmented way. ”

The third day, Wednesday,January 18, the University ofAruba will host a public ses-sion with Dr. Daniel Schrag,Sturgis Hooper Professor ofGeology at Harvard and Direc-tor of Harvard University Cen-ter for the Environment. Hispresentation “Confronting theClimate-Energy Challenge”begins at 7:00 PM and the pub-

take in creating that sustain-able future in an integratedfashion. Environmental lawsare expected to be a key prior-ity. “It isn’t only about thelegal aspect, but the executionof coherent programs.”

Dr. Peterson acknowledgedanother aspect of such a con-ference is bringing an aware-ness of Aruba’s policies andactions to important partiesthat could prove vital towardsthe advancement of the ulti-mate goal of fossil fuel inde-pendence, being a leader in theregion, possibly the world, inthe development of renewableenergy technology, and the re-alization of this last aspect as anew and strong pillar of the is-land’s economy. “What subse-quent steps could be made andshould be made to realize thatvision we have of Aruba as a‘Green Gateway,” and what

“What is also important arequestions of community andsocietal impact of climatechange…how changes will im-pact the Aruban communityalong with changes in energypolicies …in order to movethat coherent policy –and I em-phasis coherent- looking at thebalance and integration of eco-nomic, social and environmen-tal policies in an integratedfashion in mind of mid-termand long-term perspective.”

The effects of climate arealso radically felt in theworld’s oceans and seas, andas an island community sur-rounded by water, this is ofparticular concern; this and theother questions mentioned willbe of particular focus over thefirst two days of the confe -rence. “Aruba has made somesteps in some areas, but thereis obviously more we need to

His 28-year sentence is due toend on June 20, 2038, takinginto account the time he hasspent in jail.

The trial attracted wide-spread attention in the UnitedStates, as Van der Sloot is aprime suspect in the unsolveddisappearance of US collegestudent Natalee Holloway onAruba in 2005.

The Dutchman was twicearrested in the Holloway caseand spent three months in jailbut never was formallycharged. Holloway's body hasnot been found. The Lima trialprovided no insights into theHolloway case.

The Peru trial was post-poned last week after Van derSloot admitted guilt but askedfor time to decide how to plead.

Van der Sloot's lawyer how-ever at one point mentioned the"extreme psychological shock"suffered by his client due to nu-merous articles slandering theDutchman on the fifth anniver-sary of Holloway's disappear-ance, in May 2010.

The victim's father, RicardoFlores, complained after theverdict that Van der Sloot wasenjoying favorable conditionsin a Lima prison, where he hasbeen living apart from the gen-eral population and foreignerswith money can buy superiortreatment.

"A jail isn't a 5-star hotel,"Ricardo Flores told reporters."Let's hope the authorities takethat into account and not just inour case."

"Since the first day we'vebeen complaining about the ex-cessive privileges" that Van derSloot allegedly enjoyed in jail,he said.

Flores said he would pre -sent evidence of this at a newsconference on Monday. Un-confirmed news reports deniedby penal authorities say Vander Sloot has also had a televi-sion and video gaming console.

(AFP) - Apple said Friday itwas suspending sales of thenew iPhone at its China storesafter fans desperate to get theirhands on it fought with secu-rity and threw eggs at an offi-cial outlet.

Police detained at least twopeople outside the Beijingshop on Friday when angrycrowds who had queued forhours in freezing temperaturesfor the Chinese launch of theiPhone 4S were left furiousafter being refused entry.

An AFP reporter outsidethe store in the upmarket San-litun district saw frustratedshoppers attack a securityguard after police with mega-

phones shouted at the 1,000-strong crowd to go home andsaid the gadget would not goon sale.

Apple said its other main-land China stores -- another inBeijing and three in Shanghai-- had sold out of the new de-vice within hours.

"The demand for iPhone 4Shas been incredible," saidspokeswoman Carolyn Wu.

"Unfortunately we were un-able to open our store at Sanli-tun due to the large crowd, andto ensure the safety of our cus-tomers and employees,iPhones will not be available inour retail stores in Beijing andShanghai for the time being."

Apple said customers couldstill order iPhones online andat other authorised retailers inChina.

A worker at a small, down-town China Unicom shop said80 iPhone 4S models had soldout in four hours.

Some of the people gath-ered outside the Sanlitun store

from the early hours on Fridaytold AFP they had been prom-ised 100 yuan (almost $16)each by touts to stand in lineand wait for the doors to open.

Reselling is a major indus-try in China, where the newiPhone has been on sale formonths at a premium on theblack market, after beingsmuggled in from neighbour-ing countries and from HongKong.

The new model, which fea-tures a high-definition videocamera and a quick-witted ar-tificial intelligence "personalassistant" named Siri, had itsglobal launch in October.

Die-hard fans in China, which has the world's largestonline population with morethan 500 million users, havebeen known to line up for daysto get their hands on the latestApple products.

But Apple's popularity hasalso brought problems, withwidespread counterfeiting andillegal smuggling of its prod-ucts.

THE HAGUE (AFP) - ADutch marine rescue centrefor baby seals said Fridaymore than 100 of the seamammal pups had washed upalong the country's northerncoastline after recent storms.

The large numbers -- whichthe centre blamed in part onrising environmental pressuresthat leave the young sealsweak -- had stretched the cen-tre's capacity, forcing it to putup an extra tent and pool.

"In the last 10 days, as a re-sult of storms, we have res-cued more than 100 sealswashed up, with the total num-ber at the centre shooting up to365," said Zeehondencreche(Seal Nursery) director Leniet'Hart.

Usually the centre rescuesabout 150 seals a year, shesaid.

Although stormy weatherin the Wadden Sea -- an inter-tidal zone spanning the coastand the Wadden Islands in thenorthern Netherlands -- playeda role, t'Hart said growingnumbers washing up, espe-cially pups, showed the Dutchseal population is under in-creasing pressure.

"In the last two or threeyears, we have seen more andmore seals wash up too weakto look after themselves," shetold AFP.

"This is a result of commer-cial overfishing as well asseals getting sick from eating

fish with toxins as a result ofpollution."

Especially vulnerable wereseal pups under one year old.

"These pups eat small fish, but even in protected areas, they cannot find food becausethere are no more small fishleft," she said.

When a pup arrives at thecreche, it is washed, given flu-ids "as many are severely de-hydrated", and fed a"porridge" of ground herringand water.

They are then placed in aspecial pen to recuperate.

Because of the large num-bers, an extra tent with poolsand pens had to be set up, andthe nursery asked other marineinstitutions for help, t'Hartsaid.

She said most seals recoversufficiently to be releasedback into the Wadden Sea orthe North Sea within threemonths.

Partly declared a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site in 2009,the Wadden Sea consists ofsalt marshes, tidal and perma-nently flooded flats, sandbanks and channels.

It is shared between theNetherlands and Germany andis a popular destination forwater sports and nature lovers, with whom seal sight-seeingtrips remain popular, accord-ing to the Wadden Sea WorldHeritage website.

Richard O'Dwyer, 23, al-legedly earned thousands ofpounds (dollars) through ad-vertising on the TVShack web-site before it was closed downby US authorities.

He faces jail if found guiltyof the charges, which werebrought after a crackdown bythe US Immigration and Cus-toms Enforcement agency.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - TheWorld Boxing Association onFriday ordered a rematchwithin 180 days of the contro-versial light-welterweightworld title fight betweenBritain's Amir Khan andAmerican Lamont Peterson.

The move comes in thewake of a much debated split-decision victory by Petersonover the Englishman lastmonth in Washington, Peter-son's hometown, and after aformal appeal by Golden BoyPromotions to the WBA onbehalf of Khan.

"I'm pleased that justicehas been done and the WBAhas ordered an immediate re-match," Khan said. "All weask as sportsmen is for a fairand level playing field whenwe compete.

"Lamont Peterson provedin our fight that he is a greatcompetitor. I hope a secondbout will be just as exciting. Iwant to prove without doubtthat I'm the best in the 140-pound division by taking careof business in the rematch."

Referee Joe Cooper de-ducted points from Khan inthe seventh and 12th roundsfor pushing, a rare call, anddid not credit Khan with whatshould have been a knock-down in the first round, ac-cording to the WBA.

The sanctioning body saidCooper's moves impacted theoutcome of the fight. HadKhan not been docked thepoint in the final round, judgesscores would have made thefight a draw and Khan wouldhave kept his titles.

Instead, Peterson took theWBA and International Box-ing Federation crowns, im-proving to 30-1-1 with 15knockouts. Khan fell to 26-2with 18 knockouts.

Peterson, mentioned as apossible next foe for MannyPacquiao, could vacate theWBA crown rather than fighta rematch with Khan and evenkeep a share of the title, de-pending on what happens innext week's IBF hearing on

the fight."Unfortunately, we are in

this process of dealing withthese unfounded protests,"said Barry Hunter, Peterson'smanager and trainer.

"Khan blames everyoneand everything but his per-formance and lack of ability tomake adjustments in the ringfor his loss.

"It would be an understate-ment to characterize Lamontas being disappointed in theunprofessional manner inwhich Khan is attempting todiscredit his performance inthe ring and victory."

"I'm thrilled about the deci-sion and hope that we can startnegotiations and get the re-match done," Golden Boychief executive RichardSchaefer said.

"Both Amir and Lamontare terrific young men andathletes who fought theirhearts out in Washington lastDecember. I am sure that fightfans from around the worldapplaud the WBA's decision."

The WBA also pointed toan unauthorized person, IBF-credentialed Mustafa Ameen, handling the official scoringslips used by judges during thebout then posing with Peter-son for pictures after the fight.

Hunter, who turned down arematch offer worth $1 mil-lion immediately after theKhan fight, said Ameen is notconnected to Peterson or theircamp.
