WASHINGTON (AFP) -Glo bal uncertainty on how todeal with the threats of nu-clear weapons and climatechange have forced the"Doomsday clock" oneminute closer to midnight, leading international scien-tists said yesterday.

"It is now five minutes tomidnight," said Allison Mac-farlan, chair of the Bulletin ofAtomic Scientists, which cre-ated the Doomsday clock in1947 as a barometer of howclose the world is to an apoc-alyptic end.

The last decision by thegroup, which includes a hostof Nobel Prize winning scien-tists, moved the clock aminute further away frommidnight in 2010 on hopes ofglobal nuclear cooperationand the election of PresidentBarack Obama.

However, yesterday's de-cision pushes the clock backto the time where it was in2007.

Sunday afternoon just before sunset, Olga and Igor, far from their home in Moscow,Russia, had their long awaited romantic destination wedding. It was a dream cometrue, when after listening to the personalized, meaningful words of Officiant DianeKeijzer, they sealed their union with a kiss as the sun was setting on Manchebo BeachResort and Spa's beautiful beach.

The ceremony was not only advice for their marriage, but emphasized lots of loveand romance combined with sayings in between of their favorite author, WilliamShakespeare.

Photographer, Paul Van Driel, captured all the special moments. The very happycouple complimented Nyoka, Manchebo's wedding planner, and her assistant Mar-rit, who together, flawlessly, prepared a most perfect wedding day.

I would like to introduce my-self. I am one of the donkeyswhich have found shelter atthe Donkey Sanctuary foun-dation of Aruba. I have beenthere for quite a number ofyears already. For the first sixmonths of my life I roamedaround the island, togetherwith my mom. But at a cer-tain moment I could not findher anymore and I was totallyon my own.

Fortunately the volunteersof the Sanctuary organizationtook me in. I love living at theSanctuary, and I even have agood friend: Riba. We can al-ways be found together, get-ting into mischief. Riba had abroken hind leg, but she hasrecovered thanks to the goodcare of the Donkey Sanctuary. We love playing together. Ac-tually, I am really happy thatI am allowed to live at theSanctuary; otherwise I wouldhave been roaming around onmy own. That is very danger-ous: not only traffic, but alsowild dogs are a menace fordonkeys. And of course onewould be hungry and thirstyall the time.

This beautiful donkey hasbeen provided with a chip, just like all the other don-keys. On the chip is informa-tion about the donkey and itsmedical history. The donkeysat the sanctuary have a lot offriends with whom they canplay all day long. And theylove living there: they arewell-cared for, they are fedand watered and when theyare sick the vet is called. Yes,they are expensive customersfor the sanctuary.

The volunteers are tryingto cover the various costswith all kinds of activitiesand the sale of great donkeymemorabilia in the shop. For-tunately, there are also visi-tors who wish to adopt a

Last week THE MORNINGNEWS put out an urgent callon behalf of Cas Animal forvolunteers to help with a litterof 7 newborn puppies neededfoster homes until ready foradoption. Kiki Arndt, thefounder of the non-profitfoundation, who has turnedher home into a no-kill shel-ter for Aruba’s abandoned, abused and street dogs andcats, did not want to keep thepuppies in the shelter for fearof their exposure to the Parvovirus. As much as one cleansand disinfects, when taking inso many dogs off the streets,it is nearly impossible to keepthis pernicious disease out ofthe facility.

Adult dogs usually toler-ate a bout with the viruspretty well, sometimes noteven showing symptoms, butit is deadly for young pup-pies. THE MORNINGNEWS has been caring for 2of them for the past week, asthey are best taken in as a pairor more to help them social-ize and adapt when they areolder.

Coca crops are a significantincome source for many resi-dents of La Asunta.

PARIS (AFP) - About 1,000South American women planto sue French firm PIP overthe potentially faulty breastimplants the company sup-plied to about 300,000women across the world, their lawyer said yesterday.

Lawyer Arie Alimi saidabout 500 Argentinianwomen and an equal numberfrom Venezuela were plan-ning to be civil plainitffs inthe probe by French policeinto PIP and its founder Jean-Claude Mas.

The probe is expected tolead to a court case to be heldin the southern French city ofMarseille later this year.

About 300,000 women in65 countries are estimated tohave received implants madeby Poly Implant Prothese(PIP), which allegedly usedan illegal industrial-grade gelthat investigators say has ledto abnormally high rates ofruptured implants.

More than 450 lawsuitshave been filed in three coun-tries, and French police haveplaced PIP and its 72-year-oldfounder under investigation.

France, Germany and theCzech Republic have recom-

mended that the devices beremoved as a precaution butBritain has said it will notfollow suit while Australiasays it found no evidence thatthe implants posed a risk.

Thirteen countries in Eu-rope and Latin America haveurged women to have check-ups. In two of them -- Boliviaand Venezuela --- the state isoffering operations to havethe implants removed, buthas not made this a recom-mendation.

Brazil this week will startlisting women who have hadimplants and identify the typeof gel used but the move isnot linked to PIP and was de-cided two years ago, saidJose Horacio Aboudib, thehead of Brazilian Society ofPlastic Surgeons.

"If in 10 years there is aproblem similar to that of thePIP implants, we will knowwhich make and which lot isdefective and we can react,"he said.

In Belgium meanwhile, the health ministry saidwomen there had been fittedwith a total of at least 674 po-tentially faulty breast im-plants made by PIP.

(AFP)--Post-menopausalwomen who take medicationto lower their cholesterol facea higher risk of getting dia-betes than women who donot take the popular drugs, known as statins, said a USstudy on Monday.

The risk was apparenteven after researchers ad-justed for variables such asage, race/ethnicity and bodymass index, said the study inthe Archives of Internal Med-icine, a publication of theJournal of the AmericanMedical Association(JAMA).

The link appeared regard-less of what type of statin, orwhat dosage, the womenwere taking, said the studywhich included 153,000women with an average ageof 63.

The researchers from theMayo Clinic in Minnesotacalled for more study on the

matter but said in the mean-time there was no need to re-vise the guidelines for statinuse in non-diabetic people, pointing out that statins aimto fix the negative heart con-sequences of diabetes.

"Women who are takingstatins should be aware of theneed to check their bloodsugars, along with their liverfunction tests," said SuzanneSteinbaum, director ofwomen and heart disease atLenox Hill Hospital in NewYork.

"Due to the extensive useof statins in the aging femalepopulation, it is critical thatmore studies are done to helpunderstand the associationwith statins and the develop-ment of diabetes," addedSteinbaum, who was not partof the study.

Statins have been dubbed"the aspirin of the 21st cen-tury" for their perceived ben-

efits in cardiovascular healthand relatively few side ef-fects. Worldwide sales totalmore than $20 billion annu-ally.

Popularly known namessuch as Lipitor, Pravachol, and Crestor are among themost widely prescribed drugsin the United States. About42 million Americans sufferfrom high cholesterol.

The drugs help reduce therisk of heart attack and strokeby lowering a person's low-density lipoprotein (LDL),sometimes known as "badcholesterol."

A review published byJAMA in June 2011 showedthat high doses of statinswere linked to higher num-bers of new diabetes cases inpatients, leaving doctors tobalance the benefits and risksaccording to each individualpatient.

The surveyacross 33 states by theFood Safety and StandardsAuthority of India (FSSAI)found that 68.4 percent of1,791 milk samples in thecountry contained adulter-ants such as skim milk pow-der, fat and salt. Despitebeing the world's biggestmilk producer, India is nostranger to adulterated milk."Addition of water not onlyreduces the nutritionalvalue of milk but contami-nated water may also posehealth risks," the study said, adding that the presence ofdetergent "indicates lack ofhygiene and sanitation inthe milk handling."

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Global uncertainty on how to deal withthe threats of nuclear weapons and climate change have forced the"Doomsday clock" one minute closer to midnight, leading interna-tional scientists said Tuesday.

"It is now five minutes to midnight," said Allison Macfarlan, chair of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, which created theDoomsday clock in 1947 as a barometer of how close the world isto an apocalyptic end. The last decision by the group, which in-cludes a host of Nobel Prize winning scientists, in 2010 moved theclock a minute further away from midnight on hopes of global nu-clear cooperation and the election of President Barack Obama.

However, Tuesday's decision pushes the clock back to the time where it was in 2007."It is clear that the change that appeared to be happening at the time is not happening," said

co-chair Lawrence Krauss. "Business as usual reigns the norm among world leaders."Increasing nuclear tensions, refusal to engage in global action on climate change, and a grow-

ing tendency to reject science when it comes to major world concerns were cited as key reasonsfor the latest tick on the clock.

(AFP)-- Microsoft plans tobring its Kinect technology tobear on personal computersfollowing its phenomenalsuccess with the gesture andvoice-recognition sensor inthe Xbox 360 game console.

"I'm thrilled to announcethat Kinect is coming to Win-dows on February 1," Mi-crosoft chief executive SteveBallmer said in his finalkeynote address at the Con-sumer Electronics Show(CES), which opens in LasVegas on Tuesday.

"We're already workingwith over 200 companies onunique Kinect for Windowsapplications," includingAmerican Express, Mattel,Telefonica, Toyota and theUnited Health Group, he tolda packed ballroom at the Ve-netian hotel on Monday.

"The breadth of whatthey're doing is mind-blow-ing," Ballmer said, withoutproviding further details.

Microsoft has shippedmore than 18 million Kinectssince the Xbox peripheralwent on sale just a little over

a year ago, Ballmer said.He said there are currently

66 million Xbox users andmore than 40 million sub-scribers to Xbox Live, whichlinks the game console to theInternet, allowing for real-time game play but also pro-viding access to onlinecontent.

Ballmer said the Xbox hasevolved into "an entertain-ment hub for live TV, on de-mand videos, movies andnews, social (networking),music and of course stillgames."

"Xbox is your all-in-oneentertainment device for theliving room," he said, addingthat a partnership with NewsCorp. would bring Fox tele-vision channels and The WallStreet Journal to the Xboxthis year.

(AFP)--Nokia has de-clared war in the USsmartphone market, witha Microsoft-poweredhandset tailored to takeon Apple iPhones andGoogle-backed Androiddevices.

Microsoft chief exec-utive Steven Ballmerjoined Nokia bossStephen Elop on Mon-day to unveil the newLumia 900 smartphone, which will run on Windowsmobile software and tap intoa growing trove of popularmini-applications.

The two firms did not dis-close the price or release datefor the Lumia 900, but said itwill be offered exclusively onthe latest generation 4G LTEnetwork of US telecom giantAT&T.

"We believe the industryhas shifted from a battle ofdevices to a war of ecosys-tems," Elop said, in a presen-tation laden with martialmetaphors.

"Clearly there are strongcontenders on the field in thiswar of ecosystems," he told aroom packed with press onthe eve of the opening of theannual Consumer ElectronicsShow (CES), a massive gadg-ets fair in Las Vegas.

The Finland-based Nokiain October introduced theLumia line, which Elop de-scribed as the "first real Win-dows phones," which had

established "beachheads" inEurope, India, and HongKong.

The company planned tostart the US invasion on Jan-uary 11 with a Lumia 710model that will be priced at$49 when bought with T-Mo-bile service contracts.

"The work Nokia is doingaround Windows phone andthis third ecosystem is reallygoing to pay off," Ballmersaid, caressing a sleek Lumia900 touchscreen handset.

"When you pick it up andlove and touch and feel yourLumia," he said -- making aplayful "mmmmm" soundthat drew laughs -- "it reallyis quite fantastic."

Lumia 900 has front andrear facing cameras with CarlZeiss photo technology and4.3-inch high-definition dis-plays.

Nokia showed off an arrayof applications made just forLumia 900, including 20videogames made by console

industry colossus Elec-tronic Arts.

Elop said Nokiaplanned to price Lumia900 "aggressively" toestablish a strongbeachhead on the USsmartphone battlefield. He said that Lumiawould then land inChina and Latin Amer-ica to fight for marketshare.

"I am so happy thatcompanies like Samsung,HTC and others are all intro-ducing Windows devices,"Elop said. "We all need to getthat fly wheel spinning; ourprinciple competition is theother ecosystems."

Nokia plans to eventuallyextend Windows across itsfull range of mobile phonesand was working with Mi-crosoft on getting mobilegadgets and computers toshare pictures and other con-tent using the Internet"cloud."

While declining to com-ment specifically on ResearchIn Motion (RIM), Elop saidthat Nokia sees opportunity tocompete in the businesssmartphone market, whichhas long been a strongholdfor RIM's popular BlackBerryhandset.

PARIS (AFP) - Steven Spiel-berg caught the filmmakingbug as a 12-year-old boy, andhalf a century on still goes"crazy" when he doesn't havea story to tell, he admitted tofans packing a masterclass inParis this week.

Greeted with a standingovation, the US director --whose works from "E.T" to"Indiana Jones" are the focusof a retrospective at Paris'Cinematheque film centre --told the room in French, handon his heart: "Je t'aime!"

"I'm a storyteller," the 65-year-old told the filmmakingmasterclass between screen-

ings of his new film"War Horse". "For along time movies wereeverything in my life --and if I don't have astory to tell I go crazy."

"Ask my wife andmy kids what's it's liketo have me without amovie in my immediatefuture to direct!" hequipped. "I'm a terribleperson to live with!"

"I mope, I walkaround the house in aterrible state, I'm miser-able!" Spielberg joked."So my family is thefirst to call my companyand say 'Is there any-

thing in the files he can di-rect? Please help us!'"

Revealed to film buffswith the 1971 car chasethriller "Duel", then to themainstream with "Jaws" in1975, Spielberg has shotmore than 30 feature films aswell as a string of produc-tions for television, fromepisodes of "Columbo" to thehit series "Band of Brothers"in 2001.

"I got starting makingmovies as a kid because Icouldn't think of anythingmore fun to do," Spielbergrecalled. "When I was 13

there was absolutely nothingthat interested me more thanto take a movie camera andtell a three, four minutestory."

"And when I make amovie today, I get that sameenergy, the same excite-ment," he said. "I rememberthe same feeling at 12, 13years old, as the feeling I stillhad as I turned 65. That hasnever gone away."

The director has beensomething of a work horse oflate, directing the 3D block-buster "Adventures of Tintin:Secret of the Unicorn", whichhit screens in late 2011, be-fore launching straight into"War Horse".

When in the grip of a story-- as was the case for "WarHorse" which he based on achildren's book by Britishwriter Michael Morpurgo, and a play adaptation by NickStafford -- Spielberg works

non-stop."From the time we started

working on the script, to thetime I called action for thefirst time in Devon (in south-western England), was sevenmonths," he said, "which asyou know is a very, veryshort time."

"That's an 'E.T.' sort ofrecord, since 'E.T.' took sevenmonths from the time thescript was written to the timewe shot."

"War Horse" tells the storyof Joey, a horse raised in thebucolic English countrysidewho is torn away from hishome -- and stable lad Albert-- and sent to France to thebattlefields of World War I.

Almost deliberately old-fashioned, the movie pitsnoble beast against the hor-rors of war with sweeping, emotional set pieces thatearned it a Golden Globenomination for best dramatic

film, but has divided critics."I cried when I saw it on

stage," Spielberg said of thework. "It's a straight narrativestory. It's completely clear: Ilike stories that are not en-cumbered by excessive sym-bolism or metaphor."

Asked by the event host, the filmmaker Costa Gavras,to offer a tip to the aspiringfilmmakers packing the audi-ence, Spielberg said castingwas key.

"First of all, the best thingyou can do is to cast the rightactor. If not, you have towork ten times more later.

"Once you have casted, listen to the people youcasted: what do they have tobring? Let them do theirwork, read the books," hesaid. "Why cast talented peo-ple if you do not listen tothem? You got to listen morethan you speak."

ROME (AFP) - Former Italycoach Roberto Donadoni hasbeen named the new coach ofSerie A side Parma afterFranco Colomba was uncere-moniously dismissed follow-ing a heavy defeat.

Donadoni, who coachedItaly from 2006-2008, hadbeen out of work for sixmonths since being fired byCagliari during pre-season,straight after a friendly vic-tory.

Colomba paid for Satur-day's 5-0 thrashing at InterMilan, the third time this sea-son his side had been heavilybeaten by a leading con-tender, following 4-1 defeatsagainst AC Milan and Juven-tus.

It was a sixth game in a

row without victory, althoughthey only lost two of thoseand their last success was ahugely impressive 2-0 defeatof high-flying Udinese onNovember 20.

Colomba thus became the11th coach to lose his job inItaly's Serie A already thisseason.

Cagliari and Palermo leadthe way with two coachingchanges and both firedcoaches before the start of theleague season.

Inter replaced Gian PieroGasperini with ClaudioRanieri after just fourmatches in the most high-profile sacking.

Although a former Italycoach, Donadoni has had lit-tle success as a club manager.

He previously coachedLivorno, Genoa and Napoli,as well as Cagliari in the topflight without achieving any-thing remarkable.

He guided Italy to Euro2008 before losing to eventualwinners Spain on penalties inthe quarter-finals, after whichhe was dismissed to allowWorld Cup-winning coachMarcello Lippi to return.
