Dear Janssen School Community,

The month of November and the start of Quarter 2 are already here.

Our students continue to reveal to us their learning and making good

decisions using our district’s community values. Our staff continues to

build positive relationships with our students, so our students know

they are valued in our school, each day. Our teachers continue to re-

flect on students’ learning and adjust what they notice to better deliver

instruction and support for our student to reach their potential. Quar-

ter 2 brings with it additional opportunities for our students to engage

in and own their learning, parent/teacher conferences, our winter con-

cert, and exciting PTO activities.

Our themes this month for “The Janssen Way” are honesty and kind-

ness. Each day during our Morning Paws we will talk about these val-

ues and pose a question on how students can show these values every

day and everywhere. Our focus this month continues with our teachers

providing additional opportunities for our students to problem solve as

reader, writers, mathematicians, and citizens. We want our students to

have a growth mindset and when a struggle surfaces, we support our

students to persevere through the struggle by having them think of and

use strategies to address the struggle.

Finally, this a month we are reminded to give thanks. Understanding

that we live in a busy and complex world, I am so happy when Novem-

ber and Thanksgiving come along. We slow down just a little to recog-

nize who we have in our lives and share out “thank you” for the impact

our loved ones have on us. So…when you get the opportunity to come

together on Thanksgiving Day, I really hope that you: eat together,

laugh together, and give thanks together.

Last month, I shared with you that our behaviors each day drive our

culture. We continue to reflect and act on what we “do” or “do not do”

as a team in order to give students what they need when they need it.

Whenever you wish to share your thinking about our behaviors towards

students’ success at Janssen Elementary, please stop in to see me or

give me a call. We are better when we work together.

Sincerely,

Hercules Nikolaou, Ph.D.

JANSSEN COUNSELOR CORNER

Happy November Everyone!

I can’t believe it is already November! During November, I know I like to reflect and think of all of the

things that I am grateful for. I am extremely grateful that I have such wonderful students that I work

with and that we have such, and giving families here at Janssen. Thank you to you all.

Life Skills Class Updates

-All of our classes completed lessons on bullying and drug and alcohol awareness during the month of

October, with the exception of 4th grade. Our 4th grade classes will be learning about marketing careers

and will be completing a lesson that blends this learning with learning about issues relating to drugs

and alcohol. The students will create an print ad that promotes healthy choices for kids their age.

-Over the next few weeks our focus will change as I deliver lessons on “Protective Behaviors” for every

grade level. Each year, I am required to deliver these lessons as part of our Personal Safety unit. At each

grade level we will be talking in grade level appropriate terms about safe vs. unsafe touch, how to deal

with strangers, and who the trusted people are in each child’s safety network. These lessons can often

prompt serious questions and/or thoughts from our students. If your child comes home with a question

about any of the topics I listed above, please take the time to have those important conversations with

them. And as always, if you have any questions about the lessons or materials that I use, please do not

hesitate to contact me. These lessons will extend into December.

Conferences

Our parent teacher conferences are taking place on November 19th and 29th. This is an important time

to discuss your child’s progress with their teachers. I will be in the building both nights of conferences. If

there is something you would like to meet with me to discuss on either night of conferences, please email

me or give me a call so that I can set up a time.

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving.

status, sexual orientation, sex, (including transgender status, change of sex or gender identity), or physical, mental, emotional, or learning disability ("Protected

EMERGENCY MEDICATIONS

Please be aware that emergency medications

that are provided for use during the school day

will not be accessible before or after school

hours. Parents and students must plan ahead to

have emergency medication available during

school activities such as clubs and sports. If an

emergency arises and a student does not have

their emergency medication available, 911 will

be called.

These students show an exceptional job of the Janssen Way and are role models for the other students in

our school! You can look for their MVP award on the bulletin board displayed outside the office. Way to

go!

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS AND DELAYS

Winter is right around the corner. If weather conditions dictate that there will be no school or a delayed

start, a decision to keep the schools closed is usually made by 6:00 a.m. Parents with students in school

receive a direct call, text and/or email from our auto-call system through Infinite Campus since that is

the fastest way to communicate with thousands of parents at one time.

As a reminder: If you have a new phone number or email address, please update your information in the

Infinite Campus parent portal or contact your school’s secretary to update the portal.

Announcements are also sent to local T.V. and radio stations, please tune to local stations such as these

rather than call the school directly: WAPL-105.7FM, WIXX-101.1FM, WHBY-1150AM, WKFX-104.9FM,

WEMI-91.9 FM, WTAQ-97.5FM/1360AM, WWWX-96.9FM and WGEE-93.5FM; and WBAY-TV2, WFRV-

TV5, WGBA-TV26, and WLUK-FOX11. If other school events, such as concerts or sporting events are

also cancelled because of weather, they are typically communicated through these stations as well.

The District’s website and Facebook page are not our primary way to communicate school closures, so we

ask parents to listen to the auto-call messages or tune in to the radio and T.V. stations listed for the

timeliest updates.

School-Based Counseling for

Students in 5K – 12th Grade

The Kimberly Area School District and United Way’s PATH (Providing Access to

Healing) for Students program are working together to provide students in the

District with the opportunity to receive outpatient mental health services within

their school.

New for this school year: • Opportunity for school-based counseling services expanded

to students in 5-year-old kindergarten through 12th grade.

(Previously only available for grades 7-12.)

• These services are designed to meet the needs of students and families

who would otherwise be unable to access mental health therapy.

Counseling is an excellent way to: • Learn new skills

• Develop self-confidence

• Become more aware of others’ views and

experiences

• Practice new behaviors

• Better understand how to deal with the problems life presents

If you are a parent and think your child may benefit, or if you are a student and

feel you may benefit from counseling, you are invited to contact your school

counselor for further screening.

If you have any questions about mental health resources for students, you can

also contact Tim Fosshage, Director of Pupil Services, at (920) 788-7900.
