Dear Janssen School Community,

As a school, we welcome back everyone from winter break and we wish

each of our families an amazing 2019. Our students have done a really

good job transitioning back to their daily routines resulting in a school

filled with opportunities to learn and the practice of our community val-

ues. Our staff has returned, excited—ready to continue their learning

for our students’ learning. I too am excited to see our children continue

to grow as students and citizens.

As the end of the first Semester approaches, our teachers are collecting

and analyzing their data on student learning in preparation for com-

pleting student progress reports. As a parent, you will be able to access

your child’s progress reports in Infinite Campus on the evening of Janu-

ary 25. For more specific information, please reference the letter that

we sent you earlier this month. We believe teacher/parent communica-

tion is important for building school/family relationships. Whenever

you have any questions on your child’s learning experiences at Janssen,

please connect with his or her teachers.

On Friday, January 18, we will run our annual science fair in the morn-

ing. I want to thank our science fair committee for their leadership in

organizing this big event. About one-third of our students are partici-

pating as scientists. Our lunch room and gym will be packed with our

scientists running and explaining their experiments with parent volun-

teers assisting when necessary. A big thank you to our parent volun-

teers as well.

I want to end this month’s newsletter with a big reason why I believe

Janssen is a great place for our students to learn and grow: it’s our stu-

dents. Yes, we as adults want them to learn and more importantly our

students want to learn and grow. How do we know? They tell us. They

want to be readers, writers, mathematicians, musicians, and artists.

They want to be good citizens. Because of what they want, we are to

provide the conditions to make that happen.

Sincerely,

Hercules Nikolaou, Ph.D.

EMERGENCY MEDICATIONS

Please be aware that emergency medications

that are provided for use during the school day

will not be accessible before or after school

hours. Parents and students must plan ahead to

have emergency medication available during

school activities such as clubs and sports. If an

emergency arises and a student does not have

their emergency medication available, 911 will

be called.

ARE YOU ON OUR MAILING LIST?

We want to ensure parents of young children

(age 0-5) in our District are on our mailing list,

so you can receive information relative to your

child’s age group, such as early childhood

screening information or 4K and 5K registration

information. We also need to have information

for all children age 0-21 for state reporting.

Click on this link https://goo.gl/DFjSne to com-

plete the census form, or complete and mail the

census form found here https://goo.gl/TkNvX6. If

you know of other families with children in our

District that may not be in our system, please

help us by sharing this information with them.

JANSSEN COUNSELOR CORNER

Happy New Year Janssen Families!

I hope everyone had a great holiday season and

that 2019 is treating you well so far.

Life Skills Class Updates

Life Skills classes at every grade are now transi-

tioning into lessons about emotions and empa-

thy. Students are learning what emotions are

and how they can tell how they, and others, are

feeling. The students will learn how to regulate

their emotions when those emotions become ele-

vated. This is skill is very important, especially

for elementary students. It does not always come

easy, but we practice using a variety of coping

skills like belly breathing, counting, and positive

self-talk in order to help the students find what

best works for them.

Students are also learning about empathy and

putting themselves in another person’s shoes.

Empathy helps us get along better with others

because with empathy we exercise compassion

and think about kind ways that we can respond

to how others are feeling.

Kindness Challenge

During the week of January 28th, Janssen will

again be participating in the Great Kindness

Challenge. This is a nationwide bullying preven-

tion event that focuses on cultivating kindness

within our schools. There will be a letter in this

week’s take home papers that explains more.

Donated Items

We recently received a donation of a couple of

kid’s comforters and bed sheet sets, including

pillow cases. If you or a family you know is in

need of these items, please contact me.

JANSSEN PBIS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

Here is what is happening at Janssen this

month!

Monthly Character Trait

Our character trait for the month of January is

self-discipline. In the middle of winter kids can

often get antsy and restless, so this trait is a

good one to focus on during this time of year.

During morning Paws and community circles in

the classrooms, we are focusing on what it

means to have self-discipline and how you can

use that trait at school, home and in the commu-

nity.

The Great Kindness Challenge

The PBIS committee is once again planning for

Janssen to be a part of the Great Kindness Chal-

lenge during the week of January 28th. This is a

nationwide bullying prevention event that focus-

es on cultivating kindness within our schools.

There will be a letter in this week’s take home

papers that explains more.

DECEMBER MVPs

January 14, 2019 Dear Janssen Families, This letter is to announce that Janssen will, again, be participating in the Great Kindness Challenge. During the week of January 28th, Janssen will join thousands of schools across the country to create a culture of kindness. Your child will be part of a powerful and positive bullying prevention initiative that will lead to more kindness, unity, and respect at school and beyond. During this week, our school will focus on the importance of acts of kindness through fun activities like dress up days (see flyer included with send home papers), art projects, a special section of the library highlighting “kind” books, as well as thoughtful lessons and discussions in their classrooms. In addition, each child will receive a Great Kindness Challenge checklist that includes kind activities that students will complete throughout the week with their class or on their own. We also invite you to participate as a family using the Family Edition Great Kindness Challenge. This checklist, as well as more information about the Great Kindness Challenge, can be found on their website, www.thegreatkindnesschallenge.com Together, let’s show the world that…..
