Welcome to this production of Leoš Janáček’s Katya Kabanova, the first time that the work has been presented by Seattle Opera. When we think of the great operas, naturally Italian, German, and French works first spring to mind; works written in Czech generally feature further down the list. Indeed, it took a while for word of Janáček’s operas to spread beyond his native land, and were it not for some pioneering work of the conductor Sir Charles Mackerras in the 1960s, they may well have rested in relative obscurity. But opinion has changed, and now Janáček is recognized as one of the truly great opera composers of the twentieth century.

My first acquaintance with Katya Kabanova was a long time ago. The performance was in London at English National Opera, and I was about 14 years old. Delayed in the London rush-hour traffic, I took my seat moments before the houselights dimmed. In those distant pre-supertitle days, we relied heavily on the printed synopsis in the program to know what was going on; but in this case, the program book was an object lesson of what not to do! A muddy-green typeface set against a slightly lighter, swirled, muddy-green background is not the easiest thing to read at the best of times, let alone in a darkened auditorium. So, as the conductor entered the pit, I steeled myself for an opening act at maximum concentration levels. What I wasn’t prepared for was the extraordinary impact the music made on me from the very first bars. (It was much later that I realized that with Charles Mackerras at the podium, I was in the very safest of hands!) This was a sound-world I had never experienced before. From its opening bars, the opera overwhelmed with a sense of savage beauty coupled with a dramatic intensity onstage. Even though I was desperately trying to follow every line of the dialogue—it was sung in English, I hasten to add!—I was aware from the get-go that the characters were real people, not stereotypes. There was a sense of inexorable tragedy in the air. I knew that the storm, which begins the final act, was a metaphor for the pent-up emotions of the two protagonists and that a death was somehow inevitable at the denouement.

That performance of Katya Kabanova was the beginning of a life-long devotion to Janáček’s operas. They have cropped up throughout both my directing and my producing careers, and even at my wedding, where my wife and I left the church to the joyous strains of the nuptial dance from The Cunning Little Vixen! But although Janáček’s works have now become relatively mainstream, one can never understate their inherent difficulty for the performers. Janáček’s compositional and notation style was highly eccentric, and a correct feel for the Czech language is crucial to the rhythmic pulse of the score. So it is with great pleasure that we give a debut to a true Janáček specialist, our maestro, Oliver von Dohnányi. And with this new Seattle Opera production, our creative team of Patrick Nolan, Genevieve Blanchett, and Mark Howett have made a truly exciting dramatic framework for the piece that will ensure that this great opera makes the same indelible impression on you as it did on a young operagoer all those years ago.

Welcome! Thank you for joining us here at McCaw Hall. This is a wonderful time to be a part of the Seattle Opera family, especially as we continue rolling out details of Seattle Opera at the Center, our project to build a new civic opera center next door on the site of Mercer Arena. Many people think our company operates out of offices right here in the hall, but that is not the case. Our current rehearsal and administrative facilities are located in South Lake Union, in a converted warehouse that’s approaching the end of its useful life. Once our lease expires in October 2018, we will have a new, welcoming facility built on the northeast corner of Seattle Center that will truly bring opera to all.

I invite our whole community to support this monumental project. This is an investment in the future of opera, as we continue to find more and better ways to connect with our community. For the first time, we will have dedicated space to expand our Education and Community Engagement programs, which already serve nearly 80,000 children and adults in schools and neighborhoods across Washington State. Imagine what more we can do with a purpose-built hub of activity, with a variety of programs for all ages and backgrounds scheduled throughout the year!

Our private fundraising goal is $28.5 million, and we’re already more than 60 percent of the way there. As a strong sign of support from our leadership, the Seattle Opera Board of Directors has given a total of $12.5 million toward this project. Some of us on the Board are choosing to give our largest personal contribution to Seattle Opera we’ve ever made because we know how vital this project is for our Pacific Northwest arts community. We want Seattle Opera to continue to inspire the audiences and artists of tomorrow. In particular, I’d like to thank Immediate Past Board President Maryanne Tagney and her husband David Jones for the largest campaign gift to date. Maryanne continues to be a fearless advocate for Seattle Opera at the Center, and I am proud to partner with her and the rest of our committed Board of Directors. Be sure to read more about Seattle Opera at the Center on page 32 in the program, look for our display in the grand lobby, or visit seattleopera.org/atthecenter.

Other exciting events on the horizon include the Seattle Opera Gala: Beyond the Stage, which is our big fundraiser of the year in support of Seattle Opera and its Education and Community Engagement programs. This year, we will incorporate the fanciful splendor of the upcoming Magic Flute, featuring special guest Zandra Rhodes—the costume designer for the production, whose work you may recall from The Pearl Fishers last season. It’s going to be a wonderful celebration, and I hope you can join us on April 22! Learn more at seattleopera.org/gala.

THE STORYACT ONEScene 1: Outside the Kabanov house, afternoon

Kudrjas, a science teacher, admires the beauty of the river. The servant Glasha is unimpressed. Dikoj arrives, rebuking his nephew Boris for his laziness. He leaves when he learns Kabanicha, the matriarch of the household, is not at home. Left alone with Kudrjas, Boris explains he only stays with his uncle because of a provision in his grandmother’s will: if he and his sister are to claim their inheritance, they must respect their uncle and do as he says. Boris also admits to Kudrjas he has fallen in love with Katya Kabanova, wife of Tichon Kabanov.

When the Kabanov family returns from church, Kabanicha orders her son, Tichon, to leave at once for the market in a nearby city. She complains that he neglects her for his wife, Katya, and rebukes Katya when she dares to answer. Varvara, Tichon’s younger adopted sister, criticizes him for drinking too much and not defending his wife from his mother’s attacks.

Scene 2: Inside the Kabanov house, afternoon

Katya tells Varvara of her happy childhood. Varvara encourages Katya to talk about her dreams. Katya says she hears a man’s voice whispering in her ear, urging her to run away with him. Tichon appears, about to leave for market as his mother has ordered. Kabinicha insists that Tichon lay down the law for Katya before he leaves: she must respect and obey Kabanicha and not look at other men.

ACT TWOScene 1: Inside the Kabanov house, late afternoon

Kabanicha reproaches Katya for not making a show of grief at Tichon’s departure. Once Kabanicha has left the room, Varvara reveals she has stolen the key to the garden gate; she tells Katya she will ask Boris to come to the garden. Katya nervously takes the key, hurriedly hiding it when Kabanicha re-enters with Dikoj, who is drunk.

Scene 2: Outside the Kabanovs’ garden gate Kudrjas arrives in the garden, waiting for Varvara. Boris arrives, hoping to meet Katya. Kudrjas warns him of the risks involved. Varvara tells Boris that Katya is coming, and then goes off with Kudrjas toward the river. Katya soon arrives. Boris declares his passion. Katya is guarded but ultimately concedes her impassioned feelings for him. Kudrjas and Varvara tell them it’s time to separate. Katya goes back through the gate, leaving Boris behind.

INTERMISSION

ACT THREEScene 1: Two days later, outside a ruined church overlooking the river

Seeking shelter from a storm, Kudrjas and his friend Kuligin notice old paintings of hell and the damned still visible on the ruined wall of a church that burned down. Dikoj arrives to take shelter. Kudrjas thinks the storm is “just electricity,” while Dikoj considers the storm a punishment from God.

Varvara tells Boris that Tichon has returned unexpectedly, prompting Katya to become hysterical. Other townsfolk, including Kabanicha and Tichon, soon gather, seeking shelter from the storm. Arriving panicked, Katya publicly confesses her infidelity. She rushes out into the storm.

Scene 2: On the banks of the river

Tichon and Glasha are searching for Katya. Varvara and Kudrjas decide to run away together to the big city. Katya enters alone. Confused, she regrets her confession and longs for death. Boris arrives and tells her that his uncle is sending him away. Katya will remain at the mercy of her mother-in-law and drunken husband.

Boris leaves and Katya imagines her grave. Crossing her arms, she throws herself into the river. A search party enters, and Dikoj arrives with Katya’s corpse. Tichon blames his mother for Katya’s death. Kabanicha thanks all the neighbors for their kindness.

LEARNING KATYA By Jessica Murphy Moo

Sopranos Melody Moore and Corinne Winters have graced the stages of the finest opera houses around the world, putting their personal stamp on the standard-rep Puccini and Verdi roles we know and love. Moore has recently ventured into Wagner’s repertoire as Senta and Freia. And Winters has recently performed Verdi’s Desdemona and Violetta, which is becoming a signature role. Seattle audiences enjoyed her La traviata just last month.

But both of these accomplished singers have also eagerly awaited the opportunity to sing the role of Katya Kabanova, a role that audiences don’t get to hear as often as some, and that we are hearing for the first time here in Seattle.

What’s the draw? Who is Katya and why is her character worth exploring, along with the added challenges of having to sing in Czech and to sing Janáček’s music, which is a language all its own as well?

One draw is the complexity of the character herself. Moore is drawn to the challenge of portraying—of singing—the role of a woman who really has no voice.

“She is silenced by her mother-figure, by her friends,” Moore says. “They tell her how to feel. ‘You should try this. You should do this.’”

And while the original opera took place in a small Russian village on the Volga River, and this production sets the drama in a small town in 1950s America, Moore doesn’t see the community as much of a stretch to a contemporary sensibility. Being judged by one’s community is all too familiar an experience. “We can identify if we’ve ever worked in an office, as part of a community where we know everything there is to know about 'Sally’s husband' and everyone eats at Quiznos for lunch because that’s the only place to go... It’s the day in and day out gossip, where people pass moral judgment.”

Winters is also interested in Katya’s desire for freedom from those restrictions. In her first moment alone, Katya sings of freedom, how she longs to be free, to fly away like a bird.

So why doesn’t she up and leave? This crucial question made Winters look more closely at the psychology of this role. She notes that Katya’s first line to Kabanicha, her controlling and verbally abusive mother-in-law, is, “You are like a mother to me.” That she has accepted Kabanicha as a maternal figure speaks both to the limits of Katya’s external circumstances and to her internal emotional life. “It’s almost as if she’s a battered child,” Winters says.

When we hear Katya say, “Some strange longing is creeping into my head, and there’s no place to escape it,” we know that Katya is trapped, inside and out. Moore notes that Katya is perhaps more akin to Virginia Woolf than to the many opera heroines who take their own lives.

The other draw to a role like Katya is the music. Katya can’t escape and neither can the audience. Janáček’s music doesn’t allow us the relief that an easy melody might subconsciously provide.

“The text is written like theater,” says Winters. “The music is emotional without being sentimental, nothing gushy about it. It’s true and real.” What we hear from the singers will be close to the pace of

the spoken word. The events of the opera happen almost in real time.

Moore will arrive in Seattle after two other debuts, so she has a lot of new work at the front of mind. She performed “The Tell-Tale Heart,” based on an Edgar Allan Poe story at SubCulture NYC and then Bruckner’s “Te Deum” with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. But learning Janáček was a challenge all its own. She worked with five language coaches before she could find someone who would work all the way through the score with her, working at the piano for hours and hours a day. “I had to say, ‘Tell my wife not to call me’,” she quipped. “The meter changes every other bar! And the consonants are crazy!”

Winters is grateful that Seattle Opera could hear that her voice was moving in the right direction for a role like Katya. “You need certain qualities—roundness and vulnerability—but also an ‘edge’ to cut through the huge orchestration,” she says.

Both of these sopranos welcome the role’s challenge and its newness, and it’s clear their careers have been created out of a certain versatility. While they are now firmly situated in the operatic repertoire, neither of them started there. Winters began in a chorus and singing pop music at open mics. Moore thought she was going to get a degree in music therapy when

she was encouraged to switch to a vocal performance degree.

After Katya, both sopranos will dive back into the familiar. Moore will head to Los Angeles for Tosca, a role she has performed four times. And Winters will head out on a west coast drive, after three full months in Seattle. She’ll hit Portland, the Redwoods, and San Francisco, before ending in San Diego, where she’ll be performing in a 1920s-era staging of La traviata. Will their experiences with Katya inform and color the leading ladies they already know so well? We’ll have to follow these incredible sopranos to find out.

SMALL TOWN, BIG MUSIC By Jonathan Dean

Somewhere along the Puget Sound, or maybe the Columbia, water laps the shores of a seemingly idyllic small town. Some can’t get enough of the dazzling view, the peace and possibility; others have a very different experience. One woman is feeling trapped, tired of a marriage that isn’t working, frustrated by a community that asks little and offers less. Like any prisoner, she will seek escape.

Katya Kabanova could indeed happen anywhere. Brokeback Mountain set a similar story in the western US, Far From Heaven in the east. Czech composer Leoš Janáček based his opera on a play with a very specific cultural context: The Storm by Alexander Ostrovsky, set in the small Russian town of Kalinov, along the mighty Volga, in the mid-nineteenth century. From his urban, intellectual life in Moscow, Ostrovsky had traveled the entire length of the river and was responding to specific contemporary issues in his social drama. Janáček, however, saw the universal possibilities, the human journey at the core of Ostrovsky’s story. What’s more, he knew that music would inevitably transform realistic local detail into something almost mythic. The composer refashioned a Czech translation of the play into the exact libretto he needed to write one of twentieth-century opera’s most compelling tragedies.

In adapting Ostrovsky’s play, Janáček tightened the focus on Katya, only one of many intriguing characters in The Storm. He deleted much and re-ordered the scenes, so that Katya’s experience of love and sex is framed by the casual affair of Varvara and Kudrjas, on the one hand, and the grotesque liaison of Kabanicha and Dikoj, on the other. Katya, her husband, and her lover are neither as simple as the former, nor as ridiculous as the latter.

In Kabanicha and Dikoj, Ostrovsky was satirizing specifically Russian types: the autocratic matriarch and the samodur or unpredictable petty tyrant. Neither of these disagreeable characters has the stature of real villains; they’re more akin to the clowns of commedia dell’arte, universally recognizable despite very specific local origins. Building on his experience writing satire in his previous opera, The Excursions of Mr. Brouček, Janáček renders Dikoj’s boorish galumphing and Kabanicha’s

shrewish nagging precisely in music. But unlike Brouček, Katya Kabanova is no comedy. It’s dark even for Janáček, and these two appear all the nastier because of that darkness. Audiences may be inclined to agree with Tichon at the end, when he tells Kabanicha, “You’re the one who killed her!” But that’s way overstated. Tichon not only bungles his life, marriage, and family, he even gets the moral of his story wrong.

If it’s almost too easy to hate Kabanicha and Dikoj, it’s almost too easy to like Varvara and Kudrjas. Janáček stacks the deck in this younger couple’s favor by giving them the opera’s most hummable tunes, catchy folk songs full of the pungent eastern modal flavors the composer had spent much of his career collecting and studying. But if he wasn't writing a comedy, he wasn’t writing a

Seattle Opera 2016/17 Season16

folk opera, either. (Folk operas had been popular in Czech-speaking Bohemia and Moravia a generation earlier.) By giving this appealing young couple folk music, Janáček characterizes their relationship as uncomplicated, attractive, and impersonal. They represent hookup culture, easy-come easy-go couplings in which no real feelings are risked.

Nobody in Janáček’s little world feels as deeply as Katya herself. Janáček sharply diminished the role of Kuligin, who’s the moral center of Ostrovsky’s play, the Tevye of this Anatevka: an idealized Everyman, spokesman for the playwright’s social criticism. Less interested in social critique, Janáček made his extraordinary orchestra tell the story (rather than Kuligin). Not only does the orchestra feel everything Katya feels at each moment of her story, the orchestra extends that compassion to

us: in the music we hear all her frustration, longing, anxiety, bliss, crushing guilt, pain, and emptiness.

Janáček made one other telling change to the structure of the piece. In the play, Katya does indeed beg her pushover husband to demand from her a solemn oath that she won’t look at other men while he’s out of town, with as little result. But in the opera, she does so before her mother-in-law compels Tichon to make the same demand, not after. Kabanicha, concerned as ever with tradition and keeping up appearances, considers such an exchange the proper formality: of course a husband must lay down the law before he parts from his wife. Katya, however, has a burning human need for her husband to show her some sign of affection. Does he not value her at all? Wouldn’t he mind if she took a lover? Her longing for

love is so extreme, she’d even accept an old-fashioned chest-thumping display of patriarchal possessiveness as a gesture of love. By repositioning this scene, Janáček makes it clear that Katya’s problem isn’t so simple, so external, as having an awful mother-in-law. Her problem is internal; her awful mother-in-law only repeats what she has already said. Katya already has her own inner Kabanicha.

What can she do about it? She can’t turn that voice off; it’s part of her. If she were to turn it outwards, she might learn how to compel and extort Tichon’s love the way his mother does. But by doing so her humanity would be silenced. She’d have to become the next Kabanicha, an empty shell of a person, defined by social status and hierarchy and dominance, not by the music that plays so beautifully inside her. Instead, Katya chooses the music.

STAFF CHAT: ALBERT SANDERSAlbert Sanders, Senior Account Representative for Seattle Opera’s Direct Sales team since 2001, loves to share his enthusiasm for an art form that speaks to his heart. We spoke about his own career in theater—on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theaters around the country. As an actor he aimed for impeccable comic timing—of course!—but mostly for authenticity, which is a quality Albert brings offstage and into the connections he makes in our community. —Jessica Murphy Moo

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR JOB IN DIRECT SALES? Basically, we wear two hats. We fundraise, and we try to put people in seats by talking about the season. Because I’ve been going to opera for a very long time, I’m able to share my experiences and get people excited about coming, especially if they don’t know the opera. People tell me their opera stories and I tell them mine. I can be on the phone and have a wonderful conversation for a half hour. It’s great fun. I just love it.

ARE THERE COMMON RESPONSES FROM PEOPLE? Not so much. Everyone finds that one moment that spoke to them. And it might not be a “big” moment. One of my favorite moments in Traviata is when she reads the letter from Germont. Some singers will be terribly melodramatic and some singers read it simply; it is so important because it

builds to the death scene. Moments like that are not the big obvious moments, but they bring something to life. It’s the same in the theater. Magic happens in the strangest of places, unexpected places, the little moments.

HAVE YOU SEEN KATYA KABANOVA BEFORE? No. I’m so excited about it. The story is tension-packed. Seattle Opera’s dramaturg Jon Dean came into the office and played some of the music for us. I had never heard it before—I’d never heard any Janáček before—and I thought why do I know this? I realized it reminded me of the film scores of Alfred Hitchcock’s films. All the music is very high-wire emotional ….

THAT’S YOUR HOOK. Exactly! It’s a high-wire act, a take-no-prisoners kind of situation.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITES? I call myself an Italian olive-oil opera fan. I love long, long lines of music, long legato… Lucia di Lammermoor is one of my favorites.

HOW DID YOU FIRST COME TO OPERA? My grandfather took me to the Met to see Madame Butterfly. At 10 years old, I didn’t know what I was watching. But when the curtain came down, tears were coming down his face, and I thought, “This must be really important.” So I started listening to the Met broadcasts, and one thing led to another and I’ve been going ever since.

When I moved to New York in the late ’60s, I started going practically once a week to New York City Opera. I’ve seen Beverly Sills in everything she’s ever done. And then when I had a few more bucks, I crossed the plaza to the Met, though I felt a little disloyal.

YOU SPENT YOUR CAREER IN THEATER. YOU MUST HAVE SOME GOOD STORIES! When I was doing Not in the Book, Maureen O’Sullivan “went up.” She couldn’t remember the opening lines, which in this play set up everything. So I came on with a newspaper and I gave all the exposition. “Did you hear about this? Did you hear about that?” It was scary! But some of the scariest moments are the truest moments because there’s no artifice involved.

In 1972, I was in the ensemble of Captain Brassbound’s Conversion, starring Ingrid Bergman. I was also the understudy for the comic lead, and I had to stand in for that role during the final rehearsal. I knew the part, but just looking Ingrid Bergman in the eyes told me exactly what to do! Once, when we were in New York, I invited her to my apartment for lunch because I lived nearby and she was always overwhelmed with autograph requests at the local restaurants. I knocked on the door, and my partner was wondering, “What is he doing home now? Did he forget his keys?” He opened the door and there was Ms. Bergman herself. We had leftover tuna casserole for lunch. It was wonderful.

In collaboration with Seattle Youth Symphony’s Marrowstone Music Festival, Seattle Opera will hold this three-week voice and performance training program at Western Washington University in Bellingham from July 16 to August 6 for singers ages 16-22.

THE GOAL“We want to create experiences for voice students that they might not have otherwise,” says Education and Community Engagement Director Barbara Lynne Jamison, “experiences that will support their developing voices and augment their college curriculum.”

The Academy will have opportunities for students who want to sing principal roles and for students who are interested in singing in the chorus. All students will receive instruction in acting, diction, and vocal health. Students will also have the opportunity to perform in a Brahms concert (July 29) and a production of Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land (August 4 and 5), both presented with full orchestra.

“Few undergrads have the opportunity to sing fully staged roles with orchestra,” Jamison says. At universities these roles can often go to graduate students or even faculty members. “A production

like Tender Land is perfect because it has choral roles and plenty of solo opportunities appropriate for young adults.”

Seattle Opera’s dynamic—and growing!—youth programming aims to prepare young students for entry into the highest caliber vocal performance degrees around the country. Through Seattle Opera Academy at Marrowstone, Seattle Opera aims to act as a crucial bridge between youth programs and graduate vocal performance programs.

APPLICATIONS OPEN NOW!Seattle Opera is accepting applications through April 17 (with a discount if you apply by March 17).

Each applicant must submit a video audition that includes three classical pieces (one must be an aria, one must be in English).

Pacifica Law Group, like Seattle Opera, was founded to serve communities in the Pacific Northwest. The law firm’s commitment to the region and its people is demonstrated through partnerships with various nonprofit organizations in Seattle and across Washington.

For the last three seasons, Pacifica Law Group has sponsored Seattle Opera’s Concierge Desk, where audience members can resolve ticketing and other issues directly with Seattle Opera staff prior to every performance at McCaw Hall.

In addition, Pacifica Law Group’s volunteerism has led to collaborations with more than 70 area nonprofits. Providing expert support to these groups strengthens their ability to provide services to communities throughout the Northwest. The Legal Foundation of Washington recently recognized Pacifica Law Group for its commitment to equal justice for all people by naming the firm a Champion of Justice in 2017.

Seattle Opera is proud to recognize Pacifica Law Group for its service to our shared community.

We are grateful to the Fred Rogers family, whose building has housed our operations since 1990. However, our lease ends in October 2018 with no viable option to renew. Nothing matters more to Seattle Opera’s long-term health than the successful completion of the building that will house our education, artistic, and administrative spaces.

More than just replacing our present operation home, which is at the end of its useful life, this new dynamic building on the northeast corner of Seattle Center will help unlock opera for all.

WELCOMING AND ACCESSIBLE COMMUNITY RESOURCE Anyone will be able to view technical and artistic trades and participate in theater workshops. Spaces will support partnerships with our fellow nonprofit arts organizations and allow us to expand low-fee and admission-free programming.

EXPANDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO ENRICH AND INSPIRE Multimedia space for community and education programs will invite arts lovers and novices of all ages to discover, create, play, and perform. Service to the community outside of McCaw Hall will grow when we have appropriate space to prepare for classes, camps, workshops, and lectures.

PURPOSE-BUILT ENVIRONMENT FOR WORLD-CLASS ARTISTRY We are expanding rehearsal space and efficiently coordinating the layout of our production spaces, coaching rooms, and scenic and costume facilities. For the first time, we will be able to roll scenery directly from assembly to rehearsal and straight to the McCaw Hall stage! (See rendering on page 33.)

As of February 4, 2017, we have raised 65 percent of our private fundraising goal of $28.5 million. We have made great progress thanks to the generosity of our Board of Directors, individual and foundation contributors, as well as support from the City of Seattle, King County, and the State of Washington.

Your support will make a difference. Leave a lasting legacy for you and your loved ones with named donor recognition in the new building.

You can help Seattle Opera build a new civic home next to McCaw Hall. Support your opera company's bold vision to make opera accessible to everyone.

IN MEMORIAM: SUE HUBBACH

Sue Hubbach believed that the type of opera she experienced as a young woman in New York had every ability to thrive in Seattle and was always willing to help it get there. For Sue, opera was not only a multi-faceted art form for the big stage, opera had the rare ability to offer something to everyone.

Sue Hubbach grew up in the Pacific Northwest as part of the Fisher family who founded Fisher Communications. She went to the University of Washington and studied home economics, later becoming a dietician. Her love of opera began in 1936 when she attended her first opera, Lohengrin, in Seattle and a year later as she completed an internship in New York City, where she also saw her second opera, Tosca, on the Met Opera stage. Her love affair with opera followed her back to Seattle where she married and raised her family.

She often told me that she supported Seattle Opera because she could always pick a winner. She had a natural business savvy even though she rarely admitted it. Once she confided that her father didn’t think that his daughters had a place in business, so he set aside dollars in a trust fund rather than giving them shares in the family business. She used her funds to purchase her own shares and invested her earnings to support causes she cared about. That generosity extended to organizations such as the Girl Scouts, education, and Seattle Opera. She was a longtime member of the Seattle Opera Guild. She joined the Seattle Opera Board in 1986 and the advisory board in 2007, and she was later distinguished as an honorary lifetime member.

Sue and I had many conversations about opera, and those conversations always got down to brass tacks. Her questions lacked pretension—she wasn’t interested in debating the pedigree of singers or suggesting repertoire (that was for the experts). She only wanted to know what the company needed help with to succeed. She gave from her heart, and she gave to Seattle Opera because she truly believed in its potential to become, in her words, “one of the best opera companies in the world.”
