Roller skates were invented by Joseph Merlin for an 18th -century masquerade performed in London, but they failed to become popular. surprisingly,in-line skates were invented as early as 1823,almost 40 years before four-wheeled skates.

Roller skates made their first public appearance in 1760 at Mrs. Cornelly’s asquerade at Carlisle House in Soho Square,London,England. They were the invention of instrument-maker Joseph Merlin [ Belgium ],who made a spectacular entrance, playing the violin and wearing skates that ran on wooden spools. It is perhaps not surprising that his invention failed to start a new trend, because he swept gracefully across the ballroom into a huge mirror, smashing the mirror, his violin and himself.Merlin survived, but his injuries were not a great advertisement for roller skating.

Sixty-three years later,on 22 April 1823,Robert John Tyers [England] was granted a patent for ‘apparatus to be attached to boots…for the purpose of travelling or pleasure. ‘These roller skates, which Tyers called Volitos, were a conscious imitation of an earlier invention, each skate having five wheels in a single line to imitate the blades of ice skates and were first demonstrated by Tyers on a tennis court in Windmill Street,Soho,London.Tyers had a slightly greater number of imitators than Merlin and a similar type of skate was used in 1849 for the first production of Jakob Meyerbeer’sopera The Prophet, which called for ice-skating in the third act:in-line skates were used as a cheaper alternative to creating an ice rink on stage.

But roller-skating only really took off after James Leonard Plimpton [USA] invented four-wheeled roller skates in 1862 [patent granted 6 January 1863,USA].The wheels were made of wood with a special mechanism for turning: ‘The rollers are runners made to turn or cramp like the wheels of a wagon by the rocking or canting of the stock or footstand to facilitate the turning of a skate.’Plimpton, who had already patented a fastening for ice skates, called his new invention ‘parlor skates ‘because he intended them to be used indoors or on a rink.In 1866 he opened the world’s first roller rink,in Newport, Rhode Island and started a national craze for roller skating.

Roller-skating timeline

1760 Joseph Merlin [Belgium]invents roller skates, but his demonstration at a masquerade in London ends disastrously.

1823 Robert John Tyers [England] is granted a patent for in-line roller skates.

ROLLER SKATES

1840 A beer hall in Berlin,Germany, puts its barmaids on roller skates.

1849 Roller skates are used in a production of Jakob Meyerbeer’s opera The Prophet in Paris,France.

1863 Plimpton is granted a US patent for the first four-wheeled roller skates[ GB patent granted 1865 ].

1866 Plimpton is granted a patent for an improved turning mechanism and opens the first roller rink at the Atlantic House Hotel in Newport,Rhode Island.

1869 A.J.Gibson [USA] is granted a patent for the invention of circular plates that enable the wheels to be steered to facilitate changing direction, rather than merely canting as in Plimpton’s 1866 invention.

1875 The Belgravia Skating Rink in London opens as England’s first roller-rink.

1878 The game of Rink Polo[later Roller Hockey] is invented.

1880 Micajah Henley [USA] patents several inventions including brake pads, adjustable bindings and with his nephew Robert Henley, ball bearings to improve turning.

1936 Britain wins the inaugural Roller Hockey World Championship.

INSSAN 26th National Convention at Pune on 8th & 9th January –2016 Report from Western India Chapter

Western India Chapter (WIC) hosted 26th Annual National Convention at Hotel Arora Towers Pune. The Theme for the Convention was “Explore, Evolve, Excel through Employee Engagement with a tag line Continuously towards World Class”. This is the 2nd Convention held at Pune (earlier being in 2011) since WIC’s revival in Mid 2010.

Organizing Committee INSSAN – WIC:

Educative Skit

The traditional lamp lighting was replaced by an innovative way of e-lighting. A click on mouse does the “sanai” lamp lighting on the screen. This was followed by an “Educative Skit” which was enjoyed by one and all.

Mr Ahir made very interesting and Thought provoking speech during Inauguration Session.

Mr Ahir rightly pointed out to the fact that while US is looking at Suggestion Schemes more from Economic Perspective, the Japanese suggestion schemes are more employee focused and that is why the

growth of suggestion scheme is more prominent in Japan.

He then mentioned about the Cultural and Philosophical context of looking at Suggestion Schemes by Asians. He mentioned that unlike in USA, an Indian employee still has fear to talk to his Boss and thus Suggestion Scheme is an excellent platform to air his views and ideas. The Indian Managers however need to understand this context and demonstrate to employees that “You Matter, We respect you”. Indian Managers should also take care that there are customised responses to each Suggestions instead of standerdised responses.

Mr Ahir further talked about Opportunities and Challenges in front of Suggestion Scheme Administrators In India.

He suggested that Suggestion Box Office must leverage the availability of Technology in forms of various communication

channels (like Mobile/Web based Applications, Social Media communications etc). The Technological developments can provide tremendous opportunities in terms of faster and effective communication with various stakeholders like Suggestors/Evaluators/ Implementors etc.

Collaborative approach of connecting various departments for implementing suggestions and also knowledge sharing through various platforms like Conventions/Association meetings will help.

Anything that is monotonous is going to decay. Suggestion Box Office thus need to create waves of excitements in the Schemes. This can be created through introduction of theme based Suggestion Schemes periodically. He quoted few examples at reliance like “Workplace for Disabled”; “Road Safety” etc. The office was successful to converge the focus of entire workforce on the topics. The periodic communication and support from Top Bosses is also essential.

As the Convention Theme has pointed “moving continuously towards World Class”, he suggested that INSSAN must have a Maturity Model (in line with many Business Excellence Models).

The Scheme running in INSSAN Companies must be far more superior than the scheme freshly introduced in the new Company. Each and every company must relook at their scheme periodically in terms of Approach/performance Indicators/ Stakeholders expectations and modify the scheme. May be trained evaluators from INSSAN can do the Assessment of the stage in which the company suggestion scheme is operating and suggest OFIs. There should be both Efficiency and Effectiveness measurement Indicators in the Scheme.

Mr Sudhir Gogate Executive Director at KEIHIN FIE (Pvt) Ltd was the Chief Guest. He is also Managing Trustee of “Initiative of Change” who conducts “Ethical Leadership” training programmes through its various centers at Panchagani/ Bangaluru etc. He emphasized the fact that We Indians must look at our Cultural roots and connect it with Suggestion Schemes. Problem identification is important for idea generation. He also mentioned that like 5 Why analysis we must us our 5 Senses to generate an Idea. Observation/Understanding/Analysis/Conclusion are four important phases in Idea generation. Thus gathering problems in a subtle ways and Passionate suggestion committee are two very important ingredients for effective Suggestion Scheme as per him.

In order to break the monotony of Award distribution, WIC had arranged the Award Distribution Programme on first day itself for Slogan / Poster Contest Award Winners.

Past the Inauguration Session, the Presentations started in 3 Halls. Best Case Study contest Presentations were in Hall 1 & 2 while Theme Paper Presentations in Hall 3. WIC had invited Industry Managers as Session Chairpersons for these 3 concurrent sessions. The insights given by these Session Chairpersons were useful for Presenters.

For this Convention, the Case Study entries were categorized into entries from “Operatives Category” and from “Other than Operatives Category”. The entries were then subcategorized in “Productivity/Quality/Cost/ Delivery, Safety, Morale, Energy, Environment DSME/Service categories. The Presentation sequence was arranged as per this categorization. This helped Delegates to attend the presentations of Interest. There were 15 sessions (five each in 3 Halls) till next day afternoon. Lunch/Tea/Snacks arrangement was on Terrace alongside Pool and Delegates used this break for Networking.

During the evening, NHQ had requested for meeting. Representatives from NHQ, NIC and WIC Members attended this meeting.

Valedictory function:

Dr. Sudhir Hasamnis Ex Tata Motors, was “Guest Speaker”. He talked about Ideation Techniques with numerous examples of showed the various techniques Manager can use to generate ideas from employee workforce. The highlight of this session

Mr Girish Wagh Head Project, Planning & Project management Tata Motors Ltd. attended the Valedictory function as Chief Guest He is famous as “Nano man” in Automobile World. Ms Anjali Byce Director HR SKF India Ltd. was Guest of Honor.

During her energetic speech after lunch Ms Anjali Byce praised and motivated the Delegates. All Suggesters as per her opinion are doing patriotic service and this made each delegates proud of themselves. She further mentioned that suggesters should learn to be more patient. There will be moments, when suggestion gets rejected, but one should never loose heart. You need to remain focused and determined to give new suggestions.

Mr. Girish Wagh narrated his experience of shifting Nano Plant from Singur to Sanand in flat 14 months. He stressed the point that Innovative culture is possible in Companies not only on account of Creativity but it requires detailed planning and Disciplined Execution. This was a new thought for most of the delegates and we hope, Delegates will build on this thought and work towards it. An Organizational Innovation is possible only if there are like-minded people with Passion with above qualities.

In all 131 prizes were distributed for various contests such as Best Suggestor, Best Evaluator, Best Theme Paper, Slogan Hindi, Slogan English, Poster and Excellence in Suggestion Scheme.

Highlights:

The response to 26th National Convention was good as seen from the following table.

42 Organizations had participated with 240 Delegates

There were 34 Theme Papers, 117 Best Suggestor Case Studies and around 300 entries for Slogan / Poster Contests.

We feel the Convention was successful. There was lot of enthusiasm amongst 240 plus delegates. They had got an opportunity to present their best work and also got national level recognition. Dear Mr. Avachat and INSSAN Team,

My heartiest congratulation to entire team of INSSAN Western Chapter for successfully conducting National Convention on suggestion.

It was my privilege to be part of this event.

It was good to see the participation level from operators to the senior managers in Suggestion/Kaizen by different participating organization.

Another positive shift in the topic of suggestion was that many participants presented energy and environmental related suggestions.

Wish all the very best to INSSAN in its endeavor to crate excellence in the manufacturing industry.

Feed Back of The 26 National Convention Held on 8th & 9th January 2016

Ways to Generate Brilliant IdeasMan is natural problem solver. The conditions in which he fined himself are rarely as comfortable or as rewarding as he would like to be. Therefore his mind is constantly engage on change & improvement. With very little thought, he is able to introduce quite satisfactory changes to suit his own convenience. What separates the average person from Edison, Picasso Shakespeare or Einstein is not creative capacity but the ability to tap that capacity by encouraging creative impulses and acting upon them.

Here you will find ten ways to get brilliant ideas. I have used in my organisation for idea generation. They have worked for me very well. I now share them with you. I trust they will assist you in your endeavors as they have done with mine.

1) DEFINE THE PROBLEM

Generate ideas to solve business problems we all need a starting point. It is imperative that you establish where you are before looking to progress. In other words study the map that will take you to solution. The first step of problem solving is understands the problem.

2) CAPTURE THE FLEETIG:

A good idea is like rabbit. It runs by so fast that sometimes you see only its ears or tail. To capture it, you must be ready. Creative people are always poised, and that may be only difference between us and them. Many scientists & inventors say “Whatever I am doing, I lay it aside and attend to the arriving idea.” They normally keep pen, pencil, and note book handy, even beside their bed. Now, many enter ideas into a pocket computer

I always have a notepad with me. I am now at the point where I can't live without one of the simplest devices known to man, which has probably been around almost since the days of the "Cave Man". A pen with a pocket size pad is brilliant as you can capture every idea that comes to you. It's absolutely useless to say "I'll write it down later" as the chances are very slim that

you will in fact do that at all. Not every idea will have value, of course. The point is to capture first and evaluate later.

3) BRAINSTORMING

Brainstorming is a technique for getting the greatest possible number of ideas. This is a brainchild of Alex Osborn an advertisement executive.

Brainstorming in the simplest term is a group of people using their thinking power to create ideas. It is always more productive than each person thinking alone. In short we can say that it is spontaneous discussion in search of ideas. When it is used by individual it is known as Brain writing. The principles of idea generations are same.

Concentrate solely on idea generation. Place a time limit on the group and choose the location and the time well so that they are conducive to performance. Make sure that everybody is at their peak and has been instructed to "Think Big". I have been able to move mountains after a very healthy brainstorming session.

4) FOCUS ENTIRELY ON WHAT YOU WANT

To give your ideas the best chance to sprout for your business solutions you are going to need to switch off to outside influences. Tolerate nothing! Eradicate the distractions, the daily frustrations and predictable dramas of your life once and for all! Don't just fix the problem; re-design your routine so the predictable irritations can't ever bother you again!

5) HAVE A GENUINE INTEREST IN WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO

Do you remember your schooling days when you participated in sports or particular class subjects that you absolutely disinterested, they were compulsory? Do you remember how good you were at these activities? Probably it doesn't present itself as a good memory. But it's probably safe to say that you didn't perform well.

It's very difficult to perform magnificently at something you're not overly fond of. If you have a interest in what you're trying to do, the likelihood of success is multiplied substantially. Therefore have a genuine interest in what you what you are trying to do

6) LOOK AT PARALLEL PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

Relate your current problem to one that you had in the past and check for parallels between the two. The way(s) earlier problems were solved can assist you greatly in generating ideas to solve subsequent situations that present themselves.

Think laterally, think vertically, and think logically. The best ideas will always come from groups working for the common goal. Give your group as much opportunity to be creative by listening twice as much as speaking. Do this as informally as possible and get past situations into the open. You can then draw on the past successes and take them a step further with the challenge of today.

7) LOOK AT EACH TASK AS A CHALLENGE

It's true that if you look at a problem simply as a "problem" then that is exactly how many will look at it. Sure it is a problem and therefore, needs a solution. However, this thought should be in the forefront of the mind when looking to turn this "problem" into an "asset". The word, "problem" tends to sum up negative thoughts within us. It is these negative thoughts that can almost act as a barrier to its resolution. Now, if we turn the coin over and look at it from the other side, it is simply by this method that we have more positive thoughts within our mind and are more likely to enjoy ourselves along the way presented with an interesting challenge as opposed to a potentially difficult problem. Just look at the goal. How happy will you be when you arrive at ideas to solve the problem?

8) TURN THE CHALLENGE/PROBLEM INTO A CATCHY EXPRESSION

Okay we have looked at using past example and creating parallels to "answer our challenge". One step further is to present the challenge as a catchphrase.

Using our same example:

'Europe For The Summer ''Dream Trip Of A Lifetime'' The European Cultural Experience' 'Tomorrow travel at 250 kmh legally' etc

Doing this will give everyone an idea of the benefits associated with the attainment of the problem at hand. It puts them in the situation that they are already there.

It's so much easier to get there with a popular vision on the mind. What expression would you suggest?

9) DAYDREAM!!! LET YOUR CEATIVE SUB-CONSCIOUS WORK FOR YOU!!!

It's no strange coincidence that during the time you drive along staring out the window, sleep in your bed, undertake your daily duties at work or anything for that

matter. Your sub-conscious continues to work for you (even though you may not always be fully aware of this).

How often have you been doing something totally unrelated and then suddenly an idea snaps into your mind? - Often? / Sometimes? /or Never? In any case after you have put

considerable time into solving your problem you will find your inner mind will work for you. Sometimes if you try too hard to solve something you end up with nothing short of major frustration.

So, as the expression goes "chill out", have a break and sleep on it. You may be surprised at how successful switching off can be.

10) ALTER YOUR ROUTINE REGULARLY

Have you ever noticed how easily we accumulate habits? Many habits can actually stifle your creativity. If you are someone who: 'travels the same route each day, work at the same desk and task day in day out' 'mix with the same people regularly' 'take your annual holidays to the same destination each year'

To continue generating healthy ideas to better our work, our surroundings, our family etc we must continually be looking for "newness". Familiarity is very good in that it makes us feel very secure. It is this very security that closes our mind to change and restricts our creative abilities.

Take the bus or the train across town or maybe even just a different route from time to time, broaden your job responsibilities, take on another sport or leisure activity and meet some different people with a different outlook.

You will be quietly surprised at how much positive energy you will get from doing things as small as that outlined above.

11) DAYDEAM:

I read, Spanish painter Salvador Dali tapped his creative potential by lying on the sofa, holding a spoon. Just as he drifted off to sleep, Dali would drop

the spoon onto a plate on floor. The sound startled him awake, and he would immediately sketch the images he had envisioned in that fertile world of semi sleep. We all know the story of Archimedes. Eureka!! Eureka!!

Everybody experiences this strange transitional state, and everyone can take advantage of it. Just allow yourself to daydream. Bed, bath and anywhere else you can be with your thoughts undisturbed, you will find that ideas bubble to the surface almost unbidden.

12) EXPAND YOUR WORLD

Many breakthroughs in science, engineering, medicine and the arts blend the ideas from different fields. For enhancing your creativity, learn something new. Read a book on the subject you know little about. Change your daily news paper. The new will interconnect you with the old in novel and potentially fascinating ways. Seek challenges. Put new creasy items on your table. The more diverse the stimulation we receive, the more rapidly the mind spins out new ideas.

They will be your ideas. Capture them, preserve them, and apply them.

Stephen ShapiroInnovation Instigator

I am a fan of mysteries. I think they can train the brain to be a better innovator.

I’m currently re-reading the complete works of Sherlock Holmes. In “A Study in Scarlet,” Holmes provides some great perspectives that everyone should consider.

After Holmes made some amazing deductions about Watson’s current state of affairs, Watson was shocked. When Holmes explained his thought process, Watson expressed disbelief.

Watson: When I hear you give your reasons, the thing always appears to me to be so ridiculously simple that I could easily do it myself, though at each successive instance of your reasoning I am baffled until you explain your process. And yet I believe that my eyes are as good as yours.

Holmes: Quite so. You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear. For example, you have frequently seen the steps which lead up from the hall to this room.

Watson: Frequently.

Holmes: How often?

Watson: Well, some hundreds of times.

Holmes: Then how many are there?

Watson: How many? I don’t know.

Holmes: Quite so! You have not observed. And yet you have seen. That is just my point. Now, I know that there are seventeen steps, because I have both seen and observed.

As innovators, we need to do a better job of observing, not just seeing. We need to study what is really going on in the

Innovate Like Sherlock Holmesmarket, with our customers. Unfortunately too often we just see without insight.

This will lead to a predicament that is described later in the story. Holmes is presented with a challenge, and Watson immediately wants to deduce the solution.

Watson: This is indeed a mystery. What do you imagine that it means?

Holmes: I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.

This is brilliant! It describes a common mistake of innovators. We often get too attached to our ideas, and therefore ignore evidence that goes against our beliefs. This is why so many innovations fail.

Too often we twist the facts to suit our theories.

The reason is that as human beings we are subject to confirmation bias; the brain’s processing mechanism by which it finds evidence to support its belief structure. Whatever you believe, you will find evidence to support it, and you will subconsciously ignore anything that refutes it. That’s why we can have such powerful beliefs in spite of evidence to the contrary.

We get too attached to our ideas, and therefore we introduce innovations that are destined to fall flat.

Or as Scoot Cook from Intuit so eloquently said, “For every one of our failures, we had spreadsheets that looked awesome.”

During your innovation efforts, think like Sherlock Holmes. Be sure to truly observe what is going on in the world around you. Use this to gather the necessary data. And, critically, avoid twisting your facts to support your beliefs.

One very dark night I was walking down the street. Under a street lamp there was a drunk guy who was on his hands and knees looking for something. I stopped and asked what he was doing.

He slurred his words and said, “I lost my keys and am looking for them.”

I asked him, “Where did you last have them?”

He replied, “Somewhere down the street. But I’m looking here because this is the only place with light!”

Of course that is an old (and bad) joke. But it makes a powerful point.

Too often we spend our time solving problems that are under an existing light, rather than working on the opportunities that will “create” light.

It is easier to:

• solve problems in your area of expertise. This is known as the “if you have a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail” syndrome.

Your Innovation Efforts are Focused on the Wrong Opportunities• develop ideas that are based on your past experiences.

Unfortunately this means your future will become an extrapolation of the past.

• address issues told to you by your current customers. Of course this means you may not be addressing latent/unarticulated needs or needs of not-yet-to-be customers.

For decades, Sears was the dominant player in the retail industry. And they were one of the first companies to bring the internet to the masses with their Prodigy service, which they founded (with IBM and some other companies) in 1984. As an aside, at that time they were about 10 times the size of Walmart. Ironically, though, they were one of the last players to move from the physical catalogue to online shopping. Their past success with the print catalogue became the “light” from the past that drove their future decisions.

Of course there are hundreds of other similar examples of where blind spots (the dark) were
