Volume 1 Issue 2

March 2007

WelcomeSun Life Financial is committed to

helping you achieve financial well-being

in retirement. With helpful and reliable

information, you can continue on a

clear path toward your goals. This issue

of Sun Connection discusses the

prospect of Social Security reform and

the reason behind it.

Social Security reform is President Bush’s top domestic legislative priority. With asystem that many say is in need of repair and opposition to reform in the mannerproposed, there is lively debate on the subject. What does it mean exactly? Whodoes it affect? And why is it a hot topic? We’ve gone directly to Washington tobring you the details.

Sound bites on Reform:• How Social Security Works Now: What you pay – or paid – into Social

Security through your payroll taxes does not fund your retirement, but ratherpays retirement benefits to current retirees.

• The Problem: The first wave of “baby boomers” will soon enter into retirement. At 76 million strong, this generation has more people in it than subsequentgenerations. This means that when this group retires, there will be fewer workersavailable to support them. As a result, the system will not work at some point, because the payments due retirees may exceed the taxes collected from workers.

Number of Workers for One Retiree

UnderstandingSocial Security Reform

Source data: www.ssa.gov, 2004 OASDI Trustees Report

People are living longer; the first baby boomers are five years from retirement, andtoday’s birth rate is low. The result is that the worker-to-beneficiary ratio has fallenfrom 16-to-1 in 1950 to 3.3-to-1 today. Within 40 years it will be 2-to-1. At this ratiothere may not be enough workers to pay scheduled benefits at current tax rates.
