Hi Everybody,

Let me start by thanking Butch for his hard work and effort over the past years as Chapter Director, I just hope that I’ll be able to come close to doing the job that he’s done over the years. And thanks of course to those other members whose efforts made belonging to Chapter “C” the great ex-perience that is – Dave & Gloria Pumphrey for their contribu-tion of both time and the use of their home for the various Chapter functions, Dave Bohrer who handled both Ride Co-ordinator and Chapter Educator duties, Mike Nutter who was the Charity Ride Coordinator, Virginia Bohrer, Carole Michaelson and Barb Jackson who handled the Phone Tree duties, Cathi Anderson who was the Chapter MEC, Ed Zogg for his contributions as Newsletter Editor, Rick Baker for his fine work on the Chapter web site and, lastly, all the other members who pitched in at the various gatherings and events and helped make this past year a success.

With mixed feelings, many chapter members attended a farewell dinner for Cathi and Lloyd Anderson to thank them for their past contributions to the chapter and wish them both all the best as they move to warmer climes in Florida. I un-derstand that they are getting settled in and enjoying the warmer weather. We will miss them both and wish them all the best in the future.

Although it’s still a little cold to be doing too much riding at

the moment, we can still look forward to the upcoming riding

season and take the opportunity to plan the ride schedule for

I e-mailed a preliminary Ride Schedule to the members, and asked for input for locations for the Ice Cream and Dinner Rides for the year, as well as suggestions for chapter rides. Once your input has been received, I will summarize all the suggestions and then plan a meeting to put together a sched-ule for the year. So, if you have a favorite place to eat or a ride that you would like to take, please let us know and we’ll try to work it into the schedule. There was a nice turnout for the Ice Cream Ride last week, held at Hersheys in Arundel Mills Mall – there were some positive comments on this location as there is also a good selection of food available for those who might look for something a little more substantial than ice cream.

We have been notified that Chapter “H”’s Spaghetti Bingo on February 18

th is sold out and no further registrations, either by

mail or at the door, can be taken. If you missed out this year, please remember to register early next year as the number of attendees is limited by the local Fire Marshal. It’s not too late though to plan for Chapter “A”’s Bowl-A-Thon on March 18

always a fun event.

As the whole idea of the GWRRA Chapter is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for the members, we appreciate any and all input from the members – please let us know what you, as a chapter member, would like to do for the coming year as that’s what it’s all about.

Establishing a Maintenance Baseline

I am a firm believer in good maintenance records for vehicles. If you purchase a pre-owned (used) Gold Wing motorcycle and do not get previous maintenance records, you should establish a maintenance (mileage/time) baseline.

I would recommend the following:

1. Change the engine oil and filter. (Reference owner’s manual for specifications)

2. Change the clutch and brake fluid. (Use DOT 4 brake fluid for both)

3. Check the brake pads, if relatively worn replace them.

4. Change the engine air filter.

5. Change the radiator coolant. (Use a “silicate free” coolant, I use the Honda coolant)

6. Change the final drive gear oil. (Use an 80-wt gear oil)

7. Change the spark plugs. (Use the Honda NGK spark plugs)

8. Change the sub air filter. (Does not apply to the GL1800)

9. Change the front fork fluid. (Use Pro-Honda Suspension Fluid SS-8 or equivalent)

10. If the bike has 80,000 miles or more on the odometer, lube the drive shaft splines.

(Use Honda Moly 60 lube)

11. If the bike has 100,000 miles or more on the odometer, inspect the timing belts,

change if needed. (Does not apply to the GL1800)

12. Check the drive shaft (universal joint) rubber boot it may be torn/ripped. Replace if

needed. The 1997 – 2000 Gold Wing’s had issues with torn/ripped boots (even at

relatively low mileage).

13. Check the right rear air shock rubber boot it may be torn/ripped. Replace if needed.

And above all check those tires. Look for cracks, cuts, bumps, uneven wear (cupping),

nails, low tread depth (2/32 inch). Check the manufacture date code on the tires. Example: A code of (1008) would mean the tires were manufactured in the 10th week of 2008 (about the 1st week of March). If any of this exists or the tires are more than seven years old replace them. Yeah, some riders don’t ride very many miles per year.

Once you have established a maintenance mileage/time baseline, reference the maintenance schedule in the owners and/or service manuals for future maintenance.

Slick Leaves and Target-Fixation

Two Tips In One

Penned by: A contributor to the AMA Magazine.

I have two pieces of advise, both based on the same experience. My brothers and I were headed for a fall foliage ride in Arkansas, and I cautioned one rider to be careful of leaf-covered turns, as they could be slick. Well, quite the bummer, he did a slide on one curve and grinded off his leather chaps and some knuckles (he forgot to wear some great protective gloves). Luckily, he wasn’t hurt so bad they couldn’t finish the trip, and the cycle, a Yamaha Virago 600, was OK as well.

So the first advise is simple: Watch for slick leaves.

The second tip involves “target fixation.” After their return, the rider who crashed said it was my fault for putting the image of losing it on a leaf-covered curve. He mentioned “target fixation,” which I had not heard of, but began to research on the Internet. I quickly learned another tip.

It seems that many riders crash because when they see an obstacle in the road, they brace to hit it. Instead, you should mentally pick a path around the obstacle, and you likely will succeed. Many riders are guilty of target-fixation. Do a little test using the mental trick. Go out and try dodging road kill, manhole covers and other objects in the road. You will find the mental trick really works!

Yes, old dogs can definitely learn new tricks.

Starting System Troubleshooting for the GL1500 (Part Two)

If your bike is “totally dead” when you press the “starter/reverse switch” and you have performed all the checks listed in part one. Do the following checks:

1. Turn on the ignition and press the starter switch. At the same time, use a screwdriver, pair of pliers etc. and short across the two large termi-nals on the starter relay switch B. This relay is located behind the right front side panel and di-rectly behind the foot brake pedal. It will have a red and blue rubber cover over the terminals.

Note: On the 1988 – 1989 years, the starter re-lay switch B is located on the left side of the bat-tery.

If the starter runs, you have a bad starter relay switch B.

If the starter does not run, you have one of the following conditions:

2. A bad starter relay switch A. (See item # 7 in part one)

3. A bad reverse lever switch. (See item # 1 in part one)

4. A bad starter/reverse switch.

5. A bad starter. (Possible but doubtful)

I would do the following tests:

6. Check for 12 volts input to the starter relay switch B.

If you do not have 12 volts input you have one of the following:

7. A bad starter relay switch A.

8. A bad reverse lever switch. (See item # 1 in part one)

9. A bad starter/reverse switch.

10. Short across the yellow/red wire and the black/light green wire on the starter/reverse switch. If the bike starts, you have a bad starter/reverse switch. Inspect, clean, repair or replace as needed!

If the bike does not start, you have one of the following:

11. A bad starter relay switch A.

12. A bad reverse lever switch. (See item # 1 in part one)

13. Check for continuity across the contacts of the reverse lever switch.

If you have continuity, the switch is good. No continuity, the switch is bad. Replace it!

If the reverse lever switch is good, the starter relay switch A is bad. Replace it!

Of course there is always a possibility of a bad starter, but that is a very remote possibility on the GL1500 Gold Wing’s.
