Do you know what Re-

public Day is?

A Republic is a country

that runs basis its own

rule book. India be-

came a republic on

26th January 1950. It is

on this day, 68 years ago, when our rule book was released.

This is a very important day, as India

started truly managing itself, on this

day. The National flag is hoisted by the

president in New Delhi, on every Re-

public Day. Awards are given to chil-

dren and soldiers.

The bravery awards are always given to 26 children, on Republic Day. This year, awards

on Sports, Art, Culture etc. were given too. A total of 26 awards were given on 22nd Jan-

uary, in a special ceremony.

The 26 winners were selected from 900 children. The winners were selected by a team of

experts.

Here are some of the winners. They were part of the parade on 26th January.

Eiha Dixit, a 6 year old, was the youngest winner. She won the award for planting 500

plants, alone. Kartik Goyal and Adrika Goyal, won the bravery award. They gave food,

water, medicine and first aid to the passengers of a train that had been looted.

Esow, from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, won the award in the sports category.

Arunima Sen, a student of Class XII, in Bangalore, bagged the award for Science.

Children, you have a year to do something great, and then apply for the awards. It is time

to start NOW.

Children, you must have visited

many fairs like Diwali fest and

Christmas fest. Do you know the

biggest fair in the world? It is

called the Kumbh Mela. ‘Kumbh’

means pot and ‘Mela’ means fair.

It is an important part of our cul-

ture.

In this fair, lots and lots of people

take bath in the holy river.

There is a story behind this. One day, gods and demons

had a fight. They fought over a pot of nectar. If they drank

it, they would live forever. While they were fighting, 4

drops of nectar fell in 4 places.

Those places are the present-day places where the

Kumbh Mela takes place. This is why the Kumbh mela happens in one

of these 4 places, everytime:

• Ganga river in Haridwar

• Shipra river in Ujjain

• Godavari river in Nasik

• The union of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saras-

wati in Prayagraj.

This time the Kumbh Mela is at Prayagraj.

Allahabad is now called Prayagraj. Many

people attend the Kumbh Mela. So, proper

drinking water is being given. Clean toilets

are built. Many tents are put up for people

to stay.

Indian culture is colourful. We should try to attend Kumbh Mela.

Dear kids, do you like helping people?

Reading out to the blind, helping with

crossing the road, and babysitting chil-

dren? Scientist Ankita Gulati, is one such

person. She has developed a device

called Touch Vision.

Touch vision helps the blind see pictures.

Wonder how, when they need to read with the help of dots and punctures.

Ankita is a computer science graduate. The idea of developing this device came

to her mind while she was working on a project. She visited a school while

working on it. She found the children were being taught Science without pictures

and diagrams in it.

During her research, she found that subjects like Science, Technology, Engi-

neering, and Mathematics were almost out of reach for blind students. She says

that such students are not encouraged to study Mathematics and Science beyond

class 8. A solution needed to be found, lest it became too late. How could sci-

ence and Math be taught without pictures and diagrams. A way had to be sought,

as children were not able to understand the subjects with just words and sounds.

This situation motivated her to develop

something that could be helpful to such

students. She created a device that de-

scribes diagrams and pictures while the

students tried to read them by touching

the dots and the dents. Not surprisingly

so, she received the National Award for

this brilliant idea. Who knows there will

now be a scientist, who may not see but

will be an encyclopedia.

How is the Josh? High Sir!

You would have heard this

phrase, if you are a defence

officer’s child, or have

watched URI. The movie is

one of the better shot de-

fence films. Apart from

the ’josh’, what people took

to, was the technology used

in the film. Many wondered

if the military actually uses

such technology. While

there is no way the military will comment on the use of the technology (for se-

curity reasons), there is a fair chance that they possess similar technology.

• A Drone that was Shaped like an Eagle. The Drone Was Called Garuda, in

the Movie:

It is possible that the military possesses a drone. However it may not be

as efficient as the one shown in the movie. In the movie, the drone looked

like a bird. It had night vision, and could hover. It could also take off and

land on any surface. While the military may be using drones, they may not

look like a bird. They may also not be so technically advanced. The name

Garuda, comes from one of the avatars of Lord Vishnu. The avatar had a

mix of eagle and human features.

• Spy Satellites:

Designated satellites are certainly used to spy and track terrorist activi-

ties. Once an approximate location is identified, the satellites zoom into

the area and track any activity that may be occurring there.

• Night Vision Glasses:

The night vision glasses used in the film are definitely used by the special

forces and those who do night patrols in sensitive areas.
