Our team had the wonderful opportunity to work with The Model Studio recently. The Model Studio machined our uprights and returned some beautiful parts to us ahead of schedule. The staff at The Model Studio was more than accommodating, and took the time to explain our machining options based on the design of our parts. The Model Studio’s facilities in San Jose are representative of their work: clean and efficient. They have the capabilities to machine parts out of many types of materials, including plastics and metals. There is also a paint shop on site so they can provide their clients with a completely finished product. Our FSAE team plans on bringing some parts to The Model Studio for bead blasting to improve the finish and appearance.

Our Formula SAE team will be making
their first big splash at the 2009 Silicon Valley International Auto Show. The show will be held at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center and will be displaying production and concept vehicles for today and tomorrow.
After months of teamwork, research,
design, and fabrication, we are ready to show off some of our accomplishments. We will be displaying our rolling chassis along with many of our fabricated components.
Our team members will be on site
answering questions about our vehicle and about the Formula SAE competition. Our display will be located at the main entrance with featured motorsports leaders like the Sports Car Club of America, and Kleen Speed. We look forward to seeing you there.
Here’s the schedule: Thursday 10 am – 10 pm Friday 10 am – 10 pm Saturday 10 am – 10 pm Sunday 10 am – 7 pm Please visit: www.motortrendautoshows.com

Haven Faith Community is a new sponsor to the Formula SAE team at SJSU. Their organization has a deep concern for the San Jose community that they are part of, and the Formula SAE team looks forward to growing this partnership and helping Haven. Since SJSU is a strong and established part of the community here in San Jose, it is only natural for our Formula team to join forces and provide students with the opportunities to become leaders. Haven Faith Community is a Christian church based in San Jose and focuses on home groups meeting throughout the Silicon Valley. The members of this organization have a desire to make a difference in their surrounding community, and often use fresh and unconventional means to touch lives. To accomplish this, Haven is working together with local organizations to help those in need. Haven welcomes everybody to attend their Bible Studies and Sunday services. Please visit: www.ihaven.org
Our Suspension team just completed manufacturing the
A arms and are excited about bolting them onto the
chassis. The Adam Hill Company has been very
generous in the form of significant discounts on all
Aurora spherical bearings needed for the A arms,
pushrods, and toe links.
Our team has also received the machined uprights from
The Model Studio last week, and we are very happy with
how they turned out. Timken has wheel bearings on the
way and the rotor clip company has provided several free
samples of their product for us to use on the vehicle. Our
Wilwood brake calipers also arrived in the mail and fit
beautifully on the uprights. We plan on assembling the
wheel packages shortly and then test-fitting them on the
car. The pushrods and bell crank pivots are next on our
list for manufacturing. We are extremely excited about
getting our suspension system built and look forward to
learning more about the system we have designed
through testing. Thanks again to Sim’s Metal for the
generous materials donations.

Spartan Racing visits Telo Stewart and Michael
Doyle at World Speed Motorsports. World Speed
Motorsports is a highly successful Formula Mazda
team that is based out of Infineon Raceway.
A few of our team members met with the President
of WSM, Telo Stewart, and Chief Engineer Michael
Doyle to tour their facility and to gain an overview of
their series and cars. Stewart explained to us the finer
points of the Formula Pro Mazda cars from front wing
to rear wing. Stewart also explained the spec regulations
and scrutiny that has kept the series competitive and
fairly cost effective.
On our tour of the facility, we were able to observe a
dynamometer run and an alignment job. Our team
discussed with WSM many design aspects behind the
Pro Mazda cars which gave us some insight to the
design of our project.
In addition to our tour, Stewart introduced us to some of
his team members. Stewart explained that some of the
success of WSM comes from the team working well
together.
SJSU SAE Diversity Our SAEI student chapter and FSAE team have given their very first “Certificate of Appreciation” awards to the Central Shop and Craig Stauffer of the College of Engineering.
With their help, our team was able to get expert advice on the manufacturability of certain designs. They have also built a few of our more complicated components such as the top hats, brake rotors, and differential mounting brackets. Our team can’t thank them enough.
Spartan Racing and
World Speed Motorsports
WSM has generously offered Spartan Racing the use
of some of their equipment. Spartan Racing would
like to return their generosity by aiding WSM with
Matlab and SolidWorks design and calculations. Our
team is excited to work with World Speed
Motorsports.

During those long nights perfecting designs and machining in the shop, our team needs sustenance to keep going. The Paris Baguette bakery in Santa Clara has been very gracious to our team, and their pastries help us break through those hunger blocks that come up all too often. Those delicious morsels of egg and flour hit the spot, and the Formula SAE team at SJSU appreciates the support from Paris Baguette.
Paris Baguette is a high-end bakery that creates all types of delectable desserts and baked goods. From their chestnut bread to the chocolate twists to the mousse cakes, they have foods for all palates. The expert bakers at Paris Baguette create fresh pastries each morning, and they are constantly expanding their variety. From a simple hot sandwich to an extravagant birthday cake, Paris Baguette aims to please.

Congratulations to our SAEI “BE U.NITED” idea and our Formula SAE team for winning first place during the Neat Ideas Fair.
During the fair, our members spoke to many students about how we can unite the different colleges on campus. We also had the opportunity to speak with the Associate Dean as well as many professors from the College of Business. They were so impressed by the idea, that we received the “People’s Choice Award” (shown on the left).
