Inauguration Week

Next Friday, January 20th, our nation turns a page in its history and opens a new chapter, installing our 45th President of the United States. This new administration carries on the desires of the first pilgrims and forefathers in establishing a civil government based on religious free-dom, God’s law and the common good. We are reminded of the words of our Declaration of Independence, that we recognize “that all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights: Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Our President-elect will continue a long-held tradition of visiting a church, (the Washington National Cathedral), on the day following the Inauguration. Many religious leaders and faith-filled citizens will look to God in prayer. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops offers these Inauguration prayers: God of power and might, wisdom and justice:

We pray for our new President, Donald Trump, to have before him at all times the charge to protect and defend the rights of all citizens, especially the weak and most vulnerable among us. For all civic authorities, entrusted with care for the common good, to act with loving care in all they do.

For our nation, to continue to promote liberty and freedom, justice and peace for all. For the people of the United States, to engage in a spirit of cooperation, tranquility, and respect for one another and for all human life as good stewards of the gifts God has given us.

For the Church and its leaders, to serve as beacons of the light of Christ in a world in the shadows of fear, violence, poverty and death.

Book: Rediscover Jesus

Chapter 2: Getting to know Jesus: How well do you know Je-sus ? Who is Jesus? He’s an invitation. Jesus wants to have a deep, dynamic, personal relationship with you. GOD THE FATHER WANTS US to know his Son. To find out more, read Rediscover Jesus. Kelly, Matthew. Rediscover Jesus: An Invi-tation. United States: Beacon, 2015. Print.

Chapter 3: An Invitation: More books have been written about Jesus than about any other person or subject in history. There is a wonderful joy in discovering someone for the first time. To find out more. Read Rediscover Jesus.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

What identifies us as individuals and tells people who we are? This simple question can be answered in a variety of ways. Some might say that we are identified by our names. Our names tell people something about our ancestry and give others something which to call us. Others might say that we are identified by our physical features or by identifying marks. Our scars come with stories; our smile gives others a hint as to who we are. Still others might say that we are identified by our actions. What we do and say are impor-tant and give people insight into who we truly are. In today’s Gospel by John, we see all these types of iden-tification.

John the Baptist refers to Jesus by two names of which we are familiar: the “Lamb of God” and the “Son of God.” By using these titles, John the Baptist identifies Jesus' ultimate purpose: to redeem humanity. Much like our names, it gives us something by which to identify Jesus and tell us about who He is in relation to us. Also, in John's testimony he says that he saw the Spirit descend upon Jesus. By this sign or “physical fea-ture,” John the Baptist was able to identify that Jesus was the One who was to come after him. Lastly, John the Baptist, who himself is not referred to by name in this Gospel, is identified through his actions as he bap-tizes others by water. Through this action, he distinguishes himself from the Lord as Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit. John also puts his practice of baptism in the context of Jesus' ministry. The purpose of John's baptism was to make Jesus known to Israel.

John the Baptist's sense of purpose is clearly identified in this reading: he baptized others in order to prepare for and make known the ministry of the One who was to follow. When John the Baptist recognizes Jesus as the One who was to follow, he does not try to keep the attention on himself, but rather he pointed the way to Jesus. Similarly, we are to identify ourselves as disciples of Jesus by living our lives in such a way that our deeds and our words point to Jesus’ influence in our lives.

As parents and educators, it is imperative that we impart this lesson to our children and students. At Queen of Apostles School, we identify ourselves through our mission and our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs). These words and symbols represent who we are as a school community and set guidelines for our school community and our actions. The first SLE is that our students are to be Caring Christians. While community service, kindness to others, and humility are certainly key parts of this lesson, we must also re-mind them never to be ashamed for their faith. A good deed is its own reward, but our good deeds may also inspire others to reflect on their own relationship – or lack thereof – with Jesus. Our next SLE is Active Learner. Students should not only take responsibility for their learning but take pride in their education by sharing it with others through reading, writing, and speaking. Next is Self-Confident and Responsible Indi-vidual; through this SLE students are reminded that part of their identity should be the part that shows perse-verance and Never Gives Up. Lastly, students are reminded to honor and respect themselves in mind, body, and spirit, in Healthy Individuals.

It is our hope that when those in the Queen of Apostles community are asked, “Who are you?” they will re-member the SLEs.

Many Blessings,

Elizabeth Trela

PEACEMAKERS We Are All Called to be Peacemakers

In the coming year we are all called to be peacemakers. As a commu-nity of joy and hope we are one in Christ. We need to rely on Christ’s love for us and in the love expressed by our spiritual mentors:

Pope Francis Peace is a precious gift which must be promoted and protected . . . never has violence brought peace in its wake. Peace in our homes, our families, our schools and our com-munities. Peace for those faces which have known nothing but pain.

Bishop McGrath We should be filled with boundless love for God and our neighbor.

Mother Teresa Spread love everywhere you go. First of all in your own house . . . Let no one ever come to you without leav-ing better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kind-ness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes and kindness in your smile.

Pope John XXIII The joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the people of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ.

Vatican II documents – preamble written by Pope John XXIII

A Prayer for our Church God, our Heavenly Father, we humbly ask you to make the doors of our Church wide enough to receive all who need human love and fel-lowship, and a Father’s care; narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and un-charitableness. Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling block to children, or to weak or straying feet; but rugged and strong enough to turn back the tempter’s power.

O, Heavenly Father, make the doors of our Church a gateway to your Eternal Kingdom. Bless every member and worker in our Church. May all that we do be done to Your honor and for Your glory, and to the up-building of your parish, as an extension of Your kingdom.

Please send to us those whom You would have be a part of Your work here at our church, and may we all continue to be Yours, forever; daily increasing in Your Holy Spirit of love and in service to others. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Savior. Amen.
