Dear Mr. Ray:

Thank you for your letter of 3 August 1994 1 have enclosed all

the background material 1 have been able to accumulate so far on

Christ, and on Hemming's claim to have been in touch with your

brother. 1 have also enclosed several pictures of Hemming which 1

hope you will display to your brother and see if he ever met the dude.

Hemming could be bullshiting and may not have been in on the King

assassination. 1know he was the dude that Oswalded his old Marine

buddy into taking the fall for the Dealey Plaza hit. He was the one who

gave up Christ as the third tramp, one night in his private detective

office in Little Havana . Hemming stated: Kennedy turned the country

over to the niggers. Aside from all the Cuban bullshit, he deserved it

for that.

As far as Christ being Raoul - unlikely. Christ was 6 and weighed

about 190 in 1959. You describe Raoul as 5'8 , 140 pounds. Christ was

employed by the CIA in 1967. He would have had to have taken an· .

awful lot of time off to hang out with you in Montreal. He didn't have

a Spanish accent and 1 doubt if he could have faked one for a

Page 4: James Earl Ray Correspondence

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/james-earl-ray-correspondence 4/37

prolonged period of time. A dude like Christ only appears on the scene

for a short period of time, does his work, then disappears. That sketch

looks like the tramp. It also looks something like you - but more like

the tramp.

What makes me think you were framed is your past record. All of

this low level criminal activity does not add up to someone who would

be ideologically motivated to kill King. Also Hemming's statements

when he was facing time for federal narcotics conspiracy charges that

he had a special knowledge of the King assassination. Maybe there was

a dude named Raoul. He didn t fire any shots. He just set you up.

Maybe he was Cuban, like Raoul castro? You say he worked out of

Miami and New Orleans. These are centers of Cuban exile activity. Did

he give you any indication he was Cuban? Did you ever ask him what

the arms were going to be used for? Any talk of an assassination plot?

Let me tell you something, Mr. Ray When Hemming and his people

frame someone, they know they were framed, but they don t really

know where it was coming from. Hemming was moving in a lot of

rightwing circles. was your brother really J:B stoner's bodyguard? Was

he connected with the NSRP? Did he have any contact with the

International Anti-Communist Brigade? INTERPEN? The Freedom

Fighters? Cubans? Mercinaries?.Maybe you did this on behalf of the NSRP and Raoul was your

Page 5: James Earl Ray Correspondence

8/13/2019 James Earl Ray Correspondence

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/james-earl-ray-correspondence 5/37

brother? Then why mention him at all? The question is if you were set

up, how did Hemming come across you? In 1978 Hemming told me he

met your brother He hasn t made reference to it during a long series

of conversations had with him recently. The main thing is to establish

a Hemming/Anderson/Jerry Ray connection.

As for Fensterwald, that jackel s presence indicates some sort of CIA

interest in this whole affair. Hemming says someone moved in next to

him El Monte, California before the King thing and offers him a

contract on King. Hemming infiltrated the Black Panthers in California.

With my new knowledge of who Christ is am going to look at my

MLK file and see if can resolve this stuff about the tramps and the

MLK killing once and for all. Maybe did send you a photo of Hemming

once before, or ask you about it. I m not sure.

I have your recent l e t t e r , the enc losed papers , and Thank you

fo r the book . I didn ' t have a copy of your o r i g i n a l book, r a t h e r

a loca l inves t iga to r helping me bought it and sene me some o f the

pages xeroxed .

F i r s t , re Fensterwald .When

he f i r s t s t a r t e d rep re sen t ingme

he appeared very d i l i ge n t ; however , a f t e r he ob ta i ned the

eviden t i a r y hearmng in the Memphis f edera l cour t he appeared

to become very defens ive in prosecu t ing the mat te r . He wouldn t

permit h is as soc ia te Jim Lesar to ask witnesses c e r t a i n

ques t ions . We had a very s t rong case fo r a t r i a l , as I can see

now from hinds igh t . In one i ns t ance dur ing discovecyhe Lesar

d i d n t ask Percy Foreman the subscr ibers to a re lephone no . in

New Orleans connected with t he MLK case , even though Foreman

s t a t e d under oath he had found the name of the subsc r ibe r • • . I

wasn ' t presen t fo r t he Foreman depos i t ion .Then to Fens te rwald fa i l e J

to c i t e a 1969 sup. c t . case in h i s 6th c i r c u i t cour t appeal

t ha t would have made it extermely d i f f i c u l t for the cour t not to

r ever se the d i s t r i c t cour t dec i s ion . Fur the r , a f t e r the ev iden t -

i a ry hear ing in Memphis , Fensterwald ask me to l e t Lesar f i l e

the br i e f s to the 6th c i r c u i t and argue them a t the hear ing .

At t ha t tmme Lesa r was young and was not a c r . a t to rney .

The next t ime I saw Fensterwald was 15 years l a t e r (1990) , I

t i n ~ in the Brushy Mountain pr i son . He showed me a pic . along

with some informat ion about a dude named SMITH • . • I have the fu l l

name here some where. Fensterwald ask me i Smith was Raoul .

'

Now, Smith was an Anglo and I assumed he spoke wi th a Texas

a c c e n t , i . e . , he had ver-y little in common with Raoul .

Appar-ently Smith was found dead , in a f i e ld near Houston, with

a gun sho t wound to the head shor t ly a f t e rMLK

was sho t .Fens te rwa ld a l so ask me if I had seen an i nd iv idua l he had

ano ther pictur-e of . This was an Aust r i an who apparen t ly served

in the German army in WW as a commando. He ask if I had saw

t h i s person when I was t r y i n g to go to B i a f r a , i n 1968, from

Por tuga l . Some of Fens te rw ald s ques t ions in fo rmat ion fo r me

was type on paper fo r me to read, . thus I guess he thought the

v i s i t i n g room we were in was bugged. The nex t I heard about

Fens te rwa ld he had died. I now have an FOIA r eq u es t in with the

JD/FBI for- hi s f i l e . (He appeared to me, from hinds igh t aga in ,

to be more i n t e r e s t ed in a cont inous i n v es t i g a t i o n o f the MLK

case , r a th e r than re so lv ing it).

As to David Chr i s t , I assume he i s Frenchy , the guy on p.222

o f your book. I have mentioned before t h a t he has s t r i c k i n g

s i m i l a r i t i e s to Raoul, and could have been hi s b ro the r , bu t I

doubt very much if he i s Raoul . • • Percy Foreman s i n t e r e s t in

Frenchy i s r-eferred to as you know on p . 122 of your book-- I have

r e f e r r ed to t h i s in the book I had publ i shed . I ll send you a

copy under s ep e ra t e cover . ( I d o n t know if Je r ry knew Hemmings

Col l ins or not . I t h i n k you ask me about these two seve ra l

years ago. Anyway I suspec t if Jer-ry· did meet e i t h e r o f them

they were t r ave l ing under an assumed name).

What I am doing now i s f i l i n g more FOIA su i t s , both reques t s

law su i t s : I have r ecen t ly sued AG Reno. She has i s sued about 3

orders s ince October 1993 re l ax ing FOIA exemptions but so f a r

the JD/FBI has not r e a l l y complied with her orde rs . Po s s i b l y

she j u s t i s sued the o rders fo rPR

reasons . In add i t ion , in the1993 Sup. Ct . Landaoo case a f u r th e r re l ax ing of the exempt ions

es p ec i a l l y (b ) (7 ) (D) , was ordered . Consequent ly I t h i n k the FOIA

Dear Hr . Weberman:

Th o nk you for the l e t t e r 8c the Book , the l a t e r which I receiv ed some t ime

Regarding the picture yo u refer to as "Carrigan ?, the July 1977 issue of

About my testimony , i t rere i s nothing I c an ' t , or won't , testmfy to as a

In addit ion the State witness business giv es the government an excuse to

hold you in s o l i tary confinement for "protect ion  .

The FBOr may have rele a sed some f i l e s on the case under the FOI but

most everything of importance i s class i f ic ied ( inclu din g th e l as t J   D

(Smith) has also order various material p la ced in the a rchives under the

guies it i s personal matter re la t ing to   personal l i f e . Of course an y

thing could be pl a ced in th is f i l e t hat th e FB I-JD wanted suppressed .

I have writ ten Mercel E. Randolph, an SCLC leaded in Plh.ils. Pa . agre eing

to destroy anything in the archive s materi al that wou l d be co nsidered

Besides the Stephens s t atement you sent me I think (based on what 1 know)

statements of the fo l lowing will decide my cullpabl i t y in the case:
