Reborn/New LifeJames 4:17 – “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest

you also be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is

nothing, he deceives himself.

Galatians 6:1-3

RESTORING THE FALLEN

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

HOW TO RESTORE OUR BROTHER

• Matthew 18:15-17 – “go and tell him”

THE BROTHER NEEDS TO BE FACED

15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.”

MATTHEW 18:15-17

• Matthew 18:15-17 – “go and tell him”

• This is a delicate situation

• II Timothy 4:2– “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season.

HOW TO RESTORE OUR BROTHER

• Discipline: to train or develop by instruction and exercise especially in self-control

• Punish: inflict a penalty or sanction on (someone) as retribution for an offense

• There is difference between Punish and Discipline

THIS IS A RECOVERY

• 2 Corinthians 2:6-11 – “Forgive him”

6 This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man, 7 so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. 8 Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him. 9 For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things. 10 Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, 11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

HOW TO RESTORE OUR BROTHER

• John 8:11 – Woman accused– 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the

woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

• Revelation 2:4-5– 4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your

first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.

REPENTANCE IS KEY

• Plan your approach

• Have a Christian Attitude

• The brother needs to be Faced

• Remember, This is a Recovery

• Repentance is key

• Make sure it is a Complete Restoration

HOW TO RESTORE OUR BROTHER

• If they repent, don’t stop encouraging and uplifting. Your task is not done.

• Hebrews 10:24-25– 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and

good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

COMPLETE RESTORATION

• Do not fret! Let the Spirit take it from there

• Titus 3:10-11– 10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second

admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.

• 2 Thess. 3:6– 6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord

Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us.

WHAT IF THEY DON’T RESPOND?

• Do NOT overlook the sin

WHAT NOT TO DO

• 1 Corinthians 5:6-7– 6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little

leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

• But remember him, go back to him when he is ready

• What is the reason for purging out the lump?– So that it won’t affect the Christians they could influence

DO NOT OVERLOOK THE SIN

• Do NOT overlook the sin

• We must Avoid a Witch Hunt

WHAT NOT TO DO

• We may like to see others doing something wrong

• We may like to punish those who have done wrong

• Recall: – Have a Christian Attitude– Difference between Punish and Discipline

AVOID THE WITCH HUNT

• Do NOT overlook the sin

• We must Avoid a Witch Hunt

• Don’t be too quick to boot them out

WHAT NOT TO DO

• Sometimes we have to clean up the mess instead of brushing under the rug.

• If they haven’t completely fallen away why boot them out?

• Pay attention to the difference between a brother that has stumbled and a brother that has fallen away.

DON’T BE QUICK TO BOOT THEM OUT

• Hebrews 3:13-15– “but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest

any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said:

‘Today, if you will hear His voice,Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.’”

• Matthew 18:15-17 – “Go to him”

PREVENTING OUR BROTHER FROM FALLING

• Hebrews 10:24-25– 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and

good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

• Acts 20:28– 28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock,

among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
