TRANSCRIPT
JAM Internship Info Sheet Jabulani Africa Ministries (JAM) exists to train and disciple young Africans in becoming Godly,
servant leaders who can impact their communities for Christ. Young adults, age 18-25, have the
opportunity to join JAM for several months, and partner with us in fulfilling this mission. We
value people coming with servant hearts, and we believe that God uses the Body of Christ to
fulfill his mission on earth.

About South Africa
South Africa is a beautiful and diverse country. It is referred to as the
“Rainbow Nation” because of its variety of cultures. South Africa has a
sad history of racial segregation known as the “Apartheid” system. The
nation’s non-white population was forced to the margins of civilization,
which gave birth to informal settlements known as “townships” which
are found on the outskirts of towns and cities.
This horrible chapter of the country’s history was ended in 1994 when instrumental leaders
such as Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk made significant changes. Even though Apartheid
has ended, the country still faces challenges such as racism, unequal spread of wealth, poverty,
unemployment, HIV/AIDS, violence and corruption.
However, there is HOPE and POTENTIAL in this beautiful country. We can see this hope on the
faces of children playing on dust roads of rural communities, and in adults that say over and
over in their hearts, “We are going to make this new South Africa work.”
Though the JAM Team is made up of mostly South Africans, we are proud to partner with
Believers from all over the world, and together be part of the “Jabulani” (Rejoicing) that is
happening in this country.

What you’ll be doing
JAM Interns work alongside full-time staff in implementing different ministry aspects. This may
include leading camps, children’s ministry, youth programs, facilitating Bible Studies, house
visitations, and various service projects (construction, painting, etc.) The focus of JAM is
building relationships and making disciples of Jesus Christ, assisting and supporting local
churches, full-time missionaries and leaders in various communities.
The JAM Internship is intended to train young adults in the Ways and Word of God. JAM
Interns will also participate in various teachings, trainings, book study, and mentorship in order
to develop their personal walk with Christ.
Additionally, Interns have the opportunity to develop important life skills during their time with
JAM, which include punctuality, personal responsibility, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and other
household chores which contribute to the “JAM Family.”

Malaria and Vaccinations
Most areas in which JAM works are not Malaria Zones. However, the base in Mavhuza Village,
located in the province of Limpopo, is a mild Malaria Zone. Malaria cases are rare in this area,
and JAM does not require Interns to take Malaria medication while visiting this area. However,
Interns are welcome to take Malaria medication on their own accord.
We encourage all JAM Interns to visit your General Practitioner and have all necessary
vaccinations up to date. If you are travelling from overseas, we suggest visiting a Travel Doctor
and/or CDC (Center of Disease Control) before your trip.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Medical Insurance
We encourage all JAM Interns to have medical insurance that will cover them during their time
with the Ministry.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Communication
JAM Interns have access to a computer and wifi internet at Apostle Battery Campsite (base
camp). They will not have access to internet while travelling to some outreach locations. The
longest period of time they will not have access to internet is approximately 2 weeks. Local cell
phone signal is accessible in most locations, though not guaranteed. JAM Staff will be
reachable in all locations by phone or email, in case of emergencies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Currency
The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). The exchange rate is typically between R12-
R15: $1. Team members travelling from overseas can exchange money in several South African
locations, including at the airport upon arrival.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Travel Visa
If you are a non-South African joining JAM for the Internship Program, you do not need to apply
for a Visa before your trip. Upon arrival in South Africa, Immigration will automatically stamp a

The JAM Base
JAM Interns live and operate from Apostle Battery Campsite which is JAM’s “home base.”
Apostle Battery is situated on the back slope of Table Mountain, overlooking the beautiful
Llandudno beach community. It is located about 30 minutes outside of Cape Town City.
Apostle Battery is a WWII Military Base that has been converted into a fully functioning camp
site. In addition to housing JAM Staff and Interns, Apostle Battery is where the majority of
JAM’s camping ministry takes place.
JAM Interns live in dorm-style accommodation with bunk beds and a personal cupboard. There
is clean water on site, electricity, internet reception, local cell phone reception, washing
machine, kitchen facilities, etc.
Hout Bay, the nearest suburb community, is a quaint and beautiful town with shops, grocery
stores, restaurants, direct beach access, and hiking trails. There is also a post office, pharmacy
and doctor’s office. The closest hospital is 30 minutes away, located in Cape Town City.
Outreach
Outreach with JAM is one of the most incredible experiences a young person can gain during
their time with the ministry. It is when we implement our heart of service, encouragement, and
upliftment to the Greater Body of Christ.
Outreach lifestyle is very different than life at the JAM Base. Students and staff travel long
hours and sleeping arrangements vary, ranging from comfortable beds in church buildings to
concrete floors in grass huts. Electricity and running water are limited and not guaranteed.
Though there is sacrifice, there is an incredible reward, as we often see God’s hand move the
most powerfully during these times of reaching out.
JAM’s outreach seasons are typically in April, June-August, and November. JAM reaches out in
a variety of communities across the country. For information on specific outreach
communities, please visit the “Communities” page on the JAM website at www.jamafrica.co.za.
