Social media is powerful and impactful to every ones health in todays society. That is
why my main inquiry question is How does social media affect health? With this question I
explored different affects social media had on health by following leads and questions. From
this main question I found three main articles to start my inquiry. The three main articles I
obtained from my main inquiry question are Social Media Causing a Generation of Narcissistic
Kids?by Sara Novak, Social medias effect on rape cultureby Anna Wagner, andHow Does
Social Media Affect Self Esteem? by Jennifer Rose. From these articles I constructed and in depth
exploration of my main inquiry question.
The first article from my main question, Social Media Causing a Generation of
Narcissistic Kids?, explains how facebook and other social media networks are influencing teens
behavior and affecting their psychological makeup. According to this article Dr. Larry Rosen, a
social media researcher at California State University explains, "Teens who use Facebook more
often show more narcissistic tendencies while young adults who have a strong Facebook
presence show more signs of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviors,

mania and aggressive tendencies."(Novak par.6). After reading this article I caught myself
pondering what the word narcissistic meant, so to fully understand what affect this article was
trying to convey I needed to find out what narcissistic meant. Which lead me to my next
question, What is Narcissism?. That question leads me to my next article called, Narcissistic
Personality Disorder. In this article my question was answered, I found out that someone who is
Narcissistic is obsessed with themselves to the extreme. This article goes on to describes a basic
outline and provides some words that we might place with Narcissism which are; cocky,
conceded, selfish, and arrogant.
My second article I obtained from my main question is Social medias effect on rape
cultureby Anna Wagner. I found this article to be quite surprising. It goes into detail about
social media and how it contributes to the rape culture we live in. Which I was unaware of this
rape culture, but in this article it is stated, "Marshall Universitys womens studies department in
West Virginia defines rape culture as an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which
sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular
culture."(Wagner par.4). The social media site it was referring to was Reddit, which I have never
heard of before. Thus sparking my interest and leading me to my next question, What is this
Reddit site doing to contribute to this rape culture. This lead directed me to the article,Reddit
Rape Thread: Why I Dont Care What Rapists Have To Say by Abbey Lewis. It talks about how
Reddit posted a thread recently encouraging rapists to come forward and tell their side of the
story. Abbey feels this thread is blaming and shaming the victims. She goes on to say, In fact,
paying attention to them before we pay attention to the countless silenced victims sounds exactly
like rape culture to me."(Lewis par.5). This article really opened my eyes to something I never
thought social media could affect.

Lastly, my main question leads me to the article,How Does Social Media Affect Self
Esteem? by Jennifer Rose. In this article I found that social media affects different genders and
even different generations in numerous ways. It goes on to explain, that both male and female
teens may experience depression because of cyberbullying or getting left out of larger social
interactions (Rose par.3). Also this article touches on topics such as, social media is not always a
bad thing for the user, which generated my next lead, and that lead is, Is social media a good or
bad thing for health?. From this question I was steered to three different articles. The First
source was Social Media: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly by Paul Hudson. This source
adventures through the concept that social media can be good and at the same time be bad. Paul
Hudson concludes this article by saying this about social media, "If used properly, it can lead to a
feeling of connectedness and help you flourish both in your personal life and career. Used
improperly and you will find yourself with additional stress and less time to deal with it. Social
media can be a great thing if used in moderation; nevertheless, it will never be able to take the
place of actual, in-person human interaction."(Hudson par.14). My second source from that lead
was,Hospitals begin to recognize social medias potential to improve patient experience by Ann
Silversides and Joshua Tepper. This article just goes on to explain how hospitals are using
facebook and twitterto interact with patients by letting them comment or mention on the
hospitals twitter or facebook accounts about their experience and things that the hospital could
improve on or even things the patients liked, which happened to be fascinating to me, because I
was not aware that hospitals were utilizing social media in such a way. The last source I
obtained is called, Can social media be good for your health by Anne Weiler. This article talks
about how social support has been an important factor in encouraging exercise and healthy
decisions. It also states that, "With geographically dispersed families and friends and extremely

busy lifestyles, sometimes social networks like Facebook or Twitter provide that social
engagement that would have previously been in person. As a result, people are sharing more and
more about their health on social networks."(Weiler par.1). From these three articles I still find
myself pondering the question Is social media a good or bad thing for health?, but from my
exploration I feel that you can find just as many good things as you can bad that social media
does for health.
From social media affecting the rape culture, Narcissistic kids, self-esteem, to helping
hospitals improve patients experience; I am left with the notion that social media contributes to a
multitude of good and bad things for health. I feel that social media truly is one of the most
powerful impactful tools to every ones life in our society.
