His Route Traveled down the St. Lawrence river, which he
followed until he reached a large island that was ruled by hills.
• He named the St. Lawrence river• Named the island Mont Royal which
is now known as Montreal.
Where was he going?
Cartier was sent by King Francis I to the New World, in search of riches and a new route to Asia (1534).

His Mission To find islands and countries with large amounts of gold
and riches.
Voyage Impact
Cartier moved his voyage on to Chaleur Bay, where he was accompanied by Micmacs. • First act of trade between the French
and the Amerindians.
Cartier claimed possession of the Stadacona (Quebec) territory on July 24.
The Lie

Donnacona, the Native chief was very discontent.
Cartier claimed it was a landmak.
September 5th, Cartier landed back in Saint-Malo, with two precious “trophies”.
• Domagaya and Taignoagny, the sons of Donnacona who Cartier convinced to go with him.
The sons told Cartier of the St. Lawrence river and the “Kingdom and Saguenay” – the focus of his 2nd voyage.
