Sherburne Abbott is director of the Center for Science and Practice of Sustainability at The University of Texas at Austin. She was previously chief international officer at the American Association for the Advancement of Science where she directed the Center for Science, Innovation and Sustainable Development. She has consulted on environmental science and sustainable development for private foundations, the World Bank, the Brookings Institution, and other non-governmental organizations, and worked in a series of leadership positions at the National Academies’ National Research Council in sustainability and environmental research.

Rafael Alexandri is director of Consejo de Recursos Minerales/Servicio Geológico Mexicano and former director general for exploration and production of hydrocarbons in the Undersecretariat for Hydrocarbons at the Mexican Ministry of Energy. He is author of the book, "Future of the Petroleum Industry in Mexico," published in 2005. Alexandri worked previously as a consulting geologist to Mexico's leading mining firms, CEO of Minera Carbonífera Río Escondido, and director of operations for Grafito de México and Compañía Minera Autlán. He has a doctorate in geology from Colorado State University.

Diego Arjona Arjuello is general director for environmental and technological investigations for Mexico's Secretariat of Energy (SENER).

Eric Barron is the dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences and director of the Geology Foundation. He was previously dean and distinguished professor at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and former director of Penn State’s EMS Environment Institute. He has chaired several national research boards, including The Consortium for Ocean Leadership (2007), the Climate Research Committee of the National Research Council (1990-1996), and the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of the National Academies (1997-2003). His research interests are in climatology, numerical modeling, and Earth history.

John Briceño is a member of the Belize House of Representatives, former deputy prime minister of Belize, and former minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Commerce and Industry. As a member of the Belizean National Assembly, Briceño also represents Orange Walk, his home district, where he is a businessman.

Max Brouwers is the Latin America Exploration manager for Shell. Previously, he headed Shell's Global Exploration planning and strategy unit. He has also been involved with numerous new business development projects and corporate acquisitions for Shell across the globe. Brouwers is a geologist by training and has completed an MBA.

Milton E. Chaves is currently the upstream public affairs manager of ExxonMobil Corporation for Latin America. He is based in Houston, Texas. He works closely with the public affairs and government relations managers of ExxonMobil in each country in support of business development opportunities. He joined ExxonMobil as the Government Relations Manager with Mobil Agencia Administradora, S.A., Caracas, Venezuela in 1998. He was the senior commercial advisor for the United States Foreign Commercial Service in Caracas for over 20 years.

Gail Christeson is a research scientist at the Jackson School’s Institute for Geophysics (UTIG). She has special expertise in marine geophysics, mid-ocean ridge structure, and emplacement processes, oceanic crustal structure, and ocean-bottom seismology. Her work frequently involves using UTIG’s OBS instruments in a variety of settings, most recently offshore the Yucatan Peninsula and in the southeast Caribbean.

Juan Mario Dary is minister of the environment for Guatemala. Prior to this he was general manager of Laboratorios Labind, the first industrial biological laboratory in Guatemala; general manager of Services and Subministries for Water; lab chief of the environmental watch on Lake Izabal; and professor of biology at the University of San Carlos. He is a current or past president of the Guatemalan Association of Natural History, the Guatemalan Conservation Trust, and the Mario Dary Rivera Foundation, and is a founding member of the Trinational Alliance for the Conservation of the Gulf of Honduras.

Eugenio Figueroa is executive director of the National Center for the Environment, director of the Center of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, and a professor of economics at the University of Chile. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Alberta Business School. One of 24 scientific members of the Committee for Development Policy that advises the UN, he is a current or past economic adviser to governments, institutions, and companies in Africa, Asia, Europe, and America, including the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and development agencies in Germany, Japan, and Chile, among other countries.

William Fisher is a professor and former dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Petroleum Council. He was assistant secretary of interior for energy and minerals under President Gerald Ford and on the White House Science Council under President Ronald Reagan. His research has focused on stratigraphy, sedimentology, and oil and gas assessment. In 1967 he introduced the concept of depositional systems, the basis for modern resource assessment by class or play. He has championed the importance of technology in resource availability. Fisher is past president of AAPG and other national geological societies and has received numerous international honors.

Jim Flannery is ExxonMobil Exploration Company's South America area manager, responsible for hydrocarbon exploration activities in South America and the Caribbean. He previously held leadership positions in ExxonMobil's exploration, development, and production companies working the U.S. and West Africa businesses in addition to strategic planning through a career spanning 20 years. He is based in Houston.

Sylvia M. Couto Anjos is manager of geologic applications and production for Petrobras. She was previously manager of Petrobras' Biostratigraphy and Paleoecology Group and its Sedimentology and Petrogeophysics Group. She has worked with Petrobras more than 25 years, mainly in the Petrobras Research Center (Cenpes). She earned her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

José Chávez is CEO of Perupetro S.A. Previously Chávez served as contract manager for Perupetro, where he planned, directed, and coordinated contracts of exploration and hydrocarbon operation. He signed numerous agreements and contracts with petroleum companies from Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. Chávez has worked for Perupetro for 18 years, holding management positions in a range of departments. He is currently leading efforts to make Peru one of the most attractive countries to invest in and a successful player in the South American hydrocarbon industry.

Mario González is a member of the Board of Directors of PetroEcuador. A professor of petroleum engineering at Ecuador’s Coastal Polytechnic Institute (ESPOL) since 1975, he is the representative of ESPOL in Quito. From 1995-1997 he was head of Ecuador's National Hydrocarbon Directorate (DNH). He previously worked as technical representative for Pool Intairdril, a drilling company in Quito, and was a member of the board of directors of PetroEcuador in 1994-1995.

Charles Groat is a professor at the Jackson School of Geosciences, where he directs The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy and the Energy and Earth Resources graduate program. He served from 1998-2005 as director of the U.S. Geological Survey and previously as acting director of the Bureau of Economic Geology and director of the Louisiana Geological Survey. Among his many leadership roles, Groat is the past president of the Association of American State Geologists and the current president of the Environmental Geosciences Division of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Valerio Gutierrez is a Civil Engineer with a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan. He has worked for 17 years as a representative and international consultant for Kokusai Kogyo Company working on many projects in Latin America mainly related to dams, water resources, watershed management, environmental and energy issues. At present he is appointed as vice-minister of natural resources and energy of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in Honduras.

Sandra Denisse Herrera Flores is the undersecretary for environmental regulation at the Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico. She has worked in areas such as environment and gender issues within institutions of the Federal and State governments, as well as for private enterprises and for a political party. She has also carried out studies on “Ecology, Sustainable Development and Environmental Management,” “Reform of the State, Social Liberalism and Economic Change in Mexico,” and “Women training for Policy Making and Implementation.”

Michelle Michot Foss is chief energy economist and head of the Center for Energy Economics (CEE) at the Jackson School's Bureau of Economic Geology. She advises U.S. and international energy companies, publishes and speaks widely on energy issues, and provides public commentary and testimony to governments. She developed and directs New Era in Oil, Gas & Power Value Creation, an international capacity building program, and is the principal investigator for the CEE’s LNG consortium, Commercial Frameworks for LNG in North America. In 2003 she was selected one of the Key Women in Energy for the Americas.

Carlos García Moreno studied physics in the National Autonomous University of México with post degree studies in the University of London. García has worked in the nuclear sector for more than 20 years and entered the environmental sector in 1986, when he joined the Institute of the Secretariat of Urban Development and Ecology, managing research and technological development. Currently, he is director of emissions to the atmosphere at SEMARNAT and is in charge of the revision and formulation of regulations associated with atmospheric pollution.

Neal Goins is currently the president of ExxonMobil Ventures-Mexico based in Mexico City. He has held leadership positions in geoscience research, strategic planning, and exploration operations. He was principal geoscientist for Mobil Corporation, and prior to coming to Mexico served as the Area Manager for ExxonMobil in Nigeria. He holds degrees from Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Benigna Cortés Leiss is the country representative in Mexico for Chevron International Exploration & Production and business advisor in the Latin America business unit. Previously she worked for CVX Power & Gasification as director of business development and for Texaco Gas International in gas market development in Latin America and West Africa. She has more than 20 years of gas industry experience, ten in the international arena, and opened Texaco's Global Gas & Power office in Brazil, where she worked in 1998-1999.

Jay Kipper is the associate director for Administration at the Bureau of Economic Geology, where he is responsible for budget management and contract negotiation. He also supervises the three Core Research Centers in Houston, Austin, and Midland, as well as the Geophysical Log Library and Information Technology Group. He is heavily involved in business development for the Bureau, including facilitating the proposals for FutureGen and nanotechnology. Since 2005, in collaboration with the Bureau Director, Kipper has been developing a new, cutting-edge research program, which will investigate applicability of nanotechnology in the upstream oil and gas industry.

Paul Mann is a senior research scientist at the Jackson School’s Institute for Geophysics. His research interest focuses on the tectonics of late Cenozoic deformation plate boundary zones using a variety of tools including: field observations and mapping, remote sensing, and geophysical data including single- and multi-channel seismic data, seismic refraction, sidescan and multibeam, magnetics and gravity, GPS-based geodesy, and fault trenching.

Stuart Leslie is ambassador of trade in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade for Belize. Previously he was special advisor for sustainable development and the chief elections officer of Belize. He represented Belize for eight years before the United Nations, as the country's permanent representative and deputy permanent representative. Prior to that he worked in Belizean television and radio and as an educator and administrator at St. John's College in Belize City.

Jordy Hernan Herrera Flores is undersecretary of strategic plans and technological development at Mexico's Secretariat of Energy (SENER).

Raul Mosmann is regulatory affairs & geology manager for ExxonMobil-Brazil. Prior to this he held a wide range of management positions in the petroleum industry, including director of exploration and production of Petrobras, member of the board and of the Administrative Council of Petrobras, director of exploration and production of Braspetro, and general manager of Petrobras Norway. A former professor of geology, he is author of several papers and books on the Brazilian petroleum basins. Among many distinctions, he received the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Special Commendation Award and is an AAPG Honorary Member.

Bruno Longarini is the director for international program development at The University of Texas at Austin, supporting the research and educational mission of the university globally. He is responsible for strengthening university ties to international academic, governmental, and corporate partners to expand research and teaching in strategic regions of the world. Having worked previously as a management consultant in multiple countries, he has also held positions with an international focus in the offices of development, public affairs, and research at The University of Texas at Austin.

Florencia Roitstein is sub secretary of promotion at the Secretary of the Environment and Sustainable Development in Argentina. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the Ecoles Des Hautes Etudes in Paris. She has vast experience in the public, private and social sector particularly in areas related to sustainable development at both national and international levels. She has worked as a professor in various local and international universities and as a consultant for different international organizations such as the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and the European Union.

Matías Pérez is president of Metrogas, the leading company providing natural gas to Santiago, and Gasco, the oldest company in Chile. He is also vice-president of Cemento Polpaico, a Chilean cement company. He previously worked as an attorney, specializing in concessions for water supply and electricity, corporate and tax law. Matias served seven years at the Corporación Cultural de Santiago, and is a board member of the Teatro Municipal de Santiago.

Eric Potter is the associate director of the Bureau of Economic Geology, responsible for managing energy-related research. Since 2001, the energy research group has conducted significant research in Latin America, including completion of several major basin and reservoir-characterization studies for Pemex (2001-2005), and is currently working with Petrobras on a major research and training initiative. He worked 25 years in exploration and technology positions with Marathon Oil Company.

Victoria Rodriguez is the vice provost and dean of The University of Texas at Austin Graduate School, and the Ashbel Smith Professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. Dr. Rodríguez's scholarly work has focused on governance, democratization, and political change in Mexico with special emphasis on women's roles in Mexican politics. She has been a consultant for the World Bank, and in 2000 she received jointly with Peter Ward, professor in the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, the Ohtli Medal, the highest honor granted by the Mexican government outside Mexico.

Marilda Rosado de Sá Ribeiro is an attorney with KLA-Koury Lopes Advogados and former director of legal affairs for Brazil's National Petroleum Agency (ANP). Prior to joining ANP she was director of legal affairs of Repsol YPF Brasil and a professor of private international law at Rio de Janeiro State University. Professor Rosado was also a consultant to ANP and a lawyer at Petrobras. She is a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators and author of Joint Ventures in the Oil Industry (2003), among many related works.

Héctor Ruiz Díaz is vice minister of mines and energy for the Ministry of Public Works and Communication of Paraguay. He has held a number of top management and supervisory posts at Paraguay's National Electricity Agency (ANDE), where he has worked since 1982 in diverse areas including civil engineering, technical management, and legal management. From 1994-1998 he was president of the Commission of Appraisals of the binational hydroelectric organization Yacyretá (EBY). He was later head of the Department of Complementary Works at EBY.

María Salomon de Salazar is manager of geology and exploration for PDVSA. She previously served as PDVSA's vice president of management and CVP's general manager of administration and management. As an exploration geologist since 1974 she has worked in Venezuela for Creole-Lagoven, Lagoven, Total, and on special assignment at the Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of Texas at Austin.

Luis Sánchez-Barreda is the program coordinator for Latin American projects at the Jackson School of Geosciences. He is responsible for developing new projects in Latin America and acting as a liaison between the school and foreign companies and countries. His technical experience includes numerous geological studies based on field work and stratigraphic and geophysical data from the Gulf Coast, southern Mexico, and Central and South America. He has worked on basin studies for much of Latin America evaluating hydrocarbon systems, reserves, seismic stratigraphy, and geochemical analyses.

Juan Sanchez is the vice president for research at the University of Texas at Austin. He coordinates research throughout the University, handles applications for research funding, coordinates strategic areas of research focus and tracks guidelines and regulations governing research.

Jack Sharp is a professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the Jackson School. Dr. Sharp's hydrogeological research covers flow in fractured rocks, thermohaline free convection, fracture skin effects, regional flow in carbonate rocks, hydrology of arid and semi-arid zones, subsidence and coastal land loss, effects of urbanization, and alluvial aquifers.

Russell Slayback is chairman of Leggette, Brashears & Graham Inc. A consulting hydrogeologist with the firm since 1960, he became its president and chairman in 1984. His major consulting focus has been public water supply and dewatering of open-pit and underground mines. He is the member-at-large on the American Geological Institute (AGI) Executive Committee and is a past president of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). He serves on the board of trustees of the AGI Foundation and the AIPG Foundation.

Victor Manuel Suarez is the president of the Institute of Social Security of Guatemala (IGSS) and the Presidential Commissioner for the Refinery. He also was the Presidential Commissioner for Energy and Public Assets for the administration of former President Álvaro Arzú. He is a civil engineer with post-graduate studies in business administration and professor of engineering at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. He is a member of the Monetary Committee of the Technical institute of Training (INTECAP) and chairman and president of the Chamber of Industry of Guatemala y CACIF, and president of the Federation of Chambers of Industries of Central America.

Melinda Taylor is a clinical professor of law and director of the Environmental Law Clinic at The University of Texas at Austin. Previously, in addition to working as an environmental lawyer in Austin and Washington, D.C., she was director of the Ecosystem Restoration Program at Environmental Defense where she managed a staff of attorneys, scientists, and economists engaged in projects to protect endangered species and water resources. She specialized in the use of incentives and market mechanisms to encourage land and water conservation.

Scott Tinker is state geologist of Texas and director of the Bureau of Economic Geology at the Jackson School of Geosciences. Before coming to the university, Tinker spent 18 years in the oil and gas industry, most recently at Marathon Oil Company’s Petroleum Technology Center. Recipient of best paper awards in two major journals, he is a former AAPG Distinguished Lecturer, SPE Distinguished Lecturer, and current AAPG President-Elect. He is a member of many societies, boards and foundations, including the NRC Board on Energy and Environmental Systems.

Duncan Wood is director of the Undergraduate Program in International Relations and also directs the Canadian Studies Program at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) in Mexico City. He is a member of the Mexican National Research System (level 2), a member of the editorial board of Foreign Affairs en Español, and an editorial advisor to Reforma. His research focuses on the reform of the Mexican energy sector, Latin American energy policy, migration and remittances, the political economy of international finance, Canadian and Mexican foreign policy, and in particular in recent years on Canada-Mexico relations.

Sidney Weintraub is the holder of the William E. Simon Chair in Political Economy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. He has served in several positions including chief of commercial policy in the State Department, economic counselor and director of the USAID program in Chile, deputy assistant secretary of state for international finance and development, and assistant administrator of the USAID.

Roberto Urquizo is the undersecretary of environmental quality of Ecuador's Ministry of Environment. He is a registered environmental and hydrocarbon consultant for Ecuador’s National Directorate of Environmental Protection (DINAPA) and an environmental consultant for the Andean Development Corporation (CAF). He formerly served as head of the Department of Environmental Control of Guayaquil and has been a consultant and environmental auditor for a number of companies, including Cristalería del Ecuador S.A., Intervisa Trade S.A., Andigrain, Transelectric S.A., SGS del Ecuador, and Shell, among others.

Carmen Urízar Hernández de Rodríguez is the Minister of Energy and Mines of Guatemala. She is currently vice president of the Directive Counsel of the National Institute of Electrification (INDE) and president of the National Petroleum Commission. She is a member of the Atlas Economic Research Foundation, a network of Latin American experts, and of the Network of Economic Consultants of the Inter American Development Bank (IDB). Urízar was a professor of microeconomics at Francisco Marroquín University (Guatemala) and a columnist of the main daily newspapers in Guatemala.

Ramón Carlos Torres Flores is general director of energy and mining at Mexico's Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). Previously in senior positions at PEMEX, his responsibilities included integration, evaluation, and negotiation of projects in refineries, including projects aimed at the elimination of lead from gasoline and reduction of sulphur content in fuel oil and diesel. Prior to PEMEX, Torres was a manager at Nacional Financiera, worked for the UN, and was vice president of Grupo EPN, a private company supplying capital to the electric and oil industry. Torres has taught in several of Mexico's most prestigious universities.

Andres Zuzek is principal exploration adviser to BP, where he has worked for the past 23 years. His work has mainly been related to generating and opening new potential frontier plays and country-entry opportunities in oil & gas. Most of his career has been devoted to the exploration of deep water basins, in the Gulf of Mexico, Angola, Nigeria, and Brazil. He recently led the team that assessed the exploration potential of Russia. During his 36 years in the industry, Zuzek has worked in most of the hydrocarbon bearing basins in South America, Central America, and Mexico.
