The time has come where I share and complete many things for the last time here at FUMC Mt. Vernon. So it is with this Jack’s Journal. I want to give my heartfelt thanks for allowing me to be your preacher for the past five years, and for many of you, being your pastor during my tenure. I will always remember our interactions with one another and especially those intimate epiphany moments during worship, baptism, confirmation, Bible Study, serving Holy Communion, hospital visits, mission, prayer times, and celebration of resurrection of loved ones. God blessed our journey together.

It will be hard for Marlane and I to dig up our roots as we relocate to Irving, Texas. Yet, on those roots, we will carry many blessed moments; through the best of times and through some difficult ones, God was ever present with us.

I assure you the Holy Spirit will remain with all of us and work within us even as our lives move apart. As we say our “see-ya-laters”, I wish to leave you with a departing blessing. These are just some things to think about as we move forward in our journeys with Christ. The thoughts come from an Advent devotional of a church I pastored several years ago.

Even though we do not ask for it soon enough, help is always available for any situation - Jim Clark Paul instructs us in 2 Corinthians 10:5, "Take every thought captive to obey Christ" so that we may focus on the path ahead of us. Staying focused means keeping in prayer, Bible study, and accountability in fellowship - Heather Haynes We do not need to doubt God’s plan for our lives; God knows the plan for our lives and we need to put all our trust in him - Katie Haynes Let God open your eyes - Kathryn Raebel Turning what seems to be a difficult task into a letter of love will plant seeds for God’s kingdom - Larry Johnson God will wrap His arms around us and gives us Peace and Hope when we think we just can’t go one more step - Terri Chesser

Where is God calling me to make and keep a promise today? - Jack Wallace

“Trust in the Lord, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

May God continue to bless FUMC Mount Vernon and your new pastor, Rev. Stephen Cotten. Marlane and I will miss you and look forward to hearing great news of how you are “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Grace and peace,Jack

For the last 5 months, the students have been crazy busy with school and youth!! We need prayers more than you can imag-ine!! Our Senior Sunday was incredibly special to me, as i would hope to all that attended. As we have graduated our seniors, we ushered in 12 confirmands on Wednesday.

We gathered to have a meet and greet, some food and then off to Sonic for fun and games. I think we all had some anxiety about the night, but --as always Our Lord provides peace, comfort and when He is smack dab in the middle of our gathering, well...ENOUGH SAID! I am looking forward to ALL that is in store for FUMCYOUTH.Just a quick note of thanks to everyone who provides, donates, prays and supports our youth. Your gener-osity shows through His amazing love!

His light shines thru each of us.Cindy, Youth Director

Thank you to the students, par-ents, and friends that helped us present our Mother’s Day Musi-cal “7 Days of Creation”. The message of God’s provision and love was beautifully (and some-

times comically) shared through this presentation by the kids, supported by the volunteers in practice, strengthened by the tech crew, costume and set hands, and made a message well received by our wonderful congregation. We can’t go without express-ing our appreciation to Today’s Christians Sunday School Class for the great breakfast and the Charles Bruce Me-morial Fund for the flowers delivered to the ladies of the audience. Have a fun and safe summer and keep coming to church as you make your plans.

Blessings,Pam Greenberg, Children’s Director

Rainbow ConneCtionSummer has managed to sneak up on us this year! The kids are out of school and many of them have joined us for summer camp! We have 25 school age children enrolled this year and have divided them into two classes. They have a busy summer scheduled including field trips, the library summer reading program, movies, swim lessons, skating, bowling, and lots of fun games with friends at Rainbow.

Our kids really enjoyed the Trike-a-Thon on May 6. They rode bikes, tricycles, scooters, and buggies all around the parking lot. They finished the event with popsicles!

The PK class got to celebrate the end of their school year by visiting the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler. They loved seeing the animals and picnicing at the park area. The school agers celebrated the end of their school year by going to the Sonic for treats and games.

Teacher of the Month for May was Amber Talsma, our 3-year-old teacher. Ms. Amber is just finishing up her first year at Rainbow. Amber’s children love her quiet, sweet spirit. This coming year Amber and Gina will be doing some team teaching with the three and four year olds. Amber is a certified teacher with a Master’s degree in Early Childhood and a specialization in reading. She has two children that come to Rainbow and one at the public school.

We plan to have our annual garage sale in August. Start cleaning out!

As Randall Byrd, Chair of Trustees, states, “… we will be better as a church after this Restoration symbolically, physically and spiritually. A church is not just a building; it is the people that occupy it.”Yes, restoration will begin on the church offices, Upper Room, hallways, through God’s Garden beginning the week of June 13th. The Restoration is the result of major flood damage to the building from the torrential rains and storms of December 2015.

All the interior restoration of $297,950 (covered by our insurance less our $5,000 already paid) includes, severe mold remediation, materials replacement, carpeting, painting, and total renovation of restrooms to ADA certification.

Outside renovation of sidewalks, drainage, elevation grades, landscaping to rectify the flood issue and to pass a building water test for insurance purposes is required at a cost $50-70,000 at our expense. The Church Council voted to fund this part of restoration with a 5-year, 4.5% loan from FNB Mount Vernon with no prepayment penalties.

Total restoration will last 10-12 weeks where there is no usage or limited access to the old building including bathrooms and sanctuary. Worship and Sunday School will occur in the Family Life Center (a plan has been developed) during restoration until authorized back into the building by the contractors. As Betsy Gekiere states, this will be of “Restoration in our Summer Home.” You will receive more information by mail and announcements in the coming weeks. We are the church together regardless of our place of gathering or worship.

Working together Christ for restoration, Pastor Jack

...to receive back more than has been lost to the point where the final state is greater than the original condition. The main point is that someone or something is improved beyond

measure.”Begins Monday, June 13th
