AQUARIUM OF THE PACIFIC

CADETTE BADGE

MARINE LIFE INTEREST PROJECT

This journal belongs to:AQUARIUM OF THE PACIFIC

Answers to the following sections:Skill Builder #1: 1. Wind waves move more along the surface while the

tsunami waves are just seen as it hits the shore.

2. The energy causing wind waves just affect the surface.

Tsunami waves are caused as major events such as

earthquakes, meteors, and underwater landslides cause

an immense amount of fast moving energy. Once this

energy meets the shallow coastline, the energy moves

vertical and creates a wave that meets the beach. This

type of energy affects the entire water column.

Skill Builder #3 (Page 2): 1. Trunk = Stipe 2. Branch = Pneumatocyst

3. Roots = Holdfst 3. Leaf = Blade

Skill Builder #3 (Page 3): 1. Giant Sea Bass- Bottom 2.Sheepshead Wrasse-

Steps that can be completed

here at the Aquarium of the

Pacific will have this symbol:

Service Projects

1. Volunteer with a marine education organization or an aquarium. Help educate others about the importance in preserving the marine ecosystem (Check out the Aquarium of the Pacific’s volunteer opportunities on our website: www.aquariumofpacific.org)

2. Help in a beach Clean up.3. Help a program like Friends of the Sea Lion

Steps that must be filled out on

your own or at home are labeled

with this symbol:

Career Exploration # 1&2

Choose one of the following three options

There are many careers available that are related to the ocean and marine organisms. This may be a marine biologist, a marine mammal trainer, an aquarist, a marine veterinarian, informal educator, college professor, a research scientist, etc.

Read through the job descriptions provided on our website to give you a

better idea of a marine related careers. Could you see yourself in

one of these jobs? What are some of the pros and cons of these careers?

What advice do they have for someone who is interested?

Marine Life Interest ProjectThis booklet is to be used as a self-guided tool to complete steps for the Marine Life Interest

Project. Troop leaders and parents, please review the activities and help your Girl Scouts complete the steps required. There are steps

that can be completed at home, and steps to be completed here at the Aquarium (see below). While at the Aquarium of the Pacific use the

Event Map to guide you. These self-led activities can be completed at anytime during

the event. When you are finished with your booklet it will be checked off by

your troop leader.

Skill Builder #1

Wind waves are the type of waves that can be seen crashing on the beach. Wind waves

transmit energy, not water mass. The energy from the wind causes the wave but the water

molecules only move in small circles.

Skill Builder #2

71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. Therefore, it is very important that we understand and care for the ocean. It is

essential that we keep the ocean clean and healthy. Examine your community to find out how we are polluting the ocean locally. What are some ways that you can help

minimize pollution? Globally, oil spills harm a lot of coastline. Examine the effects that an oil spill has on the

animals that live in the ocean and along the coast.

Visit our wave machine in our Tropical Pacific Gallery. Observe both wind waves and tsunami waves.

What are some of the differences you observe between these twotypes of waves?_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Why do we not see the tsunami wave until reaches shore?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Skill Builder #4

Our local Pacific waters are sustained by a rich abundance of plankton. Plankton are plants and animals that drift in

our ocean’s currents. Many animals rely on plankton as the start of a very large food chain.

Visit our Northern

Pacific Gallery to see

examples of plankton

on the screen!

Technology #1Visit one of our tidepool touch pools to observe these

animals and their behavior. How can these animals survive in the intertidal zone where the tide rises and

falls, covering and exposing the animals and the waves constantly crashing on top of them?

Pick two animals to observe. What special characteristics do

these animals have to help them live in this demanding habitat?

Visit our Southern California gallery to learn about our local kelp forest habitats. Kelp provides a habitat for

hundreds of different species of fish and invertebrates.

Skill Builder #3

Using the Blue Cavern habitat as a guide, labelthe following kelp forest animals and match them

to the layer that they are most commonly found in. Do the animals live near the canopy, in the

midwater or near the bottom?
