Kerry Benson, strategic communication track chair, has been nominated by the KU Senior Class of 2016 as a finalist for the Honor for Outstanding Progressive Educator, or H.O.P.E., Award. This is the 10th time Benson has been a finalist for the award. Doctoral student Goran Ghafour's dissertation proposal has been approved by KU's Doctoral Student Research Fund Program to fund the dissertation's research materials. York Times who died in February. The first David Carr Fellow will spend two years in The Times newsroomcovering the intersection of technology, media and culture. The focus of the fellow's work could be steady,sustained news stories, magazine-style features, investigative efforts, videography, or a mix ofapproaches, depending on the interests of the fellow and the recommendation of Times editors. Thefellowship is an opportunity for a journalist early in his or her career to build upon Carr's commitment toholding power accountable and telling engaging, deeply reported stories. Journalists with experience of alltypes are welcome, especially those from digital and new media. The deadline to apply is Nov. 14, and thefellowship will begin in early 2016. Scholarship prizes range from $1,000 to $5,000.Deadlines vary for each category. Spark KC: Advertising's Career Conference 2015 is 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the College BasketballExperience inside the Sprint Center with a post-conference networking event 3-5 p.m. across the street atPizza Bar. The event provides students with valuable information to help them succeed, such asresume/portfolio reviews, keynote presentations and panel sessions. Students can register online for $30,which increases to $35 at the door.

The Carnegie-Knight News21 program invites journalism students to apply for this prestigiousopportunity. The program begins with a virtual seminar during the spring 2016 semester taught by LeonardDownie Jr., former editor of The Washington Post. Students will conduct research and learn from expertson civil rights in America. The seminar is followed by an immersive reporting experience in the summer, ledby News21 Executive Editor Jacqueline Petchel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist. Studentswork out of a newsroom at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication indowntown Phoenix and travel the country to report and produce their in-depth, multimedia stories. The BEA Festival of Media Arts is accepting entries for its international exhibition of student work in thefollowing competitions: audio, documentary, interactive multimedia, two-year/small colleges, news,scriptwriting, sports and video. Winners will receive recognition and exhibition of their work during BEA'sannual convention in Las Vegas, April 17-20, 2016. Deadline is Dec. 15. Learn more here.

The University of Kansas TRIO McNair Scholars Program is seeking applicants for 2015-2016. Theapplication is open until Nov. 27. The McNair Scholars Program helps low-income, first-generation college-going and underrepresented minority undergraduates prepare for doctoral study. Students who participatein this program are provided with paid research opportunities, faculty mentors, a GRE preparation courseand tutoring. Advertising Women of New York invites J-School students to sign up for its annual Advertising CareerConference (ACC). The two-day event starts Nov. 19 with anetworking and career fair. The next day features workshops, networking and a visit to one of the manycompanies that are part of the AWNY community. Students (including those graduating in December or May) who are members of the National Associationof Black Journalists or the National Association of Hispanic Journalists are encouraged to apply to TheNew York Times Student Journalism Institute, which is May 21-June 5, 2016, at the CUNY GraduateSchool of Journalism in Manhattan.
