– 17pSK-9 Commissioning Status of

FNALPAC approval in 2001. But experiment was not scheduled due to concerns about “proton economics”
Spectrometer upgrade funded by DOE/Office of Nuclear Physics.
MOU was made in 2008, Fermilab PAC 2nd stage approval in 2008 Scheduled to run for 2 years in 2010, 2011 Data analysis will last for 3 years after the beamtime.

Current Schedule
Proton beam has not come to the experiment yet. – Beam line construction by Fermilab was delayed. – Addition of shielding was required by a safety committee. – Vacuum leak is being repaired by an outside company:
critical path.

Beam will come by November 1st. Two month commissioning can be assumed. At least three months for physics run until one-year
shutdown from the spring, 2012.
Spectrometer Readiness
Hodoscopes – Ready, waiting for the beam. – Need for initial commissioning.
Drift chambers – Great contribution from SeaQuest-J: Florian Sanftl, Shou
Miyasaka, Kenichi Nakano. – Old chambers have been repaired. – Noise reduction and readout test going on.
Target – Almost ready to be installed.
Magnets – Ready.

Possible Statistics for the 1st Run
Assumptions – Instantaneous rate: Assume 4e11 protons/s (20% of
proposal rate) – Accelerator efficiency: 70% – Experiment efficiency:70%
With three month physics run (assuming Jan to Mar), 4e11/s*4 s*60*24*30*3 month*0.7*0.7= 10 e16
protons = 2% of MOU (between SeaQuest and Fremilab).
There is a possibility for the run to be extended till May (~two months gain).
Note that the full amount of the protons on target defined in the MOU will be delivered finally.

Summary & Outlook
Preparation for E906/SeaQuest progresses. The experiment is ready for beam commissioning.
SeaQuest-J has great contribution especially for chamber construction, refurbishment, and readout.
Expecting the 1st beam in November, and three month physics run until March, 2012. – Two month extension may occur.
With three month physics run, 2% of the final goal of the statistics may be taken.
Even with the limited statistics, good physics output can be foreseen.
SeaQuest-J plans to construct a new Station 3 – chamber, which covers the lower half of the Station 3.
