The Pitch

It is in the motley array of promise and compromise that design lives and breathes. To paraphrase Louis Kahn, “we begin with the unmeasurable, then go through measurable means to create something that is unmeasurable once more.” This should remain genuine through all scales of design. From a pen to a penthouse, a shoe to a city, we aspire to reach something more. So here I am. I give myself to the relentless pursuit of wonder and creation. Care to join me?

GALILEO

As I welcomed product design into my educational experience, my first design challenge took a look at time. How do we as humans measure time? Memories, breaths and the more conventional seconds all ran across my mind throughout this project. My solution took a more classic approach to measuring time with a bit of personal style.

SOLARA

A large part of my design process puts focus on experimenting and prototyping. I approached this experiment wanting to further my knowledge of concrete as a building material. Wanting to contrast the perception of what concrete is used for, and how it is implemented, I raised this 120 pound block in the air on five all-thread rods to create a rustic yet modern wine rack that provides functionality and a unique aesthetic.

During my studies in Denmark I focused on furniture design. The chair I designed and built is an original piece with strong Scandinavian influences that went from design to finished product in just three weeks. I was intrigued with the vintage production methods and focused on implementing those strategies in my chair.

With a small budget and a goal in mind a classmate and I set out to create a kit of parts that could be rearranged to make two different versions of a stool. The objective was to create something that displays the culture of making that our department has embraced, and use it to get the general public interested in what our program has to offer. In two weeks we designed and fabricated stools that would dry-fit easily enough for children to assemble but sturdy enough to support their parents. It was a hit!

POINT. POINT. POINT.

POINT. POINT. POINT.

One week. Three points. Zero dollars. The requirements few and the options many, I set out to design and build a stool for competition. This stool, made of bent steel rod and CNC milled plywood sat above its competitors at the end of the day claiming the people’s choice award.

The second attempt at chair design proved challenging, but once more by focusing on creating a beautiful, functional chair the result was gratifying. By putting emphasis on the manufacturing process I applied contemporary technological methods to create a chair with a human touch.

VIS RESTAURANT & RETAIL SPACE

Vis, meaning force/power in Latin, is a high end clothier complimented by an American topaz restaurant on its mezzanine. Located in the Soho district of New York City, this dual purpose building indulges its unique clients with luxury and style but with an informal twist. Hardy Aimes once said that, “A man should look as if he has bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them.” Vis is a direct response to this phrase, giving you a place to buy your clothes and a place to display them.

Gavin & Howe was a partner project based mainly in the realm of space planning. This 60,000 sq.ft. space proved to be a challenging undertaking. After ample research on the direction that office space for law firms are heading we developed a system that gave the valued window space to everyone. This space puts comfort and balance at the forefront making the environments more inviting.

WOUNDED WARRIORSEDUCATION AND REHABILITATION CENTER

The aim is to create a rehabilitation center in Manhattan, Kansas because of its proximity to Fort Riley military base, and its proximity to Kansas State University allowing for a number of opportunities in an effort to help our wounded warriors. This rehabilitation center will serve soldiers that are primarily effected by mental disorders such as PTSD and severe anxiety. This center, will focus on education and workplace re-entry through a variety of therapy methods. The designed environment will promote holistic healing and incorporate beauty of nature in the design creating a unique place that people return to for its incredible spatial experience.

Floor Plan

This project was a result of a capstone studio in which I did rigorous research and applied design theories in an effort to de-institutionalize a center used for healing. Designing at different scales became another focus of this project as I transgressed from master planning through product design.

In my years of study I have become well versed in environmental systems. In this project my group of four explored solutions that could be functional and intriguing to citizens utilizing the pavilion.

LAKE HOUSE

Revisiting a project from my first year of design school I approached this lake side residence with a more in-depth look at the context and its spatial quality. This program provided the opportunity to develop my design from hand sketches to BIM modeling.
