President Jennifer proved her ability to adapt and rule once again while adjusting to a fluid agenda and the flow of PWR’s ever evolving meetings. Calling the assembled to order, our opening video presentation this week was a “Poetry Slam”. It’s actually one of the first “raps” this reporter ever heard that was actually understandable (apologizes to Reverend Bruce Levering). After introduction of guests, visiting Rotarians, and our head table the assembled eagerly awaited the presentations of this year’s speech contestants. But wait, it seems as though the Speech Contest Committee had already

determined the winner for us! So the meeting continued with the normal format and the following announcements Mr. Alex Medina rang the bell celebrating the introduction of the latest addition to his growing family and I suspect somewhat of an apology, as the day of his sons’ birth was also the scheduled moving date to a new residence. Can this guy handle stress or what? Our blood drive against the “other” Sacramento Rotary is still falling behind but Judge Abbott is calling for a full forensic audit due to the double counting of the piss ants!! of participation in “Fire Side Chats” and urged the assembled to at least notify assigned Hosts if you not able to attend the session scheduled. Don Jamison reminded us that Feb. is PWR Foundation Month so “Just Give.org”. Festa d’Bowla Bashsa chair Tom Knox advised that sponsorships are still available and discounted. Even though the event was Sat. 2/25/12 sponsorships are still being accepted to cover the committee’s administrative expenses. On behalf of PWR’s Benevolent Giving Committee, Ms. Pam Lapinski presented Ms. Janet Simpson of Encina High School a check for $2,000 to assist in the purchase of a sound and lighting system for the Drama and Arts Dept. Past President Tom Harvey reviewed the highlights and other

eventful occurrences during his term of 1990-91. Drew Houghton remembered intimate details of the “Zipper Incident” at the Sutter Club. (Probably the last time we were able to hold a function there). Our speech contest winner Zavier Amin was up next and gave a thoughtful insight as to overcoming ones personal perceptions and biases. Lessons of life learned overcoming hurdles to attain personal achievement. Zavier is on his way to represent us at the District contest not to mention advanced studies in pharmaceutical chemistry at UCD upon graduation form Encina. Given the shifting agenda we have a special speaker, Ms. Michael Alexander. Ms. Alexander spoke of her career as a teacher and her love of the Arts, her

decision to move from Rio Americana to Encina, the challenges they are now facing as a 6-12 institution, as well as the impact on students and instructors. Before the meeting ended President Jennifer was interrupted by Judge Abbott about his and the birthday girl’s (Karolina Maluga) scheduled for a 2X2! Despite Past President Gray Hardesty trying to halt the madness, the Judge prevailed and disclosed little known personal facts of Karolina. It was well worth the extra 2, 3, 5 minutes, as they “ratted” on each other. Including: a blonde, blue eyed, white girl joining the Black Student Alliance and his Honor forced into a 35 year suspension of his professional golf tour. You really had to be there to appreciate it!

Festa will be on us before we know it. If you have an interesting item that you think will sell well, please contact JR and let him know. This is a big fundraiser for us and we need everyone’s help. The International Conference is just a few months away, i.e. May 6 –

9 in Bangkok, Thailand. Register for the convention and reserve your hotel on-. The hotel form includes an updated map and newly added hotels. Don’t forget there is a Rivercat’s Rotary Day coming up in April. Last year everyone had a great time. It’s Sunday, April 15 at 1:05 pm. Tickets are from $15 to $21. Check the District Newsletter for more information.

Political Insights By Anonymous

The problem with political jokes is they get elected. ~Henry Cate, VII [That really hurts]. We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office. ~Aesop [See? This has not changed for c. 2300 years.] If we got one-tenth of what was promised to us in these acceptance speeches there wouldn't be any inducement to go to heaven.~ Will Rogers Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber. ~Plato [2300 years and nothing has changed but the names on the doors] Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a

bridge even where there is no river. ~Nikita Khrushchev [They had to make promises in the old USSR?]. When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President; I'm beginning to believe it. ~Clarence Darrow [Guy Mollet was one of the most successful premiers in the French Fourth Republic. He headed a government for two whole years! He said, "France is the perfect democracy. Any little French boy can grow up to be premier --- and most of them do."] Why pay money to have your family tree traced; go into politics and your opponents will do

it for you. ~Author Unknown If God wanted us to vote; he would have given us candidates. ~Jay Leno [I'm not sure that's God's fault but what a great line. Jay Leno --- ah --- borrowed this from Jim Hightower, a Texas politician. It's the title of a book he wrote. He also wrote "There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road But Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos"] Politicians are people who, when they see light at the end of the tunnel, go out and buy some more tunnel. ~John Quinton Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other. ~Oscar Ameringer The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it. ~P.J. O'Rourke I offer my opponents a bargain: if they will stop telling lies about us, I will stop telling the truth about them. ~Adlai Stevenson, campaign speech, 1952 A politician is a fellow who will lay down your life for his country. ~Texas Guinan Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically, by definition, be disqualified from ever doing so. ~Gore Vidal [I

once read about an Indian tribe who had to imprison their choice of chief until he agreed to serve. That's definitely the right spirit.] I have come to the conclusion that politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians. ~Charles de Gaulle Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks. ~Doug Larson Don't vote, it only encourages them. ~Author Unknown There ought to be one day - just one - when there is open season on senators. ~Will Rogers [He wasn't usually that nasty (not that he was wrong, mind you). This is of a piece with the joke, "Q: What's black and brown and looks good on a politician? A: A Rottweiler."]

Teichert Named Future Governor

Fred A. Teichert, a long- time member of the Sacramento Club, has been selected to serve as District 5180 Governor in 2014-2015. Teichert has an MBA and LHD from Sacramento State University. He is an executive officer at Teichert, Inc., and the Teichert Foundation. He was

Bowling Bash 2012

Well, the Bowling Bash 2012 was another successful social event for PWR. From the looks of the photos, everyone had a great time and this was the biggest attendance ever! We are still waiting for the final tally to see who will win the big grand prize!

Do you know who our charity partner is this year? This year Point West Rotary will be helping Sierra Forever Families through its contributions from Festa di Vino. Their mission statement is “we transform the lives of children in foster care by building and nurturing permanent families.” They have four centers, Sacramento Center, Nevada City Center, Auburn Center (PlacerKids) and Chico Adoptive Family Resource Center. Bob Herne,

Executive Director says, “Sierra Forever Families is committed to providing and enhancing post-permanency services. They were the first agency in Northern California to open an Adoptive Family Resource Center.” Each of their offices provides information, referrals; support groups and engage in permanency competent therapeutic support. In collaboration with the State, Sierra provides post adoption supports to an additional nine rural counties in Northern California. Sierra is also part of the Community Champions Network Collaborative that recently developed a post adoption website for the Sacramento area. understanding, goodwill, and peace

through a world fellowship of business and
