Proposal – Relocation of Feeder Schools
Staff are proposing to transition the following feeder schools; Lord Elgin PS and Roland Michener PS, from J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate to Ajax HS.
The proposal identifies transitioning a grade at a time, beginning with current grade 8’s, for September 2018.
The gradual implementation of pupils from elementary to secondary has now become standard, for the Durham District School Board.
Students currently attending J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate (from the Roland Michener PS and Lord Elgin PS feeder school areas) will remain and graduate at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate.
Proposal – Relocation of Feeder Schools
The impact of the gradual implementation of students from Lord Elgin PS and Roland Michener PS from J. Clarke Richardson to Ajax HS is as follows:

Boundary Process/FAQ
What is the process for boundaries/program moves? Board Regulation #3313: School Boundaries is followed to create
new boundaries and adjust existing boundaries or move a program (ie. French Immersion).
When will a decision be made? A decision is scheduled to be made at the January 22, 2018
Board Meeting.
Who makes the final decision? The Board of Trustees makes the final decision, after
consideration of a staff report that will review data, input from the community and provide a recommendation.
Opportunities for Input
Community Input Sheets are available tonight for your input on the proposal
Email your questions/concerns to:
Call and leave your questions/concerns at:
(905) 666-8080 ext. 5109
Input will be collected until November 30, 2017 and summarized in a report to Trustees.
Summary of Community Input to Date
We live closer to Pickering HS, why does the proposal identify
Ajax HS?
Similar to J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate, Pickering HS does not have the space to accommodate additional feeder schools.
Is my child eligible for transportation to Ajax HS? Students are eligible for transportation if their primary
address is more than 3.2 kilometres to Ajax HS.
Summary of Community Input to Date (Continued)
We have one child already at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate.
With this proposal my younger child would attend Ajax HS splitting them between two schools. For many reasons, I want them to go to the same school. Will there be exceptions?
Due to enrolment pressures at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate, the proposal to transition students to Ajax HS does not incorporate the opportunity for student exceptions (to attend J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate).
Older siblings could attend Ajax HS as there is space at the school.
Summary of Community Input to Date (Continued)
The Fraser Report identifies a ranking of 6.8 for J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate and a ranking of 5.4 for Ajax HS. It will be difficult for my children to get into a good post-secondary school if they have to go to Ajax HS.
The Fraser Report provides a very limited view of the school performance
and only reports on EQAO data.
Ajax HS has set goals for improving student achievement and has targeted
intervention strategies. To assist in attaining these goals, Ajax HS has
identified tools to prepare students for the EQAO assessment including;
using support material, and implementing teaching strategies (such as
levelled literacy intervention for gap closing and the inclusion of a diverse
set of resources) to better meet student needs.
It would be important to consider various aspects of school data such as
graduation rates, credit completion and factors that are school-specific,
like the prevalence of ESL or special needs students for a more fulsome
view of the school learning community.
Ajax HS Youth Hub
Overview and Timelines
The grand opening of the Ajax HS’s Youth Hub is scheduled for January 2018.
The goal of the Youth Hub is to create a safe, inclusive, welcoming and non-judgemental space where all youth feel supported.
Offered to youths in Grades 7 – 12, it is a space where teens can socialize with friends, hang out, learn, study and just be themselves.
The Youth Hub will be open during school hours for specific programming opportunities.
The after school component of the Youth Hub will available to community youth Monday to Friday from 3pm – 6pm.
Ajax HS Youth Hub (continued)
