Located in south Arkansas, the Allen Rouse i s a local historic landnark, ~iiginallg constructed in 1873 as a four-room dog-trot structure, the Allen House is chazacteristic a£ transitional architecture.

The original cornpasition of the house was four moms, wUch were b u i l t in 1873. The open "dog-trot" measured twenty-eight feet by ten feet, The t w o raorns on the front of thz house rneasurd sixteen feet squaxe each; the two rear rooms measwed twelve feet by sixteen feet. The t o t a l size of the original house was twen ty - e igh t feet by forty-two feet . Chimneys w e r e oanstmcted at t h e end of each of t he sixteen- foot-square roams, Flost of thz lumbar for the house was acquired in camden and brought to the sit2 by oxen-drawn wagon, The original windm s5lls (which are still present) were made f r o m timber cut on t h e Allen property.

The original roof was composed of hand-made shingles also taken from thber of the mien proserty. The o r i g i n a l four rooms are marked by sixte=-root ceilzngr and stil l retain f lushboard w a l l s and eeil ings . In 1907, Walter Howard Allen e n l a r g d and adapted the house to Ehe needs of his family of fourteen, In that year, five roons were zdded, t'le , . dog-trek enclosed and the porch on the facade added. The hcuse app~ars today much the same as it did after the 1907 reno- vatic=. The facade is marked by a wide, ell-shaped veranda which sweeps t h e entfre width of the house. The roof of the veranda is '

s l i g h t l y hipped and 5s suppreed by slender turned pasts w i t h scroll brackets. The corn ice on t h e porch is marked by decorative spindle- work. The two r c m m s on t h e Eacada are topped by a hipped roof, which features gable ends on either side. The gables face the f r o n t of the structure. The Allen Rouse is covered i n shiplap. With the exception of the veranda on the facade, It uti l izes simplicity in its design. Windows in the house are double-hung and feature two-over-two l i t e s . They are surrounded by simple molding, as are the doors throughout the house. A simple cornice, comparable to that on the original structure surrounds the entire house. - T?-te interior of the Allen House s t l l l maintains the character of the period in which it was original ly constructed. The origir.al four. r o o m s r2tAj.n their flush-board walls and c e i l i n g , wide-plank pine floors and or ig ina l man te l s .

On t h e grounds is a mall s t r u c t u r e which originally served as the ki tchez. It has since been used as a tenant house, The small structure is ccrzred in vertical board-and-batten and features double-hu~g, two-ov?r-two l i t e windows w i t h simple molding. The building is tapped

ad by a gable roof. Rectangular in shape, it has a shed m f addition to the resr.

In 1950 when the Allen House w a s acquired by the present occupants, a compl;Ee renovation w a s undertaken. This included new p l W i n g , new electrical wiking, a new roof and other structural improvements, Althoqh this program was thorough, the original composition of the house and the additions mads in 1907 were not altered.

Dcspite its 1907 additions, the present structure has a uni f i ed appear- ance. The Allen House has been well preserved and remains in excellent condition-

Located near the southwestern Arkansas community 05 Spotville, the Allen House uas original ly constructed in 1873. The structure is representc- tive of the transitional architecture may dog-trot structures have undergone, The hocse is also significant in i t s representation of t h e . early settlement: sf the area. William H, Allen sett led iil the area around 1960 and w a s one of t he first successful farmers and landamars in t h a t particular part sf C a l ~ n b i a County. His success at farming and business can be at tr ibuted to his expert business a b i l i t y and to the l o cz t i on of h i s property. The Al len progerty is located an the old EkgnoZLz-El abrado Road which was one of the earliest roads 5-n the souther- part of Arkansas,

W i l l i s i r . Henry Allen was h r n in 1833 in Georgia. He moved with his parents to C w s a County ,Alaba.?ra in the late 1840's- Eliza G i l i s p i e Allen k*zs born in IB35, also in G e o r g i a . Her parents moved to Coosa County, Alabama in the late 1840's. W. H. Allen and Eliza Gilispie were rarrfed on January 8 , 1852, and shortly thereafter left aria traveled b-ymulshack to Colrmibia County, ArkanszS, The 1860 census shows t h a t W i l l i a ~ H. and Elfza G i l i a p i e Allen of Columbia County, Arkansas had t w o children, Albert Hezekiah, aye four, born in Alabama, and S m e l , age one , born in Arkansas, This indicates that t h e Allens arrived in C o l d i a County between 1856 and 1859.

Upon =rival in Columbia County, the A l l e n family settled in the Ehenezer community. They then m . o v e d northwest to Clark County, Arkansas, In 1859 A l l e n bought a large tract of lana i n Columbia County from the government- By 1863 he owned throe-hundred-twelve acres in Co3uinbia Count!? .

W. H . Allen raised corn , bred livestock and loaned money to neighbors to establish them in farming. ~13en's success was dus to his remarkable business a b i l i t y ,

Allen was inducted into the ConEederate Army on July G , 1861, at Camp Pric-r: in northeast Arl;zns,ss. Ere served a s cl Corrmissary Serqsant i n Company F., Eighth I n f a r ~ t r y . A l l e n fought in t h e battles of Farmington tt id C x i n t h .

who was a successful land speculator from New Yerk. In the late 1 8 3 0 ' s William Wood om& over 30,000 acres of land in Arkansas, approximately seven thousand acres of w h i c h w e r e l o c a t e d in Columbia County.

The A l l e n family had, before the C i v i l War, m a i n t a i n 4 a general store in their house, Upon Allenus rising success as a famsx, he was able ta construct another building close to his residence to house the general store. The store carried groceries, hardware and home needs. Allen also used the general store as an o u t l e t f o r caskets he cons t ruc ted , Allen's business interests also included a mule-cgerated cotton gin on his pragerty that is said to have produced one bale of cot ton a dey. Also a blacksnith shop was operated on the property.

In 1873, A l l e n constructed a four-room dog-trot house, w t t h an open hallway 28 feet by 10 feet. The total size of the house was 28 feet

W i l l i a - 1 1 H. Allen died c, 1900- The youngest of h i s f ive children, Walter Howara, Lived i n the house his entire l i f e t i m e , for when he married Niss Minnie C)della Smith in 1882, they lived w i t h his parents. Walter Howard Allen m3. his wife enlarged and renovated the house in 1907. The A l l e n House-still retains the appearance created by the 1907 renovations.

The Allen House is a home whose history is intertwined with a single family. Since its construction in 1873, the A l l e n House has c o n t i n u a l l y been and occupied by a menber of the Pillen family. The presenk owner is a granddaughter of William FI. Allen, the o r i g i n a l owner of the house. The his tor ic Allen House stands as a local landmark in C u l u ~ b i a Comty and as representative af t h e s e t t l e m e n t of the are2 and 0 2 transitional architecture. It is a s i g n i f i c a n t historic property.
