A GROUND ELECTROMAGNETIC SURVEY, 1982

1. INTRODUCTION

In May, 1981, a ground geophysical program began on claims

staked in response to an October 1980 land release by the

Ontario government and certain indications by Texasgulf of

a possible zinc discovery in the Kamiskotia area. Staked by

Norcen Energy Resources on behalf of the Timmins Joint Venture

Group, these 10 contiguous claims, the "STEEP GROUP", are

located in Godfrey township. Subsequently, these claims

have been transferred to Samim Canada Ltd., the current owners

and manager/operator of the joint venture activities, having

assumed Norcen's position upon its withdrawal from all

mineral exploration near the end of 1981.

Evaluation of these claims was initiated with the entire

property being gridded on east-west lines spaced 120 metres

apart. Subsequent field work included a horizontal loop

electromagnetic survey. All field work and map and data

preparation including profiling was effected using contract

facilities local to the Timmins, Ontario and Rouyn, Quebec

areas. The finished maps were then delivered to Norcen Energy

Resources and subsequently to Samim Canada Ltd. in Toronto

for interpretation.

This report contains an interpretation of these survey results

with recommendations.

THE PROPERTY

The STEEP GROUP consists of 10 claims staked in 1980 in competition with Texasgulf. Numbered P.585000...etc., these claims are recorded on the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources claim map number M-284. They are located in Lots 8, 9 and 10, Concession V, VI Godfrey township.

An outline of this claim group is indicated in Figure l of this report with all claims listed on the technical data statement in the attached Appendix "B".

3. LOCATION AND ACCESS

The approximate centre of the STEEP GROUP is located about

10.5 miles (17 kilometres) west-northwest of Timmins, Ontario

(see Figure 2). Co-ordinates of this centerpoint are 81 0 33'30" W longitude and 48 0 31'30" N latitude as indicated

on the 1:50,000 series topographic map 42A/12 "KAMISKOTIA

LAKE".

Access to the property was from Timmins by truck along highways 101 and 576 to a gravel pit opposite the turn-off

to the Kamiskotia ski hill. This road leads to the former

Genex Mine in Lot 9 , Concession 3. Accessible by 2 wheel

driye and 4 wheel drive vehicle (seasonal dependence) it

extends south for about five kilometres roughly following the

line between Lots 8 and 9. Most grid lines are directly

accessible from the Genex road. Several trails and old roads

that branch off this road facilitate skidoo travel under winter

conditions.

4. GEOLOGY

As indicated on the Ontario Division of Mines Map No. 2255 -

Robb and Jamieson townships, the STEEP GROUP is underlain

predominantly by metavolcanic rocks that wrap around the

large Kamiskotia Intrusive Complex, centered to the west.

The metavolcanics comprise both mafic and felsic rocks. The

mafics are units of mostly pillowed to massive basalts which

in the north part of the property forms a basal unit that

appears to underlie the Canadian Jamieson deposit while to

the south the mafics appear to correlate with the magnetite

bearing pillowed basalts at the Genex Mine. The felsics form a thick unit of massive to locally fragmental and

variably quartz and feldspar porphyritic rhyolite. This

unit is poorly exposed in the west central part of the claims,

Geologic strike of these units is north-northwest.

Stratigraphic tops are easterly where measured and dips are

probably steep to vertical.

Apophyses of the Kamiskotia Intrusive Complex occur only in

the western part of the STEEP claims. These consist of very

strongly carbonated, rusty weathering but generally hard

siliceous rocks that R. S. Middleton has mapped as micro-

diorite.

North and north-northwest trending diabase dikes cut all

rocks. Additionally, all rocks except the diabases are

characterized by a penetrative east trending schistosity.

This fabric may be related to that developed at the

Canadian Jamieson Mine which reportedly controls the

distribution of the ore.

Page 10: J. A. MCCANCE, P.Eng. SAMIM CANADA LTD. · Genex Mine in Lot 9, Concession 3. Accessible by 2 wheel driye and 4 wheel drive vehicle (seasonal dependence) it extends south for about

In the eastern half of the property all units are well

exposed with outcrop exceeding 50 percent. In the

northwest part of the property outcrop does not exceed

35 percent and along Godfrey Creek in the south and west

central part of the property less than 5 percent outcrop

exists.

5. PREVIOUS WORK

Most earlier work has concentrated on exploration and development near the former Canadian Jamieson Mine. More recently an area of widespread zinc mineralization east

and southeast of these claims has received significant exploration by Hollinger Mines Limited and a long-term

program of exploration, including a major drill program,

is in progress over the Godfrey 51 claim groups owned by Kidd Creek Mines Limited. Relatively little work is known in the STEEP claims.

Several old trenches, near most outcrop areas are mapped but little of this work has been reported as these claims were patented until their cancellation in 1980. A limited amount of work was reported by Hollinger Mines Limited and Dominion Gulf Limited in the area of the eastern half of the property. Results of these surveys are available at the Toronto assessment files research office as file 63.2 and 63.614 respectively. Two or three airborne magnetic and electromagnetic surveys completed on behalf of Mespi Mines Ltd. are recorded as files 63.1289 and 63.1310. Flown in a northeasterly direction by Canadian Aero Mineral Surveys in 1963 the airborne electromagnetic results identified several relatively weak or isolated anomalies in the area of the STEEP claims. Mespi completed a ground follow-up EM survey using Crone Dual frequency EM equipment and a 300 foot coil separation. No positive or strong EM responses were obtained (63.1628), yet one drill hole (DR #26 Godfrey) was completed in 1970.

Page 12: J. A. MCCANCE, P.Eng. SAMIM CANADA LTD. · Genex Mine in Lot 9, Concession 3. Accessible by 2 wheel driye and 4 wheel drive vehicle (seasonal dependence) it extends south for about

To the southeast and east of the STEEP GROUP, Hollinger

Mines Ltd. undertook a major drill program between 1968 and 1970. Approximately 9000 feet of drilling is known in this area and zinc intersections grading 7% to 15% have been reported by Hollinger. A major Ttfcram EM survey was completed in this area for Hollinger in 1974 (file 2.1550).

To the southwest of the STEEP GROUP, work by Mespi Mines on the original Godfrey 51 grid included magnetic and VLF-EM surveys and drilling. Since 1970 a major exploration program has been undertaken by Texasgulf/Kidd Creek Mines Limited on these claims and an additional 28 claims surrounding the STEEP GROUP. To date in excess of 10,000 feet of drilling is reported {files DR-33, 35, 37, 28, 39) as are ground geophysical surveys including magnetics, VLF-EM and horizontal loop EM (files 2.1726, 2.2615) and geological coverage (file 2.2898).

Further work in the area remains unknown.

6. SURVEY PROCEDURE

Exsics Exploration Limited, Timmins, Ontario under an agreement with Norcen Energy Resources Limited performed all line cutting operations and horizontal loop

electromagnetic traverses to October 1981. Additional electromagnetic traverses were completed between August and September 1982 in areas made inaccessible to Exsics by flooding along Godfrey Creek. These latter traverses

were performed by Services Exploration ENR Rouyn, Quebec under an agreement with Samim Canada Ltd.

Throughout the 1981 exploration program Norcen acted as the

manager-operator of the Timmins Project. L. A. Baldwin and J. F. Gillan shared direct supervision of this activity

until Norcen resigned as manager/operator and was replaced by Samim Canada Ltd. effective December 31st, 1981. J. A. Mccance supervised the 1982 geophysical survey and prepared this report with interpretation.

Line Cutting; The entire property was systematically gridded with east-west lines and north-south baselines and tielines placed along surveyed lot lines (see Figure 3).

Twelve picket lines varying in length from 840 metres to 1.23 kilometres were cut. All lines are spaced at 120 metre intervals along the baseline with stations established every 30 metres on survey lines.

Electromagnetic Survey; The instrument used for this survey

was an Apex Parametrics Max-Min II portable EM system. It was operated in a maximum-coupled horizontal loop mode using

a coil separation of 150 metres. Observations were recorded at two operating frequencies, 444 Hz and 1777 Hz. Corrections

for topographic effects were not completed. The instrument

receiver measures the in-phase and quadrature components of the secondary field, relative to a reference signal produced by the coplanar transmitting coil fed directly to the receiver console

through an unshielded reference cable. All receiver values

are read directly as a percentage of the primary field. The relative strengths of the real (in-phase) and imaginary

(quadrature) components are plotted as profiles for each

frequency and coil separation and are a guide to the

conductivity-width product of a buried conductor. This parameter is said to be directly related to the quantity of

conducting minerals present. In-phase or quadrature values

more negative than background generally indicate the presence of conductive material as based on generalized dike and half

plane models. A simple rule-of-thumb can be applied to such profiles to determine the approximate location and width of a conductive zone. It is cautioned however, that the form of

these EM response curves varies relative to the coil separation

used; to the geometry of the conductive source, i.e. body width,

depth and thickness, and also relative to the frequencies

involved. Consequently, by using multi-frequency and/or

multi-coil separation EM techniques in horizontal loop

measurements it is often possible to:(1) determine anomalies due to overburden effects and

to distinguish these sources from more important bedrock sources.

Page 16: J. A. MCCANCE, P.Eng. SAMIM CANADA LTD. · Genex Mine in Lot 9, Concession 3. Accessible by 2 wheel driye and 4 wheel drive vehicle (seasonal dependence) it extends south for about

- 10 -

(2) Acquire information suitable for a detail evaluation of both the lateral and vertical parameters of conductors observed as horizontal loop anomalies.

(3) Detect weaker or multi-source conductors even under difficult terrain conditions and attempt an evaluation of the associated body width, depth and conductivity-thickness parameters.

A test program report prepared and widely disseminated by J. E. Betz, consultant for APEX PARAMETRICS, the manufacturer of Max-Min II equipment, is recommended for further discussion on the system components, field performance and handling characteristics of this instrument.

In total 1764 observations were recorded with approximately

17 line kilometres of survey completed.

7. SURVEY RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION

In-phase and quadrature values are plotted in profile form on each of two maps according to the operating frequency used. These profiles plotted using a scale of l cm - ioi;' are presented on a 1:2,500 scale plan map of the grid system. Observed data points are incorporated into the overall profile lines with respective in-phase values, quadrature values and station positions identified. Prominent geographic features, observed and assumed claim post positions, claim numbers and the position of any EM conductors as located by Exsics Exploration Ltd.have been added to these plans (see map pockets).Data acquired during the 1982 survey can be identified asthe in-phase and quadrature values have been inset using a Leroy template.

Four weak conductors have been outlined by this survey.Conductor A, a three line anomaly in the northeast cornerof the grid, coincides with the location of a powerlineand is interpreted to be of cultural origin. ConductorsB and C are inferred only as these probable conductors remainincompletely surveyed because of the proximity to the claimboundaries.

Conductor D identified as a two line anomaly is very weak. Based on the in-phase response at low frequency this feature is interpreted to be a bedrock conductor. It is also possible that conductor D may be due solely to coil misalignments that occurred between outcrop areas on lines 600N and 720N.

Other conductive zones are inferred to be located in theWest 1/2 Lot 9 on lines 120N and 240N and in the northcentral part of the claim group, an area of gabbroic intrusion.

Page 18: J. A. MCCANCE, P.Eng. SAMIM CANADA LTD. · Genex Mine in Lot 9, Concession 3. Accessible by 2 wheel driye and 4 wheel drive vehicle (seasonal dependence) it extends south for about

- 12 -

On lines 120N and 24ON a moderate quadrature predominent anomaly can be identified in the area of Godfrey Creek. It remains equally permissible that the source of this feature can be interpreted as reflecting variable overburden conditions and the presence of a buried subcrop near 700W on line 120N or sulphides associated with a shear zone as inferred from magnetic observations over this grid. This shearing, if present, trends southwesterly, parallel to Godfrey Creek and presents a similarity in setting to the Steep Lake breccia pipe further to the southwest.

Page 19: J. A. MCCANCE, P.Eng. SAMIM CANADA LTD. · Genex Mine in Lot 9, Concession 3. Accessible by 2 wheel driye and 4 wheel drive vehicle (seasonal dependence) it extends south for about

- 13 -

8. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

There are no obvious EM targets on these claims. However,

the close proximity and similar stratigraphy to the

Canadian Jamieson deposit to the north and the similarity in setting of the west and southwest parts of the property

to the Steep Lake breccia pipe, located further southwest, suggest that more detailed work is warrented.

Mineralization may not be massive or continuous enough to

constitute a conductor but it is recognized that the Canadian Jamieson orebodies, even though considered a non- conductive ore zone, do show up as very strong anomalies

using IP techniques.

It is recommended that limited IP traverses be completed

in the area of the gabbro intrusive on lines 960N and

1080N. IP traverses should also be completed on lines 120N, 240N and 360N in the vicinity of Godfrey Creek as a test for the presence of sulphide mineralization in this

area.
