A Note From Geri.Seventy-five years old, and still going strong! This past year, Inter-Varsity Canada celebrated 75 years ofGod’s faithfulness, seeing His work transforming youth, students and graduates into fully committed followers ofJesus Christ! Everywhere I look, I see evidence of God’smovement in and among us, across our various ministries.

■ God is calling together an incredible staff team that I havethe privilege of leading, and He is positioning us to make adifference in the lives of youth, students, and graduates foryears to come. In 2004, we brought all of our staff togetherutilizing the teaching of Rikk Watts, under the theme“Community of the Spirit, Witnesses to the World.”

■ Ministry innovation is happening! I am seeing staff buy intoour mission of transformation, and finding new and creativeways to work that are attractive and relevant to today’syouth. Some of our high school groups have doubled innumber because staff and student leaders are committed tothinking outside the box.

■ More and more students are getting excited about prayer andstudying the Bible! In addition to seeing a renewed interest inmanuscript Bible study, we also see that students are seekingadditional training in prayer and evangelistic outreach.

Page 4: iv ar 05 4 · Seventy-five years old, and still going strong! This past year, Inter-Varsity Canada celebrated 75 years of God’s faithfulness, seeing His work transforming youth,

■ As we actively move forward in our commitment to being witnessing communities, unbelievers and those new to their faith are becoming increasingly attracted to andinvolved in our campus groups. We are excited to see many coming to faith in Jesus Christ!

■ Our ministry is truly becoming multi-ethnic! We have a booming ministry amonginternational students and our relationship with aboriginal students has grownsignificantly. We also are excited with our growing ministry to young people who aresecond generation Canadians.

■ A feature of this year’s celebrations included seeing many of our past and presentstaff, campers and students. We also formally recognized many alumni who havemade a difference to the work of Inter-Varsity over the years. One such friend and ourvery first staff member, Cathie Nicoll, went home this year to be with the Lord. Cathielived a life fully committed to following Jesus, loving and serving students and campershere in Canada and abroad.

■ Inter-Varsity is blessed with committed partners who faithfully pray for our ministry, andselflessly give financially so that the message of Jesus can go forward in Canada, and beyond.

Today, perhaps more than ever before, students are open to the life-changing messageof Jesus. We at Inter-Varsity intend to be there to share that message on the campuses,at camps, and in communities across Canada. I am looking forward to what God willcontinue to do in the days ahead.

Sincerely,

Geri Rodman

Pioneer Camps: “A Place to Be Yourself ”

Some of the challenges facing youth today are daunting to say the least. Unsafeenvironments, single parent families, pressure to conform, school and family issues andthe list goes on. Pioneer Camps offer something different: a safe and real environmentaccessible to kids from all backgrounds. This is a place where God becomes alive and kidsare able to talk about some of life’s harder questions.

“I am excited about Pioneer Camps as a fun and safe place where youth are guided intoadventure and young adults into servant leadership.” —Chris Wickham, Pioneer Pacific Camp

Developing Authentic

Relationships:

During the summer of 2004, Pioneer Camps openedtheir doors to over 4,703 campers between the ages 6-16. Our dedicated and enthusiastic staff used the toolsof camping, God’s outdoors, and His gift of celebrationto help build authentic relationships and plant thebeginning seeds of faith in our campers. This year, weare busy getting ready to host another group of youngpeople whose lives we hope to impact and transform.

“There is something special that happens when you bring boys [andgirls] into God’s creation and into an environment where they are freeof some of the pressures they experience at home and school.””

—Mark Evans, Ontario Pioneer Boys’ Camp Director

INTER-SCHOOL CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP

Campuses: An Important Mission Field

Everyone needs a place to go, a place that issafe – a place to find out who you are andyour purpose in life. This year, Inter-Varsityministered to both students and teachers onhigh school campuses across Canada.Encouraged to share and pray, Inter-SchoolChristian Fellowship provided students witha safe haven to deal with the toughquestions that arise during the ‘identityyears’. They were challenged toacknowledge and demonstrate their faith inpractical ways within the school campuswalls, among their peers, and outside withtheir families and communities. Our highschool students are responding to creativeministry innovations, and some of ourgroups have doubled in size this year.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERS IT IES

On the University Campus: Life in the Fast Lane

Colleges and universities are a real mission field. We understand thatgetting good marks isn’t enough to sustain students’ spirits. Today’sstudents are dealing with huge pressures to conform in an ever-growing,desensitized environment. Last year, Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowshipworked on over 70 campuses across Canada encouraging students toquestion and grow in their understanding and application of God’s truth. We challenged them to step outside their comfort zones, to bepassionate for God and view their campuses as the mission field to whichGod has called them. While we recognize that our students are works-in-progress and at various places in their journeys of faith, we are excited tonotice a marked increase in commitment to Bible study and prayer.

“Everyone needs a place to go where they can relax and enjoy their faith.Inter-Varsity has rejuvenated my faith life.” —Third year university student

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT MINISTR IES

Building Witnessing Communities Internationally

Approximately 65,000 students from around the globe attend Canadiancolleges and universities and this past year Inter-Varsity had ISM groupson campuses comprising at least one-third of the international students. The International Friendship Partner Program connected students withInter-Varsity staff on a myriad of levels. Arranging for ESL classes, havinga friendly face meet a new student upon their arrival at the airport, orproviding one-on-one discipleship, are just a few of the facets of thisministry. And, international students are continuing to respond to thelove of Jesus that they encounter in ISM across Canada.

“For the last twenty-three years, I’ve been privileged to engage in thelives of students who went back to their countries, transformed andcommitted to building the Kingdom of God. Our ministry meets a realneed and it is inspiring to see these students come to faith, and to heartheir stories of transformation.” —Ian Elliot, International Student Ministries

“I am committed to seeing Inter-Varsity positively impact Canada’syouth, students and graduates in all their ethnic diversity. I want to seeInter-Varsity undergo a profound organizational transformation into afully multi-ethnic ministry, organization and fellowship.”—Donna Dong, Multi-Ethnic/Multi-Cultural Ministries

GRADUATE STUDENT AND FACULTY MINISTR IES

Building ConnectionsThroughout this last year, Inter-Varsity’s Graduate Student and Faculty Ministriesbrought together many new and existing groups of graduate students and facultywith a purpose of building connectiveness. Ministry staff actively focused onfostering new relationships while continually striving to build personal growth andcorporate witness on Canadian campuses. And we have seen a dramatic increaseof 100 more graduate students and 200 more faculty this year.

“We love God’s people who inhabit the universities of this world. It is our hopethat in the future there will be even more communities and networks of graduatestudents and faculty building the Kingdom of God in their settings.”—Bob and Debbie Clark, Graduate Students and Faculty Ministry

NURSES CHRIST IAN FELLOWSHIP

A Special Kind of VocationInter-Varsity’s Nurses Christian Fellowship seeks to help nurses and nursingstudents know Christ in addition to acting as a support to individuals working in a high-pressure health-care environment. Over the year, a significant part of thisministry has been to encourage nurses in their vocational commitment withinGod’s Kingdom through regular fellowship and prayer.

Steps to the FutureInter-Varsity’s leadership has identified three strategic priorities over the next ten yearswhich, we believe, will be key to developing our mission of seeing God transformlives. Part of our growth as an organization will be to expand our internal systems, human and financial resources as we steward the gifts that God provides.

Focusing on the Future: The Vision

1. Building Witnessing Communities: Inter-Varsity wants to build witnessingcommunities for Jesus Christ that will impact our world in a real and tangible way.We want to be welcoming, inclusive and fun while showing the world that God isauthentic. We want our communities to be shaped by God’s Word, a commitmentto pray, an eagerness to share faith and marked by a diversity that includes believersand seekers from every walk of life.

2. Developing Servant Leaders: We desire to have a surplus of qualified, competentleaders who are eager and passionate to personify a culture of servant leadership. Ourdesire is for our staff and volunteers to develop an understanding of their giftednessand combine it with a strong desire to contribute as God leads, in changing lives.

3. Steward the Inter-Varsity Mission: We are blessed and we want to bless others. We desire to be good stewards of the gifts we are given, reflecting well on ourrelationship with our financial partners. We want to provide camp with a setting thatspeaks to excellence in a leadership environment.

Page 10: iv ar 05 4 · Seventy-five years old, and still going strong! This past year, Inter-Varsity Canada celebrated 75 years of God’s faithfulness, seeing His work transforming youth,

Taking the Vision Forward

We know that it will take several years to affect and successfullyimplement these strategic priorities, and we are committed to movingforward. To do so, we’ve identified five key strategic initiatives whichwill be our starting point toward the accomplishment of these priorities:

1. Staff RecruitmentFor Inter-Varsity to move forward, significantly impacting more youth, students and graduates, we know that we will need more people onour team. Finding those people whom God is calling to join us in thismission will be an absolute priority.

2. Staff DevelopmentOur staff have told us that they want to be even better equipped tocarry out the roles to which they have been called and appointed. And since they are, by far, our greatest resource, apart from Jesushimself, we want to ensure that they are given the most current, andrelevant training to carry out their responsibilities. Additionally, builtinto this training will be consistency demonstrated through corecompetencies among all staff in all ministries across Canada.

3. Fund Development & MarketingAs the movement grows, fund development and marketing willbecome increasingly more important. Inter-Varsity must designstrategies to attract younger financial partners, while continuing to

honor and reinforce relationships with our faithful partnerswho have stood with us over the last 75 years. We believewe have a story to tell. Our dream is that every Christianhousehold in Canada will know that story, and how we fitinto the broader Kingdom of God.

4. Alumni DevelopmentInter-Varsity has a rich legacy of individuals whose lives have beeninfluenced in some way by our ministry. We want to do a better job ofkeeping in touch with our alumni, while keeping them apprised of ourministry and its developments. We want to celebrate who they are,and encourage them to be more involved, to pray and asopportunities arise, to volunteer.

5. Camp DevelopmentPioneer Camps across Canada are an integral part of Inter-Varsity’sministry. Countless individuals here and beyond our borders trace theirspiritual journey through one of our camps. We want to ensure thatcamp programs are relevant and engaging all segments of our society.Crucial to this goal is ensuring campers can enjoy an enhancedprogram through the use of safe and state-of-the-art facilities. Over thenext several years each of our camps will require a significant face-lift,and we are putting plans in place now to see that happen.

Although total revenue exceeded total expenses in 2005, there is anaccumulated deficit of $22,214 in operations. A decline in camper fees dueto lower enrollment at Pioneer Camps contributed to this deficit. Budgetcorrections and marketing plans are in place to respond to this challenge.
