DESCRIPTION
A short summary of my academic works.TRANSCRIPT
I am Itsaso Altuna, currently Industrial Design and Product Development Engineering student at Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Basque Country.
As a designer, I have learned how to work in dif ferent disciplines as product
development/design or poster design. Due to my education, I am able to work on dif ferent product
development projects, on the ones that demand technical skills and on those that require an
designer soul for an aesthetic work.
Nowadays I am focused on product development, in a few years I wish I will be on a
Industrial Design Master Graduate, focused on Graphic Design or Digital Design and Animation. In
the future, I want my life, both personal and professional, to be nothing but colour.
ABOUT ME
If I wasn't an design student I know I would be related to design somehow, maybe to clothes design and fashion.
My most precious item is my sewing machine, it can stop time and turn ideas into real.
I also love knit ting, I f ind it relaxing and fun, it is like the life itself, a tiny amount of things knot ted
together to create something great.
HOW DO I WORK?I have been taught a methodology that can
lead almost every single project to the top.
I have also learned many other creativity tools and product improvement methodologies.
But anyway, I am very grateful to my teachers
and University to choose to teach this one as main tool for the projects.

CONTENT
This is a short workshop that mainly includes shape and aesthetic development.
The formulation of the exercise was to take the brand and car images given and to create a pair of headphones inspiring on the car.
It was not necessary to use the full methodology explained before since no technical issues were required.
The aim of the workshop was to be able to
synthesize the shapes into some headphones, create a render using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe
Photoshop and to create a poster to properly show our f inished work.
VOLVO INSPIRED HEADPHONES
Above this text, there can be seen the inspiration photos and brand, Volvo, and a stencil with the main shapes of a pair of headphones. Both given on the exercise formulation.
Handmade sketches of the possible headphones.
On the right of this lines the chosen design.
Handmade coloured sketches of the chosed design.
Fast test of colours and render approximation.

Here the f inished Photoshop render and poster.
Some of the requirements on the exercise were to represent dif ferent materials and lighting
ef fects, as shadows and bright points.
This is an exercise to create a product starting from the user, there were many dif ferent pictures
of people to choose. The second step was to create an universe of images that could be
related to the selected user.
This pictures of objects or places had to tell about personality and style, so they could be used as inspiration board to create the required watch.
In this short workshop was also required a poster to show the f inal render. The poster was
supposed to be like and advertisement or
appealing presentation.
No technical details were required, but anyway, it was a very adequate exercise to
show the Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop skills.
WATCH
As exercise formulation there
were many possible users given, as It seemed to me that this user was very dif ferent to me
I tought it could be a nice challenge to create a watch for her.
Below the universe of objects that could be related to her.
I created a stencil to help myself to sketch some designs for the watch.
One of the aims of the exercise was that the designs had to be inspired somehow on the created universe. Shapes, materials, colours... all
those qualities had to inspire the f inal design.
On the right the is the f inal poster of the watch made
using Adobe Illustrator and
Adobe Photoshop sof tware tools.

Below this lines the f inished product poster.
I wanted to show the watch as ref ined and elegant, since the proposed user seemed like that
and the designed product was supposed to f it perfectly.
I chosed to at tach the sentence “time is the only thing that never reminds” as I deeply believe
that time is valuable and that it shouldn’t be wasted.
This project shows the full process of redesign of the Fagor SP-1805 AC hairdryer redesign.
The aesthetical aim was to redesign the outside housing in order to create an hairdryer that would f it perfectly an user given.
The new user given to us was a young active and colourful woman. As I really like
colourful design I felt very commit ted with the hairdryer.
This aesthetical change results in many
engineering issues, such as material research, injection process and calculus, CAD-CAM 3D
modelling and blueprints.
The technical challenge was to change the engine from an AC current engine to a DC current
one. Decide which elements were needed, how to place them on the product and the required calculus to complete the challenge was,
personally, thrilling and electrifying.
All the work and time dedicated to this project would have been unsuccessful without my team
partners.
FAGOR SP-1805 AC HAIRDRYER REDESIGN
The positioning of this project was “Life it”.
Below this lines is the Fagor hairdryer that was proposed to redesign. Above, there are some pictures of the user that would use the product. Young and colourful, bright and full of live.
There were also given some products as “universe”, in order to inspire shapes, colours and possible materials.
During the formal research, as the positioning was
so open and full of possibilities we developed a bunch
of sketches, all bold propositions.
We ended on three propositions for the “Life it”
hairdryer, f inally we chosed the blue hairdryer since it was the one that gave the chance to be creative both on the aesthetical en technical researches.

As mentioned before, the aesthetical change of the housing entailed many other engineering researches.
We deeply studied the materials the original
hairdryer was made from so we were able to decide if they were adequate to the new design. As geometry was changed we also determined
the process to create the new housing, actually we f inally decided to do it using plastic injection,
and because of that decision we also calculated the injection process.
They are many f ields that require blueprints, such as the prototype (on the right) or the volumetric calculus for the injection process. The hairdryer was modelled on CAD-CAM 3D sof tware, Solidworks, and the blueprints were
obtained using Autodesk Autocad Mechanical.
Project partners: Maitane Altzuguren and Maitane García.
As said before, the main requirement of the technical part of the redesign was to change the AC engine to a DC engine.
The f irst step was to analyze and identify the f irst circuit. Identify each element and the connections. Once this was done, we had to ideate the new DC current circuit.
It was a amazing and technically beautiful puzzle to calculate the requirements of each element.

This project locates on the Virgen Blanca square in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The aim of the exercise is to redesign the YOR bench below into a new shaped bench that would f it the square.
As the scenario was so specif ic, the soul of Vitoria-Gasteiz had to be analyzed. About one half
of the project did was to identify correctly the scenario.
The redesign of this project was a teamwork.
MÉLANGE BENCH
As Vitoria-Gasteiz was chosen for this project, we started our research analyzing the city, its personality, aesthetics and the 2012 Green City Award. Af ter synthetize this data, we create a positioning for our bench, this way both, the bench and the city, with be harmonious.
Before starting with the technical issues we developed the three pre-projects until 80%, so shape, main materials, production process sketch and use were decided yet.
The Mélange Bench was chosen because it was the most realistic in order to calculate production and costing and for the physical analysis.
The technical analysis on this bench were very accurate to reality.
The material provider, costs, physical analysis, blueprints, manufacturing process.... were all decided.
Here on the lef t we can see come calculus of physics, so we could see whether or not it could break.
Also on the lef t there are some blueprints miniatures. As the bench has many dif ferent pieces, the blueprints were very required.
Project partners: Nagore Álvarez, Ander Arregi, Eder Gómez and Idoia Urain.
The Mélange bench was represented on CAD-CAM sof tware Solidworks.
On the right there are the front and back sides renders. On the back the bike parks are quite notorious, but as the bench had to get along the personality of Vitoria-Gasteiz itself, the design required the bike park.
The bench was nice and clean shaped, but even the formal aesthetics, it had the perfect disposition to create intimate spaces on the city.

The 24h of Innovation is a contest performed
in the ESTIA University in Bayonne. It has a quite unusual and exciting procedure: this contest hosts many dif ferent enterprises that propose real tasks, in a 24 hours time teams of students try to reach
a solution, they present the new idea or product and there is announced a winner.
As Mondragon University students we were encouraged to go to Bayonne and take part on
the 24h of Innovation because a creative and problem solving skilled prof ile is very adequate to this contest.
We developed the Be Yeux product, a lit tle
accessory for the bike that helped the cyclist to be seen and safer.
Project partners: Enara Airrezabala, Ander Arregi, Maitane García, Nere Karrera, Nerea Lopez,
Garazi Mitxelena,David Santamaría, Maite
Santamaría and William Peel.
We are so grateful to William, ESTIA student, for beeing our host, traductor and partner.
BE YEUX
As mentioned before our project was to create something that would help bikers to keep safe when they are on the road, hosted by AZIMUT company.
We formed a team of nine Mondragon University Design students and an ESTIA University Engineering student. Since almost all knew each other and we were deeply thaught on the same methodology, we decided to apply it as usual.
Finally, we created the Be Yeux product idea, lsince it was just a 24h time contest we would have found too many dif f iculties developing it completely.
We are so grateful to a teacher of ESTIA
who spent some minutes as our mentor because he helped us very so much just
telling us that with an idea as good as ours we
were just wasting time trying to improve more, that we had to show it as amazing it was.
So thanks to hard team work we were able to show a CAD-CAM 3D model (on its own and on a bike), the story board and way to use, a prototype and what almost seem a choreo-graphy on the stage. We all are very proud of winning 2nd prize on our f irst time on the 24h of Innovation ESTIA.

The San Sebastian Film Festival opens a
worldwide open contest to chose the Festival
representative images on its dif ferent categories.
We were encouraged to take part on the competition in whatever category we wanted to, as design students we had already been taught enough skills to create a good entry.
As a personal challenge I wanted to create a poster that no necessarily had to use a typography, since I didn't want any issue with copyright. A combination of this thought and my personal inclination to pop art, I f inally came out with the poster en the right.

The Maier Group propose every two years a colour and trim contest, in which designers and students can participate.
The task to complete is to create an inspiration board, a material board and to colour some car
stencils. In this colour and trim exercise the aim is to integrate on the car paintings the chosen materials
and to transmit the sensation explained on the
inspiration board.
My point was that a car is something between a
best friend and the f irst crush, and those feelings are always more stronger on summer, so I decided to
use summer colours and textures as inspiration to
colour the car.
