What is a phrase?????????????

A phrase is a group of words that is used as a single part of speech and does not contain a verb and its subject.

There are many types of phrases: prepositional phrases, participial phrases, gerund phrases, infinitive phrases, and appositive phrases.

Don’t worry…at this stage

you don’t have to be

able to identify each

kind of phrase…

Instead, you just need to know that if you see a group of related words without both a subject and verb, then a phrase does exist!

What is a prepositional phrase?

A prepositional phrase is a group of words consisting of a preposition, a noun or pronoun that serves as the object of the preposition, and any modifiers of that object.

What is a participial phrase?

A participial phrase consists of a participle (a verb form that can be used as an adjective) and all the words related to the participal.

An appositive phrase consists of an appositive (a noun or pronoun placed beside another noun or pronoun to identify or explain it) and all its modifiers.
