ITINERANNIA. A NETWORK OF WALKING ROUTES

Itinerànnia takes us from the mountains to the sea,

and in the process runs through the main attractions

of our counties where all manner of services are at hand.

Itinerànnia is the result of a combined effort of three counties

that have designed an innovative resource in our country.

With this network of walking routes their possibilities

for widening the appeal of these threezones

have multiplied which are the key of Girona’s tourism industry:

-The sun and beaches of the Costra Brava during the summer.

-The winter activities in the snow of the Pyrenees

-The nature and heritage attractions offered

by the medieval villages of the Pre-Pyrenees

Page 5: ITINERANNIA

THE GOAL

To create the first footpath network as a road network. You can go everywhere

you want from every place using the signing you will find all over the paths.

Create a network of paths and trails joining the major resources,

tourist services and municipalities,

using historic roads in the county to create packages

to spread tourism throughout the territory along the whole year

TO CREATE THE NETWORK FOOTPATH IN THE RIPOLLES WE HAVE WORK WITH

THE FIVE LOCAL GROUPS OF EXCURSIONISTS.

WE THINK THEY HAVE A GREAT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE RIPOLLES COUNTY AND THEIR HISTORICAL

FOOTPATH

TO CREATE THE NETWORK FOOTPATH IN THE THREE COUNTIES (Ripollès, Garrotxa and Alt Empordà)

WE HAVE USED COMMON CRITERION TO CHOOSE THOSE FOOTPATH INCLUDING THEM ON

THE FOOTPATH NETWORK CALLED ITINERANNIA.

THEY PASS THROUGH HISTORICAL FOOTHPATH, NATURAL RESOURCES,

CULTURAL RESOURCES, TOURIST SERVICES

RIPOLLES FROM BEGINNING TO END 5 days, 4 nights Medium ITINERÀNNIA is a network of hiking trails that stretches over 2500 kilometres. ITINERÀNNIA has restored former transport routes between villages in order to provide access to any spot, down to the tiniest of enclaves. The network is stimulated by the natural and cultural assets of three areas, the main attractions for people visiting our lands. It allows you to walk from the Pyrenees to the sea and from the sea to the Pyrenees.

While it's possible to go almost anywhere by car, you can now also do so on foot. Just like a road network, through Itinerànnia you will be able to explore the most emblematic sites of our lands and discover breathtakingly beautiful spots.

All the hiking trails that belong to the Itinerànnia network are marked with a yellow horizontal signpost (painted on the path). The vertical signposts at crossroads indicate the 4 closest towns or villages in each direction, from the closest to the farthest. The distance is shown in time (6 hours at the most).

This offer is an itinerary that crosses some of the paths of the network. Ripollès is a region in the Pyrenees that is formed by three valleys: Camprodon, Ribes and Lower Ripollès. Summits such as Puigmal and Bastiments which soar up to around 3000 m watch over the 19 towns and villages dotted over this land, the majority of which originate from medieval times. The valleys, rivers, mountains and charming villages here are sure to enrapture, whether you are walking, climbing, skiing, fishing or simply relaxing.

The history of Ripollès is closely linked to the birth of Old Catalonia, as it was Wilfred the Hairy who began the reunification of Catalan territory in these regions during the 10th century. It is due to this that Ripollès is home to one of the largest concentrations of Romanesque art in Europe, with monasteries such as Ripoll, Sant Joan de les Abadesses and Camprodon, and churches such as Beget, Molló, Llanars, Queralbs, Dòrria, Toses and Sant Pere de Montgrony. In fact, the latter is one of the backdrops of one of Catalonia's most popular legends, that of count Arnau. In addition to art, history and legends, Ripollès boasts a wealth of breathtakingly beautiful natural spots: Núria Valley, the birth of the river Ter, and over 32,000 ha of protected areas of natural interest, all of which can be found within the Natura 2000 network, which is recognised on a European level.

Tourism has existed in Camprodon since the early 19th century, with the arrival of the first hikers and important figures from the Barcelona bourgeoisie.

The Pont Nou bridge in Camprodon dates back to the end of the 12 c., and features a huge central arch over the river Ter, with smaller openings on the sides. At the end of the bridge is the Porta de la Cerdanya gate, which was the access point to the town. The key feature of the Sant Pere monastery is its 10th c. church

It starts in Ribes de Freser and travels vertically over 1000 m. The county of La Garrotxa is in theextreme east of the Pyrenees andcovers an area of 735 km2, split into21 municipalities.

It is the most easterly mountain countyand the one with the lowest averagealtitude: most of its surface is less than600m above sea level and the highestparts are not above 1,600m,differentiating it from the rest of themountain counties. La Garrotxa is one of the best places for bike touring in Catalonia. Olot is a key location, since it is necessary topass through it to connect the Via Verda del Ferro with the Via Verda del Carrilet. In fact, it is the recommendedstarting point for the Via Verda del Carrilet, since a good section of the route to Girona is downhill.

Olot also has several bike touring routes - not signposted - around the city, and Besalú has the Anella Verda(Green Ring), a wide pathway on the banks of the river Fluvià that is suitable for cycling along.

WALKING THROUGH THE VALLEY 3 days, 2 nights Medium ITINERÀNNIA is a network of hiking trails that stretches over 2500 kilometres.

Garrotxa is located to the north of Catalonia, in the upper basin of the river Fluvià, in the headwaters of the La Muga and the torrents of the rivers Amer and Llémena.

The municipality of La Vall d'en Bas constitutes a first-rate geographical area with breathtaking landscapes. Hillocks and jagged ridges, such as Cabrera, Els Llancers, Freixaneda and Puigsacalm, surround meadows and beech, holm oak and oak groves right up to the Plana d'en Bas plain. This plain boasts some of the most fertile soil in Catalonia. At the same time, a multitude of river torrents and brooks gently flow through the plain, opening out into the river Fluvià, which is formed by the water rushing down from the Els Falgars peaks.

The Puigsacalm and the Santa Magdalena massif shape one of the most distinctive silhouettes in the area. From their peaks, you can marvel at the spectacular views over a good deal of Catalonia.

The concentration of farmland is distributed between farmers in a plot system. The creation of a farming cooperative in the early 1970s provided a considerable drive for farming activity in the area and created the current route of roads that connect all the villages and communities in the area.

L’ ALT EMPORDÀ

Alt Empordà is a region with a great cultural and landscape wealth, marked by its geographic location in the most northeastern area of the Iberian Peninsula, has converted it into an area of passage (persons, goods, etc.). Its natural boundaries are the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean Sea, and the plains of the Empordà that joins it with the Baix Empordà and the area of Alta Garrotxa.

All of these aspects make the landscape of Alt Empordà a unique place that joins the sea and the mountains that along with the north wind, have marked the culture, gastronomy, traditional trades and the mood of the town that has been established for thousands of years.

The dolmens and menhirs of the area of Albera and Cap de Creus stand out as the most notable places of our history, as well as the Greco-Roman remains of Empúries and the Citadel of Roses. From this medieval era, we find Romanic churches, the monastery of Vilabertran and of Sant Pere de Rodes, the latter being the greatest exponent. Of later era, we have the gothic style Cathedral of Castelló d’Empúries, the fortification of Sant Ferran in Figueres and some modernist buildings, until reaching our times with the genius of Salvador Dalí and this Theater Museum of Figueres and house in Portlligat.

But all of these elements cannot be understood without the Emporda landscape, a good part of which is protected: the Natural Park of Aiguamolls del Empordà, Cap de Creus, the Natural Spot of Albera and the area of Basecoat. Another important component of the Alt Empordà is the gastronomy of the sea and mountain, the fish “suquet”, goose with turnips, “brunyols” of Empordà, and notable products like the Emporda Denomination of Origin wines, anchovies from L’Escala, oil from the presses of the region, sweet sausages, etc.

All of these aspects make the Alt Empordà an embracing land ready to receive you. THE WEATHER The climate of the Alt Empordà is Mediterranean type. The distribution of the rainfalls is irregular, with an annual scanty total. Referring, the temperatures, winter is moderated and summer warm. The average temperatures during winter is about 10ºC , whereas in summer is about 37 º C. SITUATION The Alt Empordà belongs to the region of Girona. In addition, it is the one that is more in the northern part to the limit between the Spanish and French border. The Alt Empordà has a very good acces to come: by road, railroad, sea and air.

3 NATURAL PARKS AND OTHER NATURAL PLACES

Alt Empordà is an extraordinary area in terms of natural heritage. We should highlight that it is the only region within Catalonia with three classified natural areas in just 100 km²: the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà (wetland), the Cap de Creus and the L'Albera mountain range.

- NATURAL PARK : “ELS AIGUAMOLLS DE L’EMPORDÀ” This is the second wetland area in Catalonia. It is made up by a number of ponds, swamps and flood plains in the confluence of the rivers Muga and Fluvià. It constitutes a privileged habitat for fauna and especially for wetland birds. In 1983, the place was declared a National Interest Natural Site in terms of its wide-ranging zoological and botanic reserves. It covers an area of 4866 ha . The towns and villages within the influence area of the park are: L'Armentera, Castelló d'Empúries, L'Escala, Palau-saverdera, Pau, Pedret i Marzà, Peralada, Roses and Sant Pere Pescador.

Tourist office “El Cortalet” Castelló d’Empúries Ctra. de Sant Pere Pescador. Guided tours .Tel. 972 454 222

- NATURAL PARK : EL CAP DE CREUS It constitutes the last spur of the Pyrenees and the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. The coast is rough and rugged with impressive cliffs and isolated coves. The Cap de Creus Natural Park was created in 1998 and protects the Cap de Creus peninsula and its marine environment. It constitutes the first natural park in the country to cover both sea and land and stretches over 13,886 ha. The land area includes three natural sites of national interest (PNIN): the Cap Gros-Cap de Creus in the north; the Punta Falconera-Cap Norfeu in the south and the Rodes mountain range in the west. The towns and villages within the influence area of the park are: Cadaqués, Llançà, Palau-saverdera, Pau, El Port de la Selva, Roses, La Selva de Mar and Vilajuïga.

- NATURAL PARK : L’ ALBERA This natural site is located on the southern slope of the L'Albera massif and is comprised of two very different areas: the western part in the Requesens-Baussitges area which features Central European vegetation, with wet beech woods and oak groves; and the eastern part in the Sant Quirze de Colera area which is more Mediterranean, featuring a vegetation of cork oak and undergrowth, inhabited by the last colonies of the Mediterranean tortoise. The Site was created in 1986 and covers an area of 4108 ha . It stands within the municipal areas of La Jonquera, Espolla and Rabós. Its areas of influence are the towns and villages of Llançà, Colera, Portbou, Cantallops, Vilamaniscle and Garriguella.

Tourist office situated in Espolla - C/ Mossèn Amadeu Sudria, n. 3. Tel. 972 545 079

- MORE NATURAL PLACES … Pein les Salines. Transborder massif of 4107 hectares, located in the towns of Maçanet de Cabrenys, Agullana, La Vajol and Albanyà. The massif has a large variety of forest habitats, mainly conifer forests (pines, firs) and mountain Holm oaks, as well as deciduous trees (beeches and oaks,). Among the fauna stands out the abundance of mammals (wild boars, foxes), as well as the fowl: predators (sparrow hawks, kestrels) forest birds (blackbirds, woodpeckers). The great density of monumental trees, shrines and sanctuaries is also notable.

Pein Alta Garrotxa Extensive scarcely populated pre-Pyrenean area, dominated by oaks and Holm oaks. Recreational activities like hiking and rural tourism live alongside traditional activities of the local population. It has a great cultural heritage, legacy of its agriculture and livestock past: country manors, shrines, coalmines, etc. River Fluvià The river is the symbol of the Emporda plain. Along with the Muga, they have shaped the Emporda plain with their supply of sedimentary materials. Born in the region of La Garrotxa, the Fluvià reaches the area in its final section, with the highest level of all rivers that reach the region. The riverbank forests are well conserved (ashes, poplars, etc...) and its tranquil waters meander throughout the plain. The river birds and the recent recovery of the otter, that currently inhabits the entire fluvial course, stand out. The river is also a place for fun, and recreational fishing cannot be left out. It its final section, in Sant Pere Pescador, it is navigable and water sports such as surfing, sailing and kayaking are practiced. River Manol River that starts in Lliurona, in the Alta Garrotxa of Empordà and is the main tributary of the Muga.It has a path of some 40 kilometers, passing through many towns, from Albanyà to its statuary in Vilanova de la Muga. It is characterized by the sever droughts that it suffers in the summer and the many floods during the rainy season, upon receiving numerous torrents.

Page 76: ITINERANNIA

www.empordaturisme.com 7

In its passage through some towns it creates pits, ravines and fluvial terraces used by the local population for recreation, as in the case of the Park of El Manol in the town of Vilafant, where hiking may be practiced on a signed route. There is a mountain bike track as well.

River Muga River that drains to the north of Alt Empordà, from where it starts in Bassegoda and a little after enters in Albanyà. Its valley is surrounded by mountains in its first section, later it is ideal for practicing river fishing in any of its multiple mouths. It is one of the largest water supplies for the reservoir of Boadella, and upon reaching the plain, waters the fertile flat lands as it passes through Pont de Molins, Peralada and Castelló d'Empúries. Its final section flows into the Mediterranean, creating a border between Aiguamolls del Empordà and Empuriabrava, where a track has been made for mountain biking or walking to and from Castelló d'Empúries.

Pantà de Boadella

Reservoir built in the 60’s for energy production, supplying water to Figueres and the watering systems of the plain. It has also become a meeting place for the practice of water sports, as well recreation, hiking and mountain biking.

We can find a great variety of beaches and coves along the Alt Empordà coastline: from mile-long beaches on the plain, in Sant Martí d'Empúries, Sant Pere Pescador and Castelló d'Empúries, to hidden-away, rocky coves in the Cap de Creus peninsula and the north coast (Roses, Cadaqués, El Port de la Selva, Llançà, Colera and Portbou) or the more lively, sandy beaches at Roses, Empuriabrava and L'Escala. There is a whole range of possibilities for us to choose how we would like to enjoy the clean blue Mediterranean, full of life, in this spot of northern Costa Brava:

- Portbou

Today it is one of the few tourist resorts on the Costa Brava where it is still possible to enjoy a certain degree of calm and tranquillity. Although some of its buildings betray at the present time a certain state of neglect, Portbou has been able to maintain a charm that captivates the visitor. The beaches and coves, the Rambla and the promenade, the cemetery suspended on the hilltop above the sea and Dani Karavan's "Passagen" monument in memory of the philosopher Walter Benjamin, the railway sidings, the neo-Gothic church and the harbour.... and the Tramonatana wind to imprint its character on the whole scene.

- Llançà

It is found in the middle of an area with a great wealth of natural and ecological spaces, as well as surrounded by significant elements of the cultural heritage that go from the megalithic (with prehistoric remains and dolmens), to major remains of the pre-Romanic architecture and with the imposing structure of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. As for modern art, Llançà houses an important watercolor museum: the Martínez Lozano Foundation. The coast is not too rough, with a series of cliffs and covers that offer landscapes of great beauty, with beaches like Cap de Ras, Canyelles, Grifeu, L’Argilera, el Port, Carboneres, la Farella and Cau del Llop. - Port de la Selva

Port de la Selva is a Catalan village, located at the northeast corner of Spain. Within this environment there is a wealth of scenery which combines the blue Mediterranean, the green of the vineyards and, getting up the sea, mountains carved by time with notable peaks height as Sant Salvador (671 m) and Puig Queralbs (621 m). The Cap de Creus, the last foothills of the Pyrenees, where lies our town, has a rugged coastline with morphology resulting from the erosive action of wind and sea, with many river valleys flooded by the sea coast which cause an articulated with picturesque coves , heads high and steep promontories, and several islands. L'any 1998 es va crear el Parc Natural de Cap de Creus, que protegeix poc més del 90% del terme municipal. In 1998 he created the Natural Park of Cap de Creus, which protects a little over 90% of the municipality. Dins d'aquest àmbit, a més d'espais d'alt interès natural, hi ha un important patrimoni arquitectònic que ens permet resseguir la història de l'indret, en destaca especialment l'imponent monestir de Sant Pere de Rodes. Within this area, as well as areas of great natural, there is a significant architectural heritage that allows us to trace the history of the place, in particularly stands the imposing monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. El municipi compta amb una oferta hotelera renovada, apartaments i càmpings. The town has a range of hotel renovated apartments and campsites. També disposa d'una bona xarxa comercial de proximitat i una variada oferta gastronòmica. It also has a good network of local shopping and a varied cuisine. Amb un miler d'habitants el Port de la Selva continua sent un poble tranquil, mantenint l'estructura tradicional dels ports pesquers malgrat arribar a multiplicar per 10 la seva població durant els mesos d'estiu. With a thousand inhabitants in Port de la Selva is still a quiet town, keeping the structure of the traditional fishing port despite reaching its population multiplied by 10 during the summer months.

The Exile Memorial Museum (MUME) is a place for memory, history and critical reflection. It is an interpretation centre which recalls the exiles brought about by the Civil War in Spain and Catalonia. Located at the same border crossing where most of the exiles fled, MUME combines museum functions, through permanent and temporary exhibitions, with those of historical research and education. Always through a broad perspective that links the past with the present, because the conflicts that cause exiles have been a constant in the history of the 20th century and continue to be so today.

WINE TOURISM (EMPORDÀ Designation of Origin)

There is no doubt that the wine culture and the knowledge of the wine trade reached Catalonia around the 6th century BC. The area was then the most important Greek colony in Spain, and Emporiae was the Greek city that later gave its name to the district of Empordà. Four centuries later, archaeological and documental evidence exists to demonstrate that the wines of the lands of Emporiae and other areas of the Tarraconensis were known in the domestic markets of other provinces of the Roman Empire and in the metropolis itself.

The wines

El Empordà has a great variety of wines. The red wines are high quality, full-bodied, well-structured and harmonious, sometimes with added hues thanks to careful aging. These reserva and crianza wines boast special aromatic notes. They are complex, with a subtle fragrance and a hint of spice, always preserving the aromas of the fruit and the vine. On the palate, they are full, flavoursome and pleasant.

Fresh and flavoursome white wines are elaborated with autochthonous varieties and other high quality single varieties. Rosé wines are also produced with a well-defined cherry colour, great personality, a delicate aroma, fresh with a moderate alcohol content.

Page 95: ITINERANNIA

www.empordaturisme.com 26

A speciality of the area is the Garnatxa de l´Emporda, a naturally sweet wine produced from the Garnacha grape. Full-bodied, with the flavour of the grape itself, mature, warm and smooth — virtues giving it the features of an exceptional dessert wine, together with the area's own sweet wine, the Moscatell de l’Empordà.

The organic wines, the Mistelles, the wines produced from over-ripe grapes and the sparkling wines complete the range of wines elaborated in Empordà.

The wineries and the guided tours. The designation of Origin Emporcá, has more than 40 wineries. At this moment the most part of the wineries offers the visitors guided tours. It is necessary to book in advance. In addition, the visitors can also directly buy wine bottles in these wineries. COSTA BRAVA week-end

GREEK AND ROMAN NATURE 3 days, 2 nights Easy ITINERÀNNIA is a network of hiking trails that stretches over 2500 kilometres.

The Alt Empordà is the northeastern most comarca (district) of mainland Spain in the province of Girona, Catalunya. It is a land of contrasts. The biggest one is in its landscapes, because in the Alt Empordà the wild Pyrenees meet the calm waters of the Mediterranean. But also there is the contrast between the mass tourism of the Costa Brava and the quiet trails and rural inns of Itinerannia.

The Alt Empordà is dominated by the Bay of Roses, home to the famous seaside resorts of Roses in the north and L´Escala in the south and the long stretch of campsites in Sant Pere pescador. Here we also find some of the oldest proves of civilisation in Spain at the Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries (Emporion). In the bay, just a step behind the miles of wide beaches we find the Aiguamolls d´Empordà (swamplands of the Empordà) nature park, famous for its abundance in birdlife and home to the last stretch of wild beach along the Costa Brava.
