GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC SCHOOL ITBS TESTING In Christ’s Love, Jayme Hartmann Past Newscast: March 5, 2017 February 10, 2017 February 19, 2017 February 26, 2017 Each year our students in grades 2-8 participate in a series of standardized achievement tests. Beginning Monday, March 6 th and going through Friday, March 17 th the children will be participating in the IOWA Assessments. The purpose for participating in these tests is three-fold. The results of the testing assists the teachers and administration in evaluating the curriculum, as well as how well the students are learning and applying the knowledge compared to children throughout the area, district and nation. From this statistical infor- mation, we can review and strengthen our curriculum to meet the needs of our students. The second reason for taking the tests is to provide information about individual students. The results from these tests can provide teachers, administration and parents with a guide for measuring the achieve- ment possibilities for child(ren) with their potential. We realize the tests are only a single indication and that many variables factor into a child’s performance, yet the tests can provide valuable information that is used in conjunction with other factors. Finally, many high schools use test data when making decisions regarding acceptance as well as place- ment into advanced classes. Most subject placement decisions require teacher recommendations, past grades and a copy of the child’s performance on standardized tests. Our testing schedule is included in this newscast (see page 3). The tests are given ONE class period a day, each morning. This ensures that students are alert and awake, and are not bogged down by extensive testing. The rest of the school day will proceed as normal and HW may be given in some classes. Of course teachers will be cognizant of the testing, but we need to continue teaching and assessing during this testing schedule. We ask that parents require their children to get a good night’s sleep during the testing weeks, as well as eat breakfast every day. A good night’s sleep provides the children with a fresh beginning and helps them sustain their energy throughout the day. Note that Sunday, March 12 th is the beginning of Daylight Sav- ings Time which may impact our students, so they may need to go to bed earlier than usual. Also, eating breakfast ensures the children nutrients and carbohydrates that provide energy for thinking and paying attention to the task. Thank you for all of your continued support while Good Shepherd strives to provide the best educational environment for your children. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me.

Congratulations to the 5th Grade Flag Football team for another undefeated season! The team extended their winning streak to 17 games, winning all their games this season by an average score of 37-11. It is a bittersweet moment for these boys as their participation in CYS grade school sports comes to an end. Many of these boys have shared many years of winning in multiple sports together. May they have lasting memories that they will

forever cherish

I wanted to share with you an opportunity for your students and/or the students in your community to earn scholarship money. Holland & Knight, which serves the Central Florida community, is sponsoring the "2017 Facing History Together Student Essay Contest: Making Choices in Today's World" for students ages 13 or older. The contest encourages students to reflect upon the Holocaust as they examine the role of moral courage in to-day's society.

The firm is sponsoring the contest in conjunction with Facing History and Ourselves, a nonprofit organiza-tion that educates students to think about the world in new ways, igniting conversations about how we can build societies free from racism, antisemitism, bullying and hatred of all kinds.

With the generous support of Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation's Holocaust Remembrance Project, the contest will offer more than $25,000 in scholarships and awards to students and their educators.

"With our decades of commitment, we are excited to embark on a new partnership that will help educate students about the Holocaust and the effect it has had on our society and our world. Sponsoring this essay contest for students will help to inspire a new generation filled with compassion, tolerance and the courage to stand up for what's right," said Ralph Lepore, Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation chairman.

Submissions for the contest will be accepted from March 1 to March 15. For the full contest rules, click here.

We encourage you to share this worthwhile opportunity with your school administrators, students and communities.

Sincerely, Edward Lawson
