The easier way tofixMDOT

Give Rep Trey Lamar R-Senatobia points for being honest

Lamar presented a bill on the House floor last week that is basically a counter-offer to the Senates idea to raise monty for highway improveshyments In doing so he acknowledged that the House proposal was impershyfect but he added that it was the best his peers could do without a straigiltshyup tax increase

A user fee increase with the gas tax would be the far easier way to fix MDOT but there just arent the votes there to do that he added

Lamar is obviously correct Othershywise the Legislature would have tackshyled this problem a couple of years ago when the Mississippi Economic Counshycil got behind a proposal for a sizable fuel tax increase But Lamar is one of the few Republicans willing to say so

GOP lawmakers would rather conshycede that highway funding is problemshyatic or say that lawmakers are looking for solutions Some will say they quesshytion the Mississippi Department of Transportations figures although no one has made a compelling financial presentation to show that MDOT is overstating the issue But few will say plainly that a higher gasoline tax is the Simplest way to raise the extra highshyway money

The House bill is different from the Senates in that it does not divert fushyture highway revenue - up to $800 million - to the control of the govershynor ajob Lt Gov Thte Reeves the president of the Senate hopes to have in 2020

But the big flaw in both versions is that the amount of extra money for highways would be greatly dependent on the states economy and the tax revenues it generates If the economy remains flat as it has for the past three years then highways get less This will not fix the states mainteshynance needs

Outside Opinion IJ-f-

Wallace also discussed repairs

taking place at an old sewer lagoon in Poplarville He said the work included the removal of fallen trees and installation of a six-inch drainage pipe to allow the water to reach the nearby creek Since this solution is temporary Wallace said there are three options either do nothing build a permanent drain that will allow the water to reach the creek or pump the water to the cascade and let the level of the lagoon go down Wallace said the problem with pumping the water would require the purchase or rental of a bypass pump plus the diesel to run the pumpAdditionally that option would involve hoses to be lain across the road After some discussion the Board approved a motion for Wallace to bring aproposal for a permanent fix during the next meeting and notify the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality about the Boards future plans
