BACKGROUND

Over 14 years ago, the Small Dog Design studio created its first logo for a statewide event held in Ballarat. Small Dog soon became incredibly busy offering local and metro businesses a range of graphic design solutions – from concept through to final print.

Small Dog continued to grow, securing two national tourism publications and employing its first staff member within 6 weeks of opening. Within a year, Small Dog moved out of home to a new ‘kennel’, and very appropriately into an old butcher shop! In its custom renovated, commercial premises Small Dog Design continued to offer quality design and friendly service with a growing team and client list.

Small Dog Design’s market now consists of a cross section of clients ranging from local tradespeople, home businesses and small companies to tourism, healthcare, retail, hospitality, council, government and corporate giants. Small Dog Design offers a range of services as broad and individual as its clients - corporate logos, branding and stationery, presentation folders, brochures, web sites, magazines, booklets, annual reports, menus, signage, packaging and labels, point of sale and displays, posters, illustration, publications, catalogues, calendars, iphone & ipad apps and television ads.

THE PACK

The team of creative individuals is the integral link in the Small Dog Design chain. A successful design studio must have creative and professional designers and developers at its helm in order to bring to life a clients requirements. Small Dog Design is proud of its team as they are able to do just that.

Designers and developers at the Kennel have University training with individuals holding graphic design and IT / web development qualifications. Our team have not only the qualifications and creativity, but the outlook and maturity to provide Small Dog’s service philosophy. In addition, and as a manifestation of the Small Dog vision, personnel (directors and employees alike) share the desire to make design and web accessible and approachable through positive client relationships.

Small Dog Design believes that commitment comes from recognition and reward, but that the best rewards are those that are intrinsic to the work. Challenging and varied projects help keep staff interested and stimulate creativity. With a wide variety of clients and over 100 different projects “on the go” on any given day, designers at Small Dog find every day different and rewarding. A sense of satisfaction is always present when projects are completed and the finished product presented.

Small Dog Design believes that the team will naturally contribute to the achievements of a business’ goals and objectives if they are challenged, recognised and happy. INNOVATION & ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SERVICES

Small Dog Design is constantly looking at ways of increasing our environmental management practices. Over the last 5 years we have reduced waste by over 30%.

Working closely with both our clients and suppliers we look to make every project as sustainable as possible, from initial concepts through to delivery of goods.

At Small Dog we are committed to offering a range of sustainable and economical design and management solutions that help reduce the impact of our industry on the environment.

We operate with a fleet of three small company vehicles that were purchased based on their economic and environmental features and utilise supplies that minimise their environmental impact as much as possible through sustainable recycling practices, waste management procedures and innovative printing processes.

Our standard practice is to use vegetable based inks and dyes in any print production process and continue to recommend this choice to our clients.

We also provide our clients with a range of paper stock options that include (but not limited to):

Small Dog Design are committed to making a significant contribution to our local community and we often support / sponsor events or projects that will result in positive outcomes for local businesses and/or the residents of Ballarat.

In recent years, our community engagement projects have included:

• Act of Kindness Award – recognition of kind gestures and generous behaviour displayed by children at school or in their community

• BAROC Frock & Tux Ball – raising funds for the Ballarat Austin Radiation Oncology Centre (BAROC) cancer treatment centre in Ballarat

• Support 4 Cancer (S4C) – Assisting Colleen Thompson with design, advertising and website - providing support for survivors of all forms of cancer.

• United Way (Annual Golf Classic) – raising valuable funds for community development projects in Ballarat

• United Way / Marshmans Personal (Administrative Professionals Breakfast) – acknowledging the valuable contribution of Administrative staff while raising funds for community development projects in Ballarat

• Ballarat Red Devils – Local Ballarat soccer club encouraging friendly team sports in a competitive regional league

• The BUS - providing recreational opportunities for youth, from a variety of backgrounds in an environment that builds positive relationships between local police, youth, the community and its people.

We are also very proud to support the educational sector of our community and have been collaborating with staff and students from the University of Ballarat – TAFE division since 2004. We support and encourage the practical placement of students studying the Advanced Diploma of Arts (Graphic Design) in our studio throughout the year, provide incentive prizes for the ‘Designer of the Year’ award and assist in the critique of folios submitted by final year students.

The supervised work placement program equates to over 960 student contact hours annually and is a mutually beneficial experience for both the visiting students and the Small Dog team. It is always refreshing for the design dogs at the kennel to engage with ‘new’ design concepts or attitudes and the variety of individual styles and opinions of the visiting students are a welcome addition to the dynamic atmosphere of our studio.

GRAPHIC DESIGN & PRODUCTION SERVICES

Our team utilise the latest release of industry standard hardware and software packages.

Our suite of seven Apple Macintosh computers, and two PC’s run a range of software from Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia, Adobe Indesign, Adobe Acrobat to Final Cut Pro and Motion, ensuring we provide our clients with a complete range of professional standard design and development services.

Our FTP (file transfer protocol) server appropriately named ‘Cyberdog” makes sharing large files of project data between designers, suppliers and clients easy and efficient. For example, a 200MB project can be transferred to a Pre-press house via uploading the file to our FTP server instead of sending it by road courier or post (a time consuming process) – files can arrive and be accessed within minutes!

Puppy Content Management System (CMS)

Puppy CMS is Small Dog’s custom Content Management System. Designed from the ground up by our team of developers, Puppy is extremely simple to use yet powerful.

Allowing our clients to manage all aspects of the content of their websites, Puppy makes updating text, changing images or adding news items a walk in the park.

The system has been designed to be expandable beyond the initial features which allows complete custom module development per site.
