PYC Students Demand Real-World Relevance, Achieve Real-World Resultsby Cynthia Gomez, JAG/YES Coordinator
Our PYC students are demanding real-world relevance in their studies. In turn, we are committed to ensuring they graduate into life-enhancing opportunities, whether that means college, career training, an on-the-job internship or apprenticeship.
For example, in our JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) class, students explore and expand their skills and interests as they gain exposure to post-diploma possibilities. They’ve attended career and social justice conferences. This winter, we convened a very successful Healthcare Careers Forum (see Snapshots), and our Building Trades Forum featured People of Color Union Members (POCUMS) who shared their career journeys with students. Many more plans are in the works for next year.
Since the Capri officially went dark on May 13, we’ve been busy! Clearing a building with this much history is quite a task, from removing theatrical lighting and preparing it for reuse, to finding new homes for much-used appliances and a few old upright pianos. We’ve also been busy removing the well-worn auditorium seats in preparation for the comfy new seats picked by you, the Capri’s loyal friends.
Other advance work has been completed on the exterior as well, and within the next few weeks heavy machinery and construction fencing will appear and the construction team will take over. We’re looking forward to providing updates on our website. Even as we march forward on construction, we’re still taking donations to close the small gap between
what we’ve raised and what we need to bring this building to fruition. If you haven’t already donated, please consider making a donation to the Capri capital campaign today, either online at our website, by check mailed to Capri Capital Campaign, 2210 Oliver Ave. N., Minneapolis, MN 55411 or by calling Debra deNoyelles at 612-643-2042. Every dollar counts as we move forward with this magnificent project that will have such a tremendous impact in North Minneapolis!

What’s Up, OST?!by Catrice O’Neal, Director of Out-of-School-Time Programs
OST staff, scholars and families are looking forward to a summer filled with fun in the sun during Summer Friends, our 7-week summer enrichment program, July 1-August 16.
Each summer we partner with programs to offer new learning experiences to our scholars. This year we’re grateful to continue gardening with the
Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, wiffle ball with Playworks, bicycling with the Minneapolis Police Department’s Bike Cops for Kids, and financial literacy with Junior Achievement.
We‘re also excited to announce several new partnerships. Inner City Tennis will be leading a week-long tennis camp at North Commons.

Real-World Relevance continued from page 1
The most exciting part of this work is that we’ve just begun to scratch the surface of what’s available to our students. They are exercising their imagining/dreaming muscles, envisioning lives of purpose, generating wealth, and experiencing real-world results this summer.

PCYC Hosts Learners to Leaders in Education Program by Alison Bey, Learners to Leaders in Education Coordinator
I joined PCYC this spring as the coordinator for a new program, Learners to Leaders in Education (LLE), which is funded by a grant from the McKnight Foundation and is a collaborative effort of the Metropolitan Federation of Alternative Schools. My work here will be informed by my experience in a variety of educational fields, from digital literacy, to ESL, to basic education for high school students and adults.
In the LLE program I’ll be working with all of the Contract Alternative Program (CAP) high schools in the Twin Cities, recruiting CAP
students who are interested in teaching careers, and helping them explore the many different pathways to careers in education. I’m planning a summer school session that will be a hybrid classroom/online course with weekly field trips to educational sites, modeled after a typical Intro to Education course that students may take in college.
I’m also working hard to form partnerships and build awareness of the program throughout the Twin Cities, and welcome new connections and ideas. Contact me at [email protected] or 612-607-4402 (call or text). Thank you!

But the mission has not changed, and I’ve always believed in it.”
Tarleton has three main goals for the next year. “One, to continue the transition to a project-based learning environment.” In this model, teachers and staff guide students along individual learning pathways, help them make authentic connections to their community and ensure that they meet the educational standards of the state.
His second goal is to take Spark Wednesdays to the next level. Students will be given more responsibility for building this program that’s designed to spark their interests and help them earn credits in new ways.
Minneapolis Parks and Recreation will host us at Theodore Wirth Park for a week-long safety camp that includes water safety, fishing, first aid, and more, and the Science Museum of Minnesota’s Kitty Anderson Youth Science Center (KAYSC) will be leading STEM justice workshops featuring science and social justice learning.
Our OST summer program looks forward to bringing these new and returning partners to enhance summer learning and help us meet our forever goal to eliminate summer slide! We invite you to stop by between 1 and 4pm Monday-Thursday, July 1-August 16, to see our scholars and partners in action. Happy Summer!

Third, “As always, I want to make sure that the needs of our teachers and staff are met so they’re able to do their job at the highest level.”
Tarleton mentioned one other longer-term goal. He’d like to create an extensive database of adults who are vested in PCYC and our young people and would be willing to share their knowledge and connections with our students. “As we continue to develop the project-based line of programming within our school, we may be interested in knocking on your door!” To be among the first on the list, or to connect with David Tarleton: [email protected], 612-643-2097.
