• My focus is on the future, making sure that King’s is not wrong footed by the

developments in technology. It is also about ensuring that King’s is getting

as much value from the licenses particularly those like office 365 which are

also rapidly changing.

• As far as King’s Vision for 2029 is concerned technology is essential and is

fundamental to the way the world is changing. We in education and

research are reliant on it and will be affected by changes in it. What I do is

show how technology can give us an advantage, and influence people to

make this happen.

• Knowing what the potential futures are allows us to shape the strategic IT

direction for technology adoption. We can influence ways of thinking and

help the university to see the direction that technology will take its core

services.

James Toner- Head of Digital Education

The Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning (CTEL) creates and delivers King’s vision for digital education. We are the hub in the university where technology enhanced learning (TEL) and interested groups, such as, King’s Learning Institute (KLI), King’s Online, along with other specialist groups from across Kings come together to decide and advise on best practice, initiatives and projects, with an institutional focus, ensuring a consistent experience for staff and students.

Our remit runs across the university and we spearhead the delivery of education technology projects, acting on behalf of faculties, engaging with IT to deliver realisable benefits/outcomes.

We provide specialist consultancy and advice service to faculties as well as working in partnership with Kings Academy to offer a suite of staff Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

We are responsible for keeping King’s Infrastructure (Networks, Security, Telephony, Cabling and Technology

Spaces) running. We maintain the IT infrastructure to agreed SLAs, performance and security criteria. My team

looks after more than 4,500 network devices, 450 individual rooms and datacentres over the 5 campuses, as well the

shared data centre in Slough and the Service Centre in Cornwall. We also provides proactive systems management

and monitoring, through Network Operations Centre based in Cornwall and the 3rd party provided Security

Operations Centre. We strive to provide a consistent, professional and secure service to all of the teams customers.

We look after the basic building blocks of technology; the room to site IT equipment, the wires connecting buildings,

network hardware, sockets in the wall and the telephone on the desk, as well as providing secure ingress and egress

points from the university IT environment.

We support the transition of new solutions into the university and respond to demand for high quality IT, information

Working alongside Application Services we look at individual service areas, process and systems that could benefit

from improvement, taking an evolutionary approach to Applications at King’s. We work closely with our customers

throughout the university to understand their needs and priorities in relation to these crucial Applications.

We are responsible for the critical applications that run across the whole university, such as timetabling, the admissions portal, SITS, payroll and many more. We make sure those applications are available and are performing to the specification we have defined. We continuously look for ways to improve the service of these applications and support behind the scenes.

King’s Strategic Vision has systems as a key enabler, application services will provide the stability, efficiency and transparency to enable students to enrich their learning experience, staff to gain knowledge on performance and data to assist them in their teaching and the University to make key decisions regarding research and teaching.

We work as an integral part of IT Services Team, making connections between the Applications Team, the rest of IT and our customers to ensure our Applications continue to meet evolving needs; developing our strategic approach to service and enhancing our Service Catalogue. We work collaboratively across the whole of IT and especially rely on support from colleagues in platforms and infrastructure in ensuring that those crucial applications work as we need them to.

Service assurance: risk, continuity, security, compliance

Chrissie Hall

We ensure that we in King’s IT play our part in delivering the vision. For us, this means

helping things go right rather than stopping them from going wrong.

Risk management – our aim is to build excellence in risk management within King’s IT and in support of the wider King’s community.

Information security – ensuring that the information kept in King’s infrastructure is safe and secure, that access is controlled, that the right people have access to the right level of information at the right time.

Service continuity – a framework of policies, standards, procedures and tools through which King's is able to improve its ability to respond when major system failures occur, its resilience to major incidents, ensuring that critical systems and services do not fail or that failures are recovered within acceptable process RTO/RPO limits.

Policies – it is important for employees to know what is expected and required of them when using the technology we provide, and it is critical for King's to protect itself by having policies to govern areas such as internet and email usage, access, security, software and hardware inventory and data retention.

We support the compliance and smooth running of King's IT. Working with stakeholders within IT and across the university, providing support around information security and encouraging best practice with a focus on four key areas:

Supplier Management

Dave Pople

TechnologyNimble and Agile

For King’s to achieve its vision we need visibility and co-operation with all teams,

business units and projects throughout the IT infrastructure Kings needs to create

strategic alliances and relationships with its major suppliers. It is through these

relationships that we will see cost savings, reduce risk and drive innovation.

We ensure that in IT we have a deep appreciation of the suppliers we work with, the relationships we need to develop and how to ensure that every supplier supports our strategy, our ways of working and our ethos. We are developing a way of actively managing our supplier relationships as we introduce new suppliers, develop ongoing relationships and, as needed, conclude some supplier relationships too. At all times we ensure that we meet the requirements of the contracts we have agreed, mitigate risk to Kings and ensure we have a robust support model in place.

We help King’s get best value and performance from our IT suppliers, working

closely with supplier stakeholders across the university, including Procurement,

Finance, IT Services and IT Solutions.
