Director's Message Sixty plus cars filled the parking lot at the Railroad Museum in Boone on July 15. Unfortunately, Buicks from the Hawkeye Chapter were noticeably absent. Our club was represented by Dorothy Crooks' 1940 Special Phaeton, John Hemmingway's 1954 Roadmaster two door hardtop, Harold Werley's 1986 LeSabre funeral coach, and Bill Barquist without Buick. Two other Buicks were present, a 1969 Electra 225 convertible from Boone county and a 1954 Special four door sedan from Des Moines. Rare and interesting vehicles present included a 1930s DeSoto Airflow sedan, a Detroit Electric with twin controls enabling it to be drive in either direction while facing forward, and a restored WWII era Dodge Power Wagon modified for modern driving with four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, and leather bucket seats, but still powered by the original flathead six cylinder engine. At our next Chapter event we will enjoy the hospitality of Gene and Betty Upstill on Saturday, August 25 as they host a pot luck gathering at their farm north of Gilbert. As in the past they have invited members of the Cadillac, Studebaker, and Oldsmobile clubs to attend. Plan to arrive between 10am and noon, the meal will begin at noon. Please bring a dish to share and lawn chairs for yourself (Upstills will provide meat, drinks, and table service.) RSVP to Gene that you will attend. Two Chapter events await us in September. The first is the 2012 Heartland Regional Meet in St. Louis on September 6, 7, and 8. A change of location was necessitated when the Holiday Inn informed the Gateway Chapter that their facility would not be ready in time to be the host location. A new host hotel was found at the Hilton-St. Louis Airport. They have assured us that prior reservations at the Holiday Inn are being honored by the Hilton. I would like to know who from our chapter is attending the Regional Meet so we can present a unified presence. Please let me know. The second is the All Buick Show at Stillwater Buick in Stillwater, Minnesota on September 15. A registration form is included below. This is a nice all day show sponsored by the Fireball Chapter. Congratulations to Rick Young who was elected President of the BCA at the 2012 National in Concord, North Carolina for the second time. Rick makes the Hawkeye Chapter proud as he takes leadership for the coming year. Let's keep those Buicks rolling, Harold

Allen Swift received this Rolls Royce for graduation in 1928 and drove it until he was 102. At the time of his death the car had 170,000 miles on the odometer. Allen really drove the wheels off it. 2000 miles a year for 82 years.

Report on the 2012 Buick Club of America National Meeting recently Held in Concord, North Carolina, 27th to 30th June 2012.

Story and photos by John McCarthy Being new to owning Buick cars and living in a state, (South Dakota), which does not have many older Buicks, (vintage, classic and restored), my wife and I decided to combine our summer holiday trip to visit my son Cameron in Augusta Georgia, where he is studying for a PhD at the Georgia Medical College, with a stop off at the annual Buick Club of America’s national meeting. The meeting was being held in Concord near Charlotte, North Carolina. Concord is the home of NASCAR and is also the home to the magnificent Lowes Motor Speedway. It took three days to drive from Sioux Falls to Charlotte and we stopped off along the way to see the Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Tennessee and a small village called Leiper’s Fork which is close by. Both of these attractions were interesting and well worth the stop off. While I appreciate the many excellent examples of restored and un-restored Buicks which are regularly paraded by my fellow Hawkeye members, I wanted to see what the national standards were like and see some of the best Buicks in the country and to get an idea of how far one needs to go when restoring a Buick, to be considered one of the best on show. This I did get to see and along the way I had a rapid education about the history of Buick, the various models, their identification numbers and names. All of which were very impressive and quite an eye opener, as to the lengths people would go to when restoring their “pride and joys”. I learned new phrases, such as; over restored, trailer queens and the meaning of what a daily driver is, gold new senior and un-restored archival car meant. The national meet was extremely well organized by the Carolina chapter and every day, leading up to Saturday, when the cars would be judged, we were able to go on organized tours of visit local sites. These trips included a visit to Steele Rubber Products and many of you will be aware that this company plays an important role in providing new rubber gaskets for many older Buicks and can provide to you most rubber parts required to restore your Buick. I enjoyed this trip and seeing how they investigated, researched and developed products, before they manufactured them. This process often took several years to complete. The next day there was a trip to the NASCAR hall of fame in Charlotte and was certainly an eye opener and a highlight. My wife Jo, being a keen NASCAR fan, was overjoyed at being able to visit this shrine. The displays, many of which were interactive, can only be described as being fantastic and you were on many occasions put in the driver’s seat. To be able to walk on the different sections of angled/banked track, allowed you to experience just what 22 degrees of banking angle feels like and the forces which the car and driver must control to be able go forward at pace. The next day we visited the local Hendrick’s Motor Sports which is the home of four current and top NASCAR drivers and their support teams. Here we were able to see each workshop and the mechanics working on a variety of cars. I didn’t know that each of these four drivers had between 14 and 16 cars each, which they used during the racing season. Two cars were built for each race and they were tuned and adjusted to suit the particular race track where they were going to race on. Engines and transmissions were also built to suit a particular race. The workshop floor was so clean I am sure that you could eat your lunch off it. On Friday afternoon I attended the Judge’s training session conducted by Alan Oldfield and was hoping to become an apprentice judge and helper. The training session was interesting and

informative and I admired how Alan was able to manage the meeting with much debate and comment going on among those present. Many members present had their own ideas as to how the judging should be conducted and Alan was a true diplomat and an excellent man manager and was able to keep the meeting going forward and in the end everyone seemed to be happy. I was assigned to a team of mostly New York members, (having an Irish name and being a foreigner allowed me to fit in here). The team was assigned to judge cars built between 1953 and 1964. Judging was held at the Lowes Motor Speedway and there were 19 cars in this group. I was able to see some superb examples of restored Buicks and in particular there were two 1954 Roadmasters and a 1964 Skylark Convertible which stood out. My judging job was to grade the interiors, including the trunk and with some help from the team leader, I was happy to do this job and feel that I have learned a lot as to what a good and well presented restoration is. I will take my hat off to Alan and Joy Oldfield who work tirelessly during the Saturday judging day and they had much to contend with to ensure that everyone was able to present their cars and that the judging process was carried out fairly, equitably and complete. At the end of this day, when the temperature topped 108 degrees and the judging was over, Jo took a ride along with a Richard Petty NASCAR racing car and realized her dream of going around a NASCAR race track at 165 mph. The national meeting concluded on Saturday evening with a banquet and awards evening and this was a great evening where the winners were presented with their awards and trophies. The meeting was a true international event and there were people from several overseas destinations, including Australia and New Zealand. I was able to catch up with these people and it transpires that one couple from New Zealand, (Mike and Helena Hanning) are good friends with Bill and Marilyn Barquist. This shows what a true international car the Buick is and it brings people from all over the world together in friendship. Our trip did not stop there as we continued on to Augusta, Georgia and then, after five days with my son, we started back towards Sioux Falls via the east coast, Charleston and Myrtle Beach, SC and then up through the Outer Banks NC to Virginia. From there we traveled to Gettysburg, Pittsburg PA and then into Minnesota via Chicago and Milwaukee. Finally getting back to Sioux Falls, 4500 miles after starting out, three weeks before.

Buick Regional September 6,7,8, 2012, St. Louis UPDATE ( revised form next page ) When we signed the contract in January 2011 with our former host hotel, Holiday Inn, Earth City, St. Louis, much in advance of our Meet, they indicated that some of the rooms would be updated, There was no mention of a complete renovation until March 2012. We had a meeting scheduled with Holiday Inn for July 10, 2012 to finalize meeting room and show field requirements. We called the hotel manager on July 7 to verify our appointment, but our call was not returned. We called again on July 8th at which time we were told the hotel would not be open for business until October 2012. We were able to find only one suitable replacement facility at this late date, The Hilton, St. Louis Airport. They are meeting our $83.00 guest room rate with small adjustments, and our banquet meal is still $26. No additional costs, if any, are being passed on to those already registered or to new registrants. Reservations previously made at the Holiday Inn are being transferred by Hilton and given a new confirmation number. Please follow the reservation instructions located in the upper right corner on our new registration form. The Hilton is across from the St. Louis Lambert International Airport and just minutes from the Downtown area and the famous St. Louis Arch. The hotel is accessible from exit 236 of Highway I-70, a short distance east on Natural Bridge Road that parallels the highway. The historic St. Charles tour utilizing the hotel shuttle is now for Thursday only, but we’ll arrange transportation for the few who may want to tour there on Friday or Saturday. All other activities will, go as planned. We have worked hard in this last-minute effort to maintain our reputation for hosting great shows. We are excited that our new facility is much better than a renovated Holiday Inn. After all, it is a Hilton, a beautiful, and well-managed facility. We’ll do whatever we can to help you have fun and enjoy your visit.
