Women: The Real Masters of Social Media

New data shows U.S. women are leading the charge on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and the like.

Women make up 52% of the world’s population, but their influence on social media is much higher. At least, that’s according to new research of U.S. adults analyzed by Ruby Media Corp. for Chicago-based personal-finance website FinancesOnline.com.

In a recently released infographic (which you can see by scrolling down), researchers identified the many ways females are outpacing males in the use of such sites as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and their ilk (at least, in the U.S.). This is of note for the many, many companies struggling with how to best target their social-media efforts.

Not convinced? Let the numbers do the talking. Here are 5 reasons women rule social media:

1. More women than men use the most popular platformsIf you look at the user base of the six most popular social-media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram and LinkedIn), the female user base is larger than the male for all except LinkedIn, where men have a slight lead. The most notable disparity is among Pinterest users: 33% of U.S. adult women use this image-heavy sharing site, compared to only 8% of men.

2. Women are frequent visitorsAn even 30% of U.S. adult women visit social-media sites several times per day. Just 26% of men do the same.

3. Women use social media to interact with brandsWhen marketers embark on social media outreach efforts, they’re almost always doing so in the attempt to engage potential and current customers. And data shows women are much more receptive to their efforts; they’re more likely than men to show support for a brand, access special offers, stay up to date on news and comment on brand developments.4. Women rely on social media for news

A full 58% of U.S. women get news from Facebook; 52% get it from Google+. Compare that to the 42% and 48%, respectively, of men who do the same.

5. Women are leading the mobile transitionWhile mobile use of social networks is not yet the norm, it’s getting close—and women are leading the way. Some 46% of U.S. females access social media using their smartphone; 32% use a tablet. For men, those numbers are 43% and 20%, respectively.
