Issue No.10: May 2017
From the Principal
A warm welcome back to the start of Term 2. Students have slipped
back into routines well, enjoying some holiday improvements
including a resurfaced slide and new goalposts on the oval.
During the holidays, it was wonderful to see so many of our students
at the ANZAC Day Service. It was also heartening to see those
present embodying our School Value of respect—and this fortnight’s
focus ‘Manners Matter’—so appropriately.
We wish all the best for our grade 3 and 5 students who will be
sitting NAPLAN tests next week. As you know, this national program
helps monitor progress in our education system as well as giving
valuable information about student achievement. It should not,
however, be the cause of any stress or anxiety. The Department
advises that the best way you can assist your child is by helping them
to feel comfortable about the nature and purpose of the tests, and
assure them that the tests will give them an opportunity to show
what they have learned in class.
We also wish all our Grade 3–6 students well as, continuing on from last terms athletic
opportunities, they take part next Wednesday in our Cross Country event, which will be
run at the school. In a few weeks’ time, on the 31st of May, the whole school will be
involved in our Beach Fun Run (a date carefully calculated by Mr Woodberry to take
account of local tides!).
This week, we have also welcomed a pre-service teacher, Jasmin Davies, to the Acacia
classroom. As well as studying to become a teacher, Mrs Davies works as a Teacher Aide
at the Southern Support School. It is sure to be a rich learning experience and we
welcome her contribution at the school over the next four weeks.
Finally, Karen Amber is organising our Literacy Tutors program, which will begin soon,
and we are seeking volunteers who would like to help. The program matches volunteers
with students who would benefit from additional, 1-to-1 support. Activities and
directions will be provided, so no special skills are required. If you have even half an hour
a week to contribute, we would greatly appreciate your support. Please contact the
school to register your interest.

South Arm Skate Park and Crime Stoppers
We had this photo taken by Crime Stoppers. Sam Barwick made a speech with his friends about skateboarding in the community. The Crime Stoppers Manager talked about shop lifting increasing by 125%. We watched a TV ad that will be on TV soon. There was a picture of our Skate Park to have a look at. There was a lot of food, the food was very nice. by Archer and Charlie

Visit to Bayview Secondary College
On the 6th of April, Grade 3 -6 went to Bayview Secondary College (Rokeby) for Youth Week / Science Fair activities.
There was a multisport stadium, a soccer field and Sumo wrestling outside and virtual reality, piano key making and a black inflatable
dome inside. It was really fun.

Anzac Day and the Joey Scouts
We first went to the RSL and then walked down to meet the other
people at the Café. We marched to the Cenotaph and stayed for
the presentation and wreath laying. We went to the RSL for a sausage when it was over and there were lots of people there.

Anzac Day Report
On the 25th of April, there was an Anzac Day Service held at the South Arm Cenotaph. The School Captains
represented the school and laid a wreath. It was surprising and pleasing to see how many students turned up, especially because it was during the
holidays. by Oscar and Sophie
