Life Education Van Visit -The Life Education van has been parked at Allora State School this week. Facilitator Paul Baker, using Life Educations mascot, Harold the giraffe, has been on hand for the benefit of primary students from both our schools. Life Education is a registered charity, started by Rev. Ted Noffs in the 1970’s and the largest non-government provider of drug and health education to primary age school children in Queensland. Around 130,000 children pass through the doors of the 19 Life Education vans, which visit more than 500 QLD primary schools.This year Life Education held an open session for parents and other interested people to attend on Monday afternoon, so they could look around the van and see first hand the work the

To celebrate the refurbishment of the children’s section at the Allora Library, the Southern Downs Regional Libraries will be hosting the first ever Storytime on Monday May 24. The 2pm session will be followed by afternoon tea.

What is Pestivirus?Pestivirus (also known as Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus - BVDV)) is an infection of cattle that causes significant disease in both beef and dairy herds. While it is called a ‘diarrhoea’ virus, this disease can cause a number of clinical syndromes including;• Respiratory disease• Reproductive failure• Reduced growth rates• Diarrhoea and wasting Recent testing in Australian herds have shown that as many as 90% of herds have had exposure to this disease.

How is it transmitted?Persistently infected (PI) animals are the principal way BVDV is spread and maintained within a herd. When the foetus is infected between about 30–125 days of gestation and survives the infection to term, the calf will be infected with the virus for life (‘persistently infected’ or PI) and does not produce antibodies to the virus. Persistently infected (PI) animals excrete large amounts of virus in body fluids and discharges (nasal and oral secretions e.g. saliva, aerosols, tears, milk, semen, urine and faeces) throughout their life, and are the main reservoir of BVDV in a herdFor spread to occur, a susceptible animal can be infected from direct contact with a PI animal or from contact with infected discharges. The presence and movements of PI animals in a herd are the keys to the spread of BVDV. Infection rates in a herd will depend on the number of PI animals present, the level of herd immunity and the degree of contact between animals. Management practices that result in close contact (e.g. mustering, yarding or trucking) can increase spread within a mob.The solution is to test for the PI animal and remove it from your herd thus reduceing the chances to diseases occurring in healthy cattle.To learn more about the disease or to discuss ways to investigate Pestivirus in your herd, please contact the vets at either the Warwick and Allora Vet Clinics for more information.

Letter to the Editor…To The Editor,On the day of our downfall in town, my mother kath McConachy, while shopping in the main street, had a fall. This was due to the slippery conditions that my mother fell while going to the car. My mother had just left the chemist shop and fell in the gutter. She is an older lady and although the fall was to the ground, she did not sustain any injuries.My mother was assisted by a many number of people. I would like to thank those who helped her in her time of need. There are a few on the scene that need a mention - Andrew Petersen and John Constable were first on the scene but there were a good few who also helped and were concerned. SHOW SOCIETIES REUNIONBecause of the large number of people Involved in what is regarded as one of the largest voluntary organisations in the nation, early indications suggest that the Reunion of Past and Present Show Officials, Stewards, Showgirls, Queens of the Downs, and Spouses or Partners, and other persons who are or who have been involved in the running of the Show, will be a great success.The Reunion organised by the Darling Downs Sub-Chamber of Agricultural Societies will take place on Saturday 3rd July in the Glenvale Room at the Toowoomba Showgrounds. Registration fee of $40 includes a two course luncheon. Several of the past Showgirls and Queens of the Downs will be attending.We are relying on Show Society people to contact past Committee members. Stewards, Showgirls, Queens of the

Combined Churches of Allora (Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian and Uniting).A warm welcome is extended to everyone to attend the annual service to mark the closure of the week of Prayer for Christian Unity, at 7.00pm on Sunday next, 24th May. The host for 2010 is St. David's Anglican Church. This year's programme has been prepared for this world-wide celebration by the Christian churches of Scotland, who were the pioneers of the ecumenical movement. The programme provides for Christians from all faith traditions to come together to pray, while still respecting their diversity. Supper and fellowship will follow the service and an offering will be taken up for the Chaplaincy service at our local State School. Please do come. ABC Radio National wants to find Australia’s best regional museums ABC Radio National is once again inviting Australia’s regional museums to step forward and tell us all why they should be recognised as the finest in the land. Now in its third year, the Regional Museums Award will focus on museums in their roles as local story-tellers and local ambassadors (encouraging tourism and regional development) and on how they look towards survival in the future. This year there will be three categories: • Best volunteer-run museum • Best small museum (with a total budget of $150,000 or less) • Best Indigenous Cultural Centre/Keeping Place Nominations opened on 18 May 2010 to coincide with International Museum Day. Overall winners of past Regional Museums Awards, The Kodja Place (Kojonup, WA, 2008) and North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum (North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, 2009), have reported an increased and sustained level of interest in their organisations since the announcement of their respective wins. They have received visits from other regional museum representatives, keen to understand more about these exceptional organisations. The Regional Museums Award website at abc.net.au/rn/museums has all eligibility and nomination information, together with a Guest Book for everyone to record their favourite museum memories. Nominations must be received by Friday 23 July 2010. Judges will shortlist museums as finalists for all categories of the Regional Museums Award and select one organisation as the overall winner. ABC Radio National’s Bush Telegraph will travel to the winning organisation’s museum to record a program at the venue for national broadcast. Winners will be announced during ABC Radio National Breakfast in late-August. The Regional Museums Award was developed following discussions with Museums Australia who identified organisations in regional and rural areas as a sector of the museums community that would benefit from greater exposure in terms of their collections and the important part they play in local communities. ABC Radio National acknowledges the invaluable assistance of Museums Australia in the development and judging of the Regional Museums Award.

Wattles Win “Super Club” Trophy, but “Boars” Snare Top Grade Points.Quicksilver fullback Stephen Edwards scored three tries as the Goondiwindi “Boars” outscored the “Queensland Farmer’s Warehouse” Wattles “Warriors” 38 – 28 in the Toowoomba Rugby League Round 5 matches at Platz Oval on Saturday evening.The day had been a giant rugby league spectacle, with both the Wattles Junior Rugby League Club and the Wattles senior club combining to host Goondiwindi’s junior and senior clubs in a program that kicked off at 9 am Saturday morning. The “Wattle’s Super Club Day” trophy was on offer to the club that won most matches from Under 11 grade to “A” Grade with the result being a four all draw. After what was a tremendous promotion of the game of rugby league, Wattles Club’s were presented with the “Super Club Day” trophy after posting wins in Under 11, 12, 14 and Under 18 age grades. The “A” Grade loss was disappointing for Wattles, who are still idling along with one win over the Oakey “Bears” and three losses from the opening five rounds of fixtures, one round being a bye.Goondiwindi got off to a horror start to the 2010 season losing their initial three matches before clouting Pittsworth last week in a marked form reversal 46 – 16. Their veteran centre Craig McKenzie touched down for two tries against Pittsworth, and McKenzie repeated the dose in a player of the match performance on Saturday evening against Wattles.

The “Boars” scored twice in the opening twelve minutes of the game to lead 12 – 0 before exciting Wattles five eighth Tim Hentschel cashed in after 26 minutes to have the “Warriors” trailing 6 – 12. In a major loss Hentschel was concussed later in the game having to leave the field. Minutes after the second half restart with Goondiwindi leading 18 – 6, forward John Blaine scored dragging two defenders over the line with him in a determined effort. Wattles appeared to be finding their feet in the time slot immediately after the break, and when halfback Xavier Manley eased between defenders from ten metres out in the 48th minute, Wattles were well back in the game trailing by 16 – 18.The “Boars” didn’t take Wattles resurgence lying down though and returned fire with two tries. From the restart of that second four pointer Wattles tried a short kick-off tactic that saw electric fullback Brenden Wilson dragged down two metres from the try line. Quick thinking second rower Brady Glass took the pass to charge over for a great try, that had Wattles 22 – 26 behind. The “Boars” posted two further tries in the final ten minutes of play, while Brenden Wilson scored to add to his growing season total after gathering a well placed Brady Glass grubber.Glass was among Wattles best with a solid alround performance, along with rampaging no frills front-rower Jim Hegarty. Front-rower Jason Nightingale was again prominent as he has been so consistently over the season’s opening weeks. Wattles finished the game short staffed with only one player on the bench for the final 20 minutes, Tim Hentschel, hooker Harry Gibson and fullback Brenden Wilson all lost with concussion in what was a tough & vigorous encounter. Gibson is out for some time it has been revealed with a fractured thumb. A big night for young back-rower B.J. Perks who made his “A” Grade debut off the bench for Wattles. Back-rower Hamish Moore was a strong performer for Wattles along with hooker Luke Miller and experienced forward Luke Whitton coming off the bench. The Goondiwindi points scoring machine clicked into gear from the outset, scoring their first try after just five minutes, eventually leading 22 – 0 at halftime. Wattles found their feet after the break, actually winning the second forty minutes 14 – 12. The damage had been done in the early stages though, the “Boars” too good a side to salvage the necessary points to win. Hamish Moore’s try came in the 55th minute when Wattles had been trailing 0 – 28, Moore running off a pass from hooker Luke Miller. Dependable utility forward Luke Whitton showed sharp reflexes to touch down from dummy half with 20 minutes remaining, while David Cartmill’s try gave the Wattles total some further respectability. Both Dingle and Burns finished the match having scored two tries apiece. Wattles held a handy lead at half time, 24 – 12. Their first try came after only three minutes when Dylan Burns intercepted a

pass to run 60 metres to touch down. While the “Boars” returned fire within minutes, lock forward Liam Ross took a ball thirty metres out from half Mark Duggan and ran an ideal line beating many defenders on his way to scoring under the posts. Jake Dingle claimed his first try strolling over virtually unhindered from 10 metres out in the 23 rd minute, allowing Wattles an 18 – 12 lead. Three minutes later Dylan Grady took the ball from a scrum win 20 metres out and took two defenders with him as he muscled his way over the line to have Wattles leading confidently at the mid way hooter. With the second stanza barely under way, Liam Ross barged his way over to score from a penalty tap to set Wattles on the road to victory at 28 – 12. Wattles Warriors host Super Saturday against the BoarsThe Junior Warriors commenced Super Saturday playing games against the Goondiwindi Boars. It was a superb day for footy and the games were keenly contested. Following the junior games the Wattles Seniors completed the day.Flynn Electrical U 7's - The Warriors lent the Boars some players and everyone played well. It was a tryfest for the Warriors with Lachlan Meacle 4, Sam Scott 4, Riley Lever 4, Jackson Pogany 2, and Elijah Hall all scoring. Michael Shingles was very unlucky not to score being tackled just short of the line after a great run. The tackles were effective with Ben Willett, Harry McMahon and Jacob Meddleton were always in the action. Liam Ruhle had a good game and picked up the Foodworks award for his effort. Harry McMahon won the Hungry Jacks and Elijah Hall the Red Rooster award. Great game guys with good sportsmanship displayed by the Warriors

in helping Goondiwindi with players.Wattle Brae U 8’s - The eights played a game between two Wattles teams as the Boars failed field a side. The lads played hard with some great running and tackling. Some nice tries were scored and the tackles were good. Welcome to Zac Balfour this week in his first game in the Green and Gold and he was in the action with some powerful runs. Jack Bashford, Jaedan Ruhle, Declan Sullivan, Aaron Stace, Dan Brown and Marcus Obergruben all received a mention in the coach’s report this week for trying hard and playing well. Award winners: Foodworks Caleb Pratt, Red Rooster Jack Bashford. As the weeks go by the forwards are learning the value of straight running, taking on the defence. Allora Bowls Club -The Club Triples and Pairs Finals were contested and decided last Saturday in absolutely ideal playing

conditions. The triples combination of A. Slatter, L. Patto and G. Patto were too strong for J. Chandler, T. Shields and A. Jakins, and came away with a well deserved win. The afternoon session saw the pairs final played between A. Slatter and G. Patto vs. J. Chandler and A. Jakins with a form reversal from the earlier game giving J. Chandler and A. Jakins a win in this event.Congratulations to all finalists and it is now only the A Grade Singles to be decided for the 2009 season.For all committee members, please remember our next bowls meeting has been moved forward to work out details for the two day bowls carnival in June. The ball is travelling through the hands with more fluency and as a result the outside backs are making inroads. Hounslow-Cullen with 3 tries and Lachlan Henry 1 were the scorers. Henry, Brady and Jacob Willett kicked conversions. The defensive effort across the field can be improved and when the team brings this aspect of the game together will be an even more formidable combination. Clifton Auto Ag U 11's - In a tough, tight game Wattles emerged victors by 10 to 6 after leading 4 nil at half time. It was an excellent performance from all players who kept tackling the opposition at times under immense pressure. Kyle Catling who led the hitups, Charlie Dennis, Nick Van Der Poel and Trent Henry all played well in a performance when the whole team deserves a mention. The backline moved the ball well and Coby Blades, Jake Ranger and James Gilmore were elusive often making good ground. The tries were scored by Trent Henry and Nick Van Der Poel with Van Der Poel kicking a conversion to round out the Warriors 10 points which on the back of a great defensive effort were enough to seal the win. The Foodworks award went to Charlie Dennis, Hungry Jacks Michael Kelk and Red Rooster Coby Blades. Well done lads.Ryanie for Tyres U 12's - The team played to the plan this week to control the ball and scored a comfortable 28 to nil victory. Man of the Match Paul Christensen was terrific tearing into the defence with gusto and was rewarded with a super try in the opening minutes running 50 metres through the forwards. He was well supported in the middle by fellow forwards James Moore, Joe Willett and Max Rubie. Jordan Humberdross was more involved this week in a pleasing effort and hooker Harry Shooter put in an improved effort in defence. Halves Tom Morris and Liam Duncan controlled the play and topped the tackle count. The defensive effort right through the team was good with everyone sharing the load. The Boars attacked the flanks and Parry and Dyball were often called on the shut down attacking raids. Mason Blades was a handful with the ball and centres Robert Bradfield and Bannister played very well. Tries to Blades, Christensen, Bradfield, Moore and Willett 2. Foodworks Paul Christensen, Hungry Jacks Tom Morris, Red Rooster Jordan Humberdross.Wildcat Earthmoving U 13's - Goondiwindi won a close game 28 to 24 coming back from an 18 to 4 deficit at half time. The first half was all Wattles as they run in some great tries however the defensive effort and some lost ball in the second stanza let the boars back into the match. Joe Morris was everywhere and played well topping the tackle count. The forwards were led by Max Somes, Dalton Neilsen and Lachlan Downey who played much better this week running the ball with intensity. Josh Sharman was another to improve taking the hitups when required. Somes scored a double with one a fine effort on the last tackle busting through beside the posts. Christensen at hooker was strong scoring a good try. Neilsen scored the Warriors other try and all were converted by Will Bashford in a great display with the boot. Jordan Lewis put in a fine game and picked up the Hungry jacks award. The Foodworks went to Josh Sharman and Lachlan Downey won the Red Rooster. Well done guys. It was a close and exciting game.Rod Frahm Real Estate U 14's - The team won by 20 to 16 in an improved display against a good Boars outfit. Fullback Jeremy Wright was outstanding saving 3 certain tries and injecting himself into the backline at opportune times. Mitchell Duff continues to impress with one super bust downfield shedding tackles over 30 metres. Bryan Butler and Joe Hibberd both put their hand up in improved performances. Defensively Nick Morris, Brodie Sharman and Tom Henry were solid with good support from all players. Sharman showed his class scoring 3 tries and Matthew Denny powered his way over as well. Sharman’s 2 conversions completed the scoring.Foodworks Tom Henry, Hungry Jacks Jeremy Wright, Red Rooster Brodie Sharman.CJR Plumbing U 16's - The Boars won 58 to 12 in a clash which saw the Warriors giving away a big size advantage. Whilst not winning the game the team can all put their hand up and be proud of a committed and spirited effort right to the final whistle. The Warriors scored three good tries out wide with some fine ball work in the backs. Dale McAntee scored a fine try and made one magnificent try saving tackle when Goondiwindi looked in. Barry Sutcliffe scored a beauty after a bright passage of play down the blind side which saw the team progress the ball 60 metres in three tackles. Jesse McDougall finished off another movement out wide to complete the scoring. Coley, Wilson, Willett and Jack McAntee were busy in the pack with the combination of Tim Sharpe at hooker and halves Duggan and Henry leading the team well. At the end of the day the Boars were too big and too fast however the Warriors never gave in and can take heart from a sound performance.There are no fixture games this weekend. Next game for the Warriors is on May 29th against the Gremlins at Stanthorpe. See you all at training on Thursday afternoon.
