There was an exciting opportunity for some of our children this
week with the ABC Children’s Channel sending a production team
from interstate. The students were filmed doing a dance with
host, Grace Koh, some students did a Welcome to Tassie and 10
students were interviewed. Hopefully, these segments will appear
on TV in the future. Participants included: Anya Lokai, Renya
Atkins, Jayson Timms, Oliver Bonney, Madison Austen, Alice
Daveney, Jack Cook, Isha Dave, Will Sattler, Aiden Read, Hannah
Flanagan, Hari Eri, Georgia Campbell, Chelsea Bezemer, Dane
Plakalovic, Hugh Campbell, Holly May, Lauren Brooke, F’Romsa
Grant, Evan Gregon and Gabrielle Smalldon.
Four of our students also had the opportunity to be part of the
filming at Treetrop Adventures with Grace. None had ever been
before and all thought it was an amazing experience….. even if you
have to wait around a lot whilst the film crew gets organised. They
wore GoPros as part of the filming. Lucky participants were Tahni
Quick, Fazw Ahmed, Ilanna McDougall and Josh Corkery.
Reports
Just a reminder they go home with the students on Tuesday. If
you would like any follow up with the class teacher please
contact them.
LSSSA Cross Country
Well done to all the team who ran last Friday. Conditions were
very muddy but we had some wonderful efforts. A special
acknowledgement of the tussle between Mitchell and Beau for
2nd and 3rd – what effort and a whisker in it!
Riverside was the overall winner but our main competition, East
Launceston was very close behind.
Well done to those students who participated in the All Schools
Cross Country Championships at Symmons Plains. Special
mention to Jesse Deans who was a top ten finisher in his age
group. Full results will be available at www.tasathletics.org.au
Good luck to our Reader’s Cup team tonight in the Northern
Final.
I hope you can come along to our Poetry Assembly and Poems
in a Pocket. Unfortunately, I am working for the Professional
Learning Institute in Hobart this Thursday and Friday but I know
it will be a lot of fun.

BUS AND ROAD SAFETY Just a reminder that when students are getting off the bus on
their journey home that they wait until the bus has completely
driven off and it is clear to cross the road.
On Monday a student from Riverside Primary ran out from
behind a bus and crossed the road while a car was coming.
Remember until they are 10 children must always hold an
adult’s hand when crossing the road.

Registration to Work with Vulnerable People
If you volunteer at this school, you will be required to register for
“Registration to Work with Vulnerable People”. This will be mandatory by 1
September 2016.
For those volunteers who DO NOT have an existing Good Character Check, you need to
complete the WWVP process 1) online 2) go to Service Tasmania with your identification.
Please then bring in your application number for your WWVP to the school office. You will
then fill out a document which will ensure that you do not need to pay for your WWVP
Registration. If you have an existing good character check you follow the online/Service Tas
procedures and do not need to sign the additional paperwork at the office.
In July 2014 the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act 2013 commenced in Tasmania.
This registration aims to significantly improve safeguards to help keep children safe from harm.
Under the new legislation:
Employees and volunteers must apply for their own Working with Vulnerable People
Registration (RWVP) once every three years.
Employers can check a person is registered using the Tasmanian Department of Justice (DoJ)
website at http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/working_with_children.
The same RWVP will apply to everyone – employees, self-employed people and volunteers.
There are two forms of Registration they are Volunteer Class and Employment/Volunteer class
registration. This second class allows a person to both work and volunteer with children.
Everyone with registration will be continuously monitored for serious offences.
It is extremely important that staff and volunteers are registered and that their school or business unit
is recorded against the registrant. This information is used to communicate decisions about the
suitability of people to work with children. This information can be checked and recorded using the DoJ
website using the registrant’s registration number and surname.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR RWVP?
1. Complete the online application form. This is available from the website:
http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/working_with_children. It is critical that you choose
Department of Education from the drop down box. DO NOT PAY
2. Print the ‘application receipt’ which is generated when the application has been completed in full
(if you do not have access to a printer, record the reference number and take that to a Service
Tasmania Shop).
3. Take the ‘application Receipt’ to a Service Tasmania Shop, have your photo taken and have your
identity confirmed. You will need to satisfy the identity requirements. A driver’s licence will do
this if it displays your correct name and address. Advise the staff that you are a volunteer with
DoE and ask for a deferred payment. DO NOT PAY. The bill will be sent to DoE.
4. The Tasmanian Department of Justice will assess and process applications and issue the
Assessment Notice and Working with Vulnerable People Registration card directly to the
applicant.
Generally applicants will receive their results within six weeks of completing the application process.
There may be delays, however, depending on the applicant’s personal information.

LSSSA CROSS COUNTRY Last Friday was a true cross country day with muddy, wet and cold
conditions for our students to run around the track at Waverley
Primary School. Many students from other schools crossed the
finish line, lucky all of ours finished with both shoes still on!
It was a tight race between Riverside and East and we just made it
over the line.
Congratulations to the following grades who won the teams
events:
Grade 5 Girls, Grade 5 Boys, Grade 4 Boys, Grade 3 Girls
Congratulations to the following students who placed first in their
event:
Callie Griffin Grade 5 Girls
Will Bottle Grade 5 Boys
Jesse Deans Grade 4 Boys
Isabelle Farquhar Grade 4 Girls
Cross Country is very much a team event and we congratulate all
runners on their effort and participation. We say thanks to our
school community who braved the weather to cheer our team on.
It is always greatly appreciated.
GIVE ME 5 FOR KIDS The Core Leaders would like to thank the Riverside School
Community for all their efforts in our PJ day and helping hands this
year. We raised a total of $1165 for this worthy cause.
To make our efforts even more appreciated we are the school in
the state that raised the most money, for the second year running.
Our students will be presenting the cheque live on Southern
Cross on Tuesday 5 July.
Well done Riverside!

RPSA NEWS (Riverside Primary School Association Inc)
REPORT FROM THE JUNE RPSA MEETING
It was a relatively short meeting on Monday night with much of
the discussion being focused around the recent communication
strategy workshop, approval of the school budget and the
forthcoming compulsory working with children requirements.
The school recently undertook a communication strategy
workshop to consolidate how various media and platforms are
to be utilised by the Riverside Primary community. The
outcomes from this were presented to the meeting and will be
publicised over the coming months. Additionally, the association
has set up a new email account [email protected] that should
enable us to improve the timing and process of sending and
receiving communication. Finally a reminder that on September
1st it is compulsory for any volunteer in the school to have a
“registration to work with vulnerable people” check. Not having
enough volunteers with this registration will have a huge impact
on many aspects of our current functions, including how, when
and what fundraisers we can hold (yes you need the registration
to simply turn sausages at a BBQ), being on a committee as well
as purely helping in your child’s classroom or assisting with
excursions. Please see the notice in the newsletter and get the
process started ASAP!
Please note that the next meeting is on Monday 25 July, we
hope you can make it.
