Requests for displays should be directed to the Curator of the PHILAS Collection and at least two months notice is required for a display. A second choice should also be indicated, as the first collection may not be available. It is not advisable to include a specific PHILAS display on the Club Programme without first booking it with PHILAS, as the required material may have already been booked by another club. The Nita Wilson Collection of Privately-ordered Aerogrammes in 4 volumes, including Mrs Wilson’s correspondence and mint and used aerogrammes is available for research in PHILAS House only. CLUB PACKS consist of world stamp lots (sets and singles) ready for sale at club meetings. PHILAS Club Pack provides many benefits to clubs, but it is necessary to book your “Club Pack” at least two months in advance from the Convener, PHILAS Club Pack, PO Box 220, Darlinghurst NSW 1300. THE PHILAS LIBRARY is a specialist philatelic library containing over 6000 books, journals and catalogues. Much of this has been built up from donations and the many donors are warmly thanked for their contributions to the hobby. The PHILAS Library Inc now has Donated Gift Recipient status with the Australian Taxation Office, and all donations over $2 are tax deductible. The library is open to the public for research purposes Tuesday and Saturday 9am to 3.30pm, and at other times by appointment. Most books may be borrowed, for up to one month, by members of affiliated societies. Country members can arrange to borrow items through their society secretary. Please remember that these PHILAS services are provided on a volunteer basis, and these people have numerous demands on their valuable time. Services will be provided if possible, but please give at least two months notice. Please direct all correspondence to the Secretary of PHILAS, PO Box 220, DARLINGHURST NSW 1300.

PHILAS NEWS 3 June 2016

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:

I recently had a problem getting back into Philas House after attending an AFL game at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It was late at night and my key would not work, so I left the car there and went home by train. The following Tuesday, I asked questions of other key holders, and they too were having problems with the front door lock. A check with the Fink Group upstairs revealed that they too were having problems. After several phone calls, a locksmith was contacted and we now have new door locks on the front grille, the front door, the Ground Floor fire door and the door to the garage. They are all common keyed. If you hold meetings at PHILAS House, make sure you have been issued with your new key to gain access to the building. You will still need your flat magnetic key to open the doors into the First Floor meeting room and the kitchen. The problems with the lift will be fully resolved by the end of the year. A quote from Schindler Lifts has been accepted and they have been asked to proceed with the construction and installation of a new lift system. The Fink Group and we have signed the necessary contract documents and are awaiting the receipt of our copy of the contract. The old lift will be operating at the next auction in July, but the new lift will be installed before the auction in November. This, of course, assumes that there will not be any hold-ups along the way. The next task will be the outside building sign and the board in the building entrance. These are being worked on at the present and, as soon as the details are agreed upon, this work will proceed. It should be completed fairly soon. The position of Honorary Treasurer has now been filled, and we welcome Peter Myers to that position. John Batson can now go back to being our Assistant Treasurer and can relax until we have need to call on his services should an emergency arise. Peter is well-known to many of us, being a regular Tuesday volunteer of many years standing. Let us hope that his tenure will be a long and happy one. PHILAS has taken delivery of two new printers which have replaced the two units we have been using for the past couple of years. The larger of the two reportedly will print, collate and staple the entire auction catalogue, saving us the time and manpower to do the final assembly and stapling. Opposed to that, its output of complete catalogues will be slower than the output from the previous printers, where the body

was printed on one machine and the covers on the other machine. The catalogue for auction 124 will be printed shortly, and this will be a good test of the machine’s capabilities. Hopefully, it will work as stated, and the print run for the catalogues will be successful. The printer in the Library was not replaced on this occasion since it does not do a lot of copies. The PHILAS Library is steadily growing, from the purchase of new books, purchase of books from individuals and from estates and from donations of books and journals from various sources. It is an asset that contains a wealth of knowledge that is available to any member of any affiliated Club or Society. Most books are available for borrowing, the borrowing time being one month. Those books that cannot be borrowed are available for research only, in the Library. Currently, we are listing on the computer all the journals that are held in the Library. This is a massive task because of the range of journals held, and it will time some considerable time to complete. Club Pack is available to all affiliated Clubs, even though it was originally designed to assist the country clubs. If any Club wants to make use of this facility, please give us the time to assemble the pack and get it out to you. We would prefer to have two months’ warning for your request to give us the assembly time. PHILAS holds a large range of collections that are available for Club displays. A number of collections have recently been donated to us, so the number of collections we hold is growing. Remounting of some collections is in progress, so please check for what is available at the time required to avoid missing out on the display that you need. Work is proceeding on some major collections we have received, and these will be added to the list after they have been properly mounted and annotated. Contact the PHILAS Library for the list of available collections.

The PHILAS Open Days by John Sadler

Saturday 18th June 2016 PHILAS has a number of philatelic collections, many of which are listed on page 2 of this journal. These collections are available for display at any club or society meeting, with two months notice. To make clubs more aware of the quality and content of these collections, we are planning to put one such collection on display at the June Open Day each year. In 2016 it is intended to show Nita Wilson’s manufactured airmails, privately-ordered aerogrammes. If there is a particular collection that you would especially like to see on display, contact David Collyer by email on [email protected], or by telephone on (02) 9817 1680.

Saturday 15th October 2016Following the success of the Open Day in October last year, it is not surprising that Smithfield has again put its hand up to host a similar event in 2016. However, this time all clubs should make a concerted effort to ensure that the ten frames are filled. So if your club did not enter a team last year, start planning now for this year. Surely, every Club can find three members who can put together eight sheets of interesting philatelic material. So start forming teams now. The entries don’t need to be top quality or extremely rare material - popular vote quite often leans towards the most attractive, colourful and unusual, the display that says “look at me”.

PDC REPORT TO THE PHILAS EXECUTIVE COUNCIL April 2016

Exhibitions: Carl Verdich attended the February 2016 PDC meeting to discuss the Sutherland Shire PS Show prospectus. Today’s meeting will look at the issues arising from this meeting. There were 4 positive responses to the call for nominations for the APF’s Judges Course in October and these will be sent to the APF.

PDC: Danny Jurd has resigned as the PDC’s APTA representative. Ed Wolf has asked Stewart Robbins to nominate a replacement.

Youth Report: The planning day for the April SYSG Open Day will be held on 5th April. The theme is “Space”. The PDC prize donation for the Canberra Stamp Show was awarded to the best Youth Exhibit, NZ Definitives 1975-80 (Gold, 89 points) by Amy Rosenfeldt from New Zealand.

Report on the Youth Workshop of 21 April 2016

Paul Storm welcomed 18 Seniors to the workshop. They commenced the day by viewing a Space Collection presentation given by Mal Nicholson and completing a questionaire based on the display, and then completed a timeline and nationality quiz based on the display. This session was followed by a catalogue exercise based on Australian space stamps. All seniors then prepared a display page on Space utilising materials provided. After lunch a buying and swapping session was enjoyed, followed by an exercise of mounting stamps on an album page and adding a neat write up for each stamp. The day concluded with a quiz on Australian Space stamps.

Lenore Callender welcomed 18 Juniors to the workshop, noting that several had moved on to the seniors workshop. The day’s activities commenced with learning how to use mounts to place stamps in albums. This session was followed by viewing and listening to the presentation on Space Exploration Stamps provided by Mal Nicolson and the completion of a quiz based on the display. A catalogue quiz followed based on Australian stamps related to space themes. After lunch the juniors enjoyed a swapping session, then they designed and completed a display page on Space Stamps choosing philatelic materials from those provided. This exercise proved to have the juniors so involved that the normal group activities were abandoned and the day finished with the juniors completing a “Spot the Difference Exercise” in their workbooks and a quiz on Space stamps.

Australian Commonwealth Updatefrom the Australian Commonwealth Collectors Club (ACCC)

There is plenty of Philately happening now in Australia that can update catalogues and journal articles. The ACCC publishes a Bulletin four time a year that includes some information that is only available at Club meetings. It includes accounts of displays given at Club meetings. The club has three Study groups:

King George V definitive; Kangaroo Definitive; Modern Philately. At each meeting members display “items of interest”. For information about the club please write to ACCC PO Box 227 Darlinghurst NSW 1300.

REPORTS: December 2015King George V Heads - M. Drury has been appointed as the new convenor, replacing Lance Skinner after many years in the position. R. Vadas reported that stamp one from pane one (I/1) of the penny reds has finally been plated and does have a minor constant variety.

Modern Philately - the postal system in Australia changed from 4th January. There will be three speeds of delivery and the basic rate increases to $1. The new speed (the old normal speed) will require a self-adhesive Priority label which are 50c.

January 2016Modern Philately - David Collyer reported that various Post Offices in Adelaide were supplied with an emergency printing of Kangaroo & Koala CPS 30c values to make-up for a shortfall in the supply of 30c stamps needed for the rate increase. Barbara Hancock reported that the 30c Crocodile definitive from 1994 has been reprinted as the make-up value for use with 70c stamps for the rate increase. These are 2-Kangaroo reprints which is possibly a record.

ITEMS OF INTEREST December 2015Richard Peck showed a promotional item from Australia Post for the Christmas period, a discount Express Post satchel with a festive theme. The $13.00 for 1kg satchel appeared to be only available for two weeks and was little used.Richard Peck also showed a cover posted 14th December with one of the new Priority labels.Frank Anderson showed the KGV Anniversary booklets issued during 2015.

January 2016David Burke showed three covers with TPO postmarks from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s, the one from 1982 was one of the few remaining TPOs at the time.Carl Macks showed a 1½d red-brown KGV Single Watermark with the watermark so displaced that only the marginal line and marginal watermark letters were visible and none of the crown.David Collyer showed newspaper clippings about a postie who is an artist and the late replies received from the Santa Mail service.David Collyer also showed a postmark from a CPA (Community Postal Agency) which are usually located in remote rural locations with small populations, however, there are CPA’s in the Sydney suburbs of Glebe and Turramurra. He also showed the pamphlet from Australia Post outlining the new postal service changes.

February 2016Richard Peck showed an example of one of the 30c Adelaide 2016 emergency CPS stamps on cover plus a strip of 6 showing the six different designs.Barbara Hancock showed a block of 25 of the 30c Crocodile stamps which is now in its tenth reprint (two Kangaroos in the margins), having first been issued in 1994. She also showed a Postage Paid cover that had been incorrectly delivered.David Collyer showed a cover hand-stamped ‘Insufficient Address’, however, with an apparent complete address.Paul Storm showed a range of FDCs he had prepared for the 2015 Christmas issue with various combinations of the issued stamps and special formats only available in limited-release collectors’ folders.

DISPLAYS December 2015There were two presentations. The President’s annual display by David Collyer was of World War II Airmail into and out of Australia. The exhibit showed the changing routes that were necessary with the escalation of the War. From 7th December 1941 there were no fixed routes for the passage of airmail in and out of Australia and many novel and long routes were necessary.Geoff Kellow presented the high-quality colour copies of proof material from the Reserve Bank’s archival collection of Note Printing Branch material.

January 2016The display was by Tony Griffin of the ‘Faith in Australia’ Flights of 1934-1938. The exhibit showed the various flight covers flown for this service. The flights were from Australia to New Zealand, Papua and New Guinea and initiated by flight pioneer Charles Ulm. Covers on display showed the various routes and aircraft that were involved in this initiative

February 2016The display was a joint effort by Club members on the theme of ‘Stamps Printed in Australia for Foreign Countries’.Richard Peck - examples of meter imprints from Pacific Islands that had meter machines supplied from Australia.Barbara Hancock - from the 1980’s up to 1995 80% of NZ stamps were printed by Leigh Mardon in Australia and a set of 1996 definitives was printed by Cambec. Leigh Mardon also printed a booklet for Canada and Cambec printed stamps for South Africa and Jersey.Ian Fuary - Papua and PNG had many of their stamps printed in Australia, stamps from British New Guinea were also overprinted ‘Papua’ in AustraliaAndrew Brockett - covers from NZ with the 6d Kingsford Smith and Churchill joint-issues.Lionel Savins - some NZ stamps from the 1930’s were printed in Australia, these included the Health Issues as well as the 1936 ANZAC issue.Geoff Kellow - extracts from the Reserve Bank Note Printing Branch archives with notes on the printing and supply of stamps to foreign nations.David Collyer – The Dutch East Indies low value definitive produced in Australia after WW II.

Orange Coin and Stamp Expo

Our 2016 Expo was held in the Kenna Hall on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th April 2016.It was everything that we had anticipated. Perhaps it didn’t have the crowds we might have had twenty years ago, but the numbers of visitors were quite pleasing – Expo 2016 was no failure. The dealers seemed happy with their sales. The displays were excellent. Most importantly, all the participants seemed to have a good time. What we did miss this year was the youth activities table. Unfortunately Audrey Ferris has been dealing with a medical issue and was unavailable. We wish her well in her recovery. . A huge thanks goes out to all those Club members who assisted on the front door table and in the kitchen.

A general view of the Expo.

CENTENARY OF THE POSTAGE STAMP, 1840 by Richard C Peck, MAP, ACCF

This centenary was held during World War 2 which undoubtedly limited the scope and type of celebrations.

What is interesting though is who and what commemorated the event. Many of the following issues were issued for small local stamp shows.

Great Britain issued a series of 5 stamps which were also overprinted for Tangier & Morocco Agencies. Perkins Bacon & Co engraved a first day cover and two sheets for the exhibition, also overprinted for the Red Cross. The Royal Philatelic Society held an exhibition in aid of the Red Cross and St John Fund and the Philatelic magazine issued a slogan on its postage meter. There were also private first day covers but one which depicted a ‘penny black’ at full size, thus contravening postal regulations, had to be defaced! The 27th Philatelic Congress of GB issued a pair of labels, also seen overprinted for the recent 2015 exhibition! Occupied Jersey issued a bogus overprint on the GB set, often forged. Robson Lowe issued a little booklet The Stamps of London depicting pre-stamp postmarks and facsimile Mulready envelope designs. The British Pavilion at the 1940 New York World’s Fair had a catalog and minisheet and the USA first day cover included the famous stamp. The Postage Stamp Centenary Committee held a show at the Mayflower Hotel, Washington DC. Souvenir sheets were printed by Waterlow & Sons for the May exhibition, also overprinted for the Red Cross appeal.

In the Bahamas, a special Sea Floor post office was opened with a special cover. The Union Philatelique de Montreal issued a Cinderella. There was an official postal slogan and at least one meter slogan. The Pacific International philatelic Exhibition in Vancouver had an attractive vignette. Burma overprinted one postage stamp.

In the USA there was a special meter slogan on a Mail-o-Mat machine the design of which was copied by several cachet makers. But there was also an explosion of Cinderella labels from stamp clubs (listed here in no particular order) many showing the ‘Penny Black’:

Balisea Inc, Stamp Clubs of Indiana & Kentucky, Philaterians of Chicago, Bay City PS & Saginaw Stamp Society, Buffalo NY, Hibbard & Co, ‘Hollypex’ Hollywood National Philatelic Exhibition, Desert Stamp Club Utah, McKinley Stamp Club Ohio, Rutland County Stamp Club VT, Medford Oregon, Madison SC Wisconsin (two colours, art deceau design), Collectors Club of NY, The Sun NY (booklet listing all known issues), Washington State PS, House of Farnum, NJ Philatelic Federation Inc, California Collectors Club, Assoc. of South Jersey Stamp Clubs, ‘Hapex” Kansas City MI, Wichita SC Inc, ABC Stamp Co, The Southern New England Federation of Stamp Clubs, Kenmore Stamp Co (several), Bison PS, Linn’s Weekly, Elmer E Long, Salem Stamp Society, Elmer Stuart stamp dealer, Frederick H Dietz and approved by the International Poster Stamp Society, Frank Desouza postmaster Medford Oregon, Oaklahoma PS, Twin City PS Minneapolis, Tatham Stamp Co Springfield Mass.

Some of these were later overprinted to encourage attendance at the World Wide philatelic Convention in Detroit in October as well as issues from Des Moines PS and for International Philatelic Week in November (variously overprinted) and 2nd Chicago Stampex.

Mexico issued a set of 10 stamps, Paraguay (4), Cuba (1), Bulgaria (2), El Salvador (3), Liberia (3 & overprints), Nicaragua (3), Dominica (2), Portugal (10 and minisheet), Turkey (4), Brasil (minisheet), Estonia (4 plus imperf versions). Cinderellas are also known from Agrentina, Assoc., Exposition Philatelic de Cordoba Argentina, Philatelique Montpelleraine France, Club Philatelique de Nice, Hungary (including cinderellas and meter slogans), Budapest, Hrvatske. Special postmarks are known from Bohemia & Moravia (bicolours), Italy (Milan), Denmark, Netherlands, Brazil, Switzerland. In Germany there were cinderellas from Nakskov Philatelistklubs Undstilling and for their own early stamp issues. Perhaps the most interesting is that the ‘Penny Black’ was featured on Mrs Stewart’s series of famous women!

The closest Australia got was a Cinderella issued by the All-Boro Collectors Club New York depicting an adaptation of our 1934 Hermes design. While the first meeting of the Australian Commonwealth Collectors’ Club of NSW was held in May 1940, there is no mention in the minutes of this centenary.
