Collaboration

UTS: Engage Event

Collaboration Meetings in China

HUAWEI Technologies

Microsoft Research

UTS: Engage is a showcase for research collaboration between leading UTS academics and their industry partners. Each event is themed around a specific discipline and national and international thought leaders from industry, government and academia come together to workshop some of the most pressing issues in their field.

The most recent UTS Engage event, held on 26 July 2012, focused on the theme of “Future Services, Industries and Productivity” and featured a number of high profile presenters including the Federal Minister, Bill Shorten. A case study booklet on “Big Data, Smarter Decision Making,” accompanied the event and showcased AAI. Please see the following link: http://www.research.uts.edu.au/engage/future-services/docs/uts-engage-big-data.pdf

In August 2012, Professor Longbing Cao and Dr Xinhua Zhu initiated collaboration discussions and gave presentations during Australia Week to major organisations in Shenyang and Dalian, China including Neusoft Corporation (one of the largest IT Solutions and Services providers in China with a global presence), Northeastern University (one of China’s designated high level “985 project” Universities), the broad-based Shenyang Normal University (SYNU), Liaoning University, and Dalian Maritime University.

The collaborative opportunities discussed with Neusoft included national grants applications, technical support, project consulting, short-term analytics training, and the AAI Analytics Masters Degree. The collaborative interests canvassed at the four Universities included student and early career academic exchange and possible research projects including an ocean freight project with the Dalian Maritime University.

Associate Professor Jian Zhang has been awarded a project from Huawei Technologies to develop a software platform for automatic human detection which is based on image/video processing technology that Jian and his team have developed at UTS. The technology will support Huawei’s hardware development in the video surveillance area for safety and security applications.

Associate Professor Jian Zhang recently attended the Microsoft Research (MSR) Faculty Summit in Seattle from 16-19 July 2012. Nine academics from Australia and New Zealand attended the summit. MSR Faculty Summits seek to unite academic researchers and educators with Microsoft researchers, product group engineers and architects to explore new opportunities and challenges in computer science research. During his visit, Jian forged a research collaboration project with the MSR Multimedia, Interaction, and Communication research group (MIC).

Education Context Free Grammars and Topic Models

A New Food Choice Model

An Innovative Online Advertising Model

On 10 August 2012, Professor Mark Johnson (pictured), the Director of the Centre for Language Sciences (CLAS) in the Department of Computing at Macquarie University gave a talk at the AAI Seminar Series entitled “Grammars and Topic Models”. The talk outlined the surprising connection between context free grammars and topic models and suggested novel ways of extending these models for the purposes of text data mining and information retrieval.

On 22 June 2012, Professor Joffre Swait, the Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Choice (CenSoC) and Research Professor in the School of Marketing, UTS gave an illuminating talk entitled “Are Food Choices Really Habitual? Integrating Habits, Variety Seeking and Compensatory Choice in a Utility Maximising Framework.” This talk challenged the view that consumers in supermarkets adopt decision strategies that minimize cognitive effort and outlined a conceptual and empirical model of choice which takes into account the factors that lead to decision strategies other than habitual selection.

On 5 July 2012, Dr Tao Mei from Microsoft Research Asia gave a talk entitled “Contextual Internet Multimedia Advertising” at the AAI Seminar Series. This talk gave an overview of the trends in online multimedia advertising and proposed an innovative advertising model which is driven by the contextual relevance of the online advertisement.
