Time for Giving

This is the time of year when many of us think about those who are in need. Of course, we want to help, but the ability to do so can be limited by our own financial circumstances. Even with limited funds, however, there are ways to help others.Keep it local. Call the clothing bank and ask what it needs. A few new shirts or a winter coat for a child can help a family that's struggling. Call the food bank in your area and ask what it's running out of. Add a few things to your own grocery cart, perhaps spending $5 on a weekly basis, and drop them off. Charities of all types are feeling the loss of donations, and they're stretched to the limit in the goods and services they provide.If you have the means, see about sponsoring a family for the holidays. There are privacy issues, and social-service organizations probably can't give you the names of the recipients, but chances are you can get a list of specifics a needy family would like to have. The social-service of-fice acts as the middleman and hands out the goods as the families come in.Unfortunately you need to watch out for the scams that constantly surface. If you get a call, beware. Anyone can dial your phone and ask for a donation. Get specifics, like a call-back number, and ask for literature if you haven't heard of the organization before. Check before you donate.If you'd rather write a check to a large organization and let it decide where it should go, there are ways you can determine whether your charity dollar is likely to be used on those in need. Here are two charity survey sites that can help you decide: Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org) is a good one. Charities are rated by their efficiency at using the donated funds. You can browse by category (and sort by rating or location) or get information on a specific one by putting the charity name in the search box.

GuideStar (www.guidestar.org) shows the Form 990 of charities. That form will help you determine how much of your donation will go to advertising and solicitations for even more donations.

Dishwasher Phobia

Q: My husband went to add dish-washer soap to the dishwasher yesterday morning, but instead of soap he accidentally put Zep commercial drain care into the soap dish -- and turned it on! Now I'm afraid to use either the dishwasher, or any of the dishes or silverware that came out of it. What should I do? -- Alice S., via e-mail

A: Check the drain cleaner bottle's label for either direc-tions on cleanup of the chemical, or the manufacturer's phone number. Zep also has a Web site at www.zep.com, where you can find information on that drain cleaner in the Products section under "General Maintenance," as well as a Contact Us section.My instinct tells me that -- if it's household-grade drain cleaner -- running the dishwasher through its full cycle several times while empty should clear it, and washing and drying the affected dishes and silverware with soap and water a few times should clear any residual drain cleaner. Wear rubber gloves while washing them, and keep the kitchen well-ventilated while the dishwasher is running.However, you don't have to do this if you're uncomfort-able. Like you, I'm a big fan of making absolutely sure the dishwasher and dishes are safe. That's why I would recom-mend contacting the company directly, either by calling the number on the label of the bottle, or contacting Zep through its Web site. If you don't get a satisfactory or timely answer, contact a plumber, who can either guide you through a cleanup process, or can come over to assess the situation and provide a solution that you can live with.

HOME TIP: For best results, run your kitchen's hot-water tap for a few seconds before starting the dishwasher to make sure the first water fill is hot.

Pumpkin Pie with Bourbon Whipped Cream

Store-bought pie becomes extra special with home-made, bourbon-laced whipped cream.

1/2 cup heavy or whipping cream1 tablespoon con-fectioners' sugar1 1/2 teaspoon bourbon or 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract1 prepared pumpkin pie1/2 cup(s) packaged spiced sugared pecans

1. In medium bowl, combine cream, sugar and bourbon. With mixer on medium speed, beat cream until stiff peaks form.2. Cut pie into 8 wedges. Top each wedge with a dollop of whipped cream and sprinkle with pecans. Each serving: About 420 calories, 23g total fat (9g saturated), 86mg cholesterol, 395mg sodium, 46g total carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 8g pro-tein.

"The Goliath Bone"by Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins(Mariner Books, $13.95)By Chris Richcreek

The problem with being a dead author is that your fan base often doesn't get the message when you release a new book, mainly because your fans thought you were dead.But death rarely seems to stop artists of all fields these days. And if anyone would know about death -- and, more specifically, about killing people -- it would be Mickey Spillane, the creator of hard-boiled private investigator Mike Hammer.Many Spillane aficionados might have already stumbled upon "The Goliath Bone," recently released in paperback. It is the first Mike Hammer novel since 1996's "Black Alley," and it's based on an extensive outline by Spillane before his death in 2006. Fellow writer (and Spillane friend) Max Allan Collins finished the story. "The Goliath Bone," whose title doesn't exactly shine along the lines of "I, the Jury" or "Kiss Me, Deadly," appears to be an ending point for an aging Hammer, who is about to marry his longtime secretary, Velda. In a story conceived by Spillane after the events of Sept. 11, Hammer faces terror-ists and international intrigue in a case involving what the title describes. The ending seems a bit farfetched, but also contains elements that are vintage Hammer.Collins has indicated that there are some more uncompleted Spillane writings, which means "The Goliath Bone" might not be the final book involving Hammer. That's good to know, because even Hammer describes himself in this latest outing as "a notorious old-time private eye half the public thinks is already dead." Indeed, they did think that. But apparently neither aging nor death can slow down Mike Hammer.

Don't Forget Fido During Holidays

It's that time of year again. The holidays are moving into full swing as we prepare for Thanksgiving, with Christmas and New Year's approaching fast. And amid all the bustle, it's important to remember our pets and keep them safe.Melanie Monteiro, the author of "The Safe Dog Handbook: A Complete Guide to Protecting Your Pooch, Indoors and Out" (Quarry Books) offers some important tips to keep dogs -- and other pets -- safe this holiday season and throughout the year.¥ Poisoning: Ingesting chocolate or sweets that contain in-gredients like raisins or xylitol (an artificial sweetener) can cause severe health complications and possibly death.¥ Choking: Small decorations, candy wrappers, holiday lights and wrapping papers are among the items that a pet can ingest and possibly choke on.¥ "Bolting": A pet can run away when alarmed, particularly at loud noises or when surrounded by unfamiliar people. A pet may run outside as you open the door, or may escape unnoticed while you're entertaining. ¥ Costumes: Antlers on a pup are cute, but make sure they aren't hurting it and that no small parts can fall off or be chewed off and ingested. Putting Out the Fire of Burning Tongue

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have burning tongue syndrome. At times, it is almost unbearable. The only thing that helps somewhat is a saltwater mouth rinse. My dentist, my inter-nist and a neurologist haven't offered any relief.I also get sores in my mouth and on my tongue. Any in-sight? -- P.H.ANSWER: Burning tongue syndrome is also known as burning mouth syndrome because the gums, roof of the mouth and lips also can feel like they are on fire. It happens mostly, but not exclusively, to women after menopause. Although painful and disturbing, it's not a health threat. No one knows the exact cause, but it might be that nerves serv-ing the tongue and mouth are malfunctioning. Let me give you a few home remedies for it: rinsing the mouth with cold apple juice; and combining equal parts Benadryl elixir and Kaopectate as a mouthwash. Don't swallow these rinses, and use them four times a day. Anoth-er remedy is six drops of hot pepper sauce (Tabasco sauce) in a teaspoon of water and swishing it around in the mouth

four times daily. It might increase the burning at first, but after a day or so it should lessen it. If it doesn't, abandon it.Don't eat or drink spicy or acidic foods or beverages. Don't use mouthwashes with alcohol in them. Change your tooth-paste brand. Chew sugarless gum.When burning mouth fails to respond to the above, the medicines Klonopin, Elavil or Neurontin might help.Have your doctors looked for things like dry mouth, B vi-tamin deficiencies, anemia, diabetes, lichen planus, thyroid problems and Sjogren's syndrome? Sores on the tongue and in the mouth are not ordinarily a part of burning tongue syndrome. Get to a doctor when the sores are present. Turkey Not Only Reason For

Thanksgiving NapAs you flop on the couch after that Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings, you might find yourself drifting into an afternoon nap.Some people say tryptophan, an amino acid found in tur-key, has proved itself to be an effective sleep aid, causing that post-Thanksgiving meal sleepiness.Tryptophan is a precursor of serotonin, a neurotransmitter produced in the brain that can affect mood, according to Delores Takemoto, a professor of biochemistry at Kansas State University. Serotonin can give you a calm and happy

feeling, making you more relaxed and able to fall asleep easier, she said. But Scott Beyer, a professor and poultry researcher at K-State, said that while scientific research shows tryptophan can make people sleepy, it's not the only reason for that post-Thanksgiving meal sleepiness.Only a small percentage of tryptophan can be found in tur-key, Beyer said.
