Speaker Cabling: Does it make a difference?One of the most fiercely argued debates in audio is whether super expensive speaker cabling sounds any better than cheap wire.When it came to our fortnightly training, this time on audio cabling, we agreed to simply not go there! We did, however, discuss a passive speaker interface called the AvT by MIT (Music Interface Technologies). In the audiophile world, MIT is one of the top names, offering the highest end products with equally high-end price tags. The AvT interface is however, a simple plastic box with a bunch of wires inside it. Yeah, there's a lot of science behind it (worth a read at MITcables.com), but it's a fraction of the price of other MIT products and seemed to suit our type of clients – smart, but not necessarily loaded with cash!The Test:Of the two training sessions, a blindfold A/B test was conducted with the same equipment hooked up to 2 pairs of the brilliant, but unassuming Tangent speakers (code

39819515). One pair was connected directly to the amp and the other had a MIT AvT interface connected in line.

The Result:Every attendee (most with little audio training) noticed a considerable difference and preferred the speakers connected to the MIT AvT. In fact, it was so successful that some attendees inspected our setup to ensure that we weren't cheating them!

Our Suggestion:Whether it's for yourself or a client, try out the AvT for the critical front and centre channel speakers. If you don't notice the difference, we'll happily credit them (less freight).

Introducing the Pro2 RedMere Series:Over half a decade and tens of thousands of Pro2 HDMI leads later, Pro2 is finally releasing their first high-end 'RedMere' range! This RedMere range will be available in conjunction with the current Contractor Series.

Revisiting the Contractor Series:The Pro2 Contractor range is based on the principal of 100% reliability, usability and signal integrity, while also being the latest standard.As an importer, you can compete on price by using lower grade materials (comprising of aluminium or steel), thinner gauge cables (30AWG) and older standards (v1.1, v1.2 or 1.3). You can even demonstrate that they work between sources and displays with the knowledge that HDMI has technologies built into it that will correct for most errors. Furthermore, the newer standards won't apply to most users, so why pay more? The issue is, what happens when you split signals, increase cable lengths or buy newer technologies in the future? At this point, an installer will inherit an angry customer and end users will have to troubleshoot the issue back to a newly defunct HDMI lead. The Contractor Series was developed to meet all these demands and scenarios, yet priced so that our clients would be able to more than compete!

So why pay more for the RedMere Series?The drawback of the highly engineered Contractor Series is that size and flexibility needs to be sacrificed. With super slim TVs and AV Receivers that need to accommodate more and more HDMI cables, the Contractor Series is sometimes too bulky. To develop a smaller cable that offers the highest performance, we needed to incorporate a miniature circuit board, developed by RedMere of Ireland, that will pass the full 10.2Gbps uncompressed signal over a cable that is around 55% smaller than an equivalent passive cables.

What's the target market?It's ideal for data cable (Cat5e or Cat6). The soft, elasticity means that pressure is spread over the cable and it won't dig into the cable. That means, you won't compromise cable speeds, which in turn means a better IT network.
