8 THETALK / July/August / 2015

Condolences!

To begin with, we would like to wish our readers and everyone a Blessed

Ramadhan to you and your loved ones!

We have recently experienced a tragedy that struck Kuwait and there are no

words that can describe this atrocity and how it contradicts with our values

on all levels.

We would like to take this opportunity to present our sincere condolences

to the families that have lost their loved ones; may their souls rest in peace

and may God give you patience and strength.

An act that aimed to divide a nation was the strongest reason to unite it

together tighter and stronger than ever. We pray for this bond to remain

powerful until we overcome this distress.

May our beliefs always lead us to peace and may our strongest weapons be

our unity and productivity. May we always prioritize a sense of humanity that

conquers brutality and paves the way to the safe shore of prosperity.

They have hurt us but they will not stop us. We shall continue, unafraid, we

shall work, we shall pray, we shall visit family and friends regularly, our life is

stronger than their ploys.

Sincerely,

THETALK team

Each Piaget design plays on the fluidity of materials and the radiance of light, thanks to the exceptional talent of our jewelers and gem-setters. Each Piaget design gives way to a new emotion: from diamond drops that trickle down the neck, quivering foliage that embellish and frame the face and the firework-like explosion of gems. Very special care is given to finishes to provide long-lasting comfort and flexibility to the wearer. The various professions involved in the design of a piece work in close proximity to provide prompt communication and responsiveness. By taking all technical and aesthetic constraints into consideration for each new stage in jewelry production, our technical expertise is fully focused on excellence in design.

Gemology: the search for complete transparencyOur gemologists travel around the world in search of rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds. With an array of princess, brilliant, marquise, and oval cuts, our precious gems meet the highest standards in color, carat weight and clarity. Nearly 30,000 carats of precious gems are set each year in our workshops. All diamonds are tested according to stringent in-house guidelines. Nothing escapes the scrutiny of our experts at Piaget Manufacture.

Piaget has been pursuing a rigorous ethics and environment policy for several years. The brand only uses diamonds that comply with the Kimberley Process. Each precious centre gemstone is delivered with a certificate. By fully integrating production processes, Piaget maintains total design freedom and is able to produce pieces that reflect the designer’s original intent as closely as possible.

Gold carving: the architects of dreamsAt the Piaget Manufacture, designers, gemologists, gem-setters and jewelers work together in perfect harmony. Passion leads to excellence throughout all production stages, from the successful expression of an idea to the selection of rare gemstones, the most faithful interpretation of design sketches and the showcasing of gemstones.

A piece of jewelry is being created at one of the largest High Jewelry workshops in Geneva. A drawing is created and contours are revealed little by little. The carefully studied architecture begins to take shape, and gold is then painstakingly sculpted, adjusted, polished and buffed to reveal all of its glory. This is the moment of grace when the piece of jewelry comes to life. The gold is then enhanced by the brilliance of gemstones that a gem-setter sets with precision to perfectly showcase their beauty. Nearly 340 hours of work by

our designers, gemologists, gem-setters and jewelers are required to create this Fine Jewelry necklace.

Gem-settingPerformed in close collaboration with our designers, gem-setting is practiced as an art. Once the number of gemstones and their positioning have been determined, our craftsmen sculpt the metal to gradually reveal the setting in which a gemstone will be placed. Then they select the gemstone that will be adjusted with precision to fit within the created setting. This

thanks to the exceptional quality of their cut. - Carat: a wide range of diamonds including different carat weights, classified from 0.2 carats to over 3 carats. Piaget adds to these criteria the notion of ethics with regard to the origin of the diamonds selected.

Color: the brilliance of the most perfect diamond

The most valuable diamonds are pure white. To assess them, a scale evaluates the color of each stone from D (white) to Z (yellow). Piaget selects only the rarest diamonds graded between D and F for centre stones and G for pavés.

Clarity: the search for absolute transparency

The most spectacular diamonds are clear; no cloudy or crystal inclusions must affect their clarity. Each diamond is examined by Piaget gemologists using tools which provide 10 x magnifications of

the stone, in accordance with best practice.

Piaget only chooses diamonds classified at the

top of the clarity scale, between IF (Internally

Flawless), with no blemishes visible even under

10x magnification and VVS (Very Very Small

Inclusions), with minute inclusions invisible to

the naked eye.

F.L – I.F: Flawless or Internally Flawless – no

blemishes visible under magnification

V.V.S.1 – V.V.S.2: Very Very Small inclusions

V.S.1 – V.S.2: Very Small inclusions

S.I.1 – S.I.2: Small inclusions

I.1 – I.2 – I.3: Imperfect

Cut/the brilliant reflection of lightThe cut is the only criterion affected by

human hand and is of primordial importance. A

perfectly cut stone magnifies the light which is

reflected from one facet to another, giving the

diamond an unparalleled brilliance.

Thanks to their expertise, Piaget gemologists

select stones whose cut quality reveals the full

beauty of the diamond.

Piaget’s criteria for ideal proportions:

step is repeated with each gemstone. Based on a piece’s design, our gem-setters opt for bead, claw, bezel, invisible, inset and channel settings in which brilliant, baguette, princess and pear-cut diamonds are combined. The precision and finesse of gem-setting and the refinement of polishing create pieces with unique character and perfect finishes. Once the gem-setter’s painstaking work has been completed, each gemstone is individually checked. At Piaget, precious gemstones are selected to beautifully adorn our jewelry pieces. Over two million gems are set each year in our workshops.

The 5Cs

Piaget chooses diamonds which combine the very best of the four criteria – the 4C – defined by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) in order to obtain an optimum result in terms of quality, aesthetics and finish: - Color: the rarest diamonds, pure white, graded between D and F. - Clarity: the clearest diamonds, classified between IF (Internally Flawless) and VVS (Very Very Small Inclusions). - Cut: diamonds which brilliantly reflect the light

Carat/the measure of a perfect diamond

One carat is equal to 0.2 grams, or the weight of a carob seed (the fruit of the African carob tree and once used as a unit of weight in gold trading). The higher the carat, the more precious the stone, provided of course that the best of the other three criteria are considered; this is the process used by Piaget.

Conflict free and Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC) or ethical rulesPiaget is a member of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). This international project certifies and monitors all rough diamond transactions to ensure that diamond sales do not finance armed conflicts or criminal enterprises. Our commitment to the Responsible Jewelry Council is a further opportunity for Piaget to demonstrate its uncompromising diligence, as each diamond must comply with the strictest requirements. Piaget received RJC certification in September 2011 following a certification audit. In 2012, Piaget worked with the RJC to create a guarantee chain for gold and for platinum group metals.

The GIA certificate

The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is an independent international certification body established in 1931. It assesses the quality of stones impartially and according to precise criteria known as the 4Cs. Pursuing its insatiable quest for perfection, Piaget pledges to issue a gemological certificate

for each of its centre diamonds over 0.2 carats, providing a veritable guarantee that they score highly against the 4 criteria defined by the GIA.

Diamonds by PiagetRare, pure and eternal, diamonds are the ultimate symbol of love. It was in Europe in the 15th century that the romantic tradition of offering a diamond ring as a token of love and commitment was born. In 1477, Princess Marie of Burgundy received this first proof of love from Archduke Maximilian of Austria. She placed the ring on the fourth finger of her left hand as,

on the COVer

according to the Egyptian belief in the “vein of love”, the left ring finger is connected to the heart by this vein. Diamonds still symbolize love centuries later.

Light of love, sparkle of desire, reflection of a knowing lookFor almost 140 years, Piaget has had the highest regard for the diamond, that most exclusive of precious stones. Piaget seeks out diamonds which meet the highest color, carat and clarity standards. Nearly 30,000 carats of precious stones are set each year in our

Page 21: Issue 75 / JULY - AUGUST 2015

workshops. All diamonds are thoroughly tested according to stringent in-house guidelines. Each precious centre stone is issued with a certificate.

PlatinumA luminous, precious, stable metal which reflects the love of which it is a unique expressionFew metals are so obviously and inextricably linked with the notions of preciousness and timelessness. It is the infinitely subtle responsibility of platinum to retain the best

over time and encapsulate the symbols of

permanence in love, making it the perfect life-

long companion. Piaget combines platinum with

diamonds, whose brilliance it accentuates more

than any other metal. Platinum is cherished for

its modernity and simplicity and treasured for

the style it brings to the moment when two

destinies become one for all eternity – infusing

a promise of commitment with unfailing

elegance. Pure and stable, platinum remains a

timeless witness to the memorable moments

of your love.

What kind of a woman would wear from this collection? The elegant, classy, sophisticated and trendy.

What do you enjoy about Ramadan?I enjoy family gatherings, attending Ramadan gatherings, and catching up with old friends. I also love how ladies go over the top with what they are wearing, whether it is the kaftan itself, the jewelry, or the head pieces. In my mind, I call it Kuwait Fashion Month as in “Fashion Week” in London, Milan, or Paris.

Her designs this year are not just fascinating; they are luxurious masterpieces, richly embroidered with the upmost attention to every detail.

What colors did you focus on when designing your Ramadan collection for 2015?Ramadan season changes every year, and because it is summer, I focused on the trending colors this spring/summer season, and the trending colors that I focused on were Mango Yellow, Pastels, and Ombrés as these colors have been seen on the fashion runway quite a lot lately .

What fabrics do you like and which ones did you focus on? The fabrics that I like and have used in this collection are organza, lace, French chiffon and fine silk.

Do you have favorite pieces? Each piece I design says something about me and reflects my personality, and this is why every piece in any collection I design is going to be an all time favorite according to me.

Where did the inspiration for this collection come from?I am inspired by the dimensions of beauty in my designs and simple luxury which is distinguishable. Anything beautiful my eyes come across, I imagine

a painting on a canvas and give it life because I see every female beautiful and elegant in her own way.

Do you name your collections/pieces?Yes, I do give names to my collections. Before I start working on my collection, I always have a creative process that I follow before I start designing and that is when the name is selected. The name reflects the era or season of which I am deriving my inspirations from.

A word with thetalk

aSSOCiate reSearCh SCieNtiStcAreer And cAr pASSionFotouh AlRagom

There are Kuwaiti women who have put true effort for the development of their country and continue to do so till date. Fotouh AlRagom sets a great example for women who have had successful journey with education, work and other paths in life. In their respective field, Fotouh serves as an associate research scientist at the Building and Energy Technologies Department (BET) of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). She received her B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Kuwait University. And M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering,Thermo-fluids from Northeastern University at Boston, MA, USA. Her research interests include alternative fuels, renewable energy, alternative refrigerants, energy auditing and energy efficiency and conservation. Fotouh AlRagom has a sincere attachment to her BMW car which is her first car – she shared a very interesting story about this bond with THETALK in the following interview.

Can you tell us about yourself. My name is Fotouh Abdul Aziz AlRagom, I’m an associate research scientist – I work at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, I’m a mechanical engineer.I’m married and I have two children.

How did you develop this interest in such a mannish field? When I was in high school, I had a passion for solar energy and did different projects in school and I was interested to investigate this subject more and more. I was supposed to study architecture engineering, but I chose to study mechanical engineer because it is related to solar energy. The person who was leading the lecture told me that this is what I should be doing and my parents were very supportive.

Doesn’t mechanical engineering have to do more with cars and engines?Mechanical engineering is a bit different – it is a very huge discipline, one can study something related to air conditioning, cars, robotics, heat, mass and transfer. My heart was in solar energy and using it as an alternative energy.

Page 31: Issue 75 / JULY - AUGUST 2015

WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM 29

Where did you study?I finished my bachelor in Kuwait University and then I got my first masters from North Eastern University – Boston, Aerospace engineering was from University of Florida, Gainesville and so was my PhD.

Tell me about the challenges you confronted. You get challenged because you are a female; people can be supportive but will still question whether you are capable of doing something or not. Even in school, I had very supportive professors but sometimes I would walk into the class and I would be the only female. Sometimes you question yourself and wonder whether what you are doing is right. During that time, I decided that the car I wanted to buy after I graduate is going to be a BMW, so I joined a program that was held in the garage at Al Ghanim to learn more about the engines and the structure of the car that I wanted to purchase. When I went back to the states for my PhD, I had to leave my children and go back to studying again, but then I had to remind myself that this was my dream and I had to pursue it. It is also overwhelming to be representing a whole region.

Any challenges you encountered being a “woman”?I never encountered a challenge when I was told that I could not do something because I’m a woman. One has to constantly prove herself especially when she is representing not only herself, but her country abroad. I wouldn’t say that I have stood strong all the way, but at the weakest moments, I would always remind myself that I should keep going. As an engineer, I feel that I am always responsible for making things “better” and my job makes me feel like I’m getting paid to learn something new, meet new people and practice creativity. My message to people out there is to keep dreaming and keep following their dreams – you will always reach what you want if you just don’t give up.

“You will always reach what you want if you just don’t give up”

Tell us about your passion for your car.I developed a connection with BMW through the process of learning during the training course I enrolled in. My current car was the very first car I bought back in 1995 – it is a 318 grayish blue BMW. Although it’s not in a perfect condition, but I think it’s in a very good condition and I really love it.

What stopped you from replacing it over the years?I never faced any real problems with this car – it was always the routine maintenance. To me, this car is not just iron and steel; I have an emotional bond with my car.

Does it have a name?I named it Cindy after Cindy Crawford.

When do you think you would replace it?My car is 20 years old now, I have not decided to sell it yet but I’m open to the idea. I went and visited the showroom recently, I looked at different models and liked them but I don’t want

to trade it in. I sent a letter to the BMW General

Manager through e-mail suggesting that they take

my car and keep it in safe hands where I know it

should be. I’m not quite sure why I didn’t hear

back from them yet though.

How do you feel about sharing this story with our readers?Even if you think that this passion is weird, it’s

all about the connection that you have with

something and your loyalty towards it. Whenever

you have a deep passion towards something,

expressing it in the right way might encourage

people to do something about their passion too; I

think it is contagious and inspiring.

When you’re not working in the lab, what would you most likely to be doing?I like playing piano, I’m not a professional pianist

but I like it as a hobby. I like horse riding and

shopping.

The highlight of FABFEST was the chance to meet some of the top designers, and discover more about their brands and latest trends. One of the designers who visited Kuwait for FABFEST was Alberto Moretti, the luxury shoe designer known for his passionate creativity influenced by his vision of the woman. His signature boutique in Saint Tropez and collections at luxury fashion stores around the world feature the highest-quality Italian footwear. During FABFEST, Alberto shared his passion for designing shoes with THETALK editor, saying: “I take the heritage of shoe designing from my father who owns a factory for classic handmade shoes”. He added: “It is not easy to design an attractive pair shoes with high heels that is also comfortable. I work a lot to make that happen – each millimeter can change the proportion of the pair; it’s all about the little details”. Also attending FABFEST were renowned jewelry

As a pioneer of the statement-making jewelry movement in the early 1980s, Manevitz brings his love of art to his collections by working with fine, unusual materials such as lucite, pewter, glass and crystal to create unique, innovative and inspirational designs. All you need to k now about concealers and correctors

will only highlight the imperfections. Yellow-toned foundation that matches the skin tone is the best way to adequately cover blemishes, scars, and tattoos.

The application of under-eye concealer is the most important step in any makeup routine. Concealer is the one product that, when chosen and applied correctly, can instantly lift and brighten the face. Choose a color one to two shades lighter than the foundation. The skin under eye is very thin, so the blue of the fine veins just under the surface tend to show through. A light yellow-toned concealer masks this blue discoloration and brightens the skin. For those with alabaster skin, a porcelain-toned concealer will work. Sometimes a stick foundation one or two shades lighter than the face can serve as an under-eye concealer for

those who need very little coverage.

Correctors are available for extreme under-eye darkness. When a regular concealer cannot fully lighten the under-eye area, a peach or pink corrector is used to counter the purple or green tone. A regular yellow-toned concealer is usually lightly layered over the corrector to lighten the under-eye area. Occasionally, those with extremely deep purple or green coloration under the eye will not need the layer of regular concealer.

TipsSome women need between two and four color that can be mixed and blended to accommodate changes in skin tone under the eye, which can vary with the same time of day, amount of rest, and hormones

Correctors brighten the darkest areas under your eyes, allowing concealers to both lighten and blend. Concealers should blend into your skin, lightening dark circles and instantly making you look better.

Concealers are the secret of the universeWhile concealers are available that cover tattoos, spots, blemishes, scars, redness and bruises, most people use a concealer to lighten dark circles under the eyes. Different concealers and correctors are formulated for each specific use. Pick a concealer and, when needed, a corrector designed for each of your problem areas. Under-eye concealers are not formulated for use on blemishes or areas of redness. They are creamier in consistency and lighter than the skin tone. Using under-eye concealer on areas of redness

Time is precious, something we often feel is in short supply. With the new Rado DiaMaster Grande Seconde on your wrist, however, you can be sure that every second counts and you won’t miss a beat.

A monobloc high-tech ceramic case houses a large open dial presenting two overlapping sub-dials, one for hours and minutes and one for seconds. The striking look of a separate seconds dial, marked at intervals of 5 in Arabic numerals, while the minutes and hours are marked with slight yet striking indexes, reminds the wearer that time is of the essence.

Beautiful to behold, the new Rado DiaMaster Grande Seconde collection is made of four eye-catching models, two in plasma high-tech ceramic with brown leather straps that exude a vintage

look, whereas the two black versions have an edgy futuristic feel to them This collection focuses on leather straps with only one model featuring the famous DiaMaster five link bracelet.

With its edgy yet retro design the Rado DiaMaster Grande Seconde is perfectly paired with a business suit or dressed down with casual weekend wear. The unconventional dial makes this timepiece, as well as the man wearing it, stand out. A watch to be worn with confidence, this is the ideal model for the man who dares to be different.

Modern Alchemy

A brilliant warm metallic shine emerges from white ceramic when treated in a plasma oven where gasses activate at 20,000ºC. This magical transformation is achieved thanks to a patented process first used by Rado. Without the use of any

metal the unique plasma colour emerges from each piece of ceramic and will not fade over time.

Although the colour only changes on the surface of the ceramic piece, it will not fade.

With this process Rado is able to offer metallic looking watches with all the comfort of high-tech ceramic. Scratch-resistant, light and hypoallergenic, the benefits of high-tech ceramic remain unaffected by the transformation.

Be the master of your time with the Rado DiaMaster Grande Seconde.

Red. The colour of speed, of challenge, of victory, of passion. Passion for motor racing, like that which runs in the veins of TAG Heuer, like that which drives its relationship with McLaren. 30 years this year. To mark this occasion, the Swiss watch brand is releasing a numbered limited edition of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 chronograph. In red, of course.

“Rocket Red”, to be precise; the tomato red inspired by McLaren’s 1985 campaign. It can be found on the aluminium bezel which features the tachometer function, engraved with McLaren. There

are also hints of it on the flange, notably the number “30” on the minute track, a nod to this highly symbolic anniversary. And, finally, it is featured on the Rocket Red and Black NATO strap. This highly resilient strap lends the piece a resolutely sporty look. It encircles the wrist, ensuring a comfortable fit for all. “TAG Heuer” is hot-stamped underneath, and the keepers, buckle and pin are made from 316L stainless steel. Both the ends of the strap and the buckle holes are laser-cut to ensure a high-quality finish.

The quartz chronograph movement is accurate to a tenth of a second, displayed on the small counter at 6 o’clock, with the chronograph minute counter at 9 o’clock and the current seconds counter at 3 o’clock; These three small snailed counters contrast with the opaline black dial, giving an impression of speed as they reflect back the light. The case back pays tribute to the TAG Heuer – McLaren partnership in incredible style: it features a profile view engraving of an MP4 from 1985.

Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 4MATIC: Instinctively different

As a new four-door coupé, the CLA follows the idea of the CLS-Class, whose design concept has spawned more than its fair share of imitators since its debut in 2003. With its frameless doors, the coupé adopts the design of the Concept Style Coupé into series production. The newcomer features a radar-based braking system (COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST) as standard, which is able to warn the driver of an obstacle from a speed of 7 km/h and to initiate precision braking when the driver steps on the brake pedal. “With its sporty design, exceptional Performance and new standards in aerodynamics, the CLA 250 4MATIC is expected to attract a whole new target

group of drivers and owners, promising high levels of driver enjoyment,” said Michael Ruehle, CEO, Abdul Rahman Albisher & Zaid Alkazemi Company. In keeping with its sporty positioning, the CLA 250 is available with high-torque turbo engines rated at up to 211hp (at 5,500 rpm), sports suspension and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The technical highlights of this new design icon include a new world record in aerodynamics for series production automobiles (Cd value: 0.22) and numerous driving assistance systems, including advanced COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST.

This radar-based assistance system provides the

possibly distracted driver with visual and acoustic warnings of identified obstacles and prepares Brake Assist for precision braking. Braking is initiated as soon as the driver steps emphatically on the brake pedal. When an impending danger of collision is identified, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST calculates the precise braking force ideally needed to avoid an accident and makes the best possible use of any distance remaining. As a new feature, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST affords protection from typical rear-end collisions in dangerous traffic situations in the CLA-Class from a speed of only 7 km/h (previously: over 30 km/h).

It’s been a successful start to the Global Rallycross season for Volkswagen and Andretti Motorsport in Fort Lauderdale (USA). The American Scott Speed came second in the Volkswagen Beetle GRC, while his teammate Tanner Foust (USA) finished in fifth place. After having difficulties on Saturday, the two-time Global Rallycross champion Foust started in last place, but clawed his way to the front and qualified for the final. Things went better for former Formula 1 driver Speed, who started in pole position in both heats and in third place in the final. “We’ve learned that winning a few races in the course of the year isn’t good

enough - you also have to finish a lot of races cleanly. We have got off to a good start and now we have to try to move up a step or two on the podium,” said Scott Speed. The season opener in Fort Lauderdale, which is otherwise known as the ‘Venice of America’, was won by the American Ken Block (Ford).

Designer Stubble

Also known as “five o’clock shadow” is a short growth of beard, aimed to affect

a rugged masculine of deliberately unkempt appearance that became popular in the 80’s. the best known of all ‘designer stubble’ wearers was George Michael.

Full Beard

A full beard that’s well groomed says you are the manliest of men. You are virile, self-confident and bold. It looks classy when your beard is groomed and rugged when it’s not. It requires very little maintenance and is arguably the most popular beard style.

Professional

Requires plenty of attention as you grow it; the hair must be kept shorter and the lines should be shaped tighter, this beard gives to your face definition and strong character. Make sure to shave the neck and create a defined underneath the chin. Stops midway up the cheek to and connects fairly evenly with the moustache line.

Captain Jack

The Captain Jack beard is a mix of moustache, Soul Patch and goatee-like whiskers, this style is a crowd pleaser indeed. If your facial hair grew so fast, you should regularly trim, shave and do daily grooming. The wax can help to keep the shape. The oil will make your beard and moustache look healthy. Always keep in mind to keep it clean.

Hipster Beard

Despite the rough appearance, growing a hipster beard requires a level of maintenance.

Some wearers prefer to avoid growing a “neck beard,” and therefore have to shave the upper part of the neck. Others also trim the moustache around the mouth. Some hipsters also cultivate traditional

“handlebar” moustaches, which can require extensive grooming and styling.

Van Dyke

A Van Dyke specifically consists of a short, pointy beard and a pointy moustache (often waxed), without hair on the side of the face. When done right, the Van Dyke is downright artsy. The Van Dyke Beard requires regular upkeep to maintain its unique look.

Used to moisturize the skin under the beard in order to keep it soft, shiny, and smooth, it acts as a moisturizer that goes from growing brittle especially in cold and windy environments. Hydration around this area helps prevent flaking, dandruff and skin dryness.

Moustache Wax

Moustache wax is stiff pomade applied to a moustache as a grooming aid to hold the hairs in place, especially at the extremities. The required product – or stiffness – is based on whisker length and the desired style. It can also have restorative properties, which become more important as the hair length increases.

If you grew up in a house where red meat and butter always took center stage, then healthy cooking techniques might feel a bit strange in your kitchen. Whether looking to make conscious changes or a cooking beginner ready to get comfortable in the kitchen, there’s a healthy and helpful tip on this list for everyone.

1 Wrap Your Sandwich in VeggiesLoading up on refined carbohydrates isn’t the best tactic for a balanced diet. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to swap in produce for carbohydrates. For a tasty wrap, iceberg lettuce holds things together nicely!

2 Consider the Smoke PointIt’s important not to heat olive oil – or any cooking oil – over its smoke point, the temperature at which a cooking fat or oil begins to break down and the oil smokes or burns, giving the oil and food an unpleasant taste.

3 Prepare in advanceChop everything early in the week. Even if you don’t have specific recipes in mind, wash, chop, and peel your favorite veggies. From there, you’re just 10 minutes away from a healthy stir-fry, soup, or pasta dish.

4 Bake instead of fryBaking proteins may be more time consuming, but the reduction in calories and fat make it worth the effort. Even with classic appetizers, there are plenty of healthier baked versions and they might just be better than the original.

5 Use Your BlenderThere are many ways your kitchen can help you lose weight, but one machine in particular is key: a blender. It can help you whip up a variety of low-calorie recipes that will satisfy your appetite, without adding inches to your waistline.

6 Always Rinse Canned GoodsCanned foods tend have higher sodium levels than their fresh counterparts. If you are in a hurry and need to use canned beans or vegetables, be sure to rinse them well before you cook them up.

7 Crush Your GarlicCrushing garlic will conserve its healthy compounds, the same compounds that break up blood clots. Crushing it triggers a reaction that boosts the healthy compounds in garlic, even after it’s cooked.

8 Calories are not your enemyBe careful about avoiding certain high-calorie picks like avocados, nuts, and olive oil. They might be high in calories, but they also offer essential nutrients to your diet. Just use them wisely and be mindful of your portion sizes.

Hawaii is like no other place on earth. Home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes and the world›s tallest sea mountain, birthplace of modern surfing, the hula and Hawaii Regional Cuisine and former seat of a royal kingdom and home to the only royal palace on US soil. Hawaii is one of the youngest geological formations in the world and the youngest state of the union. But perhaps Hawaii’s most unique feature is its aloha spirit: the warmth of Hawaii›s people that wonderfully complements the Islands› perfect temperatures.

There are six major islands to visit in Hawaii: Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii Island. You›ll find each island has its own distinct personality and offers its own adventures, activities and sights. Mark Twain called Hawaii, “That peaceful land, that beautiful land...the climate, one long delicious summer day, and the good that die experience no change, for they but fall asleep in one

heaven and wake up in another. ” We invite you to explore the Islands of Aloha to find your own heavenly Hawaii experiences.

KauaiKauai is Hawaii’s fourth largest island and is sometimes called the “Garden Isle,” which is an entirely accurate description. The oldest and northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain is draped in emerald valleys, sharp mountain spires and jagged cliffs, aged by time and the elements. Centuries of growth have formed tropical rainforests, forking rivers and cascading waterfalls. Some parts of Kauai are only accessible by sea or air, revealing views beyond your imagination.Beyond Kauai’s dramatic beauty, the island is home to a variety of outdoor activities.Kayak the Wailua River. Snorkel on Poipu Beach. Hike the trails of Kokee State Park. Even go ziplining above Kauai’s lush valleys. But it is the island’s laid-back

atmosphere and rich culture found in its small towns and along its one-lane bridges that make it truly timeless. Make your escape to Kauai and discover the undeniable allure of Kauai.

OahuSometimes called “The Gathering Place,” Oahu certainly lives up to its name. The third largest Hawaiian island is home to the majority of Hawaii’s diverse population, a fusion of east and west cultures rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people. It’s this fundamental contrast between the ancient and the modern that makes discovering Oahu so enjoyable. The clear blue waters of Kailua Beach meet the metropolitan cityscapes of Honolulu. The historic architecture of Iolani Palace meets the timeless memorials of Pearl Harbor. The big city of Waikiki meets the small town of Haleiwa on the North Shore. Whether you’re hiking atop

The smallest inhabited island in Hawaii, Lanai offers big enticements to its visitors. From the stunning views atop the pine-lined Munro Trail to watching the acrobatic spinner dolphins from romantic Hulopoe Bay, Lanai is a special place where you’re sure to find serenity, adventure and intimacy. If you want to get away from it all, get away to Lanai.

MauiStand above a sea of clouds high atop Haleakala, watch a 45-foot whale breach off the coast of Lahaina and lose count of the waterfalls along the road as you maneuver the hairpin turns of the Hana highway. One visit and it’s easy to see why Maui is called “The Valley Isle.”The second largest Hawaiian island has a smaller population than you would expect, making Maui popular with visitors who are looking for sophisticated diversions and amenities in the small

towns and airy resorts spread throughout the island. From the scenic slopes of fertile Upcountry Maui to beaches that have repeatedly been voted among the best in the world, a visit to the Valley Isle recharges the senses. But like every good magic trick, you will have to see it for yourself to believe it.

Hawaii IslandIt is easy to feel overwhelmed on Hawaii Island. From the molten magma flowing from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to the snow-capped heights of Maunakea; from the green rainforests of the Hamakua Coast to the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach; Hawaii Island is an unrivaled expression of the power of nature. To avoid confusion with the name of the entire state, the Island of Hawaii is often called the “Big Island,” and what an appropriate name it is. Nearly

iconic Leahi (Diamond Head), enjoying some of Hawaii’s bestshopping, or simply unwinding on the sands of the island’s beautiful beaches, you’ll find variety at every turn on Oahu.

LanaiYou will not find a single traffic light here and that is exactly how the people of Lanai like it. Only nine miles from Maui yet a world away, Lanai can feel like two places. The first is found in luxurious resorts where visitors can indulge in world-class amenities and championship-level golf at The Challenge at Manele and The Experience at Koele. The other is found bouncing along the island’s rugged back-roads in a 4-wheel drive exploring off the beaten path treasures like Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods) and Polihua Beach. In fact, only 30 miles of Lanai’s roads are paved.

twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined, its sheer size can be inspiring. You’ll find all but two of the world›s climatic zones within this island’s shores. The dramatic size and scope of the largest Hawaiian Island create a microcosm of environments and activities. On this island’s vast tableau, you’ll find everything from extravagant resorts and incredible golf courses to modest local towns and sacred Hawaiian historical sites, from the birthplace of King Kamehameha I to Hawaii’s first missionary church in Historic Kailua Village (Kailua-Kona). With so much to see, it’s best to experience the island in small pieces. There is plenty of room on Hawaii Island for your return.

Leila has become a firm favorite with locals and visitors to the area and has achieved a fantastic reputation for excellent food and service ever since its first launch in 2006. Just a short walk away from Al Fanar mall and IBIS Hotel, Leila has recently opened a new branch at The Cube in the heart of Salem Al Mubarak Street, now welcoming its guests during Iftar and Suhour throughout the holy month of Ramadan with an extraordinary menu and great atmosphere.

You can read the same menu – of tabbouleh, fattoush and hummus – from one restaurant to the next, but in each it is subtly, sometimes vastly, different and Leila’s menu is full of homely Lebanese Mezza dishes alive with color and texture. We started off with their perfectly made tabbouleh and the stuffed eggplants with yoghurt dip, sitting on a bed of rocca leaves “Bathenjen bel laban”. Leila’s tabbouleh, is unarguably like no other and the taste of the stuffed eggplants is delicious and gets even better with the tanginess of the yoghurt.

Moving on next to the hot Mezza, we tried a dish called “Manti” – a popular Armenian specialty of kafta “lamb” dumplings in a herbed tomato sauce and fresh local yoghurt. We loved the combination of yoghurt and tomato sauce coating the soft little dumplings – absolutely delicious. The Ouzi is smoky and full of flavor,

The light section on the menu is worth mentioning as it gives those who are aiming to reduce pounds during Ramadan a good chance to enjoy good Lebanese food without putting on weight.

Last but not least, we ended the journey with

the heavenly Ghazal Beirut – the delicate clouds of Ghazal Elbanat cotton candy wrapping a scoop of ice cream and topped with pistachio crumbs.

Leila offers its visitors a variety of options during Ramadan, a set menu and daily dishes over Iftar and additionally a breakfast menu over Suhour.

About LeilaLeila’s story is one of a girl who grew in the tranquil mountains, amongst good people who always lived in the land of the plenty. Leila was raised by her Grandma who taught her the secrets of the Lebanese kitchen – a national symbol that has been thriving through generation. One day, Leila decided to move to the city, taking with her the fresh goods of the village and the secret recipes of her grandma. In the

heart of the city, Leila established her own mini village, called Leila restaurant and Leila shop so that the people of the city would have a taste of the fresh and genuine Lebanese cuisine, bearing Grandma’s signature, so they can live Lebanese and get in contact.

Leila’s doors are open to all guests today, in Lebanon and abroad, serving all guests longing for the Lebanese rural authenticity and its genuine fresh taste.

The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn’t published a book for decades. Morris Bellamy is livid, not just because Rothstein has stopped providing books, but because the nonconformist Jimmy Gold has sold out for a career in advertising. Morris kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, yes, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel.

You also switch your attention back towards fun, romance, playtime, vacations, and other lovely ways of entertaining yourself.

TAURUS(Apr. 21-May 21)

You are upset about your reputation, leadership style, professional progress, level of achievement, or a boss, father, or authority figure is arguing with you. You are still doing well professionally and finding ways to benefit financially from your efforts. You also have some opportunities to vacation, goof off, and/or dabble in hobbies. Paying for those playtime activities is a little stressful, but you are still having a good time.

A partner or a rival is unhappy with your reputation, leadership style, and/or professional path. But you have some excellent dynamics encouraging you to work on your financial and professional goals, so it may literally and figuratively pay to focus on your career. The good news is that they two of you can join forces and work together on social, technological, and networking oriented activities.

When you go home, your roommates, parents, houseguests, and/or something about your private life or residential situation has your partner in an uproar. It could seem like everyone is ticked off about something. And yet, when you and your partner work together, you are able to smooth over all kinds of issues concerning those same people in your community that have been hassling you. On the upside, your finances and your professional life are not really affected by any of this drama.
