Is Your Body At War With Itself!By Dr. Greg Fors, DC / Board-certified Neurologist
An autoimmune disorder is a condition that occurs when yourimmune system attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. Actually, it is asif your immune system becomes so enraged it declares war on the body.Autoimmune diseases are now the third most common category of diseasein the United States after cancer and heart disease, with more than 80 namedtypes and estimated at being among the ten leading causes of death amongwomen in all age groups up to 65 years These diseases affect approximately22 million persons, but why? From the year 1900 to the end of World War II, most of the diseases throughout the world were “diseases of contagion.” These were diseases caused by outside pathogens entering the body. With the introductionof proper sanitation practices and antibiotics, most of these contagiousdiseases have been controlled, especially in the developed world. However, beginning at the end of World War II and especially at the present time, the primary disorders in the developed world became diseases of the toxicburden. It’s simple really; as this planet’s toxic burden increases, so yourbody’s toxic burden increases. When your body is exposed to chemicals, heavy metals andplasticizers it struggles to take these toxins out of your bloodstreamby eliminating them through the stool and kidneys. The problem is that the higher the toxic load and/or the more compromised your organs ofdetoxification and elimination become the more you accumulate thesecontaminants in your tissues. These chemicals can then wreak havoc onyour body destroying your health and well-being. Your body’s only defenseagainst this onslaught is calling the immune system into action. Ask yourself, how many people do you know with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, environmental sensitivity, lupus, Hashimoto’sThyroiditis, “dry eye syndrome” or children with autism or ADHD? You’reprobably aware of the ever-increasing numbers of people who no longercan eat foods containing gluten, casein, corn or soy, or be in the same room with someone wearing perfume. All of these modern disorders are relatedto an angry over taxed immune system and systemic inflammation triggeredby toxic injury from “fake” foods and a toxic environment. Many of theautoimmune disorders of today were not that prevalent even 25 years ago. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common thyroid disease and autoimmune disorder in the country today. It is triggered when antibodiesfrom your immune system attack your thyroid. This can decrease thethyroid’s hormone output (a condition called hypothyroidism). Symptomsinclude weight gain, fatigue, constipation, dry hair, depression, joint andmuscle pain, infertility and often increased cholesterol. Research findsthis condition to be seven times more common in women than in men and frequently goes undiagnosed unless the right lab tests are run. Thyroiditis can also increase thyroid function (hyperthyroidism). As an autoimmune disorder, this results when thyroid-stimulating antibodiesbegin to mimic thyroid-stimulating hormones causing your thyroid toincrease hormone production. This can cause symptoms of such as rapid heartbeat, heat intolerance, weight loss, frequent bowel movements andanxiety like symptoms. Common causes of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis are specific antigenssuch as a food, a mold, bacteria, or chronic virus that triggers the autoimmunereaction. Environmental chemicals and heavy metals can also be triggers.Gluten sensitivity is also a very common cause of Hashimoto’s thyroiddysfunction and is commonly undiagnosed. How does someone conquer these devastating autoimmune disorders? Proper laboratory testing by a knowledgeable doctor is theonly way to know what is causing your thyroiditis and how to heal it. The common approach of utilizing drugs actually suppresses the immune systemwhich can lead to devastating side effects such as lessening your ability toresist infections and the spread of malignant cancer cells. These drugs canalso cause hypertension, gastric ulcers, increased blood lipids and glucosealong with kidney and liver injury. However, as have many other doctors who practice functionalmedicine, I have seen numerous patients with autoimmune disordersconquer them through a natural approach, without dangerous drugs. Thereis a better, safer way!Want to know more? Your invited to attend my FREE SEMINARS!

● To keep sugar from lumping, keep a few crackers in the sugar canister. They ward off moisture, and they don’t affect the taste of the sugar.
● Whenever my child has a scrape, cut or even a bruise, she likes to have an adhesive bandage put on it. But when it’s time for the bandage to come off, she’s shy about it. I use a cotton ball to apply baby oil to the bandage, and it slips right off. This works for the waterproof kind, too.” -- L.K. in Missouri
● When polishing my wing-tips, I realized that I had run out of shoe polish. My wife suggested furniture polish, and it worked very well. I just might use it from now on.” -- T.Y. in Delaware
● Old sheets can be recycled into pillowcases. I change my pillowcase more often than my sheets in order to keep my face clean, and I have a steady supply of cases because I made some when my last sheet set wore out.” -- N.L. in California
● Make your own furniture polish. This mix is ecological and thrifty, smells wonderful and is a cinch to mix. Add 1/3 cup lemon juice to 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake well and use in a spray bottle.
● Polish glassware scratches with toothpaste to get them back in shape.
● Have arthritis in your hands? Make two punctures on opposite sides of a racquetball. Push a pen through and position it to where you can hold the ball while writing. Or better yet, have one of your kids do this for you. I did it for my father, and he loves it. It has improved his writing, and his hand doesn’t get tired
so quickly.” -- V.J. in Georgia
● Mildew can be removed from your bathroom tile using a mix of water, lemon juice and salt in equal parts. Mix up a couple of cups, apply to mildew areas with a rag, then scrub with an old toothbrush. Rinse well.
● When drilling holes in drywall or plaster, use this neat trick to catch the dust: Fold the opening fl ap back on an envelope, and tape the envelope, open, to the wall under where you are going to drill. The dust and pieces will fall
right into the open envelope, which can be moved to the next spot and just thrown away when you’re done.

INVENTORS (continued):• Earle Dickson was a cotton buyer working
for Johnson & Johnson in 1921 when his wife’s kitchen mishaps inspired an invention. His bride was frequently cutting her fi ngers while preparing meals, and he was patching up her injuries with gauze and adhesive tape. Dickson developed a compact bandage of small pieces of gauze and surgical tape that could be easily applied, and pitched his idea to plant management. A position as company vice president came along as the years went by, as well as a place on the board of directors. When Dickson died in 1961, Johnson & Johnson’s sales of Band-Aids topped $30 million a year.
• As a Minnesota manufacturing plant worker during the World War I era, Charles Strite partook of his meals
in the plant cafeteria. After being served burned toast countless times, he devised a machine that would turn off the heat and pop up the bread when the toast was done. Although General Electric had already marketed a toaster in 1909, their model only toasted one side at a time and had to be manually turned off. Strite added springs and a timer to his appliance and patented his “Toastmaster.” His later models added a lightness and darkness lever.
• While Swiss chemist and textile engineer Jacques Brandenberger was seated in a restaurant in the early 1900s, a glass of wine was spilled on the tablecloth. As the chemist watched the waiter replace the cloth, an idea occurred to him — a transparent, protective fi lm that would make cloth waterproof. After many experiments, he came up with what we
know today as cellophane. The fi rst company to use cellophane in the United States was the Whitman’s candy company, which wrapped its fi ne chocolates in the fi lm. Brandenberger’s patent rights were later sold to the Dupont company. In 1912,• Josephine Cochran didn’t invent the mechanical dishwasher because she was tired of washing dishes. This socialite politician’s wife was just tired of her hired help chipping and breaking her dishes! In 1886, she invented the Cochran Dishwasher, and the contraption made its debut at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, winning the fair’s highest award. Businesses were the only ones who seemed interested, and a smaller home model didn’t come out until 1914. She founded a company for her dishwasher, one which eventually became Kitchen Aid. • Chicago’s1893 Exhibition was also the site for the unveiling of mechanical engineer Whitcomb Judson’s invention, the “Clasp Locker,” a device credited as the fi rst zipper. Actually, sewing
machine inventor Elias Howe had already patented an “Automatic Continuous Clothing Closure” in 1851, but his sewing machine success kept him too busy to market his fastener. Judson marketed his with the opening of the Universal Fastener Company, giving him recognition as the inventor. However, his original zipper bore little resemblance to those of today. One of Judson’s employees, Gideon Sundback, actually developed a design with interlocking teeth, and received a patent fi rst for his “Hookless Fastener,” then another for the improved “Separable Fastener.” Whitcomb Judson was no stranger to the world of inventions, having been awarded 30 patents throughout his career, including 14 patents for a street railway system that ran on compressed air.
• Although Sarah Boone wasn’t the fi rst to invent an ironing board, she is credited with a major improvement to the design. Patent No. 473,653 was issued to this former slave in April of 1892, making her one of the fi rst, if not the fi rst African-American woman to receive a patent. An “ironing table” patent had been awarded in 1858, but Boone’s featured a narrower design, enabling users to effectively iron sleeves and bodies of garments.
• The Frisbie Baking Company opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1871, and earned a good living selling pies to many of the New England colleges, including Yale. Beginning in the 1940s, Yale students discovered that tossing the empty pie tin made for great fun, and students turned it into a game. Meanwhile, out in California, an L.A. building inspector, Walter Frederick Morrison, who was quite interested in fl ying saucers, invented a
plastic fl ying disc in 1948, and named it the Pluto Platter. When Wham-O toy executives spotted Yale students engaged in pie-pan tossing, they convinced Morrison to sell them his rights. Wham-O renamed the disc the Frisbee in honor of the pie company, although it altered the spelling slightly. Incidentally, William Morrison’s family was no stranger to inventing — his father had invented the automotive sealed-beam headlight.
• A different kind of disc was developed in 1971 by Alan Shugart, an engineer at IBM. Shugart introduced the fi rst “memory disc,” better known as the fl oppy disc, an 8-inch fl exible plastic device coated with magnetic iron oxide, capable of storing computer data. This fi rst fl oppy disc could hold 100 KBs of data. Todays fl ash drives hold over 100 thousand times that.
