HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW

ABOUT CIVIL & STRUCTURAL

ENGINEERS?

FIND OUT MORE INSIDE

+x-clusive INTERVIEW WITH

CIVIL ENGINEER : SIM JAE SHEN Bachelor in Civil Engineering (Hons)

SO... WHAT

IS A CIVIL AND

STRUCTURAL ENGINEER?

Role of a C&S engineer

1) Evaluation of

construction process

2) Design construction

3) Preservation of

elements

Are they

different?

Structural engineering is

categorized as an area of

specialization of Civil Engineering

But over the years,

structural

engineering has been

made into a SEPARATE

discipline.

The differences between both

areas are complex, so FLIP the

Civil engineering is the 2ND OLDEST engineering discipline after military

engineering. The earliest practice of

this discipline may have dated back to

Ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian

times.

Something you should know…

To understand what civil engineers

do, you need to think about what you

do in the first hour after you wake up

on a Monday morning.

APPRECIATE… You clean your teeth using the running

water in your bathroom. You travel to

work on a finely constructed network

of roads or on a train or underground

system. You might even walk through

an underpass or over a bridge before

finally settling at your desk. None of this

would have been possible without civil

engineers.

Civil engineers design and build bridges, roads, railways, and tunnels. They design

and build tall structures and large buildings such as multi-storey car parks, train

stations, and even the Olympic stadium.

Without civil engineers we wouldn’t have a constant supply of clean water, or

sustainable energy to help us save our planet. Without civil engineers the world we

live in would be completely unrecognisable.

Structural engineering is a profession that makes a noteworthy influence to infrastructure, industry, residential and recreational developments.

It involves the analysis, design, construction and maintenance of structures.

They carry out strength calculations and prepare drawings to ensure they are resilient enough to avoid collapse when loaded. The most common structures dealt with are buildings and bridges, but tunnels

and walls to hold back earth

embankments also form part of a structural engineer's work.

Structural engineers generally work in teams and ensure buildings are strong enough to withstand natural forces and loads imposed by the nature of its use.

This engineering field is offered in universities as both a subject under civil engineering and a specialization that result in a master's degree or a doctorate.

UNSUNG HEROES…

Something you should know…The ancient Romans made great

bounds in structural

engineering, pioneering large

structures in masonry and

concrete, many of which are still

standing today. They include

aqueducts, columns, lighthouses

, defensive walls and harbours.

SEE WHAT HE HAS TO SAY!

Q: Why did you choose to pursue this career?A: Basically it is my childhood dream to pursue this career. I have a passion to look at buildings and mentally improve them.

Q: What is a C&S Engineer?A: Well, CIVIL is more to the infrastructure work. We plan the earth, drainage, sewage works and etc. For STRUCTURAL it is quite basic. We plan the structure and durability of the buildings.

Q: What are the pros and cons of this job?A: For pros, you will gain a lot of experience in this field. For example, how can this thing be built? Thus you will try to do more research on the best method to construct this thing. Everyday is a learning day for me. It will never stop. For cons, there is no time. But basically it’s not a problem because I’m used to it.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

BOTH AREAS?Although they may belong to the same field of engineering, they differ in several aspects. For example, civil engineering focuses more attention in design elements while structural engineering is more concern on inspecting materials to be used for the construction. They ensure that the materials being used for construction can support the design of the structure. To sum it up, civil engineering is a broad subject which covers structural engineering. It’s a first degree course offered in universities which results in a bachelor degree. On the other hand, structural engineering is a subject under civil engineering and is taught to students taking up the course. However, it is also a specialization which leads to a master's

degree or a doctorate.

SO… YOU KNOW ABOUT BOTH CIVIL AND

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING…
