THE POWER OF COMMUNITYIn recent weeks there has been much talk of the amazing things that might happen if the various communities of Sedgefield worked together for a common cause. The recent ‘Paint-a-thon’ at Smutsville Primary School was proof in the pudding!

On Saturday morning, 21 July, officially known as Sedgefield Primer) with the common aim

of sprucing it up for the kids and the staff.

more than 80 locals descended on the school (

With so many volunteers in place, ranging from the very young to the very senior and coming from all walks of life, no less than twelve school classrooms were painted in five hours.

The initiative was driven by Ashley and Devon Basson. Ashley, a teacher at the school, had asked her husband to assist her in revamping her classroom when she arrived last year. The results were so impressive that they decided the other classrooms could do with the same treatment. They appealed for help from the public - and boy did they get it!

Principal Hariette Heyns and the School staff are very grateful for everyone's input and look forward to many more projects that will improve the environment for the scholars at Sedgefield Primer.

Thank you to everybody involved!

o alas - the ‘Winter Diet’ saga continues.S

I think the crunch (ahhh, I so miss that sound) came when I went in to buy new jeans a couple of weeks back.

After trying on numerous pairs, each one going up in size from the previous, I finally found jeans that fit. I explained to the ever-patient assistant (who had herself lost weight running backwards and forwards to the rail to bring me 'the next size up') that it had been the metric measurements of the waistline on the labels that had confused me, I'm more used to inches.

“These aren't metric,” she said.

(I swear I saw Mrs Ed slip her a twenty.)

So, I decided to embark on a course that would get me back to the be-muscled physique of the l e a n - m e a n - w i n d s u r f i n g -machine I once was. (Mrs Ed insists that any 'bemuscled physique' moment I had must have happened in a dream, because she certainly can't remember it, and the only thing lean and mean about me is my wallet.)

Fortunately, there is a lot of information on dieting out there on the WWW, so I knew shedding a pound or two would be easy - like taking candy off a baby.

(Incidentally, you shouldn't ever try that, even if you ARE hungry,. It's actually not easy, and their mothers tend to lose their cool in a big way, which can be embarrassing if the supermarket is very busy.)

So I am happy to report that I am currently on the “Single Food Diet”.

Actually, if the truth be told, that's not the proper name. It was originally called The Kale Diet, but I renamed it, for reasons that will soon become obvious.

How The Kale Diet works, according to a very detailed and impressively scientific video clip on the interweb, is that the dieter chemically shocks his or her body into dropping weight by eating nothing but Kale for twenty four days. They said this is a natural metabolic reaction, stumbled upon by one of the world's top dieticians.

On the video this very same dietician (so nice of him to make an appearance and share his expertise) explained that if your diet consisted of one particular health-rich food, such as kale, this would sustain you for everyday l i fe and, more importantly, appease any hunger pangs. MEANWHILE your body would turn to your fat reserves to find and absorb all the nutrients and chemicals and minerals and other energy-providing elements that aren't contained in the kale. THUS MAKING YOU THINNER.

It's not rocket science.

(See what I did there? Rocket? Kale? No? Please at least TRY and keep up.)

What was even more exciting about this program, was that if you ordered the dietician's Miracle Kale Diet book (which was coincidentally on a special 50% offer) it would provide you with mouth-watering kale recipes AND an exercise program to compliment the diet and guarantee a six pack* in eight weeks. (*though no particular brand of beer was mentioned)

This seemed to make sense, and when the book arrived I noted

(from the strategic, scientifically designed meal planner) the magnificent recipes allotted for the first day. Breakfast:- a delicious kale Smoothie.Lunch:- a delicious kale soup with sprinklings of grated kale, and Dinner:- deep fried kale, with kale-bake and a side of shredded kale salad dressed with kale oil.

So, after stocking up on the necessary ingredient (so easy!) I enthusiastically launched into the diet. Indeed I was quite proud of myself as I read the 'Welcome to Team Kale and congratulations on choosing a better, healthier life' introductory message on the book cover. Having watched the video clip several times, I had embraced the fact that I had already put myself ahead of the pack. “Most men over forty aren't blessed with the willpower to handle this diet” it said, adding that “Most men choose to 'let themselves go' rather than rising to face the middle-age-spread challenge.”

But not me. I wasn’t ‘Most Men’ at all. I was Team Kale, and couldn't wait to get the t-shirt. (incidentally also on offer at a generous member's discount)

Manning up, I grabbed the Kale by the horns and plunged in.

In fact, all went very well until, af ter labouring over the preparation of the kale smoothie for some time (because this diet had been scientifically designed, and let's face it – this was going to be my breakfast for the next eight weeks, if not the rest of my life), I took my first swig, and found it impossible to swallow.

It was vile.

No. That's an insult to vile.

This was the vilest of vile, times ten, then viled some more in a vile machine.

Indeed, if I was ever asked to do a food critique, I would say that this Kale Smoothie tasted like the armpit scrapings of a lawn-fed yak which had been sautéed in goat-phlegm.

Convinced I had somehow got the recipe wrong, I quickly tackled 'Lunch', only to realise that the 'Delicious Kale Soup' was merely a warmed up version of the 'Delicious Kale Smoothie'. Surprisingly, the ‘four and a half minutes simmering on low heat’ turned out results that were more than miraculous. It actually tasted worse.

I was stuck. Worse yet, Mrs Ed was watching, and took the opportunity to ask what I planned to do with the other eight kilograms of the stuff I had bought.)

After nibbling on a raw Kale leaf for a second or two (and feeling none of the suggested ‘brain

stimulation’) I went back to the vegetable shop, determined that they had mistakenly sold me comfrey, seaweed or some sort of regurgitated kudu cud. The man behind the counter assured me that what I had purchased was indeed kale, and rudely asked if I was aware I had a bit of it stuck between my front teeth.

When my efforts to spit it out onto his forehead failed to the point of embarrassment, I turned on my heel and headed towards the exit.

Fortunately I happened to go past the bakery, which was a stroke of good fortune, because this was what gave me the best idea in the world….

In closing, I am happy, and rather proud to report that I am still on the same diet. 100%. And apart from the exercise program (which is clearly full of printing errors – I mean how on earth they can be so careless as to put 'per day' instead of 'per week' I do not know) I am doing exactly what the book advises…

EXCEPT fo r one s l i gh t adjustment (now here's that stroke of genius) Instead of kale, I am using 'meat pies' as the single food source.

And I must say, this morning's Meat Pie Smoothie was indeed delicious, as was the Meat Pie Soup I had for lunch. And now, as I stand at the stove watching my Deep Fried Meat Pie sizzling away, with my Meat Pie Bake already in the oven, I can almost feel the inches dropping off me….

I'd be mad if they didn't!

This was confirmed at a meeting two days later in which the Lank Gewag committee sat with Penxa and members of his team.

Housing waiting lists were also discussed – with a plan to 'clean them up' for accuracy, so that the correct amount of beneficiaries could be ascertained. The committee gave the municipality

A follow up meeting was held a week later (25 June), and whilst the committee was not prepared

The members of Knysna Tourism and the Knysna Accommodation Association (KAA) have given their overwhelming support for a plan to partner with Wesgro, The plan is dependent on Council's approval for Knysna Municipality to enter into a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with Wesgro.

This follows the search for a m e t h o d i n w h i c h t h e Municipality can legally fulfil its mandate to the tourism industry.

Knysna Tourism members support possible business model for the future

Knysna Tourism chairpersonElmay Bouwer

HOLDING THUMBS FOR TOURISM?I t s e e m s t h a t K n y s n a Tourism’s future is once again hanging in the balance. With no Service Level Agreement in p l a c e w i t h K n y s n a Municipality, from the end of this month the organisation will no longer have funds to keep its operations running, and the board will have no choice but to close both the Knysna and Sedgefield offices. All nine staff members have already been put through the retrenchment process.

But there is hope on the horizon in a plan to partner with WESGRO, the Western Cape's i n v e s t m e n t a n d t o u r i s m marketing organisation. This is dependent on Council's approval for Knysna Municipality to enter into a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with WESGRO.“This decision probably came at the right time, given the major changes in the bus iness environment around the world,” s a i d K n y s n a T o u r i s m chairperson, Elmay Bouwer.

“It was high time that we re-examined our role, looked at international best practice, and found new, technology-driven strategies for the future,” she said. The board of Knysna Tourism had earlier commissioned a report on the way forward from auditors Grant Thornton, which is considered the country’s most-respected, independent, and credible tourism consulting firm.

"This was vital as we prepared ourselves for the termination of t h e S L A b e t w e e n t h e Municipali ty and Knysna Tourism NPC,” said Bouwer.

The following is a sequential record of meetings and statements with what has materialised between you, the previous MM and Knysna Tourism since you were appointed Mayor of Knysna on 6 June and the unacceptable position Tourism to this town now finds itself in as a consequence of the indifference and lack of any sense of urgency displayed by the Municipality to Tourism to Knysna. 1. 01.03.2018 : Board members met with the then Municipal Manager, Mr Chetty in February 2018 to resolve the Municipality’s legal and obligatory way forward for tourism to Knysna and Knysna Tourism ( representing the private sector and 300 members).Reference was first made at this meeting to the alternative process and option with Wesgro 2. Mr Chetty made reference to this alternative way forward, which would include Wesgro which would meet the processes Knysna Municipality had to comply with in terms of its Financial and statutory obligations as well as it obligations to tourism to Knysna. This also applied to Supply Chain management. 3. 06.03.2018: Elmay Bouwer and Clive Bennett meet with the then Mayor, Eleanor Bouw Spies who further confirms the opportunity and the way forward with Wesgro. 4. 14.03.2018: Clive Bennett gives a presentation to Mayoral committee at which the point is raised that in 100 days Knysna Tourism will be out of contract with Knysna Municipality and with it the commensurate funding. Councillor Ricky Van Aswegen asks in question time as to how this unacceptable position has been allowed to materialise that in 100 days time there is no plan by Knysna Municipality with Knysna Tourism and tourism to Knysna. 5. 23.04.2018: A further meeting was held with Mr Chetty where specific reference was made to an SLA for 3 years with potentially Wesgro by way of an SLA between KM and Wesgro. 6. 1.06.2018 :Clive Bennett and Elmay Bouwer met with you a week after you came in to office at which you acknowledged you were fully aware of the Wesgro proposal on the table and that Tourism was a matter of priority to you as it was the key economic driver to the town. 7. 13.06.2018. Elmay Bouwer and Clive Bennett met with you at your office at which you made reference to shifting Knysna Tourism back to LED and the administration must be attended as a matter of urgency . You made reference to Section 67 8. 04.07.2018 : Following the meeting with the Indonesian Trade delegation you, Ilze Van Schalkwyk and Petrus Van Niekerk were present where in this meeting the minutes which you were copied on, you stated you wants this agreement between KM and Wesgro signed and sealed by Mr Chetty by 14 July. 9. 18.07.2018: You had a meeting with Wesgro. 10. 18.07.2018: You had a meeting with the Board of Knysna Tourism at which you stated clearly, all necessary decision making persons with KM , namely Mayor , Deputy Mayor, Acting MM, Chief Financial Officer and Head of LED were all in agreement that there was compliancy and the matter was to move forward and you wanted the agreement signed “ next week”. It was confirmed to you that Knysna Tourism was having a members meeting on 19.06.2018 at which this stated information would be communicated to all members. 11. 19.07.2018. Knysna Tourism has a meeting with Knysna Tourism members. Knysna Tourism conveys to members the position with Knysna Municipality and the alternative way forward position with Wesgro. The members fully supported the way forward with Wesgro; it was conveyed Mark Willemse was in full support. 12. 19.07.2018: On a phone call between Elmay Bouwer and yourself on Thursday 19 July 14:23 indicating and confirming the Wesgro alternative was on track and you had a meeting with CFO Mbulelo Memani to prepare all papers for council meeting 13. 19.07.2018: Following on from this statement of yours the Board of Knysna Tourism drew up the appropriate press statement which was emailed to you 14. 20.07.2018: . You advised the press statement was in order save for two minor changes which Clive Bennett made and emailed back to you. On receipt of this email you stated to Clive Bennett you had discussed the matter with associates of yours. You then requested that no reference be made to Knysna Municipality’s making reference to council first needing to approve this way forward.

15. Saturday 20.07.2018. Elmay Bouwer called you to set up a meeting . You were unable to meet due to a DA event in Brenton. Elmay Bouwer requested this meeting with you as it concerned points raised in the conversation with you reference there being no contract between KM and KT, no plan B from KM re Tourism as of 01 August 2018 and that he does not want to pre empt anything before council meeting on Thursday 26 July 2018. 16. The Board of Knysna Tourism is now requesting the confirmation of Knysna Municipality that the point of the Wesgro alternative has be placed on the Agenda for the Council meeting scheduled for Thursday 26 July 2018 and are awaiting a copy of this Agenda. 17. The Board now wants to know from you as to how and by when the Municipality will fulfil its legal tourism obligation to Knysna as at present as confirmed by you there is no plan in place with effect from 01 August 2018. 18. It needs to be recorded that there has been no financial assistance or contribution from Knysna Municipality to Knysna Tourism for the month of July. Knysna Tourism continued to trade in good faith on the understanding that Knysna Municipality was positively progressing the way forward with Wesgro.

At the suggestion of the Mun ic ipa l Manage r, t he Munic ipa l i ty approached WESGRO as a possible service provider to perform the tourism function. During a series of meetings on 18 and 19 July the Municipality, WESGRO, and the board of Knysna Tourism developed the foundations for a possible agreement, which Bouwer described as “an incredible win-win-win for everyone.“During our discussions with Wesgro’s CEO, Tim Harris, and their chief marketing officer, Judy Laine, they stressed that their most important priority was that the local tourism industry must ful ly support their involvement, and that they wouldn’t consider the task without the industry’s buy-in,” she said.

“This falls in line with the Government’s 1996 White Paper on Tourism, which states that tourism should be government-led, industry-driven, and community-based.

“It also means that the board of Knysna Tourism will be in a position to direct the strategy for m a r k e t i n g K n y s n a a n d Sedgefield.”

It was pointed out during the members’ meeting on Thursday that the international standard for destination marketing takes the form of a pyramid: “You market your country first (which is the largest, heaviest portion of the pyramid), your province second, your region third, and your town (the tiny apex of the pyramid) last,” said Bouwer.

“Given Wesgro’s legislative

mandate and its massive reach, it is without doubt the only agency that we know of that can deliver on the three upper levels of the pyramid all at once - which generates gearing that will benefit us enormously. We believe that Wesgro is therefore in a position to deliver what Knysna Tourism never could in all the years that we’ve been working basically in isolation - and this is one of the reasons we’re so excited about the prospect of working with them.”

THE WAY FORWARD

Using input given by its members, the board of Knysna To u r i s m h a s d r a f t e d a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will form the basis of the negotiated agreement between Knysna Tourism and WESGRO, inc lud ing the marketing model.

The financial funding model and other key elements will be covered by an SLA between Knysna Municipali ty and Wesgro. “Knysna Tourism and WESGRO working together will create a marketing strategy for the town that is built on the needs of the local tourism industry, that fits in with - and builds upon - p r o v i n c i a l a n d r e g i o n a l marketing strategies, and that fulfils the needs of the tourism businesses and the people of Knysna and Sedgef ie ld ,” Bouwer explained.

The proposed way forward between Knysna Municipality and WESGRO awaits final approval by Council. The meeting, originally set for Thursday 26 July, has since been postponed to Monday 30 July.

Mark Nancarrow, a Sedgefield local, was announced as the official ’MTN Bozza’ to the S p r i n g b o k s a t a p re s s conference in Johannesburg 19 July 2018.

What does this mean? Well, this 23 year old man will travel with the Springboks for the next 18 months, as the team’s exclusive “social media eyes and ears” for the upcoming Castle Lager Rugby Championship in August 2018 and right up until the end of their 2019 World Cup campaign in Japan.

Newly graduated from Rhodes (Journalism) and UCT (Honours in Politics), Mark had to go through a gruelling selection process before landing this opportunity of a life time. He is known for his passion in the researching of rugby, and had the opportunity to showcase his skills at the exciting second test match in Bloemfontein on Youth Day where the Springboks

clinched the series with a phenomenal 23 – 12 victory over England.

The MTN selection process was eventually whittled down to three finalists, who each showcased their social media skills during the Springboks incoming tour last month: Quinton Janse van Rensburg, Mark Nancarrow and Ndabenhle “Bench” Zondi, were allowed the same opportunities and access, to show off their Bozza skills in the days leading up to each test match.

This meant spending time with the team during pre-game activities, such as signing sessions and jersey giveaways, having breakfast with Coach Rassie Erasmus, witnessing team a n n o u n c e m e n t s , t r a i n i n g sessions as well as exclusive locker room experiences led by legends: John Smit, Os Du Randt and Corné Krige before each test match.

The public voted by watching highlights videos of each finalist and assisted MTN in deciding who of the three was worthy of the title of the Official Bozza. And Nancarrow was announced as the “Bozza” of the national team. MTN, proud Official T e a m S p o n s o r o f t h e Springboks, will cover all costs – valued at R2million – to make sure that “Bozza” is always in the front row seat wherever the Springboks play.Mapula Bodibe; Executive for Consumer Business at MTN SA says: “Congratulations to Mark Nancarrow! Our campaign with the Springboks is an opportunity for us to connect our customers with their passion and we think that Mark is the ‘Bozza’ to do just that.

The Springbok team remains an important national asset that many of us can identify with and we are pleased to give our customers a platform that brings them closer to our national team.”

Mark expressed how the opportunity exceeded his very high expectations of his dream job: “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life and being a pa r t o f t h i s comple t e ly confirmed just how much I love this team, this job and just how

excited and happy I would be to continue doing it until the end of 2019,” he said.Follow @Official_Bozza on all social platforms and let MTN bring you closer to the Boks #AnswerTheCall.

INCLUSIVE. INNOVATIVE. INSPIRED

A great deal of ‘activity and inactivity’ has been taking p l a c e i n t h e K n y s n a Municipality, mostly driven by political confusion (which is not the environment that SR&RA operates in) but when it impacts on service delivery to the detriment of ratepayers and residents of the greater Sedgefield it requires some form of action to be taken.

To this end SR&RA addressed the DA (Minister Bredell) and requested that some action be undertaken on an urgent basis. A meeting was arranged for 11th July with Minister Winde from Cape Town who was in Sedgefield for a public meeting. SR&RA met with Minister Winde prior to the public meeting.

SR&RA deals not only with the municipality but various other bodies/associations such as SANParks (including the Water Forum) to ensure that the interests of all residents within the greater Sedgefield are protected and cared for. However if there is a lack of cooperation from ‘the powers that be’ it is difficult to make progress but we cannot ‘give up’ and must persevere. Despite the shenanigans on the political front within Knysna, which we do find somewhat embarrassing as it appears that the interest is individually focused and not for the benefit of the community, some progress has been made. This needs to be taken forward on a united front by us all as will be explained further in this article.

What has become patently clear in our discussions with Alan Winde is the following:

• As a result of the apparent political confusion within the DA the impact on the current ineff ic iencies wi thin the municipality are of no benefit to the Sedgefield community. To make matters even worse the Municipal Manager has resigned and will be replaced by a temporary MM who has been u n c o o p e r a t i v e a n d n o n actionable in the past.

• The outcry for housing within the community is understood but the council and

municipality has taken little or no action over the years. What is not understood is that houses cannot be built if there is a lack of sewerage so making false promises to the needy is raising false expectations – it is no wonder that there are strikes and riots, etc. There will be more unless the municipality are open and transparent at all times.

• Mention was made to Mr Winde of certain matters (issues) that have been on the table for months and in some cases years with virtually no action by the m u n i c i p a l i t y a n d l i t t l e cooperation from the ruling political parties (whoever they might have been at the time);

• The housing shortage in Smutsville• The condition of roads in the entire area of Sedgefield• The Dune scenario (with limited cooperation from the municipality)• C h a r l e s - t e - Wa t e r embankment erosion• P u b l i c a c c e s s t o Swartvlei• The state of the village generally• Tourism is the lifeblood of the town and we all rely o n p e o p l e v i s i t i n g Sedgefield. Promotion of tourism is about to change, and we look forward to participating in the way forward.

• W e ( S R & V A ) a r e constantly informed on new d e v e l o p m e n t s f o r b o t h business and residential in the Sedgefield area and are required to approve building p l a n s b e f o r e t h e y a r e submitted for approval to the municipality.

• The development on Cloud 9 has carried our approval as it consists of 26 agricultural stands of 3Ha each with no fences. All alien vegetation will be replaced by indigenous trees. (Much better than a housing estate)• Spar has submitted plans on which we have c o m m e n t e d b a s e d o n delivery areas, parking and aesthetic appeal of the

frontage including mosaics. This is well underway.

• PnP ‘Mall’ is still under discussions as there have been some objections. • We are in the process of assisting residents who are having problems obtaining c l e a r a n c e / o b j e c t i o n situations.

Recently a meeting was held in Sedgefield by a number of ‘entities’ and some individuals who are concerned by the lack of action undertaken by the munic ipal i ty and DA in Sedgefield. It was felt that there should be a combined approach to the municipality and the ruling political party regarding what we as voters, ratepayers and residents require to be done. We having another meeting with these parties shortly and will keep you informed.

FEEDBACK FROM SR & RA - CALL TO ACTION!In the interim we have deposited ‘suggestion boxes’ at the following outlets where we request ‘suggestions/concerns/ positives’ to be deposited and we w i l l t a k e u p w i t h t h e municipality/council. The boxes will be cleared every fortnight and communicated to the respective entities within the municipality. You will be kept informed of developments on a regular basis.

What has your local Lions Club been busy with?

MANDELA DAY - THANK YOU SEDGEFIELD!We are so grateful for the generous response, once again, from our S e d g e f i e l d community.

Lions South Africa #LionsFoodDrive2018 in conjunction with Pick n Pay nationwide in support of Mandela Day, hosted a joint project for the c o l l e c t i o n o f foodstuffs all over South Africa.

Sedgefielders will be pleased to know 436.3kgs of non- perishable food items were collected, which have been donated to Slow Town Meals. Our Lions Club would be nothing without the support of our ‘luverrrrrly’ locals at these community projects.

Knysna Montessori School is in for a treat as Wilderness’s Jazz group, Sugar and Spice will be performing in a Jazz concert at the school.

Eleven year old Jodi-Anne Michael (a pupil at Montessori) will be their special guest. She has recently earned the title of Best Vocalist at the Young Musicians Competition. They are primarily a show band and will entertain you with classic Standard, Swing and Latin Jazz dating back to the Nat King Cole, Cole Porter era and some of the favourite Antonio Carlos Jobim melodies.

The concert will take place on

Friday, 27 July at 7pm in the K n y s n a M o n t e s s o r i Amphitheatre.

This Jazz group from George and Wilderness consists of Cecily Pepler (vocals), Rico Muller (piano & vocals), Soppie Thyse (bass & vocals) and with his fierce energy Kevi Levin is on drums.

The lead singer Cecily Pepler who also manages the group says they want to share their music with a wider audience of Jazz lovers in the Knysna area.

“Our love for this genre gives us a platform to revisit the beautiful music written so long ago, music

Knysna Montessori Jazz Concertthat is timeless and familiar, and it is exciting to witness someone so young having the same appreciation” said Pepler.

Bring your own drinks. Light meals will be available before the show which starts promptly at 19:00. A portion of the proceeds from the concert will go to the school. Ticket prices are R120 for adults and R60 for scholars under 12 years.

SANParks employees in the Garden Route in i t ia l ly planned to find 100 ways to celebrate the legendary Nelson Mandela's birthday. Since there is only one day to celebrate the late President's birthday, the teams narrowed down their ambitious plans two central themes - to strengthen partnerships and to also bring life to structures by refurbishing them.

In the Tsitsikamma section of the Park, teams planted indigenous trees at a school in Storms River and extended commemorations to the following day where the Crags crèche was repainted and maintenance work done. On Friday they also planted vegetable gardens at the Storms River Primary in collaboration with the forestry company Mountain to Ocean (MTO).

Work got underway early on Mandela Day at the Knysna An ima l Wel fa re Soc ie ty (KAWS) with the painting of the quarantine area. The KAWS quarantine area was in desperate need of refurbishment. This is the area demarcated for strays, surrendered and injured animals. Other teams from Knysna went to paint Eyethu crèche in White Location partnering with the local ward councillor in the area while those in Diepwalle and

Harke rv i l l e wen t t o t he Diepwalle crèche.

The Wilderness teams focussed on four areas, one in George: CANSA assisting with basic maintenance of wendy houses a n d f u r t h e r p l a n t i n g o f indigenous plants for care homes. Another group went to the Golden Oldies Service Centre in collaboration with the Social Department to clean the premises and donate fleece blankets.

Similar maintenance events were held in Beervlei (Lancewood Primary), Farleigh (Karatara P r i m a r y ) a n d G o u d v e l d (Keurhoek Community Creche).

SANParks Honorary Rangers in

Knysna successfully rallied volunteers to help with a 67- minute clean up to of the town of Knysna.

According to Government and Information Systems (GCIS), this year's focus for the Mandela Day centenary was on working together to 'move South Africa forward.' This year's theme celebrates the Tata Mandela and M ama S i s u lu C en t en a r y celebration with sub-themes- 'be the legacy' and 'A woman of fortitude.’

Our legacy in an open-access Park such as the GRNP is to foster working partnerships in line with the SANParks' vision of connecting society.

SANParks Scientific Services team about to start work at KAWS

“Gobsmacked” is a fair description of how I felt on Monday 17 July when I agreed to meet the Lions at Pick n Pay at 12:00.

It all started with a simple SMS from Debbie O, with a heads up that the Lions were having a 3 day collection of food stuffs at Pick n Pay. The proceeds would then be handed over to Mobile Meals for distribution. The object would be to collect from the good people of Sedgefield and to give to people less fortunate than ourselves. Piece of cake – my

line of work !!

I arrived at Pick n Pay to find 2 trolleys filled to the brim with plastic bags filled with the 14 goodies listed on the plastic bags - rice, pasta, oil, oats, sugar, salt etc. Wow! the generosity of Sedgefielders in operation again. But no, I was told there are another seven trolleys filled to the brim and further donations from Striders. Now I was really knocked out.

My trustee Isuzu was literally filled to the brim with plastic bags and the end count was over

100 bags of donations that I had to empty and consolidate in o rder to d i s t r ibu te throughout the village. The task took 2 days to complete, but the reward from the various recipients made the task so worthwhile.

What can I say, time and time again Sedgefield is becoming legend in it`s generosity and I am more than proud to be a part of the system.

BEACH PICS NEEDEDLocal Tourism man Jurgens van der Walt is on a marketing mission for Sedgefield, and wants to put a particular emphasis on showing off local beaches.“We have some of the most beautiful beaches in the Garden Route,” he explained, “But people passing through, or visiting our markets, often don’t get to experience them, or even know they exist.”To this end he plans to erect a number of tasteful signs in and around Sedgefield, showing people what our beaches look like, and where they are.“For example, the sign as you come into town from George merely tells everyone that we are a water-stressed area,” he said, “Wouldn’t it be better if it showed one of our glorious beaches, with perhaps a ‘Thank you for saving water’ at the bottom?”Thus he is making a call for local photographers to submit their pictures, so that ten different images can be selected and used for these beautiful signs. “Of course each picture used will display the photographer’s name,” he promised.

Anyone keen on taking part may submit their beach pictures to [email protected].

The EditorGood day or should I say not so good day. This morning about 10.30am we had an unexpected visitor through our garden wall. Corner (Swallow/Hammerkop)A Toyota Hilux. Since we built here two years ago we have constant ly complained about the speed drivers come down Swallow to the vil lage. This person apparently was making a U turn when he lost control. We had a speedy response from ADT and our Neighbours Eddie and Shirley Lloyd. Eddie after the vehicle had been removed by

Fanie, secured our fence for us with the help of his neighbour, until we can get quotes next week to submit to our insurance. Thank goodness we live in Sedgefield. What wonderful people live here. Saying this though we do have a concern as this side walk is used daily by children making there way to school or families on the way to the local clinic. This has become a very dangerous road as the speed bumps (which need a fresh coat of paint to highlight them) do not stop the traffic from speeding down Swallow. This time fortunately nobody was hurt however but next time who knows ?RegardsPiet & Jean Mulder

RATS!Have you ever been taken for a ride by a dirty double-crossing rat? Here’s your chance to take a rat for a ride! You only have to go to your favourite DIY shop to see the array of poisons available. Poisons that have far reaching negative effects on owls and pose a very real danger to your pets. The Sedgefield Island Conservancy have acquired a limited amount of eco-friendly rat traps. No more poison, squashed rats, half dead rats or no rats. This nifty rat trap catches them alive after tasting the piece of avocado, peanut butter or a little titbit soaked in a little sherry (if you can spare it) on the hook inside the trap. The rat traps cost R100 and can be obtained from Ethel Pittaway 083 398 6218.Once trapped, the fun begins. The rat, in his trap, is taken for a ride or a long walk to an uninhabited area where he is released for a lucky owl to catch on her next hunting trip. Here’s looking forward to hearing more of the beautiful sound of owls in Sedgefield.

Our beloved Mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away at the Knysna Mediclinic on Wednesday 18th July 2018.

She was first married to Johannes Kotze, and after his passing in 1982, married Oscar Wocke who passed away in December 2010.

Iris joined the Sedgefield community in 1964, first living in Ruigtevlei and then relocating to the village of Sedgefield in 1982. Both her children (Richard and Stephanie) attended Sedgefield Primary in the 60's and Iris was actively involved in the Ladies Work Party (the then charity organization).

Subsequently Iris was proud to be a founder member of St Francis Church and also an honorary member of the Joy Group. Many congregants will remember her as the organist at the Church as music was one of her passions.

Iris had a love for flowers, and although she spent her last 8 years at Sedgemeer Park, she maintained the garden at her house up until the week of her passing.

Iris was a lady with morals and values who earned the respect of the community and over 44 years contributed generously to the community and other charities.

She was centre of our lives and one of the last of the original inhabitants of Sedgefield.

Details of the Iris Wocke’s Memorial Service shall be advised next week.

We say good bye with love.

SMUTSVILLE FILM AND DRAMA GROUPSedgefield is full of talented people with many skills and great motives. The Smutsville Film and Drama Group was started in November 2017 to encourage people in our community to come together around Film making.

Films are powerful tools in community building and today's technology lends itself quite easily to people being able to produce movies of their own both for fun and for profit. The film industry itself offers a vast r a n g e o f e m p l o y m e n t opportunities both behind and in front of the camera many of which do not require high academic achievements, but rather hard work , dedication and passion.

The small group aims to foster an interest in our local communities for the art and skills required to be a part of this ever growing area of expertise in movie-making.

The Smutsville group have only just started, but these early days are an important part of the learning curve. There are skills that need to be learnt and applied, as with any discipline, the guiding principles need to be in place to make short movies that g r a b p e o p l e ' s a t t e n t i o n . Ensuring a clear and watchable message i s an e s sen t i a l i ng red ien t to success fu l entertainment.

The group is passionate about film and look forward to using the skills that they learn in film-making to do good within the community. They meet every Tuesday even ing a t t he Smutsville Youth Centre (next to the sports grounds) and their present focus is on filming people telling their stories. The next exciting step is to work on producing a local documentary.

This week the Film and Drama Group completed their first basic

five session course, which has been presented by professional locals within the film industry. Clifford Williams and Joshua Mark Wood, who both have had hands on experience with film making, volunteered their services early in this initiative. Josh is currently a freelance film-m a k e r a n d i n s t r u c t o r . Internationally acclaimed, Meg Rickards, Director of award winning 'Tess' has offered to present a course on turning stories into films too, this will be available to anyone who is interested - watch social media and the Edge Newspaper for details.

For more information on joining the Film and Drama group in S m u t s v i l l e c a l l S a m u e l Hartzenburg on 065 244 0029 (Afrikaans) and Di Young 084 514 4939 (English) and for film-making call Josh on 064 936 3772.

Stories build bridges

On Thursday night (19 July), 68 leaders and interested parties from 6 churches and 2 community benefit organisations gathered for a workshop on storytelling. Perhaps story-listening would be a better phrase? The workshop was hosted by Heartlines – an organisation committed to building bridges between South African of all race, culture and gender in an attempt to foster greater understanding ( ).

Leading up to the gathering on Thursday night, field director of Heartlines, Brian Helsby, had met with church leaders to introduce them to the concept and need of better Story Telling (in May), encouraging them to consider running a programme of reconciliation through their church small groups. A decision to engage led to the workshop last week. Small group leaders from the NG Kerk, St. Francis, Sedgefield Christian Church, The Anglican Church (of the Resurrection), Christ Nehemiah Ministries and Efese Gemeente, as well as Masithandane and the newly-formed Smutsville Film Group were enthralled as Ed Ramsami* entertained and challenged them to consider what prejudices divide us and what common grounds we share. Printed material with practical suggestions and DVDs were made available at no charge to those present. A DVD copy of the film Beyond the River was sold for a mere R60.

After the session, the possibility of Heartlines facilitating in our housing/land ownership crisis was discussed as well. “We encourage as many people as possible to engage with the excellent material, or simply to ask and listen to someone across the room, street, or dune”, says Carl Lamprecht. “Sedgefield has an amazing community spirit, and yet we sit with great divides, be they racial, cultural or mental. Should there be sufficient interest from other organisations or interest groups, to engage with Heartlines, I have no doubt that another workshop could be arranged”. Although the emphasis on Thursday was on Church small groups, Heartlines is a non-political and inclusive organisation, working within business, schools, youth development and religious organisations. The values promoted are universal.

*Ed Ramsami is National Director of Youth for Christ SA and on the Heartlines Facilitation team. He was joined by Philip Schroder, Youth for Christ Director in Knysna.

20 VERSUS 21My grand-daughter in New Zealand recently asked me to help her with a school project investigating the difference between life in the 21st century and life in the 20th century. It got me thinking! I was brought up in a London suburb during World War 2 and living in a war was the first topic. I told her about the Spitfires flying over each morning as they came back from fighting over Europe, about food rationing, about never seeing my dad, who was away somewhere on a cargo ship in the Merchant Navy. I told her about his nightmares, when he woke up shouting about being torpedoed by a U boat. He did this until he died. I could also remember the first time in 1952 when I was able to buy a bar of chocolate without a ration book in the school tuck-shop.But it wasn't just the war. I was brought up in a house without a TV se t . When Queen Elizabeth was crowned, we went next door to watch on a

black and white TV with a 12 inch screen. This was the biggest you could buy in those days and colour TV had not been generally introduced in UK.We had power cuts – regularly (watch out Sedgefield!). In very cold winters, houses were kept warm by coal fires which produced “smog” in the city – a fog so thick that the buses had to stop running!I think “communication” is one of the biggest changes I've seen. When I was a teenager, if I wanted to listen to music, it was 78 rpm records on a wind-up

gramophone that played through a horn – HMV style! Nowadays, I have more than 1500 CDs which are all stored on a single USB drive and I buy new CDs the day they are issued by legal downloading. My living room wouldn't be big enough to store all that music on 78rpm discs! And what about cell-phones? When I came out to Africa in 1965, I didn't speak to my mother for ten months because calls had to be booked days in advance and the call quality was appalling. In the cinema, we sometimes had to put up with the show stopping mid-stream because the projector had mashed the film. What made me decide to write about this was my hope that other grandparents would be encouraged to share their own memories. When doing so, I hope you might also make grandchildren think about how much greater the impact of 21st cen tu ry l i f e i s on the environment and how they could lessen that impact, for the sake o f the i r own grandchildren. It's also a constant theme from David Attenborough.

With over 4000 trees planted, and 265 participants and volunteers getting their hands dirty, the Festival of Action wrapped up last weekend, with an explosive celebratory music evening.

The last three weeks have seen Greenpop's Eden Festival of Action spearhead their inaugural festival in the Garden Route: an endeavour which has culminated as a roaring success, with thousands of trees planted by hundreds of active citizens from all over the country - and the world.

Operating from the welcoming home base at Peace of Eden Vegan Lodge in Rheenendal, the festival's sites of action spread throughout the surrounding areas which were impacted by the devastating fires which ravaged the Eden District in June 2017.

The initial two weeks of the programme were geared towards high school students, and saw 85 and 75 students respectively join Greenpop from schools across the country, while the third and final week hosted an All Ages programme. Bitou Municipality and Garden Route Rebuild Init iat ive both sponsored scholarships, allowing 30 local students to attend the festival free of charge.

The primary goal of the festival was to cultivate community connections and initiate mass positive environmental impact in the region through as many aspects as possible - including indigenous reforestation, alien

vegetation clearing, eco-education workshops, and mural painting. Build It K n y s n a g e n e r o u s l y sponsored a substantial number o f too l s and materials for the production set up of the festival.

G r e e n p o p ' s e f f o r t collectively cleared 5500m2 of alien vegetation at Goukamma Nature Reserve over the course of three days.

M a s s i n d i g e n o u s reforestation efforts saw 500 trees planted at Phantom Forest Nature Reserve, 1680 trees at Heartlands School of Self-Sufficiency and 1600 trees at Featherbed Nature Reserve.

Three urban greening sites also saw some hard work put into them, with more established trees planted for windbreaks and buffer zones. With 319 trees planted at Raphaeli Waldorf School in Plettenberg Bay, 25 at Conville Primary School in George, 15 at Eyethu Educare in Knysna, 10 at Whites Location and 11 at Touwsranten Primary School. In addition, 36 trees were planted at Peace of Eden itself.

A total of 4226 indigenous trees of over 20 different species were planted over the course of the festival.

Three environmental murals were painted, headed up by Stellenbosch art lecturer Mieke van der Merwe and assisted by local Knysna artist Artwell Musungate and saw a total of

55m2 of urban space painted. The locations of which are Masizame Child & Youth Centre in Kwanokothula, Knysna town hall, and Touwsranten. This project also involved local child-care ini t iat ives, bringing disadvantaged youth into a space to help beautify and connect with their community through working with Masizame Child & Youth Centre, Mad About Art, and Seven Passes Initiative. Benches, sponsored by Timber Village, were installed at each mural site.

Striving for a minimal waste festival, all waste on site was recycled, composted or eco-bricked, saving over 53 bags of waste from going to landfill. All toilets on site operated on a compost toilet system, and showers on a natural greywater system, also drastically reducing water consumption on site.

I n a d d i t i o n , t h e e n t i r e

REGENERATIVE IMPACT IN THE EDEN DISTRICT

programme was catered for with a delicious plant-based diet, (serving no dairy or meat products) cooked lovingly by the Peace of Eden Lodge kitchen and generously sponsored by Knysna Food Lover's Market in line with their firm sustainability ethos as a store.

Over 370 Eco-bricks were made over the course of the festival - a project which was headed up by Ian Dommisse, who pioneered Eco-bricking in South Africa. This project was an aspect which also involved local child-care initiatives, building benches and educating participants and locals on the importance of eliminating single use plastics.

Three beach clean-ups took place between Sedgefield and Buffalo Bay, in partnership with Beach Co-Op, and Secret Sunrise who facilitated a silent dance party on the final clean-up.

A selection of eco-education w o r k s h o p s w e r e h o s t e d throughout the course of the festival. These included an introduction to Permaculture by Philippa Mallac, an introduction to Biomimicry by Sue Swain, natural building, eco-social e n t e r p r i s e , m i n d f u l n e s s , mycology cultivation, forest ecology, beekeeping at Hope for the Honeybees, a camera trap workshop with Landmark Foundation, and a guitar workshop with local legend Tony Cox.

An ongoing music programme was run throughout the festival, culminating in an original track co-created by all the musicians involved, and recorded at Howard Butcher's Peace of Eden Recording Studio on the main festival site. Paulo Costa spearheaded the programme, and the track included collaborations with Jeremy Loops, The Steezies, and Crosscurrent, as well as a number of musically inclined team members and participants. The final product will be released soon, along with a music video shot on site.

Greenpop also hosted 12 free Open Days which allowed the chance for members of the local public to join the Festival for a variety of active days of reforestation, beach clean-ups, alien vegetation clearing and urban greening. Over 260 locals volunteered their time to help the cause.

Greenpop is incredibly grateful for the local support and very excited to continue the work they have begun in the Eden District.

A total full moon eclipse, which will be visible from m u l t i p l e c o n t i n e n t s including most of Africa, is happening on July 27, according to NASA. The eclipse, which will last for one hour and 43 minutes, will be the longest lunar eclipse of the whole 21st century. Africa will view it sometime between sunset and midnight on July 27.

Two partial solar eclipses – an eclipse never comes aloneLunar eclipses occur when the sun, Earth and moon line, up casting the earth's shadow on the moon. A partial eclipse precedes and follows the lunar eclipse, each time lasting 1 hour and 6 minutes. Two partial solar eclipses will take place on July 12 and August 11. From start to finish, the moon takes nearly four hours to cross the earth's dark umbral shadow. The umbra is the darkest part of Earth's shadow. From within the umbra, all direct sunlight is blocked by Earth as in the case of a total lunar eclipse.

What causes a long-lasting total lunar eclipse? The eclipse, which will last for one hour and 43 minutes, will be the longest lunar eclipse of the whole 21st century. This July full moon and July lunar apogee – the moon's most distant point from Earth in its monthly orbit – both fall on the same date. The July

2018 full moon will therefore be the furthest and smallest full moon of the year.On July 27, 2018 the centre of the lunar disk will swing a tiny bit north of the shadow's centre, making the duration of this eclipse a few minutes shorter than the maximum duration possible, which is one hour and 47 minutes. In spite of this, the upcoming total lunar eclipse counts as a whopper because the most distant and smallest full moon of the year passes through the centre of the earth's shadow, which is at its widest in July.Depending on atmospheric conditions, this could be an especially dark total eclipse.

Best viewingGoing outside at different times throughout the night on July 27 will allow you to catch every stage of the eclipse if the sky is clear. You will then be able to see the eclipse at key moments – when the earth's shadow begins to cover the moon, when the moon turns red, and when the shadow begins to recede, all of which will happen over a period of four hours. You will also be able to see Mars and the Milky Way which will be to the left of the moon. With the light of the moon blocked by earth's shadow, it's the perfect time to view stars and celestial bodies not often visible to the naked eye.

Advertorial

What Is Alzheimer's Disease?Alzheimer's is a disease that robs people of their memory. At first, people have a hard time remembering recent events, though they might easily recall things that happened years ago.

As time goes on, other symptoms can appear, including:• Trouble focusing• A hard time doing ordinary activities• F e e l i n g c o n f u s e d o r frustrated, especially at night• Dramatic mood swings -- outbursts of anger, anxiety, and depression• Feeling disoriented and getting lost easily• Physical problems, such as an odd walk or poor coordination• Trouble communicating

People with Alzheimer's might forget their loved ones. They might forget how to dress themselves, feed themselves, and use the toilet.

The disease makes brain tissue break down over time. It usually happens to people over age 65.

A person can l ive wi th Alzheimer's disease for just a few years or for a few decades. More often, however, people live with it for about 9 years. About 1 in 8 people age 65 and over has the disease. Women are more likely to have it than men.

What Causes Alzheimer's Disease?People who get Alzheimer's disease are usually older, but the disease isn’t a normal part of aging. Scientists aren’t sure why some people get it and others don’t. But they do know that the symptoms it causes seem to come from two main types of nerve damage:• Nerve cells get tangles, called neurofibrillary tangles.• Protein deposits called beta-amyloid plaques build up in the brain.

Alzheimers-Brain-Cells Researchers aren’t sure what causes this damage or how it happens, but it could be a protein in blood called ApoE (for apolipoprotein E), which the body uses to move cholesterol in the blood.

There are a few types of ApoE that may be linked to a higher risk of Alzheimer's. It could be that certain forms of it cause brain damage. Some scientists think it plays a role in building the plaques in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s.

Whether or not ApoE partly causes Alzheimer's, genes

almost certainly play a role in the disease. Someone with a parent who had the disease is more likely to have it, too.

There is some evidence that people with high blood pressure and high cholesterol have a greater chance of getting Alzheimer's. More rarely, head injuries may be a reason, too - the more severe they are, the greater the risk of Alzheimer's later in life.

Scientists are still studying many of these theories, but it’s clear that the biggest risks linked to Alzheimer's disease are being older and having Alzheimer's in your family.

Types of Alzheimer's DiseaseN e a r l y e v e r y o n e w i t h Alzheimer ’s disease will eventually have the same symptoms - memory loss, confusion, trouble with once-familiar tasks, and making decisions. Though the effects of the disease are similar, there are two main types.• Early-onset Alzheimer's. This type happens to people who are younger than age 65. Often, they’re in their 40s or 50s when they’re diagnosed with the disease. It’s rare - up to 5% of all people with Alzheimer's have early-onset. People with Down syndrome have a higher risk for it.

Scientists have found a few ways i n w h i c h e a r l y - o n s e t Alzheimer’s is different from other types of the disease. People who have it tend to have more of the brain changes that are linked with Alzheimer’s. The early-onset form also appears to be linked with a defect in a specific part of a person’s DNA: chromosome 14. A form of muscle twitching and spasm, called myoclonus, is also more c o m m o n i n e a r l y - o n s e t Alzheimer's.

• Late-onset Alzheimer's. This is the most common form of the disease, which happens to people age 65 and older. It may or may not run in families. So far, researchers haven’t found a particular gene that causes it. No one knows for sure why some people get it and others don’t.

Familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) is a form of Alzheimer's disease that doctors know for certain is linked to genes. In families that are affected, members of at least two generations have had the disease. FAD makes up less than 1% of all cases of Alzheimer's. Most people who have early onset Alzheimer's have FAD.

How Will I Get Diagnosed? There's isn't a single test that confirms you have Alzheimer's. But there are several ways your doctor checks to see if you have it.

First, he'll ask you about your medical history, including any symptoms that are bothering you now. You'll also take tests that check your memory and see how well you solve problems.

You may also get imaging tests that look for changes in your brain and can help rule out other causes of your symptoms. They may include a CT scan, which is a powerful X-ray that makes detailed pictures inside your body. Or you might get an MRI, which uses magnets and radio waves to create images.

How Do I Treat Alzheimer's?An important part of managing your condition is to stay as positive as you can. Keep up with the activities you still enjoy. Try different ways to relax, like yoga or deep-breathing.

Keep your body in good shape, too. Make sure you eat healthy food and get regular exercise.

There are medications that can help with some symptoms of Alzheimer's.

How Should I Get Ready for the Future? There are plans you can start making now that will be a big help later. For example, meet with a lawyer to learn about the arrangements you'll need. Giving someone "power of attorney," lets the people you love make health and money decisions for you when you can no longer do that on your own.

It's also a good idea to think about how you'll pay for some of your future health costs. Some things to consider are safety equipment you'll need at home or getting help from a professional caregiver. Get your family together to talk about your finances, and how much money you're likely to need to get proper care.

Now is also the time to start building your team. Lots of different people will be on it. Yo u r r e l a t i v e s , f r i e n d s , n e i g h b o u r s , a n d h e a l t h professionals all have a role. Your family and your doctor can help you put a group together.

The important thing is to figure out what you want, make a specific, realistic plan, and to let people around you know.

FOLLOW UP?

What has your local Lions Club been busy with?

The teachers at Busy-Bugz held their term team building event before going on a well-deserved break for the June school holidays.

This term’s team building event was an “Amazing race”. The teachers had loads of fun on the day by finding clues to each of their stations, where they had a task to complete, before receiving the clue that guided them to their next station. From making their own salads to finding books in the library, doing fitness workouts, singing children songs, and the ultimate had to be the balancing act - they had to perform on the unicycle at Cycleworx.

These term team building events, create a setting where

teachers get to know each other better, improving motivation, productivity and encouraging creativity.

Taking employees out of the workspace helps break down personal barriers, eliminates distractions and most important of all everyone gets to have fun.

Busy-Bugz would like to thank the following businesses who contributed either their time or prizes for the day: Our local library, Twizza, Misfit Training, Avon, Guest Soapies, Remax, Cycleworx, Baywater and Silver Scissors, Matty Smith & Juliana Glad.

TEAM BUILDING AT BUSY-BUGZP a m G o l d i n g P r o p e r t i e s Sedgefield honoured Nelson Mandela on 18th July by visiting HUG House. Thanks to Sister Brigid and the caregivers for all t h e i r l o v e a n d dedication to the patients.

T h e P G P T e a m handed out cup cakes, blankets and beanies. P G P t h a n k s t h e community for their continuous support for “Joy of Giving”. Without the blankets and squares we would not be able to make up the winter warmers which we donate to various charities.

HUG (House Under Grace) Respite & Care Centre opened its doors to the community of Sedgefield in May 2017 after identifying the need for a care centre to assist those suffering from severe chronic diseases.

Masithandane Care and Resp i te Centre (HUG House)

Offers cost-effective, §

compass ionate care by competent care workers. Types of patients for short and long-term admissions and care to 'Hug House' include the following:§ Patients with a chronic condition who experience an acutely ill phase of the condition.§ Patients whose family members need a short period of respite.§ P a t i e n t s w h o a r e terminally ill.

.§ Patients who need a limited period of rehabilitative post-operative care.

Friday 13th July 201818 ladies arrived on an overcast crisp 10 degrees winters day, all ready for 3 clubs and a putter format. This time with a difference, everyone would play as a team, members of the team could use any of the team members chosen clubs. An added fun aspect would be a

special prize for anyone putting 13 putts on either nine as it was Friday the 13th. Lucky for some! Everyone had a chance to pay R2 to estimate their gross score. 7 birdies were shot by 6 ladies. Nearest the pin went to Barbara Renfield who also estimated her score accurately winning the cash. Wendy Mack was the only one to have 13 putts on the front nine. CHRISTINE won the new ladies section and the team that

won on 86 points was Linda Evans, Daleen Schooling, Delahvonne Veldtmann and Marina van der Westhuizen. A special thank you to Joy Herbst for organizing novel prizes of special golf mugs and delicious homemade soup for the winning team. We really appreciate your thoughtfulness Joy. Well done ladies and thank you for your wonderful spirit of fun.FRIDAY 20th July 2018

6 secret holes would be the format for the day and how lovely to welcome 21 ladies to the game. Teams were chosen and everyone was off on an unusually warm day for the middle of winter. The ladies used stableford scoring and on arrival at the club, 6 holes were drawn to see which scores would count. Marina van der Westhuizen won the 6 hole score with 12 points, second was Moraig McLeod on 11 and Elize Mackenzie-Blom followed closely with 10 points. The Individual Stableford points for the day was won by Almarie Mead on 39 points. The nearest the pin prize of 6 freshly laid eggs went to Moraig. Barbara (Pottie) won the new ladies section and 8 birdies were shot by 7 ladies. Almarie shot an eagle on the 9th .. well done everyone. Mike Newbery was thanked for coming in specially to show the new ladies some of the ropes on the course. The prize money for the World Cup lucky draw went to Wendy Mack for drawing France, who won and 2nd went to Helen Pahl for drawing Croatia. Everyone was reminded that all first round games for the first round of the Knockout needed to be played by the first week of August please. Meg Isherwood was thanked for donating a load of practice balls to the club and

12/07/18It was a dark and somber winter’s morn that greeted the militants in the opposing sides as they lined up for the annual Ryder Cup competition. Boer v s B r i t . T h e s e n s e o f foreboding was soon justified when the Boers eventually thumped the Brits by nine pairings to a measly five. The Brits were playing so badly that if they were growing tomatoes they would have come up sliced. Things then got worse as England were later that day knocked out of the World Cup, a South African competed in the final of their hallowed Wimbledon turf and another Saffa won the Scottish Open. Truly a memorable four days. For some.

19/07/18Greensomes was the format of the day. The choice of this

nomenclature is unknown as it involves pairs playing the better of the two drives then alternate shots. However, one must mention the quality of the greens which are immaculate thanks to Bertus. Neatness of the card is not taken into recognition. Nevertheless the twenty-eight golfers al l enjoyed the competition with Malcolm Goldhill and Andre de Wet running out winners after a countout with a net 51. This was quite surprising as the latter has a swing like a toilet door on a prawn trailer. They were followed by George Heath and Brian Anderson. In third place were Derek van Zyl and Hamish Ledingham with 52. Hamish says he’s always wanted to live in the fast lane and now he is. All he can afford at the supermarket nowadays is 8 items or less.

semifinals will be played on Tuesday 24 July - finals will be played on Tuesday 31 July at 13h30. Some good bowls should be on view so come down and watch from the banks. The Ladies Mini League has now reached the half way stage and Sedgefield hosted this weeks competition. A great mornings bowls in beautiful weather was had by all and thanks must go to Joey and her helpers for a wonderful tea. One of our big competitions of the year- the Pick and Pay Ladies Day – will be held on 16 August – please see the notice board for the entry list and put your team down if you wish to play.

Sick List Phillip Hendrickse is still not well and undergoing tests for his pain in his hips. They seem to have sorted out his heart problems but whilst his hips are so painful he is unable to play either bowls or golf. We look forward to seeing you back on the greens soon Phillip.Barrie Hardie is in ICU in Knysna Private Hospital after undergoing an operation last Wednesday. We are still awaiting news of the results of this op.And finally….with thanks to Terry Hepworth from Constantia Bowls Club….are bowls male or

female? For example – car tyres are male, because they go bald easily and are easily inflated. Photocopiers are definitely female because once they are turned off, they can take a while to warm up again. So what gender are bowls? If a bowl can be’ beautiful’ it must be female because no one refers to a beautiful man, do they. Bowls also tend to do their own thing, go their own way, are normally a bit biased, a little sensitive and have dimples. Before anyone goes to Constantia to attack Terry this was taken from Neville Odell’s book “a tad more grass”.
