Our safety statistics remain a big concern for me. You are the company’s most important asset, which is why Nestlé has put in place many non-negotiable rules and guidelines to ensure your safety. Do you practise safe behaviour at all times? Do not hesitate to report unsafe conduct – it could mean the difference between life and death for yourself and others! remember that arriving home to your family and loved ones as safely as you left them, is as much your responsibility as it is Nestlé’s.

Do you have any ideas on how we can be more safety-conscious? email me your suggestions at [email protected] and I will share them with the rest of the market.

Our mission of Nourishing southern africa is realised through various initiatives. through the quality of our products, our CsV initiatives and the information we share both

internally and externally, we strive to improve the quality of life of our employees and consumers while empowering them to make healthier and tastier food choices. the Nutrition awards held in October, amplify our commitment to enhancing the quality of life of all south africans. this iconic event recognises and rewards the efforts made by women to improve the nutritional status of their communities through food gardens.

thank you for your hard work over the past few months. I rely on you to continue with your efforts to work efficiently while continuously looking for ways to reduce waste.

Letter of the month

If you can dream it… Dear Care & Share

I started working at Nestlé as just a Packer but I never stopped dreaming big, regardless of bad circumstances. My faith kept me strong when the “wind of influence” tried to blow me away.

I am always eager to learn and I think people relate better to me when they realise this. I focus on surrounding myself with disciplined and positive people as it helps me to be disciplined and positive and to make good decisions. It is my intention to keep learning more, to aim higher every day and to give my best in everything I do. this helped me advance my career from being a Packer to becoming an Internal auditor – the position I fill today.

Being an Internal auditor is quite challenging. to effectively handle this position’s responsibilities, I need to apply good time management, be objective and prepare for unexpected problems or issues. I have to be mature, engaging and,

most of all, maintain confidentiality at all times. I feel very lucky to be part of a team that motivates and inspires me to always do my best and to work for a company that values the wellbeing of its employees.

Nestlé gives you the opportunity to grow and develop your skills, thereby preparing you not only for future opportunities but also for the day-to-day demands of your job. a job is a self portrait – colour yours with excellence. take advantage of opportunities, surround yourself with people who uplift you and empower yourself in every way possible. If you are willing to learn, you will never stop growing and realise: no dream is ever too big.

“For the first time in my life I had an idea

of what it was like to walk in the shoes

of an abused woman. The looks I got, the

whispering as I passed crowds... It felt like I did something wrong! It

broke my heart, as I know women who go through this. They tell

stories of having broken ribs and a bruised face but being strong for their kids – putting on a fake smile along with their makeup to cover

up the reality.”Lush Pillay, a participant

the 16 Days of activism campaign is an international movement that takes place every year from 25 November to 10 December. although the global campaign focuses on violence against women only, south africa includes children in the cause, because of the country’s high incidence of child abuse. Implemented in 1999, the campaign aims to increase awareness about the impact of violence against women and children and to encourage collective action against all kinds of mistreatment. By participating, south africans build support for victims and survivors of abuse and help to empower women and protect human rights.

as a responsible corporate citizen, Nestlé Zar supports the 16 Days of activism movement – another way in which the company strives to make a difference in the communities in which it operates. Nestlé recognises that working with government in this regard provides various opportunities for creating awareness around and preventing the abuse of women and children.

to aid in the 2012 campaign, Nestlé plans to raise and donate funds to victim empowerment centres and write messages of hope to abused women and children. since the campaign’s 16 days also spans over World aIDs Day, activities will include painting the aIDs ribbon on head office’s grounds and lighting candles in remembrance of aIDs victims.

last year, volunteers from Nestlé’s head office posed as abused women by wearing make up that mimicked the marks and bruises of physical abuse. Underlining the theme “don’t look away, do something!”, the activity’s main objective was to educate employees on abuse and to encourage them not to ignore its signs but to become actively involved in the fight against physical mistreatment. the ladies’ “battered” faces created a stir among employees and emotions ran high as topics surrounding this kind of injustice were discussed. Nearly 70% of Nestlé Zar’s employees also signed a pledge vowing to always act against abuse. the pledge has travelled around the country to all the company’s sites.

Nestlé fights back

against abuseIn 2011, the rate of adult women murdered in South Africa increased by 5,6%, and the rate of sexual offences against children under 18 years increased by 2,6%. Care & Share takes a look at Nestlé’s involvement in the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, and what you can do to support the cause.

“My experience was

heartbreaking. It felt like I

was at fault everytime someone saw my face. I think that our

society is still very ignorant and judgemental towards women and that many people are still living in the Stone Age where it’s ‘the man’s

way or the highway’. We need to educate our society to have a balance between soft skills and

hard skills. We need to better relate to others to understand what they

are going through.”Naledi Tau, a participant

Nestlé’s Potchefstroom site recently started four construction projects, including a new ring road, warehouse, filling and packing facility, and glucose and oil offloading facility.

Ring roadBuilt to alleviate the high traffic loads expected from the increased production of CreMOra in the years to come, the road also reaches to the loading area under the canopy of the new warehouse. the next phase of the ring road is planned to stretch around the back of the coal yard and lead to the western gate.

Warehouse at 49m x 48m, the new warehouse offers a surface area of 2 352m², providing for a stacking height of up to seven layers. It also joins with the factory’s existing warehouse of which a portion will be used for the CreMOra packing flow lines.

Filling and packing building the building has three levels and is 19m high. the top floor will contain hoppers that are fed from the spray-drying tower by using a vacuum transport system. the hoppers will feed the three filling machines which each fill 75 sachets per minute, thereby consuming 6,7 tonnes of CreMOra per hour! the boxing and cartoning sections of the packing lines will extend into the western portion of the old warehouse, which will be converted into a production facility.

Expanding for an even creamier tomorrowBrian Grierson, Potchefstroom

Glucose and oil offloading facilitythis smaller project takes the offloading activity and inherent hazards away from the electrical and mechanical workshops. Offloading activity will now take place at this new structure next to the eastern wall, near the bean offloading building. together, the two new tanks will be able to contain 234 000 litres of glucose.

Clockwise from the top left are the glucose tanks, warehouse, glucose and oil offloading facility, filling and packing building, and ring road construction projects at Potchefstroom.

Mossel Bay talks about safetyNomandla Ntlale, Mossel Bay

at Nestlé Mossel Bay, employees are issued with lOtO devices to apply to different energy sources, while contractors verify lock Out by adding their own lock Out and tag Out devices. Following our strict work permit is yet another way of complying with the lOtO safety guideline. We want everyone who visits or works on the site to go home as

safely as he or she arrived, which makes safety a top priority at Mossel Bay. While we are pleased with the current levels of safety awareness, there is still a lot of work to be done before we are fully compliant.

Always use Lock Out and

Tag Out to ensure isolation of energy

Before working on machinery and plant equipment, ensure effective Lock Out and Tag Out (LOTO) of all energies(eg, electricity, compressed air, steam, product, hot water, gas, etc.)
